- BMW R nine T 2023 ; BMW made its intentions clear when bringing the R nine T motorcycle, with its iconic boxer engine and its classic roadster looks, to the world of street cred conscious customers.
They sat their bike atop the modern retro segment of the market which is a perfect place to be because who can resist this cool style when paired with modern dynamics and state of the art components.
Yet with an engine having its roots in the mid 20th century can this German thoroughbred deliver emotional pleasure together with all of the necessary 21st Century dynamics and performance?
Well why don't you join me Roger Bailey on a journey of discovery across some of the very best roads the UK has to offer.

I watched this and then went straight out for a 30 minute ride on my two week old R nineT. What a bike, I'm in love, and very lucky. Great video, Roger, your enthusiasm is infectious.
thanks Greg, glad to hear I got you onto your bike !
Probably one of the best motorcycles in the world...beautiful, elegant, attractive and full of character.... I love it!
I love my R9T Scrambler. 🏍️💨💨🏁
I’m 63 and came off a GSA for an R Nine T Scrambler because I wanted to be more flat footed. Technology wise the GSA wins but the 9T is the most fun I’ve had on a bike in a long time.
I had a hip replacement a few years ago and want to switch my Transalp for an R Nine T Scrambler however I am not sure about the seat / ride position comfort. Any advice or comments from long rides?
That’s hilarious- I’m nearly following the same pattern- except my knees ain’t the best - hence my exit from GSA ownership- no off road for me anymore. If finance gets approved, I’ll pick up my ex demo (750km) this week!
It’s really agile - and bloody responsive 😍
That’s what I did too. I had (2) 1200 GS’s and a R 1100 GS. I’m 71 years old with severe arthritis and bad legs. So this bike is easier to ride. It’s lower, and handles the twisties in the Ozarks of Arkansas like a sport bike. But I do give up going to places that require some kinda enduro riding. “All my rowdy friends,” have given up off-road riding due to old age and injuries. So I don’t need to be way back in the boonies by myself anyway. I love my R 9T Scrambler! 🏍️💨🏁
One of the biggest reasons I love BMW and Moto Guzzi…the shaft drive. Once I experienced the shaft, I find it difficult to ever go back to anything else. It’s not that I’m against cleaning, adjusting, etc the chain…I just prefer spending my time getting on the bike and riding it. When I want to hit a long distance ride, no problem at all. Also, the lack of fuel gauge is really no issue to me. I grew up riding dirt bikes, you just use the odometer to estimate your range. No big deal. Fantastic video and I love the helmet!
I'm a RniteT owner and I think you did a fantastic job reviewing the bike.
Thanks Luis
ditto!
so much better seeing the bike in all its glory than most other reviews where its filmed just using a gopro on a helmet, excellent review thanks
thanks Gary
One of the reviews that tipped me toward purchasing one. Always a pleasure to ride the R Nine T, and your review is spot on!
Great to hear!
When I took one for ride along with many others....I confess I didnt want to like it...i thought it was all about style....but one ride and I was smitten...and since purchase the ownership thrill of such a bike just grows and grows,,,and now she growls and growls too.....with a ti akro system....a genuinely terrific motorcycle
No fuel gauge is just silly in this day and age, and to change the battery you have to remove the tank! Other than that, I love my R9T!
Brilliantly put together what a bike I love mine absolutely love it
A fan of “The art of motorcycle maintenance” I see! Couldn’t agree more with the way you described this bike, it pumps out its chest and has charm in spades! It’s fun to ride with or without pace.
totally blown away by this video, what a mega review the filming is totally professional, words are brilliant, really interesting, the editing top drawer fantastic, please make more bike reviews ! !
thanks Pedro - more bike reviews? - possibly !
Yes, i've been riding one for 8 years, and all your plaudits are true!
Great film and outstanding review. I have the exact same bike with same wheels. I put on a tail tidy and upgraded the rear suspension, and it is now utter perfection. I’ve had many bikes including modern GSs but this one has gotten under the skin and is definitely a keeper. Brilliant on the back roads obviously and pootling around town, but I also find it’s perfectly happy and planted on a motorway despite the windblast. Lack of fuel gauge is a quirk but count up the miles between refilling and you easily get into a groove and don’t miss it. Cheers
Thanks Marcus for sharing this, yes I’m counting miles too ! cheers - Roger
Inhave the exact same bike with same spoke wheels. I bought it 4 weeks ago and have been light touring in Australia with it. 3000km so far. Best bike I’ve had. Goes fast, plush suspension on bad roads, cant complain. I am interested to know what you replaced the stock rear suspension with.
