when someone speaks: "I love classical music, its so relaxing to hear when i am going to sleep''. I say, ''listen to Shostakovich: Cello Concerto n.1''
@@senortenpiedad8515 if you listen to that you will start feeling depressed, then you will start dancing some strange Klemzer music, and then you will start something like “what an awkward time is the one between birth and death”. That’s shosty and we love it, don’t we?
why are we not talking about how this man is obviously a wizard who became fascinated with the classical music aspect of muggle life and has clearly conquered it?
Bach: My Cello Suites show the beautiness of Baroque! Beethoven: Enjoy the cello theme from my 2nd movement of the Fate Symphony! Tchaikovsky: My Rococo can give you so much fun! Shostakovich: Hey! Take some vodka and cigarettes! Let's go wild!
Response to a question posed earlier : "what instrument is he playing on ?". Tongue in cheek answer : a cello ? More seriously, here is what I found : "In 1973, Maisky won 'the Gaspar Cassadó International Cello Competition' in Florence and made his Carnegie Hall debut with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra conducted by William Steinberg. After the concert, an anonymous fan gave Maisky an instrument made by the eighteenth century Venetian master Domenico Montagnana. Maisky has played that cello ever since."
+Bertrand Jacques He says the cello is a gift but, in recent interviews, he says that he bought the cello at a very "low" price, that is why he consider it as a gift, he also says that he got a loan in order to buy the cello, so after all it was not that cheap.
Whilst a privilege to perform with Misha Maïsky (look at the musicians' faces: there are in awe), it must be hell a accommodate his legato in the First Concerto's first movement which does not allow for many rhythmic liberties.... What a gem ! Thanks for posting !
Idk jack about classical music But I absolutely love the sound of Cellos, found this track somehow and have heard different versions of it, and this performance by Mischa Maisky nails it for me Edit: like the top comment says it sounds "angry", this definitely sounds more intense than the others and has so much more depth to it
Definitely a great composition. Very different compared to older concertos for cello which is good for a change. Excellent playing on both of their behalf, the horn is exceptionally difficult for this piece!
Orchestra deserves a medal for keeping up with him! He gabbles the passage-work so that you can't hear the notes, and put in rits where there aren't any. I don't know why you'd play it like this, except to show you can. Shostakovich would have had a stroke if he'd heard this!
Quite astonishing performance by all. Brilliant soloist and superb conducting and an orchestra really putting in their all. Top marks to the horn soloist - her playing and final whoop was the best I've heard. (although Sarah Willis from the Berlin Phil. has played this with equal intensity and tone).
No. The movement is allegretto, NOT allegro assai. Rostropovich's first recording gets the tempo right. Fournier played it later in his career, which was around Rostropovich's tempo, as well. Allegro assai is just too frantic, glib. Plus, we could do without Maisky's dramatics.
its still allegro type tempo in sonata form, right? since its a character not speed type tempo,it has specificcharachteristics, like drama, suspense, story behind it...The tempo is right ;)
I've seen various comments about how metal is just remotely related to classical music or remotely as complex so i just wanted to share my story. I started off studying classical piano in a conservatory and i always was really courious about the harmonical analysis of the pieces i learned. So i can safely state that some classical compositions have a rather simple harmonic structure whereas some metal songs features a complexity that can even exceed that of a "standard" classical piece. That is due to the fact that modern metal composers have all the rhytmic and harmonical achievements made by jazz and avantgarde at their disposal. Of course not all metal reaches the peaks of the most known classical pieces. But think about the fact that you could narrow down the number of classical composers you listen to regularly to less than 30, and that they lived across 4 centuries. I can assure you that studying classic music everyday makes you come across a considerable amount of mediocre compositions (and also discover beautiful but almost forgotten music).Metal has only had roughly forty years to develop yet the progressive, neoclassical, tecnical death subgenres as well as some of the most well known bands have stood out to prove quite a grade of musical maturity. but thats just my opinion
