It's not lacking emotion, it's just lacking fender. people who's been listening to songs long time ago when pretty much everybody used fender think that's emotion. it's not, it's the tone and the nostalgia, not emotion. petrucci puts a lot of care into what he plays, and he has just about enough of emotions of gilmour does.
So let me get this straight. You think Hendrix's cover of "All Along the Watchtower" should sound just like Dylan's original? Wow. Good thing you weren't Hendrix; we wouldn't have one of the greatest songs of all time.
The keyboards in this are the closest live performance I've ever heard. If he had Richard's Farfisa Compact Duo and an Echorec, I'm sure it would be dead on!
Have you ever heard about Keith Emerson? Richard Wright? Wakeman? Lord? I mean, I love the wizard Jordan, but in the 70's there was lots of keyboardists playing better than this, and on top of everything they were high on drugs. ps: I don't mean to sound rude, this just my opinion, and I respect yours. cheers.
I am a Floyd fan for the last 40 years and here is not the question are they beter or not, what we should say is if Gilmour or Waters or any floyd listen and watch this, what would they say??? I belived they would be very please to see groups going to this extent and be that good. My rating is a 5 I was very please with it
I am not a keyboardist but I've seen it done before. Keith Emerson playing Bach Tocatta while lying on the floor through a hammond organ. With the instrument on top of him and backwards.
El mejor "cover" de "Any Colour" que yo haya escuchado jamás.Trance trippin' p,al cuerpo......Casi me da más emoción esta canción que la original.Gracias x subirla.
I love reading butt hurt grandpa Pink Floyd fans who are uptight about a newer band covering their favorite band with some flashy playing. Get over it. Dream Theater respects PF, it's not about a competition.
I love how when Petrucci covers a guitar solo, he adds a load of his own style too it, but really emulates, or tries to emulate, the person who played it originally's style :)
They did the whole dark side of the moon album for a live event They do do a lot of Pink Floyd covers though, it's probably because it's one of their main influences?
I absolutely loved the keyboard, virtually every melodic note... Beautiful! The guitar solo, however, not-so-much. It seemed to be drawn-out.. sounding like a jam that went too long.
awesome by adapting to their own sound. if you listen to the DSOTM experience version of Any Colour You Like it's more subdued and spacey than the album version. this one is closer to the album version in style
This shit slaps so fucking hard. That guitar solo especially the part at 3:52 brings tears to my eyes and chills all over my body. This whole jam sesh is just pure orgasmic. One of my favorite Pink Floyd songs too, so underrated imo.
Actually you’re wrong, the drummer is being faithful to nick mason’s live drumming. His live drumming is insanely more intense han his studio drumming. You should listen to the live version of them when they were young and it’s quite similar. Also the live version is fukin insane
Gilmour is great, but not in the same league with Petrucci...and Jordan, you can play from the regular side of the keyboard and we will still love you!
Guitaraficionado I disagree and it doesn’t even need to anyways, its a tribute, don’t you think it would be slightly boring if if it was exactly the same?
There's three types of covers: 1. Played exactly like the record, note-for-note. 2. The band puts their own spin on it, but it sounds like shit. 3. The band puts their own spin on it, and it sounds killer. In some cases, better than the original. Gonna go with 3. here. Jordan definitely ate his Wheaties.
As the lead guitarist has shown, no matter how good you can be, Dave Gilmour is inimitable. Although I enjoyed the song, its just not the same. You cant improvise on Gilmour's lead which is a world away in depth, tone, note sustenances, etc.
I personally think that Petrucci does have Gilmour's feel and emotion; he expresses himself differently to Gilmour in that he uses speed much more to create and relieve tension in his solos. Expression is as subjective as emotion, and to me at least JP has it all =)
I've never seen john enjoy himself like that. It's like he time warped back into an old guitar class he took in h.s. and decided to blow his friends away with how good he'd gotten. Lol
It's a frickin cover! They do it THEIR way...which is the way it should be. If you want to hear it exactly like Floyd, go listen to Floyd. I like them mixing it to their style...
honestly idk how you anyone can say this is emotionless. i thought this did justice to the original. you dont have to look constipated to have emotion in your playing.