@@Stevevm21 the rear suspension is Wilbers, ordered from Germany and set to my weight. Well worth the upgrade. 3000km across Australia sounds magical cheers
Thanks for the vlog! Nicely done fitting what this bike is intended for. Not all riders are up for a track bike and having invested in R9T, I think you have managed to portray the way people should look at this machine..
You’re welcome saurabh and thanks
Greetings Roger! Thanks for the excellent video. FWIW, I've owned many BMWs over the years (R80/7, R65/7, R1200C Montauk, K1200LT, R1200RT, R1150R, K1300S, R1200GSA - My local dealer cried when I walked away from motorcycles in 2014 - but I digress...) and the one I think I miss most is the R80/7. It was a European spec unit with low bars and side cases (don't recall the correct names, so I won't try to guess) and it was my 1st Boxer Twin. Used to ride in Japan with a guy who rode an iron-head sportster. We'd stop at restaurants and watch folks do double-takes as they walked past our motorcycles. The R nine T reminds me of those days and those rides. Thanks for the reminder and have a great ride today, wherever you are. Cheers!
Thanks for sharing this, you’ve had some brilliant bikes, best wishes - Roger (Wirral England)
Such a good bike. Sounds so good. Wish I was young again to get one. Thanks so much for sharing!!! This year I am 71, still got a DR650. Thanks!!
Great video Roger, you’ve done the bike proud. The best review I’ve seen.
thanks David ! catch up soon 👍🏼
Great review. Wonderfully shot. I agree…I love the R9T. It would be good to see a comparison with say the Triumph Bonneville or Thruxton to see what you think.
I suscribed because you know how to share your passion ; thank you. Safe ride. Thierry rider from French Alps.
Everyone keeps telling me that I will kill myself getting a S1000RR as a first bike. People do not understand I am literally not afraid of the bike, I used to jump out of planes for a living in the army. I need to feel what it is like to control a bike so powerful its like I am flying. So I am getting a R 9T as a first bike instead of a S1000RR lol
Still have nine. Love it. Bulletproof
That was a real surprise … but perhaps not upon reflection. Something that I soon learnt after joining my local Porsche Owners’ Club was how many members were fellow motorcyclists, many of whom had Ducatis like me, and a good proportion of which were either the more retro newer models or older models themselves. It’s interesting to note the complete contrast between car and motorcycle transmissions: while the vast majority of performance cars now have PDK or similar, if you rode an automatic performance bike you’d be laughed out of the room. Another wonderful video Roger.
yes plenty of Porsche driver are into bikes it seems, especially German boxer engined bikes, thanks for looking in again Stephen 👍🏼
I have to admit that I love my porsche and my R9t but wasn't aware that a lot of people feel the same.
I am couch and TH-cam certified, I owned the bmw, the Honda cb 1000 and xsr900. The xsr has an awesome motor cheap chassis , the Honda was good, just good but I miss the bmw every day and will buy another one someday.
Love the R9t for the same reason as I love the V7 guzzi it's proper old school in my day. lol, cc ruled now it's all about bhp in my day it was about fun and enjoying the moment. Great video by the way
cheers Phil
such a cherming and friendly man
Great production and insights on this fine machine. Your last line about the price of quality is classic.
Thanks Dean - appreciated
Great video. This bike is a quirky work of art. One of my favourites.
I love this motorcycle.
I really like your visor glasses. Would you please tell me the manufacturer of the glasses.
Thank you very much!
I got it from DAVIDA Helmets
I have a 2021 R9T-719 Option...The Frost Black/Silver,/Aluminum with the Red frame...it looks absolutely stunning, and it draws a crowd where ever it's Parked. It one of the few Bikes I'm keeping
Great review. The Rnine T is simply a pleasure to ride. Pure joy.
I absolutely love my RNineT.
now I've got an urge to go to that chester BMW and try out a rninet . great review, filming is next level
do it, makes sense !
yup its amazing bike. i have the 2016 version EUR 3. with spark exhaust, and Ac schnitzer wheels. and mono seat. right now it weighs 190 kg, so its pretty amazing to drive now
Great review Roger, glad we were able to assist you in the purchase of your RnineT.
