  • We review the BMW R nineT Pure motorbike from BMW Motorrad.
    This 1170cc opposed-twin boxer engined motorcycle is powerful, yet manageable. It handles well and sounds really cool!
    We look at how it rides, the brakes, handling, suspension, wheels, twin cylinder boxer engine, gears and styling. How many mpg? We find out the fuel economy too. What does it sound like? How about one with aftermarket pies! Who is it for? Would you buy it? Your questions will be answered by watching this video.
    Thanks again to Wollaston Motorrad BMW in Northampton UK. www.wbikes.com for lending us this bike. Check out their website for all the deals!

    Excellent video. I sorely wish I lived in such a beautiful place. I have long been a fan of the r9t and the 2021 models look nicer than ever. I recently bought a Ducati Scambler and commute for 40 minutes through central Paris and outskirts and the Ducati seems as good as it can get for the purposes but...I am tempted to switch to the r9t in a year or so just because it is so beautiful, well made and reliable. Have you tried it in dense city traffic? I spend half the time filtering and I'm concerned that the extra weight and width would be a handicap.I think i would go for the Pure with some upgrades rather than the classic because as you say, in the real world, we don't need those gold forks.

    I know it has to do with BMW’s history that’s influencing my thoughts here, but the boxer engine, especially in this application reminds me of an old prop plane, the sound as the bike rides past has a similar buzzing sound about it. I don’t know, anyone else think that? It’s strange, I oddly like that unique signature here in the RnineT, but in the GS or RS, I’m honestly turned off by the sound it makes, it’s just not attractive to me in those bikes. Must be the retro old style of the RnineT that makes sense for me.

    • @MrDarcy-OlMan
      @MrDarcy-OlMan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is definitely easier to ride than the Speed Twin. The Speed Twin feels more racy, the RnineT is more of an easy going bike, but it will still go really fast if you open it up

    • @roverroko306

      9T is faster and more powerful than speed twin.

    • @barcibus
      @barcibus 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the RnineT will feel more comfortable for taller people, and the Speed Twin more comfortable for shorter people (e.g. ~5'7"). The RnineT will feel more stable and safer, although you will have to work more to take corners faster. The Speed Twin will make the same corners feel easy, but you can get into trouble more easily as well.

    • @roverroko306
      @roverroko306 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Speed twin is cool I do like it. But it's just not comparable with R9T. This BMW is a very unique bike people. There's nothing else like it out there . Triumph Bonnaville range is just so vast, plus there's other twin cylinder, neo/retro bike's out there these days. But there's nothing quite like R9T and to me that's very special. But ok I am also a boxer motor + cardan shaft aficionado. R9T is faster, more power, speed twin a small bit more nimble and flickable just a bit. But BMW is more stable, it's like a bullet train on track's. For me pick between the two is a no brainer. But that's just me. Cheers Riders 🙂😇😉

However, many of us stare at tablets too much already and the last place I want to look at a rectangular screen is on a bike. At a minimum, wouldn’t making the TFT’s shape more akin to traditional displays (many cars already have that nailed) and then building in a simple feature to send data to your phone or another accessible place on the bike be more attractive? These bikes look so much better in person! I just came from a local dealer here in Erfurt Germany and they had two of the most beautiful bikes I have ever seen. Both R nineTs! They must have had custom paint jobs as the first was a dark rustic candy Apple Red and the other was probably my most favorite green. A dark sort or metallic british racing green. They were side by side and complimented each other very well. BUT 18000 euros! Fuuuuqqkkk! That said I was surprised at how well i fit on the bike at almot 5'11" with a 30 inch inseam. It did like you say definitely felt like a big boys bike but I wasn't intimidated by it. That said I don't know if it would really be a wise choice for a first bike at 40. However, If I had enough to waste I'd probably get a smaller bike and the R nineT I spoke of waiting for me in the wings. By the way the fit and finish on these bikes are outstanding. Thanks for the video!

    Not sure where you get the minimum heights you state of 5’ 7” or 5’ 8” maybe you don’t consider a bikes suitability for short arses because you’re not one?
    I’m 5’ 4” and fit on this bike well and that’s without be able to add any where near the ‘compression’ you can when sitting on it 😂
    Ive had a 9T for over 2 years now, never once found it twitchy or unstable, very much the opposite it’s extremely well planted, corners well and is easy to ride. On the fuel front- over 200 miles on one tank? Nowhere near it for me, more like 160 max and often the reserve light comes on at 130 miles but then it does depend how and where you ride.
    I agree if you’re sensible(ish) you could have this as a first bike, it doesn’t spur you on to lunacy or run away with you like some but it’s just with you so if you want to give it some beans the funs right there when you want it. Equally it’s not suffering if you want to potter and admire the view. I think the seats a tad hard for longer trips and the optional extras are very over priced but it’s BMW so whaddya expect? Would I buy it again, yes without a second thought. The quality of the finish and the thump of the boxer engine is worth every penny.

