I feel like the near end of the game, the enemies should of shown greater mutations than at the beginning. In Dead Space, the charred Necromorphs become more common since the Marker is having great influence on them. In Colistoll Protocall, you're still fighting the same enemies even though things infestation is getting more complicated.

    • @jordangarcia465
      @jordangarcia465 ปีที่แล้ว +117

yeah, and the gimmick with the tentacles mutating enemies was underutilized. They could've mutated into new enemy types with entirely different functions and attacks, but instead they just explode into these raw chickens with the only difference being more health.

They even had that set up. When you get the creepy shit straight from Siren Blood Curse, the longer their infection the more violent and extreme the 'evolution'. Atleast until you get a very old infected which stabilizes into a reasonable-ish specialized form... Yet after those first few creepy shinobu things there's nothing new in the general infected.

I highly disagree, I’m playing my ng+ right now and boy does the fully upgraded baton demolish these blistered fools. I used to be going three full combos on grunts with it half upgraded and four with none, now I just need two. Ultimately it seems I have to hit them 4-5 times less than half and close to half as much with no upgrades to get a full melee kill

  • @Mark-zo1hs
    @Mark-zo1hs ปีที่แล้ว +194

I feel like the main problem is that Callisto tried to be a third-person shooter game but the whole emphasis on melee combat via the stun baton kind of puts it in a stalemate. Dead Space had you fight multiple enemies at the same time. In Callisto, they are placed in such a way that it is possible to take out the majority of them using the stun baton. Also, the story kind of has some issues. Jacob never questions Elias for the majority of the time they spent working except near the end when he dies. Plus the whole thing about evolving to colonize space doesn't make sense because they colonized Europa and are even terraforming Callisto.

    • @redcenturion88

To be quite frank with you, I upgraded my weapons to get explosive shots. Moreover, you can unlock a certain heavy attack that allows you to hit multiple targets with the stun baton.
There is this one boss fight by where you’re fighting the brute inside of a computer server room after you get locked in your cell again. That to me was kind of annoying because I felt like you had to buy ammo in order to take him out. I also didn’t like the loot boxes that had a fucking leech in there.
I upgraded my grip, and I was able to take out a brute by literally just throwing shit at him.
I used the grip to throw shit at the biophages, I also threw them into their hazards. Honestly the game is fun I’d give it a nine out of 10.
My only complaint is that I couldn’t upgrade everything.
The game is good. It isn’t dead space. But it’s good.

But that being said, the game raises a very difficult but very human question about responsibility and blame when it reveals that Jacob DID in fact know about the Biophage capsules he was transporting and simply turned a blind eye to it. It’s that age old question of; if you see evil being committed and you do nothing about it, are you just as complicit because you could have prevented the evil by just doing the right thing when the opportunity arose?

I think it really just comes down to him being both new, and- ironically- _because of_ him not being self serving.
Not being selfish means he has a sense of empathy, and a connection with his emotions- meaning he can be manipulated, _even when there isn't any evidence that he is realistically the one at fault._
Hell, it's nearly spelled out as such during the section where he starts blaming himself for shit going wrong that he had no way of stopping.
In otherwords, the fact he isn't a complete piece of crap means that everyone else- who have been in Survival Mode for longer due to having been in the middle of the cluster fluff from the beginning, and thus have had their emotions suppressed by the extended stress response- is willing to basically gaslight him into complying with their demands.
Hell, Elias _not_ being like everyone else on the moon and NOT just planning on using and losing Jacob is more of a surprise.

There were a few points you referenced should not have made it through testing into the final game. My biggest issue is the lack of Callisto credits all throughout the game. I am pretty sure that the jump scare at the end was actually just a hallucination, like the co-pilot was throughout the game. I had a theory that maybe the brain stem monitor thing was prompting traumatic memories as a form of punishment to the prisoners. Jacob is presumed to be a sane person but suddenly can't stop seeing the things he feels guilty over he even complains about the implant hurting right after an episode. Its like a way to make you never forget what you did and maybe even cause some people to empathize with their victims. Black iron was a max security prison for murders after all.
FYI to conserve charges use the force grip to bring them to you then drop them and immediately melee them in the face. You home run their face causing them to fly back 15 feet. This can buy you some room but also works almost as a throw to chuck them into environmental hazards. The game doesn't advertise this ability I only found out when I was trying to achievement hunt.
They updated the game again on the 15th and id say at this point they addressed a lot of the balance issues (i.e. weapon switching). Not necessarily all fixed, but in a better state and I recommend people give this another try.

Regarding the train ride you were stuck at for a long time, each of the four boxes give you a bunch of gravity glove charges that you can use to get through the entire ride without firing a single bullet. I’m pretty sure that’s how you’re meant to play it there. Just have like 2 or 3 charges and be quick with tossing them off, they only spawn in one area at a time so as long as you’re paying attention to where they’ll come from next you should be good.
Great video though, I had a lot of fun with callisto, I’m excited for the harder difficulty that they’re adding.