The thing is, if you are a good composer of classical music, then you are pretty much a god. It may be hard to achieve, but the precious few that produce this ever-lasting music will always, _always_ beat out any other form of "music." Of course, there are plenty of classical composers that create severely disappointing music.
I have to agree with you. However, the performance itself is still quite amazing. Maïsky and the rest of the orchestra make up for the conductor's disappointing show.
The conductor is actually pretty good and doing exactly what is needed. A bit theatrical, yes, but, it is generally known it is extremely difficult to accompany Maisky. Maisky is, like always, playing not as much Shostakovich, as most of all himself. Very good, yes, but, Rostropovich's or Heinrich Schiff's playing is another level.
@Nancy Lee My personal view is that a comparison here is not impossible, as e. g. those two guys' playing is truer to the music of Shostakovich itself than this, and therefore superior. However, it is music, a highly subjective thing, so I'm not saying I'm right and you're wrong.
I listen to this uploading EVERY day since I discovered it some days ago!! I love Mischas style and his version to play Shostakovichs Cello-concerto. It is exactely how it is supposed to be played. Other cellists play it too " nice". I have now also seen Mischa performing with his beautiful and talented daughter!! :D Thanks!!
Thank you so much for posting this Video on youtube..This Performance and music show the miracle of Music..this is just a blessing...Thank you again, thank you...!
***** There are very minor links between heavy metal and classical that causes people to preemptively hold them in the same light. I assume that NWOBHM is largely responsible due to it having mild neoclassical elements but the comparison largely ends there. While formally musically educated people such as Luc Lemay of Gorguts, Ilya Goddessraper of Imperial Triumphant and Ryan McGuire of Ehnahre create metal music, they understand the distinctions that must be made between the writing of their respective brands of metal and that of modern orchestral music in terms of layering, structure, polyphonic complexity and timbre. Metal is not the only dark form of music, yet when classical becomes dark the "it's like heavy metal' stamp gets thrown around.
As someone who is seriously passionate about both genres of music (and proficient on both, viola and electric guitar), I can assure you that this piece has nothing in common with heavy metal except that it requires a high level of technical excellence to play. Beyond that, it's not metal in the slightest, nor is metal like classical music.
Orlando Aponte And I assure you that if you played the cello (Which I do), you could easily see that the effort required to play as hard as this is the same a metal rhythm guitarist would need in more thrashing types, like thrash, progressive, neoclassical, etc.
wow.. this is something ive always thought. but always thought I was wrong and Id get shit on. Im only 15, so my musical journey has still only just begun. I started listening to classical (on my own, my parents loved Bach so id listen to that a lot) after starting the cello and fell in love with it before I fell into the realm of metal. I feel like many metalheads (ill admit sometimes I get a high horse perspective on it aswell) think they are experts because "Metal is classical music and has so many similarities" when in fact, in most cases, does not. Yes many and I mean MANY metal songs can have structural similarities to classical *cough cough Cliff Burton cough*. Metal and classical: similar and both take musical integrity, BUT are not the same thing. also the only composers thrown around in metal circles is Bach and Beethoven, its like all others weren't "metal" enough
Maisky plays this concerto best. Better than Slava even. I've watched everyone play this, Yo Yo, Henrich Scheiff, every single video on youtube. This one is the most well put together versions of this concerto ever. Mischa plays this with the most passion this is better than Dimitry could have imagined it getting.
@andytpnt Shostakovich is using a compositional technique which is named "Divisi" in which he chooses that only the first part of the cello section plays. "Divisi" may also be used to for different section separations!
Exactly he even adds some things that seem to organically in playing the piece, the few glissando are tasty and perfect to me. Even making the tightness and compactness of his playing surpassing Slava's original interpretation, without over bearing the instrument.
when someone speaks: "I love classical music, its so relaxing to hear when i am going to sleep''. I say, ''listen to Shostakovich: Cello Concerto n.1''
not online his Cello concerto :D
you have to hear some of his Quartets after hearing them you can't sleep I promise
Tell em to listen string quartet no. 8
tell them to listen to festive overture

