+Rick Moran - the whole band nailed it, and they had enough taste not to overplay their instruments. Bravo. If anyone ever needs proof that a guitarist doesn't need to be fast to be great, just refer him/her to Gilmour's solo on Time.

This was a very good performance of a very good piece of music done by players who are the instrumental superiors of the member of Pink Floyd. The exception, of course, is David Gilmour, who is as good (if not more soulful) a guitarist as Petrucci, and a vastly superior vocalist compared to LaBrie.

  • @artysanmobile

I saw Pink Floyd perform this in its entirety with much more of their catalog, rockets and animals flying over my head, surrounded by their 5 channel sound system in 1973 in Hollywood, Florida at the age of 17. It was an unforgettable and formative experience in my musical growth. This is a tribute of which Dream Theater can be proud.

@@Bealikespeas102 astonishing comment as gilmour played most of the bassThe whole Who played bass? debate comes from one article, which was originally published in Musician magazine in August 1992, with excerpts being published in others, such as Rock Compact Disc in September '92. The original was titled Careful With That Axe: David Gilmour Chops Through Pink Floyd's Past to Build a New Future by Matt Resnicoff. In December of that same year, he published Roger and Me: The Other Side of the Pink Floyd Story.
Both of these have often been quoted in these discussions, but out of context. I'm only posting the relevant portions of each interview, one in response to the other, as they were given.
MR: Was Roger an effective bassist back then?
DG: He had developed his own limited, or very simple style. He was never very keen on improving himself as a bass player and half the time I would play bass on the records because I would tend to do it quicker. Right back to those early records; I mean, at least half the bass on all recorded output is me anyway.
MR: This is not a widely acknowledged fact.
DG: Well, I think it's been said, but it's certainly not something we go around advertising. Rog used to come in and say, "Thank you very much" to me once in a while for winning him bass-playing polls.
MR: Did you play the fretless bass on "Hey You"?
DG: Yeah. Hmm. Roger playing fretless bass? Please! (laughs)

An album such as this was made to be played from starrt to end. No pause no skips. It's not a collection of songs, it's one song, a story with chapters connected to each other so heavily, that they shouldn't and can't be torn apart.

Wow. Just stumbled across this. I was shocked. I expected them to constantly overplay and totally disregard the exquisite subtlety Pink Floyd is so gifted with. They Didn't. Wow!! Dark side of the moon is one of the greatest albums out there and I must say this is the first cover that I heard that not only comes close to the original but ots played to perfection. Dream Theater did a great job recreating the atmosphere that Pink Floyd so masterfully created. Without exaggerating and without any fills to ‘break’ the soulfulness of any passage, DM performs the whole album in a very professional and ‘faithful’ way. Great job guys!

    • @Thedustymichaels

It really does take a virtuoso like Petrucci to capture the finesse and nuance of David Gilmour, who's a virtuoso in his own way. I've seen (and tried myself!) so many TH-cam videos of people attempting the Time solo, and it's *never* quite there, and I think most guitar players don't even have the critical perspective to realize how much they suck. I KNOW how much I suck, which is why I'd never embarrass myself by uploading a video of me performing the Time solo, no matter how spot-on I might imagine I am.

    • @ElShogoso
      @ElShogoso 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

It's not embarrassing to upload a cover attempt, as long as you tried your best. I think it actually takes a lot more courage to upload an imperfect attempt at a solo and show what you can do, than it is to just keep playing by yourself and thinking you suck.
      Just my 2 cents.

Alexandre Matos you should find out how the original female vocal solo was made by Claire Torry.
She was invited to sing whatever came into her head, using her voice as a lead instrument. She listened once, then sang it twice. That was all.
She was embarrassed, excused herself for what she thought was quite weak. But the guys from PF sat there, flabbergasted and in awe.
It was simply perfect, beyond what they expected.

A stellar (intentionally implied pun) performance of one of the most amazing Lp's of all time--of any genre. Roger, David, Rick, & Nick; and Clare Torry, Dick Parry, et al, should be pleased with this very professional homage. I've had the good fortune listening to the Floyd three times in concert, albeit sans Waters. Paid $110 in '83 for MoFi's UHQR of this phenomenal work; the initial clocks' ringing blew my right channel tweeter fuse, so I kept a flashlight & spare fuse at hand. What's almost as miraculous as this music is the fact that a rock being dragged through a plastic, squiggly ditch can sound so magical! The band, Alan Parsons, James Guthrie, etc. were ahead of their time.