Thanks Louis it’s been a very agreeable purchase, Roger btw not Nigel 😆
@@RogerBaileyOnCars sorry!!! I've corrected it now. Feel free to call in for a coffee if you're passing. Would be great to catch up.
Great video! I especially love the commentary. You Britts certainly have a way of wording things. Love the camera angles too.
I haven't decided on what bike I'm getting. The BMW R Nine T has been in my top 3 for a while. We'll see in 2024!
hope 2024 brings you the right bike! pleased to hear you liked the vid
Have had the r9t on my shopping list for the last decade lol. I'm 6'3 and I'm afraid it's a little too small for me.
I really like the look of the R9T. I’ve never ridden an opposed twin before. I do have a V-twin, an inline 4 and a large displacement single right now though and imagine it being closer to the V-twins low and midrange pull than the screaming top end of the inline 4. I doubt it is anything like the single but I could be totally wrong. I could see a R9T in the garage if I had any room left. I think of all the retro bikes that manufacturers have been releasing lately BMW’s design really hits the mark
Well said Roger. Didn't realise you are a fellow Porsche GT3 owner and bike rider. thumbs up.
Rode 40years on sports bikes then broke my neck a few years ago (fell of a horse, not bike) and couldn't ride anymore. Then discovered a the R1200GS, upright position with the bullet proof boxer engine = BMW brilliant bikes.
We share the same taste in machines :-)
Just watched your superb video again ,I’m a r ninet nut ! I’ve just ordered my R12 r ninet it would be great if you could do a new video on the new model.
Just saw this today up close it looks beautiful
Great video so well presented and filmed love it , love the bike too I ride a TFC special street twin 1200, plus a couple of Ducati’s the Triumph is similar and looks as good and of course a Porsche Boxster S and with that you get the county side inside the car as well question is I’m new to your channel what road route did you film on ? It looks so good very interested in knowing keep up the good work, Ash
Nice to meet you today Roger. Unfortunately after returning home i discovered a sound issue on my video. Gutted.. definitely a lesson learned, “check equipment before filming” aaahhh.
bugger - oh well, next time 😊
Would like to see a CB1100 review (EX or RS version).
R9T vs CB1100 will remain a dilema in my head until i get myself together and buy one or the other
Excellent video - I'm going took at a second hand one this weekend - I guess I'm drawn to the old school vibe of it - fill it up each ride and don't worry :)
Nicely done Roger. I had not realised, as well as Porsche you were also into Bikes - like me. Great to have also had the chance to meet you at Bicester Heritage - the Porsche Christmas event. Thank you for the nice content.
Thanks, nice hearing from you again 👍🏼
Beautiful machine. The problem is the different alternatives you have for the same or less budget. If you see sideways... you do not buy it. I own a Yamaha XSR900: better performance, less weight, better fuel efficiency and costs 40% less than this BMW. This company does not know to offer value for your bucks. However, bikes are an emotional choice, and this cute bike has its niche. By the way, fantastic video.
Bit of "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" in your video.
Indeed !
Beautiful motorcycle and a superb video. Great review Roger 👍
Thanks Gio 👍🏼👍🏼
This is so perfect really timeless design ❤ love this bike ❤💫
I did enjoy the video nice job. I have the same bike. Have you any suggestions for after market pipes?
Is a 90 owner your spot on with your evaluation mine is a 21 model a little over 12,000 miles to saddlebags on the windshield
Really enjoyed your video, thank you very much! Checking one of these out and learned a thing or two your competitors did not mention. Definitely going for a test ride. Ride safe!
I love this bike, but I have to tell you something important... your front tire is mounted wrong! It is rolling backwards and that can create problems if you find water
Amazing bike , will get one soon for sure
Awesome review of a great bike . thanks
Fabulous video!!!
one of the best bike reviews I've seen, the R nineT is definately on my wish list, will you be doing more bike reviews ?
thanks Shaun - I might do more bike reviews, see how this one goes.
Awesome video, loved it 😊 thanks for sharing 😊
thanks Mohsin, good to see you
Really good video. I appreciate this bike much more now.