The 4th symphony.
Loved his playing!!! It's amazing!!! And the woman playing the horn,,,, she's incredible!!
Omg after watching this performance, whenever I watch another performance by another cellist i keep thinking "not angry enough". D:
Well the best performance is the one played by Rostropovich himself... the whole concert is dedicated to him (Rostropovich) LOL....
He has the perfect amount of Trauma experience in his life for playing Shostakovich that i can here very easily in his playing :))
YES, EXACTLY MY THOUGHT TOO!! 😂👍👍
Shekus performance is also amazing just check it
Check out Johannes Moser 😄
That horn, pure majesty!
4:24 best part!
Toloa Faraimo That's true!!
Absolutely
Its Sounds like Star Wars in my ears.
How did you know thats right
You're my new friend.
Amazing Maïsky, and brillant Horn !

2:30 look at the conductor.
Strike a pose
😂
And 4:10
OH MY GOD GUYS JUST WHIPPED THE NAE NAE at 2:34
He is not very likeable, perhaps. But his conducting is excellent.
Easily the best version out there. So angry, so perfect.
The best tempo of all performances on TH-cam!
It should be the entire performance.

Shostakovich:lemme get you depression and brrrrrrr

I like what he decides to wear for his concert. Classic.
such a masterpiece! maisky is always playing with such great expression - i love it!!!!!
If you listen to this while on a crowded train or with a super loud train coming by, it is the most frightening thing to experience.
첼로는 당연하고 호른 진짜 잘 분다
저 정도로 잘부는거 처음 들어봄
he really "nailed" it! Shostakovich would have been proud.
pietalpha2 yes, the "wild" maisky plays just great
Haha how the cellist behind Misha looks at him, it's like, "fuck this dude plays awesome".
Whilst a privilege to perform with Misha Maïsky (look at the musicians' faces: there are in awe), it must be hell a accommodate his legato in the First Concerto's first movement which does not allow for many rhythmic liberties.... What a gem ! Thanks for posting !
Shostakovich's style sounds so disruptive but there's an elegance to it that keeps me listening
What a performance!!!
Bravo!!!

5:03 Those are some SWEET conductor moves!
5:03
The best interpretation!!!!! He's a god of cello.
Definitely a great composition. Very different compared to older concertos for cello which is good for a change. Excellent playing on both of their behalf, the horn is exceptionally difficult for this piece!
Definitely the best horn in this concerto that I've ever heard!🥇
Orchestra deserves a medal for keeping up with him! He gabbles the passage-work so that you can't hear the notes, and put in rits where there aren't any. I don't know why you'd play it like this, except to show you can. Shostakovich would have had a stroke if he'd heard this!
I think he would have loved this recording - plus Maisky has better recordings from the 90’s
The first movement's melody reappears in the second movement of Shostakovich's string quartet no. 8
He is fantastic...
4:10 the conductor is vibing
lol
Look at the women (cellist) behind Maisky, just on the left... She didn't play any note in all the concert !
Glider FS
Are you sure?
Check yourself... :p
Glider FS yes I noticed it too
Maybe she is on a silent strike...??? Or too discouraged play next to Maisky??
Lol
Mischa Maisky's amazing cello skills combined with the way his hair sways when he plays makes me green with envy.
god this is so good. can't stop playing it
Quite astonishing performance by all.

This is such a great piece...so epic.
my life gets a little better every time I hear classical music.
It's almost comical how much he stands out ...but he does it deservedly so
KING OF THE CELLO !!!
Mischa Maisky is a best performer of this music ever
Don't forget Rostropovich, he managed to memorize both of the Shostakovich cello concerti in three to four days.
@@peenut169 i know that this is wroten for him...but i like maisky style much more ;)
My cello teacher has just shown this to me, this is awesome !
Maudo labiche u have to heart it played by rostropovich, he composed this for him
He's having so much fun!
1:50 lost my head ...fantastic!
This conductor is all over the place.

Yes, 1st class cello playing and horn. Conductor also good. What is wrong with that women sitting behind him not playing?
This is like a heavy metal song in the classical genre haha. How bad ass is this guy? Sheesh

Didn't know there was such a good orchestra in Saarbrucken. Maisky great.
It is little dry. Production sound is not top notch. But interpretation is superb. Maisky plays as Shostakovich's true son!
Anybody else notice he forgot the notes at a minute or so from the end and just improvised? haha great performance!!
4:25 EPICCCCCC
Meraviglioso Mischa,ma in questa interpretazione c'è anche l'intervento di una meravigliosa cornista..Martina Reitmann..grazie!
