I think architect engage in 'junk-talk' because they have not theory of architecture that deals with its true content: people and their buildings. A person who knows their craft can easily explain it to anyone. A person who doesn't engages in 'junk-talk' to impress themselves and some peers.
@@KJ-pu8dw Absolutely. I learned from the projects we did almost nothing but some cliches which I don't even understand why we need to emphasize, 1 year of my education life is now gone entirely. Everything I learned relied on my own struggles to find out what the hell was going on and how the hell could I improve my project.
I'm not an architect. Not even a student in architecture. I'm a disabled veteran and I only began studying architecture to become a better builder in certain building games (As that's what occupies most of my time nowadays). I've watched hours and hours of videos on this subject and I have to say that after finding your video I look at architecture as a whole in a completely different light. I had absolutely no idea going in that it was as deep as it is or how absolutely profound it can be. I most certainly have a newly formed respect for it in general and I don't see myself shying away from learning about it anytime soon. Thank you for this video even if I can't or won't ever use this in a professional setting it's been a revealing experience.
That’s it my friend. Architecture isnt quantum physics or metaphysics. It requires technical knowledge, design skills, artistic sensibility, creativity and a curious mind. These are all skills that any person of average intelligence can learn and apply. Good luck to you and never stop reading and learning; delve into a bit of anthropology, psychology, sociology, philosophy and history and I give you my word you’ll be designing better buildings than many people who go to architecture school and build according to learned protocols.

I absolutely love the way you explain everything, you make more sense than my lecturers do at uni. We get thrown into the deep end and are expected to develop our own concepts, carry them out and present them when they never explained it to us in depth. You are saving my grades lmao.
You can start now. Why wait? You can start by looking at books and pictures of Architects philosophy and why they do what they do. Do urban sketching, draw buildings of wherever you are will help you a lot. Take lots of art classes will be a plus too.
Cool that u already know your proffesion. I'm 14 and I seriously don't know what my proffesion is I have a lot of things I love and couldn't choose between them! I love drawing and I also love singing (I'm better with singing and would love to sing on a big stage one day) I seriously don't know what tooo do later..I like the idea of being a doctor too.
There's this really cool software called Archicad, in which you can build houses. Honestly, after seeing alot of young kids spending hours making beautiful architectural spaces on minecraft, if they had done it on Archicad or Revit, they'll dominate the architectural field when they grow up.

One of the best videos I have watched on concept development. I wish I had seen your videos during my course of study in architecture. Loved the way how it transitioned from one stage of development to the next. Even though I graduated in architecture without understanding why a concept was necessary, this video helped me realize the necessity of a concept and the idea of summarizing all the ideas into a sheet for client discussion is brilliant. Thank you for helping people like me to understand more about this amazing field. This video cleared so many doubts I had in mind, which I thought might be made fun of if I had asked a senior since I am expected to know these basic details because I am a graduate.If possible, could you please do a video on how to analyze a building at a visual scale and transfer it to a drawing to scale.

If we both listened to the same lecture we would naturally take away different things; informed by our life experience. It's no surprise then that our relatively short time in school doesn't teach us everything we need to know about design, or architecture, or anything in too much detail. If we're lucky it equips us with new ways to see the world and the confidence to question things we don't understand. Kudos to you for recognizing that learning doesn't end at university. @@30by40 The problem in architecture school is lack of a clear theory of design and a greater theory of architecture. I don't mean an 'art' theory, but as I've commented above, a theory about buildings as they are used by people. My engineering friends were taught engineering design as a system of connections, in architecture we were not taught anything except how to draw, in effect. Like teaching swimming by throwing a non-swimmer in the pool, or nuclear physics by dropping atom bombs. HIghly ineffective and practically irrelevant.
If you are a client about to build a house, and need something specific rather than an off-the-shelf design, this series is a must. Understand the constraints of budget, materials, etc so you can be an informed partner in your house rather than a passive (and ultimately frustrated) bystander.
Your video really helps young architecture students that do not have a clear vision of the process to follow when talking about developing a concept. Thank you for your videos and the simplicity behind them. I know there is a lot of work behind the scenes, but i bet it pays off!

