    Maisky is a fantatic cellist. I heard him live a few times around 1980. He is phenominal. I am always an enormous fan of Maisky. He has such warmth as well as amazing technique.

    i love how he jumps up almost before the last note is over. i think there needs to be a word even awesomer than the word "awesome," just to describe this performance

    This is one of those masterpieces that, if it ever had wide exposure, would lure lots of young people into the rich world of "classical" music.

    Got to be the best finish of a classical music performance I've ever seen haha. Love him, he is a truley FANTASTIC musician...if anyone else would have moved that much while playing you would think...dickhead...but it just works for Maisky, because you KNOW he is sincere and a geniuine musician. Feeling every note.

    My favorite part about this specific performance is the hard mallet the timpani uses. It adds something extra violent and sinister that is missed by most other performances, also the way he shoots from his chair at the end is alpha as fuck

    I like Han-Na Chang's rendition a lot, but I think this one is much more dramatic, which I like very much. I also very much like the contrast between the warmth of his playing and the almost draconic coldness of this piece of music itself.

    I am guessing the timpani Ebs and Bbs in the last movement of that cello concerto represent Shostakovich dealing with the siege of Stalingrad in World War II - do they depict the "cannon shots" related to the siege?

    • @WilliamWendtxyz
      @WilliamWendtxyz 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He may be a good musician but he is not just expressive, but this is over the top in my opinion. I would rather hear Starker, Piatokorsky, or even my brother perform. I know that today's performers are mostly over the top as this seems to be required today to get any attention Wmwendt

    • @bertcarter6176
      @bertcarter6176 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It would have been wonderful to have had the performances of Stalker and Piatokorsky forever; however, that was not to be. Now those of us who wish to enjoy contemporary performances of these works will have to adjust our personal preferences and deal with the artists as they present themselves. While I enjoy recorded performances of music I love, it is in the concert environment that I receive the greatest enjoyment. For me, there is nothing like a live performance. Something special happens when the great artist communicates with the listener in the concert setting. One of the great things about TH-cam is the fact that one has the ability to see and hear the "live" concert experience without actually being there. On this particular evening, I don't think I would have been as bothered as you obviously were by outward dress or extraneous movements. Nevertheless, to each his own.

    For example at 4:02, you can clearly see his is struggling immensely as his bow grip is sloppy and therefore he must use this to get more weight. Obviously, shostakovich wrote this for a UBER proficient cellist (rostrocoughcough...)