      Not having a go, just happen to be one of 3 peeps I know on 9T’s who are 5’ 5” or under that this bike suits, I kinda think it’s one of the qualities thats useful for the shorties to know.

      @@obiwan9993 Motorcycle manufacturers build bikes for the average height and weight person, which happens to be 5’10”. Some bikes are a little larger and some are smaller. It’s a one size fits all approach thus the further away one gets from the ideal height (in terms of the design of the bike), the worse it is. Curious to see you ride a Triumph Street Triple on which you can adjust the sag both in the front and rear. It should compress 25% when you sit, 20% for firmer ride 30% for softer, 25% seems to be an ideal most people like. Obviously, a big heavy guy like you can't ride the same setting a 120 lbs. small girl, it's just like mountain biking. In terms of damping (how fast it comes back up from a bump) or compression (how fast it compresses down to absorb the bump) they are not as crucial you can have those adjusted as well if you have someone that can give you 5 minutes to show you how. But at least we will know how drastic your SAG ride was. Hope you can get one. That should always be the first question you ask the dealer people: Can I adjust the sag on this bike? (damping and compression are extra luxuries) but sag is big. With improper sag, the bike will feel like a bucking horse, pogo stick and can actually be dangerous. With the proper sag it moves with you, soaking up bumps effortlessly.

    All pure variants have the single speedometer
    OEM parts and repairs are premium priced

    Its one of the real world best engies ever put into a motorcycle imho. Flexible, powerful and characterful. The gs and gsa are better for bigger blokes. The r9t has a few downsides including limited ground clearance in the corners. It remains stable as any sports bike in tbe corners but you can be caught out by ground clearance issues if pushed really hard. There is no weather protection but you can get a screen for these. Build quality is very good.
    I still prefer my own 2016 1200gsa (126bhp, 92 lbs ft torque and 135mph). Its more comfortable, practical and can still hustle in the corners. Best bike I've ever owned in nearly 40 years of biking.
    I get 50mpg easily on a run from my 30 litre tank which is a whopping 300 miles before reserve kicks in.
    Nice video once again. Keep 'em coming! Try the new 1250 gs. It'll really be an eye opener! Forget the stying...it's a real roadster to ride and with more power and torque. I like the fact you dont play top trumps but do talk about what these bikes are actually like to ride.
    I have had several Harleys and these boxers are in a diglffetent league. They're better in every respect. I woulkd never own another Harley. Too many quality control issues, poor handling and grossly over priced.

      I rode the Speed Twin and R NineT back to back. Speed a bit more nimble (as the weight would suggest) but not by much. Brakes better on the BM. Flatter power delivery on Speed, more characterful from the BM - about similar for pace though. Speed riding position is canted forwards more than BM - not by much, but the tank is narrow and hard to grip with knees; might be able to solve that with tank pads to bring it out an inch or so. BM position is really neutral, but I'd say the seat is a bit uncomfortable (I have done 260 miles on it mind, so it's not so bad). BM suspension a bit stiff on the rear - many owners swap out to a Wilbers shock. Both look great in the metal. Both sound nice. I chose the BM but that's because I got a good deal on a low mileage 2018 bike and the Speeds haven't dropped into that sort of range yet. I'd happily have the Speed but I'm also very happy with my R NineT.

      I rode this bike. I am 6`1 like you and the bike is OK for this height, but be aware that that there is quite a big leaning angle forward and therefore putting a lot of weight on your wrists. I think for someone who is 6`1 the leaning anle is 22 degree. Otherwise a very good bike. You just have to get familiar with the shaft drive, like it was said in the review.

    You are a bit big on the 9T, but it can still take your size and weight. I own the original Roadster R9T and 18l gets me about 320km on a full tank so it’s quite good. I am 179 an a half cm tall and it’s perfect for my size.

    I find looks important on these bikes. You are a big fellow, the R18 would look better on you. Unfortunately, it seems like the current retrobike trend lilke the NineT, Triumps and Ducati results in small bikes.
