I still remember the win a Dalek competition on the back of the Sugar Puffs box; I was nine-years old at the time and I really did want a life size Dalek (I never did win one). At sixty years of age now I've changed my mind of having a Dalek and I would certainly not pay £32,000 for a bit of fiberglass.
One of the prize Daleks ended up being burnt on a bonfire! One exists in much better condition than this one, owned by a private collector. But yes, that's a heck of a lot of money. And the buyer, I'm convinced, would have gone much higher if I'd carried on bidding!
Before that though I recall a small ad in a newspaper my Mum showed me when I was laid up in bed -something like get a genuine Dalek for the ,at the time, impossibly huge price of ten quid.I think this was in 1965 and I am pretty sure if you shelled out the tenner you would have been sent one of those fabric costumes with a moulded plastic head and not the real dalek you were led to expect. Never mind , I had a clockwork one instead that Christmas.
I remember that ad as well, it was the first Dalek competition I entered and to win a Dalek, you had to think of a good name for one. I did not win a life-size Dalek, but I did win a runner up prize; It was a cut-out Dalek that first needed to be glued to a sheet of cardboard and made up (it stood 10/12 inches high I think).
Please forgive me. I've described Hilary Minster as a lady, when of course he was a male actor! The commentary took so long to get done, that I cannot change it. Hilary was in both Planet Of The Daleks and Genesis Of The Daleks, but is probably best remembered for playing General Von Klinkerhoffen in the hit BBC comedy series 'Allo 'Allo. He passed away back in 1999, after appearing in a string of well-known TV series including (for sci-fi fans) ITV's The Tomorrow People and Timeslip.
Chris, just double checking that you were aware that this Dalek had the two "high" rows of globes at the back...this was evident in four of the movie Daleks & two of the original TV Daleks (All Shawcraft props of course)
Hi Craig, and thanks for your comment. Yes, in fact all the Daleks built by Shawcraft which appear in the two Peter Cushing Dr Who movies have that strange hemisphere misalignment. Shawcraft also built one for the BBC, (used first in 'The Chase' by Terry Nation) using the same 'movie Dalek' moulds, and this became known as Dalek 7, appearing in nearly every BBCTV Dalek story during the Classic series.
My parents bought me an A4-size hardback Dr Who book at Christmas 1973 with lots of info about the history and making of the programme and related features including interviews and features on the main actors and figures - and right at the end a chapter on building your own life-size Dalek. All with plenty of pictures. It included a section chronicling every story in the then 10 years the programme had been running,in chronolgical order: when shown, the number of episodes,a synopsis of the story, probably who appeared in it,etc. It had vanished by the 80s,if not before, but I do wish I still had it now.
@@julianaylor4351 You're right,I should do. I can't remember the exact title but I think it was produced in conjunction with theBBC,and hopefully I've enough info to find it. Thanks!
@@hello4783 This was originally a silver and blue 'soldier' Dalek (many had the plunger). Repainted much later by a new owner. It was never the red Dalek as seen in the films.

Probably a soon-to-be ex-wife if you had actually bought it! 😆

Chris Balcombe loved Tomorrow People when I was a kid
Chris Balcombe is ok
One of my favourite characters in Genesis
Hillary Minster is a bloke.

whoever bought the pinball got a helluva deal. I've seen them sell for over 12 grand.
I'd love to have a few games on one of those.
I have a book on the Daleks from the Sixties with a picture of the movie Daleks on its front cover.

£6 grand Premium, that,s some commision
The Daleks in the film didn't have a sink plunger arm, they had a sort of claw.
Hi Derek. You're quite right. The movie Daleks used a 'metal' claw, but not all of them. Some were fitted with the standard rubber plunger.
These 60s Daleks were really built to survive the test of time, unlike the new series Daleks which are just made completely out of fibre glass
wish I could have been there. Nice film
Who is narrating this? He kind of sounds like a younger Peter Purves.
I'll take that as a great compliment Trev. It's me :-)
It's ironic cause most of these aren't original
"Actress" Hilary Minster...oh dear haha
I know...unforgiveable. It took so long to do the commentary, I couldn't face correcting it!
38 000 a bargain
Pretty dangerous on the back of heel if you over ran it and tried to stop.
Did you have to keep repeating "plus premium" it becomes nauseating.
Marshian ice warrior
Not the original the original had a claw
Only some movie Daleks had the claw. Others had rubber plungers like the TV versions.
Chris Balcombe yeah ive watched both movies and both red daleks have claws
