Fucking fire at the end. I thought he was gonna break the thing! Bravo!!
No one performs Shostakovich with such passion as he does.Straight from the heart.Very moving.
"Straight from the heart" has little significance when the piece gets slaughtered the way he does this one.
Because it sounds good.
The $h!1storm starts at 4:41.
Best comment 🤣
@ThereIsNoArbiter ....Dont you ever get use to hearing the exact same thing? Almost every performance of the concerto sounds exactly the same. Dont you get sick of that? this is different and its very good....This whole interpretation belongs to him and not to the Slava copycats.
Sorry dude- a person who craps up a piece like this will never be looked at as a standard- Maisky should have spent more time playing the notes cleanly and accurately. Without those, the standard bearers of this piece belong to others besides him.
This is incredibly difficult to play...
thank you for posting this extraordinary performance. peace
Recently I've attended to some bad concerts of Maisky, so I'm happy to listen for this marvel. Misha is still alive :)
@KRAZY685 Not everyone copies Slava. And the piece was freakin' written for him anyway, so technically his version is the version it should be based on. It is the best version
song begins in 3:40 :D
Emocionante.
holy crap!!!
@ThereIsNoArbiter I mean, have you heard the Shafran/Shostakovich recording of the cello sonata mvmt 2? It's got the composer playing in it, so it must be the definitive version, right?
I'd like to hear anyone claim that that recording is the definitive performance of that movement. It's without a doubt, a really interesting interpretation, but it is NOT the "best" version.
Besides, "best" is also a pretty ridiculous term to throw around when dealing with classical music.
Great suit!
I think I mis-clicked the like button for your comment, I agree though!
shit. everytime i play this piece i wonder why the hell shostacovich actually wrote it so difficult
He did have someone to test the part out with at his side
He wrote it for Rostropovich so it basically had to be difficult lol
Is this for real?
My brother played this concerto. In fact I have a recording of this concerto. I can understand your comment however as this cellist, while very capable, is a complete non conformist when it comes to appropriate dress. His hair is a mess and at the end of this cadenza detracts from the performance and his dress is inappropriate to the occasion. So no matter how good he is, I could not enjoy this performance. Do you know who it is and I assume the whole concerto is on TH-cam. Wmwendt
Performer is Mischa Maiska. Complete performance is on YouYube. For me, dress was not an issue by the time I got to this section. I was too caught up in the music to care.
It is a wonderful piece of music. I just reacted to his demeanor. It is sometimes just best to listen rather than watch and listen. Wmwendt
Wtf, sirsly?
It's so worth it to sorta fake the runs at the end the way he does. Taking it slow enough to clearly articulate every note is a trap - you kill all the momentum you've built up if you let go of the intensity.
@ThereIsNoArbiter @ThereIsNoArbiter Uhhhhh. How many ways can I say "No" ? That is the most flawed and honestly, ridiculously idiotic comment I've ever heard. "It was written for someone, so their version is the definitive version" ? Really?
What would the point be in becoming a professional soloist, if everyone dismissed your performance because apparently, whoever it was written for is the better version?
The dedicatee of a performance usually is looked at as the standard for a piece, and rightfully so especially if such a performer has worked closely with the composer, as Rostropovich did. However, other interpretations are certainly welcome and should at least be considered.
Other interpretations, however, cannot sacrifice fundamentals of the music, such as accuracy and cleanliness, and still be worthy of our respect. Unfortunately, this performance falls under that category.
I honestly didn't like it. Ending was sloppy, didn't know what notes he was playing. Weren't even in tune either. Not what Shostakovich would have liked.
+SasukeChidori555 I agreed. He didn't played rest in the final
Well, once you’re in his shoes than your right to critique is invalid, but yolo you do you
Totally agree, a much more organized and powerful interpretation would be the one by Rostropovich or Weilerstein.
@@benmeitzen4184 But this isnt Slava. I really get tired ofnhearing everyone try to sound like the same mf cellist
@@adamjones7701 Look, I'm perfectly fine with anyone who is not trying to sound like Slava. Some of my favorite interpretations that are VERY different then his are by Mork, Weilerstein, Isserlis, and Ma. My issue with this is that Maisky is literally missing the notes and fumbling over the rapid scales. I love new interpretations, I hate sloppiness.
it'd be nice if he would make himself more presentable
Wow that was embarrassing
Total shit...way too fast and terrible phrasing. Definitely NOT what Shostakovich would have wanted.
pls pls say better nothing
Maisky is a god😒
Yep have to agree with you here.
