My ISX (company day cab) ate a crank at 60K, ceramic fuel pistons went. Cummins installed a new engine and now at 390K and it’s been trouble free. We got a new truck last month, it was offered to me. I like my ‘15 and said I will just keep her. Anyone else turn their head when the arc was struck? Warren, your busier then a one legged man at a ass kicking contest.
Thanks Warren for sharing your knowledge and information about the things you’re working on I had a plant manager that went to manage a large lumber company over there in roseburg Oregon. You’re probably familiar with them
Warren I know I was one that told you about the the tachometer drive kit I didn’t know if it was still available but I guess it was you got one it’s been 20 years since I’ve replaced a 8430 engine
Hell, CPS has had my truck 5-weeks now. Three of those weeks was spent diagnosing and the past two weeks searching for a new head for my non-egr DDEC-4 Series 60. Supposedly it shipped yesterday Friday May 21st and should arrive to CPS Mon-Wed of next week. Sadly for me, it was CPS who caused the damage to my limited production engine when another of their shops rebuilt my engine 5-yrs ago, installing the head gasket upside down. After 4-months, they rebuilt it a second time with a damaged cylinder head but didn't tell me and I've been driving it like that for 5-years now. That shop closed its doors in 2019. This past February I had the current shop replace the 19-year old fuel injectors. Immediately after installing the six-pack, the engine had starting problems which it's never had, and blowing white clouds out the exhaust stack for the first 3 seconds after starting but would clear up. Six weeks ago while at a customer location making a delivery, I came out and discovered anti-freeze all over the ground coming from coolant tank overflow. I put it in CPS shop and they've had it ever since. They say the fire deck is pitted and grooved out from the firing rings. They informed me that because of the length of time, they won't make right the damage initiated by their other shop and once they get it back on the road, I'll have to cough up $8k-$10k for the full repair. Just can't win in this hobby. Thank goodness mine didn't hydro-lock or else I'd be out of business. I've spent over $20k having that engine rebuilt top to bottom just to almost lose it because of a stupid mistake they made. These are certified Detroit Diesel facilities and they still screwed up.
I think Cummins were one of the first to make a macanical comman rail diesel. Some of our trucks had these Engines. 8 wheeler Scammall dump trucks. Some also had Rolls Royce Eagle diesel engines.
diagnosis.........bubbles,pressure in the cooling system (air system is normal) its a no brainer blown head gasket or cracked head. Sometimes it will only be when the engine is hot because a crack in the head needs heat to expand and manifest itself. When it wont crank on a good battery its water in the cylinder. dont need 6 hours to figure that out. best thing is rip the head/s off and get them crack tested......look for any other causes. If there is a ridge in the top of cylinder liner its water present during combustion causing a huge pressure spike shoving the piston sideways and potentially failing the head gasket etc. Reminds of the Kenworth dealer at dubbo NSW Australia............had a Kenworth come in with a low power issue. They hooked up the scan tool, test drove, mucked around for 2 days...........all it was in the end was a split hose between the turbo and intercooler. Freakin dumbasses. That truck is a credit to its owner for 900,000 miles ))
I watched a video of a "TH-cam Trucker" that had helped some guy at the truck stop. His engine was hydrolocked cylinders full of coolant. The guy did him a favor and hooked a chain onto the truck to bump start it and get it running.

Hey there Warren. Pretty impressed with that ISX, 900,000 miles and the internals look like an engine with half that many miles. I expected a lot more wear on those bearings and when you said the cross hatch still looked good, I had to rewind and hear that again. Lol. I knew the head gasket let go as soon as the engine pushed back when you turned the key, definitely no mistaking that sound. Always enjoy your thought process when you are working out the problem. I'm glad I'm not the only one who talks to himself sortin things out. Lol You and your wife have a good weekend there buddy!👍👌🤙
My father had an ISX600 (Series 2 NON EGR) in a 65,000kg B-Double and it clocked 2,000,000km no problem, still not using oil, good on fuel and power running on synthetic oil. When cummins mechanic went to do the valve lash at 1.5 million he said it looked like new under the cover and lash barely needed adjustment.
Had the same issue except it was a cracked head and on #1, and fire ring on sleeve was cracked. Hydro locked sitting over night. Thank God, sometimes they do it going 70 mph.
Holy crap, that looks and sounds exactly like my shop in nebraska, except I'm running out of a 60 by 80 half concrete that dad built for him. I convinced him to let me start a truck shop out of it. 3 years later there, is now no room for farm repairs and I need to hire someone too.