Played the game last week, was kinda bummed at how short it was. There were some good and bad things about it.
    Pros
    1. Engaging storyline. The more I played it, the more I wanted to see what happened next. I'm not a horror fan in general, so stuff like this has to happen to get me committed.
    2. Weaponry. The modular system for the ranged weapons was pretty ingenious; the Hand Cannon, Skunk Gun, and Tactical Pistol sharing the same one handed stock and the Riot Gun and Assault Rifle sharing the two handed stock.
    3. Locations. Always nice to see new areas to cause mayhem in.
    Cons
    1. Grouped combat. Taking on a whole horde when ranged weaponry isn't that effective sucks, especially once they mutate.
    2. Glitches. Aside from crashing a few times, there was one time when I thought I had turned on High Contrast mode. The whole area appearing to show the boundary and object planes.
    3. Two-Heads. The explosive shots on the Hand Cannon (available only once it's fully upgraded) are a must. At least two Boom! shots puts them down for the whacking.
    4. Lack of balance in upgrades. The ranged weapons have much simpler skill tree branches than the Stun Baton and GRP. And getting all the creds without stocking up your Inventory with valuable contraband and having to sacrifice ammo is a grind.
All in all, I'm waiting to see how New Game Plus mode changes things up.

Then you meet him and he gets to use the force and throw you around a bit. He's under a LOT of stress and because you are the new guy and all hell breaks loose it makes since to think you had something to do with it, saying this is his kingdom only to get swarmed and fall out a window like a bad ass.

A lot of Jacob's character is given to you up front and is "fleshed out" (honestly, very minimally) through some data recordings. Basically it's shown from the get go that he and Max have been doing this "cargo route" for a long while now and they both have their suspicions about it. Jacob even goes out of his way to brush Max off multiple times and to ignore the signs that what they were doing was more than transporting "medical supplies" as he told himself. The "reveal" later in the game shows that he had his suspicions and even knew that they were purposefully trying to hide contraband in the supplies; he may not have realized what the sample itself was, but he knew that they were doing shady shite. Basically the main theme surrounding Callisto Protocol is that of atonement and redemption. Jacob & Max knew that they were involved in much more than "transporting medical supplies," Jacob even confirmed prior to the events on Europa; he actively pushed that information into the back of his mind and lied to himself to create essentially a repressed/fragmented memory (can we talk about how before his memory is "fixed" the toy box looks like a purple/black checkered "missing asset" cube you'd find in a game/3D rendering program? lol). I do get your point about it being a bit clunky, but ultimately it's the same "twist" Dead Space had; Issac already knew what happened to Nicole and that some seriously wrong stuff was happening; Kendra even made the comment foreshadowing the "reveal" that the full video (which he had watched multiple times) showed her death. Issac was a the "lover going to save his damsel in distress" trope from the beginning, but the twist was that he knew he already failed and blamed himself (which towards the end of the first game and throughout the second game he has to learn to accept his guilt and to move on from it). Much in the same fashion, Jacob already knows that he's to some extent culpable for what happened on Europa and tries to absolve himself of that guilt/sin by saying "it was just another job"; but he had been doing that job long enough and taking the cash to not ask questions to know it was "wrong."
As for character development, it's a bit hit and miss and I do agree with that; mainly I give it a begrudging pass because the game isn't designed to stand on it's own and that's clear from the get go (setting aside that the main story ending beats you upside the head with "we'll finish it properly with the DLC like DS3 & Awakening") and this is meant to be looked as part of a whole not a standalone game. This is one of my pet peeves with media these days... but then again, I love Dead Space, Mass Effect, and a couple other big IPs that basically did exactly that; write them as a fairly large over-arching story (though out of them, Dead Space and to some extent ME1 do actually stand on their own as sort of closed stories). I personally don't think we were supposed to feel all that attached to Elias to be honest with you; I don't think he wasn't supposed to be our companion or friend with how he's presented in the game. In fact I would argue that he's not meant to be a character in so much as a mirror for Jacob. The narrative goes out of it's way to pair the two up and to show a lot of similarities, then asks the question a lot of people might have had on their mind about "are we helping a bad guy break free?" Jacob tries to justify Elias' actions the same way he justified his greed ignoring something that was clearly wrong and that ended up killing a lot of people; Elias goes out of his way to squash Jacob's justifying and to admit that he was like him at one point, eventually realizing that he needed to take responsibility for what choices he made. Elias wasn't meant to be our friend, he was meant to give Jacob a reality check and to spur the character's "self-realization" and eventual redemption arc. This is made even more clear when Dani cuts out Elias' CORE despite Jacob's protests, Dani's response was basically "you've been doing this all game long to survive, NOW it's a problem because you got to know one of their names?" That moment is meant to have Jacob (and by extension the player) reflect that this game mechanic/violently grotesque act we've become complacent with is our choice, (granted it's done in the name of survival and I would still do it myself in that situation myself) this is the part where Jacob is supposed to stop lying to himself and start accepting that his actions put him where he is.
Ferris just seemed like the typical "I love my job a bit too much" prison guard, I do wish there was some more development on him given that they seemed to hype him up as a sort of Nemesis type character (somehow I feel like we're gonna see him again despite it not making too much sense...). I don't know if they're going to make Dani into "Ellie" to be honest with you, I do feel like they are trying to nudge her towards the love interest route, that I don't disagree with. If it wasn't for the DLC cliff-hanger ending, I would have said they were going to make her the main character for the sequel (I suppose they still could?) but I think she's being more developed to be a Carver/Ellie hybrid in terms of the character. Someone who will ultimately have to face her own guilt and rage, but will likely end up forgiving Jacob and probably falling for him. I wouldn't be shocked if they set up the sequel to have a Dead Space 3 style co-op system using the two of them.
Anyways, I think I rambled on enough... there's plenty more to say about the game. It was a good love letter to it's parent (Dead Space) and that it would be less Dead Space 4 or "Dead Space we have at home" and more "a concurrent evolution/variant of Dead Space." It's got protentional and I'll have to wait for the DLC/Sequel to really see if they grow this IP properly... Well keep up the great videos! Been binging a ton of them this past few weeks, enjoying them a lot!
PS- Does anyone else miss the lack of ancillary stories/media that Dead Space had when it launched? the anime/comics/websites/etc.? I felt it made that universe so much cooler.

