This game is phenomenal is every way. Straight up. This game is the entire package and not many AAA developers are putting out this good if games with this much content at launch.

It's so good. So is the multiplayer. Makes me super excited for halo infinite. I loved halo 5 too honestly. Think it has the best competitive multiplayer in the series. And the ranked multiplayer in gears 5 seems like something I could definitely get into the same way I did with halo 3 and 5.
I loved that Hamilton easter egg! I noticed it my first time through the game! Clever easter egg Coalition! Anyway, I honestly thought the game was overall beautiful, probably the best since Gears 3! The environments were beautiful, the graphics were amazing and the story was heart-pounding at times. My only complaint is that it was only 4 Acts long instead of the usual 5 like other Gears games. But overall, I was very impressed with Gears 5 and can't wait to see what Gears 6 has in store! 9.5/10
This game is basically 3 games in one, tons of stuff really, and it's one of the very few games where you can play everything with a friend, from the main campaign to horde/versus/escape. I'm playing on PC with a friend on xbox too

I also like how you always manage to highlight something no other media outlet has featured before... Such as humor being present in G5 since nobody has even mentioned it (probably because they don't want to anger Gears purists?). Rock, Paper Shotgun never fails to highlight something different about a game, and that's why I am subscribed. Keep up the great work!
Can't wait to play this. I just hope the Coalition brings out an updated version of Gear 2+3 on pc since we never got a chance to experience the original trilogy. I did have my doubts with Gears 4(those DB battles were uninspiring) but watching more footage, it shows that GOW has more tricks up its sleeve.
Yeah, I found the first third of gears 4 very underwhelming, mainly because of the robots. Got way better once enemies got flesh on their bones. And yes, remastered 2 and 3 would be fab.
I think overall it feels like a fairly complete and well thought out game. My only major gripes are that horde mode is a bit arcadey, and *spoilers*.... You keep losing your guns at important parts of the campaign acting as a plot forwarding device (happenes twice).
The "faux open world" segments felt out of place, slowed everything down and weren't a welcome addition as far as I'm concerned. But they weren't too much as to undermine the whole experience. That being said, this trend that ALL games need to have open worlds, side quests, leveling and items (not here yet thankfully except maybe if you consider jack) is unbearable and doesn't always make for better titles.

nah u not wrong this is just the beginning of them using a semi open world. now that they know to add more features in in nd evolve it, i grantee we are going to get more exploration, more side quest, interacting more wit the world, more npc not just in one aera,

Yeah, I hear you on that. It's not that I feel it became a relic, but more than it used to a jewel in the crown - a real event when it arrived - and I just didn't get that vibe from Judgement/4. Admittedly, I didn't get that vibe from this either - I think it's crazy that they showed off Escape at E3 when they were sitting on an amazing campaign. They showed campaign to about ten press outlets a week before release. But I guess it meant the game was a pleasant surprise, which is nice.

it's like you never actually played the game dude. This game is more riddled with bugs and game breaking glitches than it should have after the play test. Gears 5 sure showed me lot of stuff and almost none of it was good.

I over all like the story. The world building and lore and all. But I think I prefer JD as a protagonist. I do love Kate though. I would of preferred more militaristic levels but that’s okay. I like how Kate built a relationship with Marcus and the rest of OG Delta squad. However I feel like the relationship JD built with Kate and Del was un Justly set back by a controversial military situation and a bold move gone wrong. Which I understand why JD retreats because of that situation. But I feel like we spent a lot of time building a relationship with Del that was like Dom to both JD and Kate. But it didn’t get fully fleshed out. Same with JD and Kate that didn’t get fleshed out either. Obviously there is a Generic but heart warming romance trying to build between JD and Kate. But that was primarily in Gears 4 with that relationship being set back, to rebuild in 5. But there was also something with Del to. Is that Platonic or maybe slightly leaning romantic with again a Generic but heart warming love triangle. JD and Kate have a Platonic relationship but it definitely leans to romantic. Or maybe the relationships in this game are to deep or different for that scale. Either way I wanna see more character development and development between characters.

