Doctor Who's AMAZING car drives again!
Third Doctor Who actor Jon Pertwee commissioned this incredible vehicle - the Whomobile - back in 1973. It appeared in two TV stories with Jon, who also used it for personal appearances. Since the 1970s, the car has seldom been seen. But now the engine and electrics have been fixed and the Whomobile is at the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu, Hampshire, UK, by kind permission of the current owner.
NOTE: Now the summer season of daily parades is over, the Whomobile can no longer be publicly viewed at Beaulieu. Further electronic restoration work is being carried out during the winter months.

It is thought trophy-hunters cut off the parts after discovering the 2.5 metre fish - a small toothed sand tiger shark - at Lepe beach late last week. Not at the moment. I think the owner is happy to leave it with the Museum. It gets serviced and improved, plus he's able to take it out for shows etc, whenever he wants.
@ That’s great it’s a stunning and historically important car glad the original monitor is kept safe and I like the new sound effects 💥
Fantastic that he was as sharp as ever right up until his death! What an amazing gift of laughter he gave the world. Imagine if all of the laughter he created throughout his life was recorded and played back....grateful for all of the clips on you tube. Also grateful that he beat the booze and gave so much hope to those affected by that battle.
I couldn't agree more 🙂
I wish this prop was still in its original 1960s condition and colors instead of this boring grey and black paint with an inferior eyeball.
So do I. Particularly hated the Remembrance eyeball.
This was excellent. I was aware that Mike had reconstructed the ex MOMI walk in Dalek but had no idea of it’s provenance. Are you aware of any discussion surrounding the restoration? Specifically if any of its previous incarnations were considered or was it always going back to its renegade livery given the presence of all the original parts. Bet most of its current weight must surely be in paint alone that’s accumulated over the decades. Great mini doc. Absolutely loved it, thanks for sharing 😊
Glad you enjoyed the video. Personally I'd love to see it taken back to it's Genesis days. But too much had been repaired/altered over the years, and we wanted to keep as many original parts in place as possible. So there were no choices discussed at the time of the 'reunion'. It could be taken back to the Peter Davison era look (as the arm boxes had been repaired/enlarged by then), but it would need a new upper band and new slats, plus a new neck and eyestick, plus all the hemi covers would need to come off (some are covering badly damaged original 1960's hemispheres). You're right about the weight. Decades of repairs, layers of paint and the addition of new 'bumper' materials -from rubber to metal etc. - have piled on the pounds! Who knows what the future holds! Thanks for your kind comment.
the chase was in 1965 a year before the troughton era began
Yes indeed Ian. A few others noticed my error too. But it was too late to remake the video. I've put a correction in the description. Thanks for watching 🙂
Oh, a new Barry Humphries video comes on to my home page which I hadn't seen, and in the spirit of Sir Les. Excellent, thanks..............

Lovely to see she continues.

Excellent video. One slight correction - The Chase was a William Hartnell era story. It was the story that saw the departure of Barbara and Ian.
Absolutely right Jeff. I really should have worked from a a script! Sadly my basic video editing didn't allow me an easy fix once another viewer had spotted my error some weeks after I'd posted the video. Glad you enjoyed the rest of it 🙂

@@TheChrisBalcombe I look forward to watching your new videos. With regards the Dalek colur variants, I think that the grey colour scheme from Planet of the Daleks and Genesis. Jon Pertwee lampooned his Dr who by playing a character in the Navy lark called.... The Master. He also lampooned the hydrofoil by have several blown up in the show lol.
A Thoroughly absorbing breakdown of an original 1960s Dalek - thanks so much for the time taken doing this for us curious people! The point that stood out for me was that this 1965 base/skirt section is partially fibreglass, I'd come to believe fibreglass wasn't commonly used at this time in prop-making, but I may be confusing it with vac-forming...? Either way, what's lovely about your examination of this original early Dalek is that it shows how construction methods have changed over the decades - the turret section you showed off looks at first glance modern fibreglass or maybe vac-formed, but once inside you see its true age and that it is solid hardboard! These wouldn't be made like this today. And when you think of the weight of these original materials I wonder what the _weight_ difference is between and original classic series Daleks like this one is, from the modern series' Bronze models... (It would be an interesting video to look at how the building methods and the materials used for Dalek construction evolved over the decades - from the original 1963 model, to the end of the 80s' and beyond into the modern series..) Lovely look at your classic Dalek, thanks so much!
Thank you so much for your kind words David. Shawcraft Models (contractors to the BBC) were using fibreglass a lot in the early 1960s. There's a great video called 'Follow That Dalek' which you can find on TH-cam, and shows their production methods. The middle (gun/plunger) section is also fibreglass, with a wooden base and top. The dome is also fibreglass, with an inner wooden rim. The props were originally fairly light. But over the years, many layers of extra paint, plus repairs and new ways of operating the domes/eyes, meant they became rather heavy. I have a 2005 gold Dalek, again 85% fibreglass, which weighs about the same as the old Sixties prop.
Great video. Did the Dalek operators need the proportions of a jockey to sit inside one comfortably?
@@rjjcms1 Most of the original series operators were indeed well under 6'. That said, I'm six feet two inches, and can operate my Daleks - it's just a very snug fit!

