      Mike, go rub one out before you go off on a tangent. I watched this at x2 speed and it was still too much fluff. And show less of your face, pretty please? I'm here for architecture. Put in the work and you'll get more subs. Keep to it.

    I find it amusing how in the office showcase everyone is doing interesting things like experimenting with technology presenting projects or just sketching and doing art when in reality 90% of architects 90% of the time just draw boring repetitive permits or building drawings, coordinate between clients consultants and builders about Mondaine details.

    My wife and I are working towards our licensure (her interior design and me architecture), and we both have had a sense that if we don't necessarily want to live entirely in an industry that can be highly prone to boom / bust economies we will need to adapt our artwork to other means of income. For now that has taken form in our paintings, we have dozens covering our apartment on every shelf and surface. Yet, art always seems to be a bit hard to sell, especially at prices that would sustain a healthy side business.

    • @larssveinsson
      @larssveinsson ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Art is fleeting. I think the only way for an architect to sell byproducts is to establish a name for oneself beforehand, through architecture.

    just for future reference... Gehry main source of income other than architecture is maintenance. His buildings are complex curves and bends and often cannot be maintained or cleaned by conventional methods... so he's developed a maintenance package through an association with his practice for rigging and scaffolding able to clean the buildings, mainly external facades. He makes that as an ongoing profit for all his buildings for as long as they are standing. Its a money machine. If you include that business he'd eclipse all others by a mile!
    also firm charges 10-15% of construction cost on fees and thats Gehry Partners. Then Franks time is 4-5% on top of that. so a $500M building has $50-75M in fees (of which frank is a share holder) and he earns personally $20-25M. keeping in mind $500M is an extremely small job for his firm.

      Hi Architect io! Happy to hear the content was helpful.

    •  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I would say you also need a lot of luck because under all these "7" architects at least hundreds if not thousands of underpaid people who aspire to the same "level of income" who wil never reach it, while having the same talent or at least the same experience and diplomas.
      Starchitects are part of what is wrong with our profession.

    Actually related to BIG, from a business standpoint it's more profitable to have the structural engineers in-house because the office and can charge a bigger fee and keep the difference between what the it charges and what it pays its employees.

    Loved your video, Ashley. You're pretty eloquent and entertaining. Top video quality and content; I just became a subscriber. One little thing: only some of these architects are the wealthiest; they're just the more trending; notable architects missing are Art Gensler or Bob Hillier, who had some of the largest firms in the world.

    The publications dont really put much income, but rather, their advertisement to their company/individual ideals, to attract attention/reputation/client. Archtects dont earn much frankly speaking, business men do. You can not deny that they are all good business men/women. But, love your video for that you are doing your own research and outputting to the world. This needs confidence and committment. Well done and keep going!!

    Awesome Video!! more motivation for architects and designers!! perhaps the title should refer to net worth instead of income? for example, Norman Foster annual income is about $2.6 million a year, highest paid. net worth of entire business is 240 million.