Our boxes are made in multiple countries and are shipped all around the world. There is no way in hell unless they do a lot of googling, read our product pages, or ask questions that a truck driver knows what the hell they are transporting every time. For the game. It was cool, but the melee combat with your main weapon got so boring and repetitive. The cost wasn't worth it due to how short it was. For the death scenes it was very Newer Tomb Raideresque. They murdered croft in such brutal ways, but there was 0 emotional attachment so it was kind of meh.

in regards to the transporting of the biophage; it kinda makes sense that jacob sort of blocked it out of his mind
we didnt see him open the actual canister that contains the parasite, he only held the canister and said "we dont need to know, its just another job"
he only realizes that its the parasite after he sees all the things he sees and finds the same container near the dead creature
only THEN does he realize that the SAME damn crate he was transporting is here, only THEN does he open it, realize its exactly the same and checks the secret compartment and THEN he pulls it out and actually opens it and realizes "holy shit, the canisters hidden under the medicine actually hold some kinda parasite, and after everything i have seen, i realize, this little parasite i have been transporting must have been the cause of it all"
but i also agree, jacob is essentially innocent in all this
he KNOWS he's transporting some strange canisters that are hidden underneath medicine and must be secreitive for a reason, but its JUST a canister - it could be, as you said, native creatures or some other type of tissue samples
if we are given a job that pays well and are told NOT to open the cargo we are transporting: chances are we are not going to open the cargo, ESPECIALLY if its just a small canister.
if its a canister we cant really say our humanity made us question if we where transporting humans or human organs or somthing, its just a canister that could maybe hold a small rat.
we get paid to do a job and we do it
jacob was doing that, he saw, maybe from accident or maybe he was curious, he checked the cargo and saw, medicine, seems legit, and hey a secret compartment....but it could be just a rat or tissue samples. my pay isent worth opening it and risking breaking it

I dont get it. How do you need it to be easier ? You literally hold left/a dodge and the hold right/d until the enemy attacks and then repeat. A single enemy can literally not hit you if you do this even a boss. just dodge the chain of attacks shoot once or twice and dodge again its not hard at all. Arguably the encounters with multiple enemies were tough sometimes and even then dodging made sure that you cant get hit (except for the spitting guys, however you can literally walk sideways and they miss). I dont understand this point at all, maybe its just the performance because I played on ps5 or maybe you tried to time the dodge instead of just holding but if not then thats a huge skill issue man

And a lot more gameplay changes need to be made to bring it up to snuff with modern games. The difficulty you felt might have just been jank brother. I would have been a little bit more satisfied with having multiple melee weapons that are good at taking out certain kinds of monsters depending on the form they take. Have a monster that has multiple tentacle-like limbs? Have a chainsaw or plasma saw weapon that can sever the limbs before reverting to the stun baton to take them out. Have an enemy that evolved to have hardened armor like sections on their body? Have a kinetic assisted power mining pick used to clear mines to crumple that armor. All I'm saying is that the stun baton would be your main way of dealing damage, but you can also focus on weapons that can help you overcome certain enemy types that will get in your way. The enemies are also a character in this game, but the way the game presents them to us is very minimal that it pales compared to the number of enemies you see in Dead Space.