I absolutely hated Gears 4. It was shockingly boring and tedious and I had a hard time putting my finger on just why. I liked the old games a lot. And this looks... really really good. I may very well be Game Passing it. I want to be Linda Hamilton ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Gears 5 has everything a newcomer would want. This game now offers for a wide range of audience to play. With a lot more content and more game modes to play. Along with the campaign and graphics, sure it’s definitely a beautiful game. But it is definitely not better than Gears of War 4. Any competitive player will tel you this. Gears 5 multiplayer has significantly changed for any person to pick up the game and play. I’ll say this, Gears of War is a challenging game. But it’s definitely not as skill based anymore. With aim assist and the increase damage on ARs, with slower and limited movement including wall bouncing. It’s really disappointing. All the reviews I seen so far, are from people who have not experienced the competitive side of GOW.
I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a big competitive player of the Gears series - i just never clicked with it. I'm much more into campaign, co-op and horde - the strength of G5 is that there is enough to these modes to keep me busy.
The problem with Gears isn't exactly Gears fault It's mostly Microsoft's inability of having enough variety and freshness in their lineup So if Gears is their BIG thing it gets unfairly criticized by having to be more than just an excellent Gears game More Gears is good but we have been getting more Gears (and Halo...and Forza etc) for a while now They'll never Wow people by releasing the same franchises over and over again even if it feels different but even at that Sony did it better with God of War
Well, I hope you think I've judged it fairly as a Gears game. As a PC player I don't give a hoot about the Xbox vs PS4 stuff, so not interested in point scoring.

I haven't tried the campaign yet. PVP seems alot harder than previous games. I used to be half decent, but now it seems that I get headshot before having the chance to do anything. And everytime In have tried Horde, the servers crash part way through the match.
I've always sucked at Gears PvP, so can't speak to that. Have been away since it launched, but annoying to hear about Horde problem - is it widespread?
@@rockpapershot I don't think so, maybe just teething problems as it's still early days. Got to wave 20 plus last night, and one of the enemies was glitched under the map, so we could not kill them. And the two games I played today, I was kicked due to a server error.

