    Honestly those of you going crazy here about her technique can be quiet. I know her fingers arent curved and such, but that is a tip to help you keep in tune, and shes perfectly in tune the whole time. she has great intonation, and if she is at the point where she can play this at tempo and in tune with great musicality, she doesnt have to worry about those technique things for one sonata.

    • @MiltRodgers

      Yea, she has bad technique by some standard....she gets the job done and quite nicely.

      Agreed! Once you're a soloist your technique doesn't matter anymore... if you sell out concert halls with your tone there's not much the rest of us can say!

    Everyone commenting about her bad technique needs to close their eyes and listen. She is amazing. Musicality always beats technique. I believe that her take on the first movement is refreshing and individual.

    • @antonycooke6402
      @antonycooke6402 5 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      What is technique anyway? It's about what serves the sound a player is trying to make. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with Gabetta's technique; it works perfectly. It is only a matter of whether you like what she is communicating. While I might prefer other performances (and I do) I cannot fault the solidness of what is being presented here. Those who do ought to put themselves in a similar high pressure performance situation and see just how well they hold up; that question would be clearly answered.

    Depuis *mars 2013, chaque fois* que je reviens sur cette vidéo, mon admiration pour Mme Gabetta n'a d'égale que celle envers ces concertos : cette richesse d'inspiration dans l'écriture de D. Chostakovitch - que ce soit dans (tous) ses concertos, ses merveilleux quatuors ou ses symphonies) laisse stupéfait.
    Quel régal d'être sensible à l'esthétique particulière de cette musique : elle *nourrit l'âme* comme le disait Gandhi... ☺

    As someone who's really interested on composition, I must say that this piece is beautifully crafted. The orchestration is phenomenal, and the melodic/harmonic/rhythmic themes are so beautiful and interesting. And the way Shostakovich pieces them together is just so creative. I must say I do like his second cello concerto more but still I absolutely love this one and both of his cello concertos are my favorite ever.

    I just picked up the sheet music for this.... I've been playing cello for almost 19 years having covered some of the more difficult repertoire put out by the likes of even Apocalyptica and 2Cellos.... And having read/played through the first movement for the first time just now, I feel that even 40 hours a day and playing it slowly so I can play it quickly may not even be enough.... and may even have to practice 80 hours a day just to get it slowly period
    Wish me luck people while I journey on this most perilous and dangerous adventure for any cellist to take on!

      I also thought the first movement was rather slow at first, but after listening to the whole recording several times i think the tempo is just right, it fits with the rest of the concerto perfectly and succeeds in conveying melancholic yet energetic nature of the whole piece. Also, she plays last movement even faster then misha mayskiy :D

    • @julianchen285
      @julianchen285 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@prowii52 as a cellist, I have to agree. The emotion in the 1st movement, while dramatic is not what I would consider to be Shostakovich like. She also uses legato in places that shouldn't, causing the music to drag even more. and she bounces the bow when others do not. Shostakovich is a great composer, and she is a great cellist.

      It is true, that the 8th string quartet's motifs and the first movement's motifs are the same, that's because he wrote it as a suicide letter, or a requiem, and he is thinking about his life's works and how he ended up there.

    I've listened also with Alisa Wallerstein at the Proms in RAH. Quite different but I love both performances: each on her own technic and style.

    I was surprised at the slow tempo and heaviness of the first movement.

    This was sublime. Blew my mind. And the camera editing was incredible. Why was there not a roar from the crowd? The audience must all be full of San Diegans.

    El de la trompa se ha puesto literalmente y al final ha acabado respirando donde no debía. Que shostakovich más romántico le ha salido!

    I think she's excellent. I like the video, which focuses mostly on her. I not like the way she plays this wonderful piece, but also how she looks. Strong arms!

    Through her the cello gets to sing as it wants to sing! That is what I am hearing/seeing.