What are some examples of incidences of when The Dalek Operators can be seen.
Great question! Off the top of my head: Planet Of The Daleks: Watch the Dalek bringing Jon P down in the lift to the cell. Genesis Of The Daleks: Watch the scene in the invaded city when one Dalek approaches another to recall it to Davros. There's quite a long list, but I won't bore you!
So the museum has top mechanics that can rebuild a Hillman Imp engine. What took so long fellas? I've got a 16 year old son who could have rebuilt that in a weekend.
Not a rebuild. I gather a lot of things were 'stuck'
As a kid, I watched John Pertwee's Dr Who from behind the sofa because most of the storylines gave me nightmares!
I was behind the cushions (impossible to get behind our sofa!) during the Troughton era. It's a generational thing 🙂
Better looking than the average modern car.
I've seen the real Fools and Horses Reliant 3 wheeler, and the Outspan orange car, driving on the road but never the Whomobile.
Pete farris who built the whomobile was a drinking mate of mine in the 1970's clever bloke
It could have just been futuristic design, but I feel like the wings, especially the way they blend together at the rear, is suggestive of the capes that Pertwee would wear as the Doctor.
I notice how in the 60th Anniversary display Bessie, the 3rd Doctor's first car and the Whomobile are facing away from each other. Sort of like, 'We're NOT speaking to each other!!!!'
My two Daleks were there as peace keepers!

I remember this on Doctor Who in the 70’s. Jon Pertwee was my favourite Doctor. Also The Brigadier. Shame what has happened to the programme now though. Will never watch it again.
Loved it when it returned in 2005. Stayed with it throughout Tennant's first era, then found it over-complicated, and I drifted away. Though I did enjoy "Vincent" with Matt Smith.
I'm familiar with mopar's slant six but this looks like a four set at about a 20° angle ! I think a horizontally opposed air cooled set up would have fit better in the space . (like a VW or Corvair power plant)
Quite a remarkable design.........the Aptera is a copy of this design.........it could do with a revamp of the interior to make it more futuristic.
Hillman imp engine isn't it didn't they rally Hillman imps. Is that why it has aerofoils to keep it on the ground.
Oh yeah, that's the good stuff :) Congratulations on all who have worked to save the old girl.
As a teenager, and Fan of Jon Pertwee's Doctor, I remember my father taking me to a garage showroom to view it, just before it appeared in its debut Dr Who episode. I remember in awe, the beautiful sparkly metallic paint finish on the wings which was silky smooth to the touch. I also remember its little TV monitor screen in the centre console.
That brilliant sparkling paint finish is still smooth to the touch. The small TV set has been removed to make space for a sound effects touch-screen, but it's been safely kept. It's still in the car if you watch the video on Beaulieu's 60th Anniversary display (plugging my own channel again!)

built by Pete Ferries from Nottingham, sadly he passed away a couple of years ago.
Yes indeed. I gather designer Peter Farries was Chairman of the Nottingham Drag and Custom Club when he built the vehicle for Jon. It only took two mouldings, which many said would be impossible.
Had no idea this existed. Tom Baker was my first doctor. Would be great to convert it to electric power. The sound would be authentic and it would be future proofed too. They could easily recreate it in CGI form these days and what a promotional tool it would be.

This goes some way to answering some crucial fan questions, so thank you, Chris! All these years, and *nobody* has ever done this, until now. That said, I would love to see a short feature focusing on how the controls worked on the Daleks - the eyestalk with the working iris, the telescoping sucker arm and the gun. Seeing the painted-over eyeball (with that bloody "pupil"), the manipulator arm so rigid and the "firing" mechanism from the gun inactive are real let-downs, destroying a lot of the illusion that the Daleks were "alive".
I agree Steve. I have a replica 'Genesis' Dalek (currently on display at Beaulieu) which has the 'firing' gun rod, telescopic plunger arm and a proper eye. The Remembrance props were over simplified. And I hate the later dome rotation system of drilling a hole through the top! It led to the outer neck baskets getting pushed further and further up on the few original props still being used, spoiling the look. But still lovely to see them back during Sylvester's tenure.
I remember this! Thanks for posting!
Thank you for watching! It was a treat being the passenger, and great seeing it zooming around again
@@TheChrisBalcombe Must have been great fun! I wonder if this was the inspiration for the Star Wars Land Speeder?
Well done Chris, this was fascinating! Been watching and enjoying Who ever since Episode 1 in 1963, and have always loved the Daleks ;D
The minimal restoration is nice but why stop there? This is an iconic 1 of 1 vehicle that deserves nothing short of a complete every nut and bolt restoration. It is actually somewhat sad to see it in this condition when the potential is far greater than the vision of the current owner. Perhaps one day it will fall into the hands of someone who sees what is possible and does just that.
Further work is planned at Beaulieu, including restoring the extending rear aerials mechanism. They wanted to get it to a stage where it could be driven in the summer weekday parades, but the restoration will continue.
Jesus, he's not even had it a year, give him chance! What's been done on it in such a little time, maybe a bit of appreciation for getting it back in to its current condition wouldn't go amiss instead of expecting miracles. Nut and bolt restorations take years to achieve, and from what I've heard, future plans are to do just that, but it's a show event and you are seeing the early workings, and considering what it was, it's a miracle of great work that was put in to it to get it back in the road again, which deserves all the praise in the world. Be a bit more patient and appreciative of what's been achieved in such a short space of time for a time and space car.
@@JacknVictor I hadn't taken that into consideration. I look forward to watching his progress in the restoration.