If you're seriously considering getting a One X, just get the One X or wait until next year to grab the scarlett. The One X is definitely worth the price of admission as games look absolutely stunning with paired with a capable 4K HDR tv or monitor.
@@rockpapershot That must be a default setting for the PC only, because on Gears of War 4 and Gears 5 the screen is cropped on both sides when played in split-screen and I don't believe there's a way to play it vertically, only horizontally.
I’ve been playing all day. I’d say the lack luster playlists are the problem and might even kill the game. You should be able to pick what mode you want and they should have more modes. (Not less than gears 4 ) 😭
Seems like a gory more feature rich version of the the division. I got board of the division 2 really quickly. Anything that might hold me longer in G5?
Depends if you get hooked on multiplayer, really - game isn't a 'service game' like Division and campaign is much shorter (but denser with fun, I'd say). Outside of 'cover shooting' there's no shared DNA.
The Division is a really grindy open world looter shooter rpg. Gears 5 1) doesn't have a loot grind, 2) has only very light rpg mechanics (you only level up the ai companion), 3) is way more story and character focused, with elaborate mo capped cinematic cut scenes, 4) has more enemy variety than The Division, which only has variations on some guy with a gun, 5) is, again unlike The Division, not truly open world, but with openish large levels that allow you to explore a bit or tackle mission objectives in whatever order you might want.
Easily the best Gears game since 3. No question about it. The only downside was that the servers were a bit hit and miss during the first two days but after that, it's been a hell of a time. People who complain really can't see that a 13- year old franchise has to evolve to maintain interest. If they just upgraded the visuals with every new installment I would've dropped out ages ago. Coalition have done a tremendous job here. It seems to me that the Coalition treaded very carefully in order to get the feel of the new Unreal 4 engine and didn't implement that many new features to not upset the community too much. After the rather lukewarm reception of Gears 4, you can see that they've done their homework. I loved the campaign and how it started out balls to the wall and then the massive action set pieces gave way to some character development, exploration and buildup, just to go back to the massive gunfights at the end of act 3 and then the entirety of act 4. It is like they sandwiched the new open world segments between the more action packed levels to balance the gameplay out and to give the players a taste of something they would like to further develop in the future, since Gears 6 is basically a given now. I love that they finally gave Jack a bigger role as the support character he always deserved to be instead of the "Jack rip that door while we fight these monsters so that the levels can feel a bit longer!" bullshit. It is also insane how well implemented Jack is in this game, especially in Horde 4.0. I basically refuse to join a lobby that doesn't have someone playing as Jack, he is the very definition of a support character in the best possible way. Healing teammates, dropping you a trishot in the heat of battle to get you out of a sticky situation, burning up unnecessary gear in the forge for more energy, loading weapons for you, hijacking a boomshot scion in the middle of an enemy swarm and tearing them apart, you get the idea. He is glorious and usually the "real MVP". Escape is lots of fun in a high risk high reward kind of way. Looking forward to the community created levels in it. Multiplayer is tight again and even though it is basically the tried and true hip fire gnasher mayhem, you can balance the rushing players out with the lancer because it does way more damage now, which is a good thing. The visuals speak for themselves, this game looks fucking incredible and is probably the most well optimized game of the year. The physics are once again great with high caliber weaponry tearing through the organic enemies in the most satisfying way. I like how they're creating new executions for the weapons as time goes by. Voice acting has been solid for a long time and I can't really say anything bad about it even if I tried. The animation is excellent. The campaign levels offer a bit of variety compared to the earlier titles. I.E you can collapse pillars so your teammates can get to a higher vantage point and ambush enemies. The environment can also be used as a weapon many times throughout the campaign. I love it. It is the sequel I've been waiting for since Gears of War 3 and I can't wait to see what they come up with next.

Unless I'm going mad, you cant do split screen co-op on Horde/Escape on PC? I've not found the option if it is there.

The campaign was about as good as mass effect andromeda. Meaning uninteresting characters and poor dialogue.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a big competitive player of the Gears series - i just never clicked with it. I'm much more into campaign, co-op and horde - the strength of G5 is that there is enough to these modes to keep me busy.

The problem with Gears isn't exactly Gears fault
It's mostly Microsoft's inability of having enough variety and freshness in their lineup
So if Gears is their BIG thing it gets unfairly criticized by having to be more than just an excellent Gears game
More Gears is good but we have been getting more Gears (and Halo...and Forza etc) for a while now
They'll never Wow people by releasing the same franchises over and over again even if it feels different but even at that Sony did it better with God of War
Well, I hope you think I've judged it fairly as a Gears game. As a PC player I don't give a hoot about the Xbox vs PS4 stuff, so not interested in point scoring.

Plugged my PC into the TV, sat back on the sofa and put my feet up, too. Exactly how this kind of thing is meant to be played. Was a fantastic time.

I haven't tried the campaign yet. PVP seems alot harder than previous games. I used to be half decent, but now it seems that I get headshot before having the chance to do anything. And everytime In have tried Horde, the servers crash part way through the match.
I've always sucked at Gears PvP, so can't speak to that. Have been away since it launched, but annoying to hear about Horde problem - is it widespread?
@@rockpapershot I don't think so, maybe just teething problems as it's still early days. Got to wave 20 plus last night, and one of the enemies was glitched under the map, so we could not kill them. And the two games I played today, I was kicked due to a server error.
What's the control schema for multiple split-screen players on PC? Is it M+K and then a number of controllers?

