45 years of practice here. I’ve only ever used basic math, an understanding of percentage calculations, ratios and simple trig. An understanding of basic accounting is useful for project management and running your own practice. Structural engineers are the ones that do serious number crunching.

I used to love math, and still kinda do. But, for most people, the last 2 years of high school and the first 4 years of college don't have many mandatory math classes -- for the most part. Because of this, I went from a math wiz to doing math only when it's relevant. As an aspirational architect, I have to push myself back into math, or else my career will be even more difficult.

I am a mechnical engineer and had one course together with architects on structure. To be honest, they sucked at math, at least from my engineering perspective. But also, it's not like they need to solve any differential equations or any other complex math and thus it's completely okay. Math isn't as important for architects as engineers. What they need is creativity and a good sense of style.

As a Software Developer intern/Comp Sci major, I can totally relate to the misconception of math genius being a requirement. Before college, I wasn't the quickest learner in math, so some teachers asked if Comp Sci was really the right path for me. Firstly, I would say who are you to say what I'm capable of (not trying to be rude, but direct). Secondly, as a rising junior with two internships under my belt, I can say confidently that I have never used more than basic algebra in my code.
Of course, there are some roles that require more of an understanding of math (i.e., a Graphics Engineers must know linear algebra), but the standard dev (i.e., Web Dev) will not need that. Skills common among Software Devs/Engineers are we like to constantly learn and solve problems. The thing concepts you need to know (i.e., Data Structures & Algorithms) you learn over time.

Thank you so much for this video! I live in the UK and the school system here is particularly different. The grading system works in a way that if in high school you aren’t sitting ‘higher maths’, which allows you to score as high as a grade 9 (which is like an A*), then you are made to sit ‘foundation maths’. Over the years I’ve always been in higher maths until just before Covid my high school moved me to foundation maths, where the highest you can score is a grade 5 (which is like a B-). I thought I was finding higher maths quite good and understandable enough. That really knocked my self esteem because there are 4 sets of classes and if you happen to move from set 1 to set 2 (which is where I was) you are bound to foundation maths and forced to learn content only up to a grade 5. In my case my teacher for and unexplained reason refused to move me up, even though throughout the past 2 years I always scored w 5, and by the end of the year I scored a 5 in foundation maths (which was the highest I could get). I checked the Architecture entry requirements for university and you need to have studied a combination of at least: maths, science, arts and humanities. Now I need to apply for colleges and even though I got an A in physics I haven’t been allowed to study Physics in college due to my maths grade, not to even mention maths. Now I don’t know what to do on how to get into architecture. I feel like because my maths teacher never even gave me a chance despite making countless remarks about how he would allow some high achieving students to move to higher maths, when confronted on it, he told me to ”just focus on getting a 5 at best and not risk scoring anything lower in the higher maths.” I see the sentiment behind it even tho I think if I hadn’t been moved so suddenly under no grounds on actually struggling in higher maths at the time, then I would have at least been able to score a 6- 7 (B-A) and been able to meet the entry requirements in college. Now I’m basically being told that since Covid no one has given me a chance to risk it and prove that I can achieve in maths. And it doesn’t help to know that some students in higher maths got the chance to move down if they wanted to and some also flopped numerous times on exams but still didn’t get moved down. The whole situation feels to have been low key pre-meditated on my high school, I know there’s no point complaining but honestly I’ve never felt so constricted even before being able to step anywhere close to the field.

I failed calculus four times at the University at Buffalo, it was a prerequisite for all the courses that I did pass, primarily 'structures'. My first academic advisor waved me after I passed 'Structures 1', but then the State Board of Regents ruled that academic advisors could not do that, so after 5 years (2000-2005) of failing that prerequisite, I left college without my degree in architecture or urban planning. Since then, I have worked as a hotel porter at a Marriott in Saratoga Springs, a building designed by bad architects, they placed the boiler room (which leaks) over the main electrical room.

To the question "Do I need math?" there's gonna be a lot of "I've never used anything but basic math" answers. Someone even wrote that "Structural engineers are the ones that do serious number crunching". I once even read a comment "I haven't used the Pythagorean theorem yet today." and the author was suggesting that this argument proves that it's completely unnecessary to teach it to any young elementary school student at all, since he or she is apparently satisfied with what he or she understands to be "his or her own common sense" (whatever that means to anyone).
It's just that much more important than being able to calculate a particular problem is gaining "understanding". This is the thing that cannot be acquired except by gradually building up a foundation in mathematics and practicing and calculating and making mistakes and tormenting the brain. And then, when we forget how to compute the concrete, complex problems we were taught to compute in school, we are left with the really important things that can be gained by studying mathematics: the ability to break down a large problem into sub-problems, to reason and infer logically, to understand relationships, to understand what a number presented to us by "structural engineers" means, to be able to formulate a problem with absolute precision and hand it over to someone who understands it accurately. And finally, the realization that mathematics represents reality and that we have a connection to that reality.
I guess I wouldn't want an architect who designs something and then relies on someone else to chew on it and he just settles for something going right or wrong.

It depends on the school, but I’m pretty sure most, if not all, require physics. One of my schools only required math up to pre-calculus, but I found out one of my classmates “designed” a three-story building with the second story starting at 80’ feet high - in his THIRD year. 😑 I have plenty of other stories about that school and its students. I ended up transferring for multiple reasons from that school. The schools I looked into transferring required calculus or higher. Although, from real world experiences working at firms, Dami is pretty accurate in the way which math is used, I honestly think the schools that require a higher math class just use it to thin out the people from the programs and profession. There’s this mentality in our field that it requires us to push ourselves beyond our limit to be “worthy” of working in this field. Some of those who have only gone directly through an architecture path wholeheartedly believe this because of the amount of work we do, but that mentality is totally ignorant and egotistical. It is a lot of work, more work than most industries put into their field, and for less pay, but it’s very rare you’ll be put beyond your limits. Anyone can graduate and work in architecture, the school I transferred from proved that, not everyone can become a good architect, that school also proved that.

Let Me Try again. Architects do not need math anymore because Revit, or other BIM software, does that for you. Since Gehry started using parametrics in his work in the 90's the machines have been able to produce architecture that COULD NEVER be done without them. Soon AI will replace the profession entirely. I could be wrong, but I saw this coming years ago. As the great thinker Ray Kurtzweil , who had an 85% accuracy in predictions of tech for the last 30 years, believes the AI singularity is due in 2045. I think that, though that is the year the computer will be self aware, the exponential growth that is happening is making us, Architects, expendable.

An architect that builds software definitely needs to be very good at math. Otherwise, hire a software engineer, give him/her a competitive salary, treat them nicely (an invite to coffee and dinner is very good bonus) and explain to them what you need. Or.... you can buy Autodesk product and forget building one yourself.

One of my parents is an architect and I have a PhD in mathematics. No, architects essentially don't use any math.

A gentle reminder for all the introverts: architects do not NOT work alone. If that was the case then you'd need to understand structures, building services, landscaping, specialist design, acoustics, access, sustainability, planning, construction sequence, cost, construction methodologies and much more.
I cannot think of a worse profession to choose if you are an introvert honestly lol!

except the FSR calculations and rough cost estimates (section 1 and 2 of the video), we typically do that manually.