Am interested in it but am 6’4”…am I too tall to fit properly on it?
I'd go for the Guzzi V100 Mandello standard or S version
After a day’s ride, it was that “slim” seat that kept me away from buying; nice ride to the café though.
I got one at the end of March, after coming from a V4 tuono.
Love the analog feel and that you’ve got to ride the bike and not be a passenger.
The only things I don’t like are the lack of pillion/luggage capacity and the rear shock.
just sold my v4, loved it, but it was a beast and i'm more into adv now. yet have my eye on the nine t since i miss pavement g-forces...
Yes a very professional production.. well done great video. I have the scrambler.. keeps on growing on me- timeless keeper.
thanks Rich 👍🏼
Really enjoy your review. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Hi Rog, I would suspect there are better exhaust options at the dealer, I ended up with an Akrapovic on mine which was fitted at the dealer. Louder and sexier. Top video as usual👍
Hi Jon, which have you got?
Bmw r 1250rs. The exhaust was an optional extra. The original would've had a big chrome looking thing.
Superb review. You deserve to be noticed. I ride a BMWR1250R (perhaps the big brother of the R nineT). It does have more power, and does handle very well, but I like the simplicity of the R nineT. No LCD display, just ordinary clocks, I do not appreciate keyless ignition, and I wonder if the nineT is lighter in its handling, thus more pleasurable to ride. My BM is a bugger to start in cold weather, I wonder if the same is true of the nineT.
I tried one of those and was mightily impressed....in truth it probably does everything a little bit better.....but is slightly less involving and rewarding too.....both astonishing motorcycles in their own way....I deeply respect the 1250r....but Im as smitten with my r nie t perhaps more so...with every ride.
mate this is a brilliant video best bike review ive seen in a long time, hope you do some more
thanks Spook
I'm not a huge motorcycle fan anymore. But having wanted one when I was 16 and being swayed to wait a year to get my driving licence, I never even got to ride one. Hence, when I was in my very early 20's, I got myself the nearest to a motorbike. An MG Midget 8-))... Only heavy rain or dark, freezing winter nights ever forced me to put the hood up.
That aside, I still love the look of the more retro looking bikes. None of those fairings you get on most modern bikes nowadays.
So you're an ex Hells Angel are you? You've kept this a bit of a secret from us all Mr. B. 8-))...
A great video yet again Mr. B.. I hope Jilly's OK. Send her my regards and fingers crossed for her ;-))...
Your No1 Stalker 8-))...
Thanks TZ I never got round to raising hell however I’ve motor bicycled since my youth, hope you are well, Jilly says hello 👋🏼 and thank you
I love my 2020 9T Scrambler. Great review. Capturing the essence of riding in general and why this bike multiplies the factors that make riding great.
Do the clocks still quiver like a freshly made jelly? Can't judge from the short clip of them we get in this video. That alone put me off buying one early this year. For such an expensive bike you would expect the clocks to be fixed on properly not feel like they were held on with rubber bungee's.
Yes 👍
I Love my 2016 R9T All Black Gold pin stripes like JPS
Shares garage with
1998 R 1100 S ❤️
Thanks for making this video.
yr welcome
Great to see you are testing bike now Roger. I used to have a r nine t, lovely bike. Try a Ducati multistrada v4s which I have now, amazing bike. I’ve ordered an Ariel Ace Bkack Edition just before Xmas which I should get next month which will be good fun
Thanks GH I may just do as you suggest :-)
Really enjoyed that Roger - what's the song at the credits?
Gs for miles … nine t for smiles
I have a 2015 R9T and love it. I also have a 2015 Ducati 800 Classic. The Ducati always feels faster but we all know who wins. Please comment on your thoughts.
Great video roger really enjoyed watching it
What roads did you film it on please?
Thanks Andy, I was at evo triangle area Denbighshire - Roger
great review, love the bike but found this version to heavy so looking at the urban G/S as this is easier to handle for me
Hi - could you tell me how tall you are? I'm 6"1 and think I might find it a little cramped. Would love one though!