Actually from what I understand, Ellie saw that Jacob had made multiple deliveries to the place of the outbreak (even though other ships did too). So I guess she just decided his specifically was suspicious. When she saw that he hadn’t actually been guilty of delivering the virus or whatever, her anger subsided and she visually became kinder….even though he actual had delivered it…just didn’t remember or know. She just didn’t find it.

Still her actions for basically the whole game are kinda reckless. She knew what she could be up against and still wanted to be difficult till she had no other choice. Her written character arch was terrible and why most people didn’t care for her as a character. Her name was Dani and not Ellie and she reminds me a lot of Abby from the TLOU part II.

its not overhype thats the problem when the game is 50% amogus simulator, 40% repetitive, mundane combat against the same enemy type reskinned over the course of the game with the worst and most brain dead dodging/combat system in existence + cheap jumpscare/QTE enemies being spammed in chests and places you have no control over..

The game does tell you where to go but you still have to figure out the key yourself. Nearly every ladder, vent, or door marked "maintenance", ""storage", or "utility" is 9/10 a side loop area. Main paths are usually lit up and present a bit of dialogue.

    • @gamemacatron7512
      @gamemacatron7512 ปีที่แล้ว

I think I can narrow down the games problems in terms of gameplay
      1. The prison doesn’t feel open at all, there’s no backtracking and you always feel like your being forced down one path, Mabye they could’ve added alternate pathways to achieve objectives which could’ve resulted in different outcomes or endings which perhaps could’ve added to the fear element since you don’t know if your choices could lead you to your salvation or doom and maybe added some replay value
      2. Not enough enemy variety in terms of boss battles, they re-used the same mini boss like four times, also there’s no variation in terms of regular enemies unlike in dead space where even necromorphs like the slasher have variations, sure there’s the tentacles that cause the bio phage to evolve but it feels severely underdeveloped which is a shame cause it has such great potential
      3. The combat feels too action based and gets repetitive fast, you just keep shooting and hitting your enemies until they die, in dead space you specifically had to be strategic with how you fight every type of necromorph and how you dismember their limbs, perhaps in the case of the bio phage the only way to kill them is if their tentacles come out and depending on what type of bio phage your fighting they only come out when you attack a certain part of their body meaning you can’t use the same strategy for every single one
      4. As stated before there should have been less action and more quiet moments and stealth, in deadspace you could sometimes go six minutes without facing a necromorph which adds to fear cause you never know when one’s gonna show up so there should have been more of that here, also the bio phage don’t seem that smart unlike the necromorphs who will sometimes runaway to try and ambush you later so your always on edge, but Mabye in this game the bio phage didn’t have to be the only type of enemy, maybe you could’ve encountered hostile prison guards or other prisoners who are trying to survive and you can choose whether to fight or hide from them or the bio phage by crafting other items besides weapons like bombs or smoke bombs or noise making gadgets or maybe you can get some kind of hacking tool to remotely mess with the power or doors or maybe you can just shoot the lights to blind them or distract them by grabbing random projectiles which allows you to use your environment to your advantage to decide whether or not you actually want to fight, it’s a shame there wasn’t more creative gameplay like this here since other games that have come out before have done stuff like this
      4. I feel like there’s too many cutscenes and their too long, in the original dead space there were very few moments that took control away from the player so you actually felt more immersed, this also applies to the death screens that have this weird cut in between you getting hit and then you dying so you don’t actually feel like it’s part of the same scene, plus their too repetitive and a lot of the combat and enemy attack animations are repetitive too, especially the stationary enemies and those tiny infectors
      5. This last one might sound stupid but I feel like there should have been some mini games like in the first dead space, maybe somewhere you could’ve found a shooting range meant for the prison guards so you can practice your aim and a Rec room or basketball court for the prisoners where you can practice with the force grip all of this would’ve fleshed out the prison more, I imagine it would’ve been both terrifying or funny even if a bio phage suddenly attacks you while your doing these activities
Overall I feel like this game should have gotten a year or two longer in development

I wonder if the disconnect of what you are being told about Jacob, and what we see might be part of the the bio-phage affecting him. Like how the canister he grabbed flashed as looking like a vail for a moment, and so there is the possibility that he is acting an events are actually happening vary much differently than we think.

It is not a bad game for sure but I feel like many improvement could be made to this game. The obvious two being:
    1. The game punish you for making guns because 1)you have limited amount of money so you can't upgrade everything and 2) each gun has its own ammunition so with the limited inventory space it just doesn't work
    2. The switching between guns is just too slow, especially in the middle of a boss fight it felt tedious
Other issues such as not enough boss fight, enemies feel repetitive etc, not a fan of the glove concept either