I just commented again. I think another problem with metal I have is not just the amount of gain but the fact that it's "distortion" and not fuzz. Fuzz is the only kind of gain I use/like. My opinion is that it allows for a great crunch but without sacrificing the capacity for those nuances and subtleties that make the electric guitar (and blues) so personal, a la the sentiment you shared. Robert Fripp (who basically invented metal) even used fuzz, and I think still does to this day. I miss it.
One of my favourite interpretations of one of my favourite pieces ever --, well, the beginning actually. Rudess has understood everything there is to understand about the song, and when he goes reverse, it's not just a trick, but actually a metaphor of what the sound is about. Petrucci, on the other hand, thinks it's about a cool guy playing cool guitar, and he totally missed the point, srry but it's what it is. This vibrato is so out of place. It's good again when he's supporting Rudess' phrasés, but then it's sh.t again. So strange.
They performed the whole Dark Side of The Moon album in 2005 and released the DVD last year. If you're familiar with BitTorrent you should find the DVD there... it's where I got it from.
The guitar is Petruccis own custom Erbieball/Musicman and it doesnt have that kind of unique sound what fender does, altough its a great guitar and i love it! And so i do love JPs playing!
EXACTLY! I've been saying that exact thing for so long except for the controller part, which is a great analogy. A clean(er) tone conveys so much more. You can go to the other extreme with B.B. King, who adds nothing but a bit of reverb. There's so much character and feel (not feelING) to the playing that he can make one note sound like lightning with a bit of vibrato. There are a few exceptions... like two-handed tapping, which sounds best with tons of gain... you get almost a wah effect.
When thinking about which musician is better, we should think about what those musician should answer to that question. Probably they will say they work hard to be the best musician they can be, but they'll find ridiculous to be compared with any other musician. Always it seems to be kind of competition in which no musician involved should actually participate. Just stop making comparisons and enjoy that we share our lifes with big and extremelly good musicians as DT and many others are.
it should be a rule. if you're going to play Dave Gilmour solos you must have a fender. there's no excuse for butchering his clasic tone with anything but. I don't care how good or fast or clever you are. its NOTHING without tone. too many hours in front of Marshall stacks they're all deaf. Fender has 'something', I don't know what, but they got it.
Its not that he doesnt play it exactly right or sound like Gilmour, its the fact that just sounds like someone playing up and down scales. Its pretty much like the way Tremonti plays. I cant stand it. Its TOO studied and thats the problem.
that is a very racist comment.... Dream Theater in this concert did a true tribute to a band that influences them in many of their songs....and guess what they did a fantastic job with it.....part of all that hate is jealousy...You can't master your instrument as these guys do...They are not american..they are universal....so is their music They are coming to my hometown....can't wait :-P
sure i guess u can say petrucchi can run circles on the guitar around gilmour.. but music is not totally about that.. ESPECIALLY floyd music. im sure gilmour coulda become amazing at running circles on the guitar too if he wanted to.. but he lets the notes breathe.. he also lets the audience digest the music.. hitting 200000 notes doesnt make the song sound nicer.. tho this is a nice version anyway..
Well it's obviosu that this is acover but why do people have to search for the album version of the song? trhey're just paying tribute to pink floyd and better to appreciate cause ı think it could not have been better (excluding pf). I mean think of classical music then, shouldnt orchestras play the compositions of former composers just beacause it wouldn't sound like what they had in their minds back then in 27. century for instance?
I know Richard Wright would love this cause he was a phenomenal keyboard player way ahead of his time with half of the technology that exists now.
that keyboard solo was ethereal
Unbelievable, I have never seen a keyboardist play back
to front from the other side.
Incredible Talent here!

mike portnoy's an awesome drummer, but he really doesn't match the feel of floyd, as it has to have a laid back quality to it.