As an architecture student in Turkey and also a TH-camr which has a fame in the country. I always try to implement creativity and the importance of thinking to my audience. Unlike most of courses and presentations, I always found narrative telling exiting and more effective. I do some fun content in my TH-cam channel for views, however my first desire is to create a content that tells people "You are the most important source on the Earth, you have the organ that created all opportunities, invented electricity, made us speak worldwide or go to the moon... You are the solution for every problem.. Be aware of yourself" I loved your content on architecture, cause you made some people to fall in love with thinking and problem solving. your way of telling the story behind concept is magnificent. SInce my first year as a student in architecture, I have wished for someone to explain these basics to me. i wish i had watched this video before submitting my portfolios just a month ago! this is exactly what we were taught in uni and this video explains it sooooo clear - perhaps better than my tutors as they instilled concepts alongside your work progress so when you're stuck your tutor would stop inspiring you, whereas this uses an well established project to illustrate which could have given me more directions on how to carry on. thank you.

I have to say, that I LOVED this video. As a student, I am trying to approach design for others for the first time and while our lectures have given us a lot of historical perspective, the emotion involved in home design is harder to capture. I think you have explained that in a tangible way, if that is possible. So much so, I'm sending the lecturer a link because I think he may want to recommend this to the class. To the 9 year old who commented below, hang onto that dream. I was 13 when I realised I wanted to design buildings. I am 51 this year and I have just started my Building Design course.

This is such great information! I’m a draftsman, and work with architects trying to overcome design problems on older houses. None of these older homes offer the amenities of newer homes, and it is our challenge to bring these homes up to date. I truly appreciate the time you take to explain everything in such detail. Loved this video - I’m a software engineer with a budding interest in architecture. great video...you articulate the conceptual design process very well...made me realize that I myself go through all of these stages in some degree as I start a new project...it's nice to see that I'm on the right path. I love this process the most I think it feeds my soul. I think I'll stop being so hard on myself from now on as I see now that the evolution of the design is always continuously moving and changing as I get more client feed back and deal with city codes. this use to bother me and made me a little less confident of my ability to "nail it"....I realized that the end product was always better after I let go and listened to the clients concerns and requests for changes.....I love Architecture!

It is kind of ironic that I just found your comment. I'm a 16 year old student and I'm currently struggling to decide whether I'll study physics (specifically to do experimental physics later on) or architecture (rather thinking about doing it "the social way" and trying to work in developing countries with sustainable technologies). Now I don't really know of any professional I could ask for advice concerning this decision. If you'd mind telling me your opinion on this issue I'd really really appreciate it a lot!
As an architect with 50 years of experience designing a wide range of building types this is the best presentation of concept and how it informs design that I have ever come across. I would live to see how he deals with a tight urban space which both more problems (constraints) , and more opportunities for the concept to draw from its context.
This is brilliant, and a delight to watch - thank you! I've been informing myself about IT architecture in the past few weeks, and for some reason the algorithm gods thought this video was related. SW design involves thinking about things like: - the architectural precedents for systems of this type - regulatory and budget constraints - how users will need to navigate in the system, what public and private spaces need setting up - what the application landscape looks like that the system will be integrated into - what platform it will run on - how it will interact with other systems - the technology stack that will be used to build it... Turns out - the algorithm wasn't wrong. Many of the principles you presented are very much applicable to the design of software.

I'm actually aspiring to be an illustrator, but at the moment I'm making myself work on a background for a piece of fan art of fan fiction, and decided to include a part of the castle from the story in it. Only problem? The fan fiction gives little to no description on the castle and the area the piece is set in. SO! I am now trying to design a castle(or part of it, at least) for my illustration and this video is definitely helping me to refine my thought process so that I'm not as lost. Thank you for the video!

It's hard with new projects to be restrained and not jump into designing too deeply before the limits of budget and scope are set. Just making a program is not enough. While the conceptual talk is a good refresher for me and inspiring because you do it so well, I am most helped here by being reminded to put limits on early and resolve them at the program level before getting attached to any sort of form or scale - just as much for me as the client. Nice overview on architecture design. Many people new to home building only use a small part of such an approach when getting into a plan to build. If we both listened to the same lecture we would naturally take away different things; informed by our life experience. It's no surprise then that our relatively short time in school doesn't teach us everything we need to know about design, or architecture, or anything in too much detail. If we're lucky it equips us with new ways to see the world and the confidence to question things we don't understand. Kudos to you for recognizing that learning doesn't end at university.

@@30by40 The problem in architecture school is lack of a clear theory of design and a greater theory of architecture. I don't mean an 'art' theory, but as I've commented above, a theory about buildings as they are used by people. My engineering friends were taught engineering design as a system of connections, in architecture we were not taught anything except how to draw, in effect. Like teaching swimming by throwing a non-swimmer in the pool, or nuclear physics by dropping atom bombs. HIghly ineffective and practically irrelevant.
If you are a client about to build a house, and need something specific rather than an off-the-shelf design, this series is a must. Understand the constraints of budget, materials, etc so you can be an informed partner in your house rather than a passive (and ultimately frustrated) bystander.
Your video really helps young architecture students that do not have a clear vision of the process to follow when talking about developing a concept. Thank you for your videos and the simplicity behind them. I know there is a lot of work behind the scenes, but i bet it pays off!

