So you want to be an architect - Part 2

  • Hi. My name is Doug Patt. And this is So You want to be an Architect? A seven part series exploring the architect. This is lesson two. What does an architect make? On the surface this sounds like a dumb question. An architect makes buildings. But if you look below the surface youll see that the answer is much more meaningful. Ralph Waldo Emerson (who lived from 1803 1882), was a well-known writer, philosopher and poet. He said of Greek architecture, it is the flowering of geometry. Translated, Emerson was referring to the Greek architects elaboration and mastery of shape and form. Anne Louise Germaine de Stael (who lived from 1766 1817) is a little known Swiss author who lived in Paris and abroad. She is quoted as saying architecture is frozen music. In simple terms her comment means that architects make a kind of static harmony of sound. Philip Schaff (who lived from 1819 1893) was a Swiss born, Protestant theologian. He said, architecture is a handmaid of devotion, a beautiful church is a sermon in stone. Elaborating a bit on Shaffs comment we can imply that architecture, like a sermon, is also a kind of message or story. And finally John Ruskin an author, poet and artist (who lived from 1819 1900) said of architecture that the mere sight of it, may contribute to (his) mental health, power and pleasure. In other words architecture is an Inspiration. So, lets move beyond the specifics of what each person what referring to and draw some general conclusions. In simple terms, these four individuals tell us then that an architect makes form, stories, music and inspiration. So lets take a look at a couple examples of each. When I think of architecture as shape or form I think of Frank Gehry, famous for pushing the limits of modern technology while creating monuments to modern engineering and form making. Some examples of this are his museum in Bilboa, the Stata Center or his Disney concert hall. When I think of architecture telling me a story I think of Frank Lloyd wrights Guggenheim museum that tells a story from the outside about how one moves through the spiraling galleries on the inside. Or the Pompidou center in Paris that tells a color-coded story from the outside about the mechanical inner workings that make this machine like building function on the inside. When I think of architecture as beautiful music I think of the buildings of Eero Saarinen whos work resembles naturally soaring forms as they strain to hit the high note or the way Frank Lloyd Wrights falling water harmoniously blends into nature and almost sings with the waterfall it sits above. When I think of architecture as an inspiration I think of the great cathedrals of Europe & the US or the great skyscrapers of our cities. So while some may think that architecture is just about making buildings you know that making architecture is about making much more than just a box with windows. Its about making form, story, music and Inspiration. And that concludes the second part of our video series so you want to be an architect. Im Doug Patt. See you next time on how to architect.

hey dingus wow!!! Hi, this was 9 years ago! Okay so I graduated as an architect in 2016, by that time I found out I was more into urban planning so I went on and got a specialized masters in urban planning and urban project management. I am now working as a business developer for a company that specializes in individual mobility and parking solutions. I know, not what you would expect from an architect but I think our studies open our minds to being able to work as almost anything. Maybe not a nurse or a doctor lol.
So yeah, architecture school was definitely one of the most challenging times of my life and working in architecture firms very tiring (all nighters are NOT for me) but I am so happy and proud to be an architect 😊

Here are two good methods, I suggest you do the first one then the second, or both simultaneously-
      1. Draw at least one building that you find interesting or cool or weird or just any building that intrigues you that you see or pass by once a day. Start from pictures of the house and work your way to doing it from memory.
      2. Draw a box- yes a box- and keep shaving it down until you reach a shape that you think would be nice for a building of your choosing. Then after that go on to the finer details.
This is essentially training your mind to get the idea of how to design and think of your own ideas to create ideas for building houses. The more you do it, the better you'll get and the closer you'll get to achieving your goal. Hope this helped! :)

I had the luck of starting out with drawing, (which i can safely say i am decent at it) and i've been interested in Architecture for about...maybe 4 to 5 years now. don't panic and try to learn everything at once. art is quite a complicated but wonderful thing to learn. you'll have to know how to paint (basics) and sketch. good luck :)

Most of the examples you gave have fundamental problems, like the museum in Bilbao, Spain, has a space (the one that haves a window, you can see it from the bridge) that doesnt have any use. The museum in New York have problems with the position of the art and people who are allways fighting against gravity and the insufficent bathrooms. 1/4 part of the building of Frank Lloyd W. were demolished.

Actually it was Mimar Sinan, an Ottoman architect, civil engineer and warrior that said that. But who knows for sure, perhaps he found it written on papyrus and then destroyed it and took credit. Anything is possible. He was close friends with Michelangelo they'd write letters to eachother discussing very cool stuff. Also Leonardo Da Vinci was one of the homies. I just made this shit up.

(you know, "green" buildings and such :D) so it depends ^^

+The Exotic Gamer Glad I helped you 😊 But one more thing, Don't do it for the money (Archetiect's get lots of money :0). Do it for the passion and love you put in to your job ;) When I become an architect, I can build a big house for my family to live in and... yea mostly houses XD I got inspired by this from building a lego house 😂

Only starving architects draw with carbon tip sticks. In this modern world we use computer software. This guy is old.

I'm an architecture student, and what I found out is that you don't need to be good in art, meaning you do not need to have excellent painting, drawing, sculpting skills. These can be easily taught to you. What you need is to be able to think outside the box. The goal of an architect is to solve multi-dimensional problems. You must also have a good eye for detail.

Very, very poor explanation and the fact that is for beginners doesn't make it better. Personally, I hate romanticizing architecture especially this white washed crap with churches and poetry. All most important features are missed: facilitator of human interactions, inclusion, enabler of spatial justice, focus on inclusivity, listener, social contribution, shaping city without discrimination. Sorry but this poetry, music and symmetry is important but not even close as to the real purposes of architecture and architect.