It's a big step up on Xbox One X - you can play 4k at 60fps, but you won't see difference between a normal Xbox One and the S.
If you're seriously considering getting a One X, just get the One X or wait until next year to grab the scarlett.
The One X is definitely worth the price of admission as games look absolutely stunning with paired with a capable 4K HDR tv or monitor.
It's very well optimized for all Xbox models, but it's the X (and PC, of course) where the game truly shines.

How are you playing split-screen without it being cropped off on the sides?
Didn't do anything special - this was the default on PC. Have the option to play horizontal or vertical, bit nothing more.

That must be a default setting for the PC only, because on Gears of War 4 and Gears 5 the screen is cropped on both sides when played in split-screen and I don't believe there's a way to play it vertically, only horizontally.

I’ve been playing all day. I’d say the lack luster playlists are the problem and might even kill the game. You should be able to pick what mode you want and they should have more modes. (Not less than gears 4 ) 😭

Seems like a gory more feature rich version of the the division. I got board of the division 2 really quickly. Anything that might hold me longer in G5?
Depends if you get hooked on multiplayer, really - game isn't a 'service game' like Division and campaign is much shorter (but denser with fun, I'd say). Outside of 'cover shooting' there's no shared DNA.
The Division is a really grindy open world looter shooter rpg. Gears 5 1) doesn't have a loot grind, 2) has only very light rpg mechanics (you only level up the ai companion), 3) is way more story and character focused, with elaborate mo capped cinematic cut scenes, 4) has more enemy variety than The Division, which only has variations on some guy with a gun, 5) is, again unlike The Division, not truly open world, but with openish large levels that allow you to explore a bit or tackle mission objectives in whatever order you might want.

Easily the best Gears game since 3. No question about it. The only downside was that the servers were a bit hit and miss during the first two days but after that, it's been a hell of a time. People who complain really can't see that a 13- year old franchise has to evolve to maintain interest. If they just upgraded the visuals with every new installment I would've dropped out ages ago. Coalition have done a tremendous job here. It seems to me that the Coalition treaded very carefully in order to get the feel of the new Unreal 4 engine and didn't implement that many new features to not upset the community too much. After the rather lukewarm reception of Gears 4, you can see that they've done their homework.
I loved the campaign and how it started out balls to the wall and then the massive action set pieces gave way to some character development, exploration and buildup, just to go back to the massive gunfights at the end of act 3 and then the entirety of act 4. It is like they sandwiched the new open world segments between the more action packed levels to balance the gameplay out and to give the players a taste of something they would like to further develop in the future, since Gears 6 is basically a given now.
I love that they finally gave Jack a bigger role as the support character he always deserved to be instead of the "Jack rip that door while we fight these monsters so that the levels can feel a bit longer!" bullshit.
It is also insane how well implemented Jack is in this game, especially in Horde 4.0. I basically refuse to join a lobby that doesn't have someone playing as Jack, he is the very definition of a support character in the best possible way. Healing teammates, dropping you a trishot in the heat of battle to get you out of a sticky situation, burning up unnecessary gear in the forge for more energy, loading weapons for you, hijacking a boomshot scion in the middle of an enemy swarm and tearing them apart, you get the idea. He is glorious and usually the "real MVP".
Escape is lots of fun in a high risk high reward kind of way. Looking forward to the community created levels in it. Multiplayer is tight again and even though it is basically the tried and true hip fire gnasher mayhem, you can balance the rushing players out with the lancer because it does way more damage now, which is a good thing. The visuals speak for themselves, this game looks fucking incredible and is probably the most well optimized game of the year. The physics are once again great with high caliber weaponry tearing through the organic enemies in the most satisfying way. I like how they're creating new executions for the weapons as time goes by. Voice acting has been solid for a long time and I can't really say anything bad about it even if I tried. The animation is excellent. The campaign levels offer a bit of variety compared to the earlier titles. I.E you can collapse pillars so your teammates can get to a higher vantage point and ambush enemies. The environment can also be used as a weapon many times throughout the campaign.
I love it. It is the sequel I've been waiting for since Gears of War 3 and I can't wait to see what they come up with next.
