As humanity overpopulated on Earth because it was fun, resources the planet could offer became more and more scarce over time which resulted in outbreaks of conflicts all over the surface of the world. The larger countries eventually got involved to take these materials which sparked larger and larger issues for everyone as time passed. Eventually it became quite evident that humanity was not going to get this population issue under control and as such, they turned towards the stars hoping to find a new world. When they looked out, they saw potentially an earth like planet called Tanis. Seeing this as their only hope rather than just taking resources from the solar system which seems a little dumb, they built an arc of sorts to head towards Tanis and with it, put 60,000 people on board. However, when the next rotation comes out of hypersleep, they find there are monsters on board hunting them. Who are these monsters and why are they here? Lets discuss that in todays episode!

No Seriously, If Earth is running low on resources, why did we not just start mining Mars or the Moon?: 00:00
Guess the producers of this movie didn't FACTOR in some nerd on the internet asking this!: 1:41
Like you're gonna sit there and tell me, They could build a ship to get to Tanis but not colonize our own solar system first? Bruh what: 02:49
Like did we even try to land on Mars first? There are so many useable resources in our backyard why would we go to another continent?!: 17:37
No, Now I am upset because I only just connected this now rather than in the video. Crap in a hat-Thanks for watching!: 35:47

Fun fact: this is one of the only sci-fi movies that actually has a real reason why the ship is seemingly always wet inside. It's in an ocean.

    • @Vometbomb
      @Vometbomb ปีที่แล้ว +240

There is a widely utilized concept in science fiction that ships need to create oxygen and to do so would likely require a lot of life support machinery, entire parts of the ship are dedicated to these machines. Theres a likelihood that the oxygen produced and resulting condensation would create high levels of moisture. So, lots of hot machines radiating heat are converting c02 into lots of wet, hot, air and that gets us the sweating crew mates and dripping environments we often see.
Plus, liquid hydrogen is the “fuel of the future” do to its ability to exist as a liquid within a vacuum.

@@Vometbomb That doesn't make any sense. We have to generate oxygen and scrub the waste even now, in existing spacecraft, as well as keep the environment moisture free, cuz moisture corrodes, rusts, and can cause electrical shorts. There's no logical reason at all to have wet, drippy, humid spaceships, cuz it'd be hazardous as fuck and actively dangerous to anyone's survival.

This movie deserves so much more praise than it gets. The characters in the movie almost never make any dumb decisions, a lot of the issues that impede their survival make sense and feel genuinely daunting, and their solutions to said problems are usually extremely clever or take clear and obvious tolls on them. The fact that the movie’s creators went through the trouble of conceptualizing emergency hand-cranking power generators included with every piece of technology on the ship shows me that a TON of thought was put into the overall production and conception of this film’s premise. One of my favorite horror movies of all time, and an absolutely brilliant spin on the Cosmic Horror subgenre.

Still it has a artist licence all over it, considering how easy was for single guy to screw the whole ship to begin with.
No dead man switch controls. No multi-user locks. No passwords. No redundancy modules. And what baffle's me most, no automated, fully mechanical (no electronics, in case of failure) release depending on long term outside readings.
But then again, there would be no movie if the quajillion dollar ship had all the neccesary and logical common parts.

Bro, you definitely should read the script for Pandorum. It went into detail about the ship having moss growing on it's walls, the Hunters (which is what they're called in the script) having a pretty complex society and engaging in "Satanic dances" while they killed and ate their prey, and more that really shows just how little was able to be brought to the film. Even so, it's got a place in my heart as one of the best sci-fi movies of the 2000s.

To clarify that segment, the "Gallo" roaming around isn't actually real, its his real consciousness/personality in "Payton's" mind. Notice how Payton can still hear him after muting him?
Basically after Gallo went insane he played God with the creatures and newly released colonists. Over time he got bored and decided to hypersleep until the next batch of crew. He, now as the older Gallo who now looks like Dennis Quaid, then slept inside Payton's pod (he presumably killed him before, or woke him up during his God phase).
He then woke up with Bower and with amnesia due to hypersleep, and because he was in Payton's pod he assumed he was the real Payton. The Gallo he talks to is his younger inner self trying to take back his mind from his amnesiac self. After merging he is no longer amnesiac but the complete Gallo from before, its why he was so composed, not hesitating to kill the chef.

To make things really short and simple, they lost a big war against the Nords, and most were driven underground. The last of them were basically forced to take a deal with The Dwemer, just to survive, BUT, there was a HUGE catch, they had to eat this fungus, that turned them blind! After THAT, they were enslaved by the Dwemer! Over time, they slowly de-evolved in to the Falmer we know today. I know I skipped over a lot, but, the basics are there. These creatures just reminded me of the Falmer.

The 800 extra years isn't that the time frame of the trip was wrong, but that the captain "freed" a few of them on the ship while going back to sleep multiple times due to his mental state.