As an architecture student in Turkey and also a TH-camr which has a fame in the country. I always try to implement creativity and the importance of thinking to my audience. Unlike most of courses and presentations, I always found narrative telling exiting and more effective. I do some fun content in my TH-cam channel for views, however my first desire is to create a content that tells people "You are the most important source on the Earth, you have the organ that created all opportunities, invented electricity, made us speak worldwide or go to the moon... You are the solution for every problem.. Be aware of yourself" I loved your content on architecture, cause you made some people to fall in love with thinking and problem solving. your way of telling the story behind concept is magnificent. SInce my first year as a student in architecture, I have wished for someone to explain these basics to me. i wish i had watched this video before submitting my portfolios just a month ago! this is exactly what we were taught in uni and this video explains it sooooo clear - perhaps better than my tutors as they instilled concepts alongside your work progress so when you're stuck your tutor would stop inspiring you, whereas this uses an well established project to illustrate which could have given me more directions on how to carry on. thank you.

I have to say, that I LOVED this video. As a student, I am trying to approach design for others for the first time and while our lectures have given us a lot of historical perspective, the emotion involved in home design is harder to capture. I think you have explained that in a tangible way, if that is possible. So much so, I'm sending the lecturer a link because I think he may want to recommend this to the class.
To the 9 year old who commented below, hang onto that dream. I was 13 when I realised I wanted to design buildings. I am 51 this year and I have just started my Building Design course.

This is such great information! I’m a draftsman, and work with architects trying to overcome design problems on older houses. None of these older homes offer the amenities of newer homes, and it is our challenge to bring these homes up to date. I truly appreciate the time you take to explain everything in such detail. great video...you articulate the conceptual design process very well...made me realize that I myself go through all of these stages in some degree as I start a new project...it's nice to see that I'm on the right path. I love this process the most I think it feeds my soul. I think I'll stop being so hard on myself from now on as I see now that the evolution of the design is always continuously moving and changing as I get more client feed back and deal with city codes. this use to bother me and made me a little less confident of my ability to "nail it"....I realized that the end product was always better after I let go and listened to the clients concerns and requests for changes.....I love Architecture!

It is kind of ironic that I just found your comment. I'm a 16 year old student and I'm currently struggling to decide whether I'll study physics (specifically to do experimental physics later on) or architecture (rather thinking about doing it "the social way" and trying to work in developing countries with sustainable technologies).
Now I don't really know of any professional I could ask for advice concerning this decision. If you'd mind telling me your opinion on this issue I'd really really appreciate it a lot!
As an architect with 50 years of experience designing a wide range of building types this is the best presentation of concept and how it informs design that I have ever come across. I would live to see how he deals with a tight urban space which both more problems (constraints) , and more opportunities for the concept to draw from its context.

I've been informing myself about IT architecture in the past few weeks, and for some reason the algorithm gods thought this video was related.
SW design involves thinking about things like:
- the architectural precedents for systems of this type
- regulatory and budget constraints
- how users will need to navigate in the system, what public and private spaces need setting up
- what the application landscape looks like that the system will be integrated into
- what platform it will run on
- how it will interact with other systems
- the technology stack that will be used to build it...
Turns out - the algorithm wasn't wrong. Many of the principles you presented are very much applicable to the design of software.

I'm actually aspiring to be an illustrator, but at the moment I'm making myself work on a background for a piece of fan art of fan fiction, and decided to include a part of the castle from the story in it. Only problem? The fan fiction gives little to no description on the castle and the area the piece is set in. SO! I am now trying to design a castle(or part of it, at least) for my illustration and this video is definitely helping me to refine my thought process so that I'm not as lost. Thank you for the video!

It's hard with new projects to be restrained and not jump into designing too deeply before the limits of budget and scope are set. Just making a program is not enough. While the conceptual talk is a good refresher for me and inspiring because you do it so well, I am most helped here by being reminded to put limits on early and resolve them at the program level before getting attached to any sort of form or scale - just as much for me as the client. Thanks!

Nice overview on architecture design. Many people new to home building only use a small part of such an approach when getting into a plan to build. Further, this is why we love to emphasis the wisdom's around architectural expertise to capture more valued outcomes in designs; to consider it micro and macro environments, benefits, flow and problem solving as you mention!