I’m 6’1” same ! I don’t find it cramped, thanks for looking in - Roger
Good video Rodger. Tubeless wheels were my only have to when I bought mine. I had the suspension set up at a track day and the feeling is night and day. Good luck bud 🏍️
thanks Barry 👍🏼
I stumbled upon this review and I’m not sure why I watched it, but it was interesting. I have some observations and comments based on my owning a RnineT for 3 years. This review seemed to focus on the retro qualities of the bike and its build qualities. I can agree it’s a fantastic looking machine that deserves all those accolades, but for me the ownership experience was terribly let down by some basics. Suspension was rock hard and dulled the riding experience immensely, for the price, having to shell out another couple of grand to fix the suspension on an initial expensive purchase was not nice and shouldn’t be. The seat felt like riding on a washboard and was the MOST uncomfortable I’ve ever had. I picked my bike up on an overcast day and it was spitting a little rain, when I stopped an hour later the crap the was flung up my back was not expected. For the price it could and should be better. Looks amazing but let down by basic practicality, so much so I went from riding my triumph regularly to the BMW just sitting in the shed. I sold it 3 years later and haven’t regretted it at all.
nice vid, greetz from Morocco
I can't believe there's no fuel gauge in this day and age.
Yeah, I have to carry my gas (1 gallon) with me. 🏍️💨🏁
Question, would an R Nine T make for a good beginner bike? especially for someone who has never rode a motorcycle before?
Beginners generally start motorcycling on a 125cc engined bike , r nine t is a 1200cc
Broke My Wallet......good bikes for the well healed.
Hi Roger, iam looking to buy a 9T .. can the pillion seat be improved..a bit wider.. I guess they may do a 1 piece with a round back.
I'll be going for a 21 variant .I hope I can wack on a Nav6 and mount in the center bar area.
I really love the black and silver,..looks really cool.
🙂👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Check out pier city customs for seat options, they’re helpful if you phone them
Fabulous bike. I love my 2018 R9T > I agree about the fiddly indicator switch . Its a pain in the arse! is there any way of changing it or making it bigger and less fiddly? I often miss it. Thanks. Mike
there's so many custom parts for this bike its odd no one as far as I know custom fits a better indicator switch
Great bike and film. Where are
those roads ?
Thanks Charlie, Denbighshire evo triangle
The incoming R12 nine T looks good, dare I say a more finished looking design ( fuel tank based on a 70's BMW machine). I hope they haven't f**cked it up although the new one is virtually the same mechanically, so its hard to see how they could.
Hi, thanks for the review. I’m in Australia and thinking about buying an R nine T. Do you think it will handle distance riding or is it more for shorter jaunts?
You’ll need a softer seat for longer rides, fortunately there are lots out there and easy to swop, also perhaps a screen
Great Vidoe! I love the look of this bike and I took it for test ride here in Munich and got disappointed by many things about this bike(scrambler), like the foot pegs always hitting your fit when you are standing in the traffic, the dry clutch is very punchy and not smooth and the vibration in a long ride is a bit annoying. For this price you can get triumph speed twin that is wayyyy better bike to ride, more comfortable and easy to ride. What do you think? How was your experience with this bike?
thanks Sam, speed twin is an excellent bike
Whats that intro song?
Super !
I agree sir
Great review,How tall are you sir?
im 6 foot one inch
@@RogerBaileyOnCars coincidentally I am exactly the same, thanks roger
Hey Roger, thank you for the video! There's a used 2015 R Nine T at my local dealership I'm looking at. Would you recommend it for a first bike? I was originally leaning towards a Honda or something I could easily repair if I damaged it, but honestly I'm just drawn to this bike and am thinking **** it, let's just do it and see what happens. Any advice? (P.S. I did well at my rider school if that means anything). Thanks in advance!
Its an easy bike to ride so yes its ok for a less experienced rider, check your licensing requirements as different countries have varying rules where horse power is concerned. and crash bars could be an idea to protect those vulnerable cylinder heads
I will! Thank you Roger!
How much is it ?
Lovely helmet. What is the brand and model?
It’s a DAVIDA helmet
Are you going to Media City on Saturday?
hi Tim, no
@@RogerBaileyOnCars do you know what’s on there? Thought this was right up your street
@@TheTimBushChannel it would be right up my street but I have to look after my wife who’s unwell
@@RogerBaileyOnCars sorry to hear this Roger. Perhaps in the future we can collaborate on something.👍
Tried it, found it too hard, and went for the much better z900rs... and cheaper also... The new R12 nineT price is even more ridiculous
