So you want to be an architect - Part 1

  • What does an architect do? An architect can perform many roles including design, specification writer, construction observation, ombudsman, and even in some cases construction, but for purposes of this discussion I would like to focus on design. According to one definition from my apple computer dictionary the architect is a person who is responsible for inventing or realizing a particular idea or project. Another definition states that an architect is a person who designs buildings and in many cases supervises their construction. Finally, Wikipedia’s definition works well. An architect is a person who translates a user’s requirements into a built environment. To summarize then, an architect, one; invents Two, design buildings. And three translate the users requirements into a built environment. In a way all three definitions fall under the category of design. For purposes of this discussion let’s talk about all three separately? First we know an architect Invents. An inventor creates something out of necessity that does not already exist. In a way every building, every house, every skyscraper, every thing architects create, if its original, is an invention. A building becomes something of an invention by virtue of the specific requirements of the client. It’s utility lies in its unique function for the person or people it is designed for. Second, we know an architect designs. To design is to plan with a specific purpose in mind. To me, designing implies a kind of thoughtful planning relative to a set of parameters. All kinds of things are designed after their invented. Vacuums, sneakers, printers, headphones, telephones, chairs, tables, silverware, and of course buildings. The architect designs the building after it’s conceived or invented. Thirdly, the architect is a translator in that they translate a users requirement into a built environment. When you first meet with an architect one of the first discussions is about the program. The program is essentially a description of everything that will be going into the building. If it’s a home, the program includes the number of powder rooms, bathrooms, bedrooms, how many car garage, etc… If it’s an industrial building the program includes machinery, offices, technology, etc… If it’s a skyscraper it includes, use, number of occupants, utility spaces, executive suites, number of floors, etc… In simple terms the architect takes the program and turns it into a building. So we see that while all three of these items, Invention, design and translation fall in under the category of design each is vital to the role of an architect. So if someone asks you what does an architect do? You know that to start with, they’re inventors, they’re designers and they’re translators. And that concludes the first part of our video series “so you want to be an architect”. I’m Doug Patt. See you next time.

    Being an architect is so varied. It's boring, exciting and stressful... But there is no better feeling than to watch a building you designed rise up from nothing. You get to work with interesting people and some real assholes. The hours can be long but the same can be said about engineering and a lot of other professions. As far as money goes it can be good or average again it depends on your priorities in life. A year ago I made a choice to work for a developer and now earn more than most senior level professionals, the sacrifice has been the 'architect lifestyle'... But that's what you do when you have kids!

    VERY NICE! I remember being 17 (1991) when I decided to become an architect. My father was a C.E. which contributed, but it all began one day walking home from school. It began to rain, so to stay dry, I went into a new model home nearby. I looked around, and found it interesting. I picked up some floorplans and took them home. I got a few pages of dad's graph paper and just for fun, designed my own floorplan using ideas from the floorplans. So today, after a long, hard road, I am an architect.

      architects get pigeon holed, people think all we do is draw when in reality our job is incredibly complex and requires not just design but technical and project management skills. Add to that the fact clients feel they can haggle with our fees in a way they'd never think of doing with a lawyer or an accountant. That said, if you have a good business plan, it can be a decent career

    @BurningSilk: Architects design the way buildings look and work, but engineers calculate all the things you are worried about.
    As an architect you would know how to approximate almost exactly the dimensions needed for a construction to be viable, but civil engineers are the experts who do the math (structural calculations). There are also engineers for installations (plumbing, electrical, etc). They all work as a team with the architect overseeing the project.

    every tool you use to write , draw or even sing is a way to translate your brain language and brain ideas to a form that people and even you could understand .. and each tool have its own unique way to describing the ideas , no tool can describe the idea for 100% for sure but when you have as many tools as you can , you can extract your ideas from your brain more accurate and properly , hand drawing for architect is one of the most important tool to describe and extract the ideas from your brain , the lucky architects only who have this gift and if you don't have it practice your hand asap.

    Yes, architects can also do interior design and furniture design. This is not to be confused with interior decoration, which deals with choosing decoration and utility elements for an existing space. Interior design deals with creating the actual space and elements in it. There are interior designers and decorators that are specialized to do exactly that and there is a lot to study and learn in these fields alone.

    Aw, five years ago I used to watch these videos trying to convince myself I could become an architect, mainly because my father wanted me to be one. I entered university and by week two I WAS DONE with architecture. Gladly, I found my way and true vocation on Information Design. Now I have my bachelor's degree and couldn't be more happy with my profession. What I learned was that, sure, architecture shares some fields with design, BUT IT IS BORING. You barely get to draw, to create, you barely get to imagine. If you are considering anything like graphic design, visual communication, art, fashion, industrial design, or so...DON'T CONSIDER ARCHITECTURE. DON'T. I have never felt so distant from my desire to pick up a pencil and sketchbook more than on those two weeks. Seriously, I cried at nights wishing I was painting color-wheels like design students instead of drawing the layout for a room with a bunch of rulers for the third time.

    right. manual drafting and sketching skills define an architect. CAD can be learned by a 5th grader. but the design comes from an experienced designer's mind. no harm done having as much skill as you can get. i think none can beat the aesthetic factor seen in a freehand drawing. still amazes.

