      Curious, how many new members does someone typically get to join LDS while on their mission? Does the church have a quota or is it more like "just do you best".

    • @tannerdavisr
      @tannerdavisr 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@rexx9496There's not really a "quota" per se set by the Church leadership it's more based on goals. You set monthly/weekly/daily goals for different "key indicators" (baptisms, newly baptized members attending church, # of people you are teaching, # of new people you found, etc.) at varying levels starting from companionship, district, zone, mission, etc. You then make plans for achieving those goals. The idea of "quotas" probably stems from how intense your mission president is about trying to help you meet the goals.
      Some people are lucky to find one person who chooses to be baptized in their whole two years of service, others can find someone every week. Depends a whole lot on the country and culture of the people.
      Then there's always the struggle of helping new converts continue learning about Jesus Christ without the missionaries so they can become active, faithful, self sustaining members after baptism.
      Hope this gives you a bit of a glimpse into what being a missionary is like.

    It’s sad that the culture does not have more of the type of “I don’t care” girl when asked this question. I thought the purpose of serving was to serve God and be a representative of Jesus Christ, not get bonus attraction points with impressionable young women.
    Can we also stop the tradition of the big reveal of where we are serving? I’m those kids serving in Boise ID would appreciate it.

    • @eddardstark6554
      @eddardstark6554 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree with the first part of your question. It doesn’t matter where a missionary serves. They should all be equally “attractive” so long as they serve with dedication and since that’s where God wants them to go. But I disagree about revealing where someone is going to live and serve God for 2 years. It’s a big deal and life changing commitment. If someone wants to share that with themselves or close family, fine. But if you want many family members and friends there with a little party, that’s fine too. I did that and it was great to have the support. It was also fun to see where my friends went when they opened their Callings because I got to reunite with old friends from high school. I have a friend who actually met his wife at a mutual missionary calling opening and they kicked it off that night during the little get-together food party that the parents threw while their daughter’s friends were all there supporting her opening. They are good events.

      @poppys34 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@eddardstark6554 brother, I respect what you are saying and get the perspective. Don’t you get the feeling though that those revealing parties are way too much about the place and not focused on the work?
      I did not serve so I have a different perspective. I have been to those where missionaries were called to Rexburg Idaho and no one says it, but you can FEEL IN THE ROOM that it is deflated as opposed to the cheering for French speaking Paris France. This again, makes the event feel like it is about the missionary and not about the Savior.
      Thank you so much for your respectful and thoughtful reply, even if we don’t completely agree!

      @@poppys34 I respect that insight on your perspective. To be honest, I do understand how some can be awkward. I’ve seen videos posted on Facebook of people opening their calls to places they said just minutes before where they didn’t want to go and end up going just there. I guess I had the lucky privilege or “blessing” or whatever you want to call it of being around friends who never minded where they or their friends went. 3 of my close friends went Spanish speaking in foreign countries, while 4 others went stateside, one in Africa, one in Australia and 2 in Europe. As for those who served stateside I don’t remember a single weird moment in the reveal. We had a lot of friends go and many guess stateside, so it was fun to see who was closest. I do understand how those parties seem to be more focused around the missionary rather than the Savior, and maybe emphasis should be placed more on the Savior, but I think as long as there is an opening prayer and no bitterness to the place of calling, then they’re okay.
      Again, I just see nothing wrong with friends and family going to an opening reveal to support said missionary in their service TO the Savior. That’s the point. They’re just trying to be supportive of that person’s decision to serve Him and I think that’s enough. But again, I know and have heard of many who just open their calls as soon as it comes, tell nobody, and get ready to serve and that’s fine! They’re stronger people than I am. I guess being a young, immature, recently graduated high schooler, I just wanted that support. I wasn’t mature enough to put my full trust in the Lord yet. I didn’t want to feel alone and was selfish and wanted friends and family around me. Again, not that that’s necessarily a bad thing if one desires it, as long as those reveals are more Jesus-centric.

      I had a reveal party only with family present. I served Spanish speaking in the California Sacramento mission and my family wasn’t deflated. We were more shocked really because we all thought I’d probably serve in a Tagalog serving mission since I spoke it already but nope. I was also more deflated than them because I wanted to go out of the country but I ended up loving where I went and served.