    I've always had the dream of becoming an architect, I love to create, design, draw and invent, I always have. I can draw and design for hours and hours and never get bored, I'm 20 and the only profession I'm interested in is architect. However I've had and I still have a rough life situation, I don't go to college, and I'm so scared to follow my dream, but I just really want to design buildings :(

    yes architects can design chairs and furnitures because they understand ergonometric and anthropometrics too and most of all an architect is an artist.

    Think very very about what is it you think Architects do. Go and visit an architect office, see for yourself, please! Ask to spend a week there, ask questions to navigate past the finished glitz project and expose for your self the nuts and bolts of the industry. If you are smart become a lawyer, if you are technically minded go explore building or civil engineering, if you are an artistic type go do that - it doesn't have to be the 'be-all and end-all' of architecture which many are mislead to believe. I hope this helps you young people..

    i believe creative informative videos such as this are of great benefit to people who are interested in becoming or considering hiring the services of an architect .
    i support the sharing of information accumulated from years of study and hard work of Masters in the field .
    And it is those who are not masters or confident in there profession that may fell intimidated or insulted by the sharing such knowledge.
    keep up the good work.

    I guess I've always made little house designs all the time when I was little... But I also had a searing passion for astrophysics, and now years later, after hell and high water I've had to revaluate my life priorities because I literally didn't know what I wanted to do with my life anymore. I just began uni to get a degree in physics but I don't know what to do anymore. Recently I came across a thing offered by my university that took my personality, interests, skills, etc. And spit out "architect" as the number 1 career result for me... I'm very optimistic right now about the subject, but after focusing on physics for so long I don't really know what to expect? That's why I'm praying and doing my research before I do anything else. Maybe God had a different idea for me all along? IDK but maybe I can decide later on that this is the perfect blend for my creative and technical sides...

    hey guys and girls, I have a question. When u form an architectural team how do you work? Does everyone move aside and form an idea that is going to be put on the table and be discussed along with the other ones to lead to the final decision or you work as a team all the time?

    @Nightmonkey17 It's not that bad at all. The curriculum's ask for Calculus at the most. Some schools you can even slide by that and just take trig. It's not a big deal. HOWEVER, the more science and math courses and the more independent courses you take --like accounting and construction courses-- the more likely you'll be hired on.
    Architects are underrated as their 'job description' is A LOT more detailed than what most people realize.

    @WavieeAlex yes, you must practice the techniques and you will gain proficiency. Making many mistakes at first is common in any profession such as this. You will learn your own methods afterward and become more comfortable. You will see how practice pays off. It can be fun, for the rest of your life.

    You should consider educated the innocent of the business practice of architecture as well. After 25 years in the profession, the conclusion at which I've arrived is that the following must be followed in order to "succeed" in the business of architecture. Informed consent before one enters the field of study is a good idea.
    10 Laws of Professionalism
    1. One must completely disregard ALL previously accepted Universal laws of moral and ethical codes of conduct and principles (especially specific religious laws) such as: honesty, self-sacrifice, compassion, empathy, love, justice and righteousness, self control, gentleness, humility, “do unto others…”, etc. etc.
    2. One should not hesitate to be dishonest; that is lie whenever it personally benefits you. This the mark of a true professional.
    3. One should not feel guilt when stealing from others (ideas, work, acclaim, even money) if it will advance one’s own career. It is pragmatic and must be done.
    4. One must be completely self-absorbed and self centered and have concern only for one’s own ego/pride/personal glory, status, income;
    5. One should never exhibit empathy or compassion for others as this will only harm one’s own self interests and cause undue stress;
    6. One must always remember to be aggressive, brutal, ruthless in the pursuit of one’s own personal acclaim, pleasure and/or profits;
    7. Arrogance, pride and self-worship are all results of healthy self-esteem and those that do not exhibit these qualities of character do not do so only because they are lacking in the exceptional skills and talents that are required in order to be worshipped by others;
    8. Women especially should use charm, sex-appeal and sex in pursuit of one’s goals whenever possible. One should not be deceived into believing that hard work and natural talent alone will achieve one’s goals.
    9. One should have complete disregard for Universal or Godly rules of justice/ righteousness as these are old-fashioned ideas that will only hinder one in accomplishing one’s own success and glory,
    10. And above all of these truths one should remember to ultimately be guided by GREED and PRIDE as these two virtues are the driving forces in the business and professional pursuits whereby one will ultimately succeed and conquer/destroy others which is required in order for one to truly “succeed”.

    Yeah, pretty unfortunate. Some can't even afford education, so even if they acquaint themselves with guides or books, they won't look legit when it comes to a job interview. Living in Canada is pretty good though, 'cause education here is free (including health services) I think every country should have that. Every kid deserves a chance to do what they want in life.