And heat yes, pulling mountains with 230,240 oil temp. And at the end of the day, your diesel temp is over 200 degrees, side ferrings covering everything up.
Warren, another air injection possibility is a leaky inter-cooler, I had a truck with a cracked inter-cooler. at idle rpm, no injection, but under load the 20+ psi of boost would blow coolant out the surge tank.
Yes it would build pressure. When my compressor was over pressuring the coolant system I could take the cap off the reservior and mash the go pedal and it'll make coolant go all over. The Truck still built plenty of pressure. it was leaking around the orings on the liner but since you never dropped the pan and pressured the coolant you're just guessing
Are you saying it wasn't the head gasket, if you want I'll give you the owners #, after the rebuild that engine has 200k on it with the same compressor on it. Since everyone on TH-cam is a know it all.
@@westerntruckandtractorrepa1353 I never said I was a know it all. Go re-read my statement apparently reading comprehension isn't a strong point with you
He is waiting for someone that I believe is in a tech school right now. This may or may not affect Warren but there are many businesses around the country right now that are suffering due to not being able to get anyone to come and work for them. The government has been paying higher amounts of unemployment benefits and for longer periods of time. 99% of people that get unemployment tend not to go back to working until the unemployment benefit runs out for them.
I was work on my tractor and it needed anti freeze. As I was pouring it in my dog came to me and all I could think was don't spill it Lu Lu is here. Are you not scared that your dogs might get into it with all the work going on in your shop.
Just finished a head gasket on one of these last week. Got a dual cam torn down right now that cracked a piston due to a bad injector. Peter built is trying to tell my parts department that we can’t buy 1 cylinder pack because there is a shortage of parts and we have to overhauls the engine. The engine is not worn out and was just rebuilt 30k ago by some other shop and the reused the injectors. Not real impressed by that. Piston rings were no spaced right either. Anyway what I am getting at are you having issues with getting Cummins parts as well. The customer found a liner pack in Wyoming somewhere
Check counter boars I have about 20 or so a year that line shim crushes being it’s copper I cut counter boars and then use a stainless shim instead and always fixes the isue
Sure do like to watch you work Warren! Nice to watch someone who actually knows what they are doing on the job! I think a bunch of people in that Washington DC place could take some lessons from you lol. Would love to see you carry that pup around in the pouch, I'm sure it would make my beer come out of my nose from laughing. Great video, and thank you very much!
I had one of those 300 Renault Mack 3 tons that half the head bolts on it were rusted into the heads and snapped. It took days with welding, torch, oil, impact, blood, and sweat to get them all out of the block. They used some paired head bolts between the heads. The top of the engine deck was so heavily corroded I needed to use high temp silicone to fill in all the pitting from rust or the head gasket wouldn't have kept the coolant in it. What a whacked piece of "engineering" those are.
I just bought a Volvo d11 changed the EGR cooler and hydro locked and coolant pressure out of fill resivor and front of head coolant came out at high pressure on both could be the gasket or other thanks
Well you called that one quick and lost 6 hrs. labor. Oh well, it will work out in the end. She came apart pretty easy for all those miles and it's nice to see a truck that's been taken care of. A guy doesn't have to be too bright to realize the problem, when the oil looks like a milk shake. I hope it was only the gasket and not the head too.
I understand why the Peterbuilt dealer told the customer that it could take up to 6hrs to diagnose. Like Warren said; there’s some real asswipes that’ll use one shop to diagnose and a cheaper shop to fix after it’s been diagnosed. The 6hr quote was their attempt to weed out tire kickers. Not taking up for the dealerships but I’ve seen plenty of shady ass customers over my career.
Hi Warren,I really enjoy your videos, just a quick question, what ever happened to the oiler service truck that you were swapping the drive train on a couple of weeks ago, keep up the good work my friend!
I've got one of those duel over head cams, top end is original and bottom end has over 250,000 and it's over a million miles. I need to ease up on gas pedal and start looking for replacement. Or get Warren to drop a newer engine, but it's the sole cheapy kenworth and doesn't make sense.
I have a similar issue. Building pressure and coolant spits out of the pressure release cap. Truck does not over heat and no water in the oil. I tested the air compressor aswell. Could it the EGR?

Check counter boars I have about 20 or so a year that line shim crushes being it’s copper I cut counter boars and then use a stainless shim instead and always fixes the isue
900,000 miles on that truck, wow, he sure takes care of it as you say Warren. Thanks for you videos mate, from Oz.
Can’t beat a truck and trailer. Snowmobile in the winter😎
Oh ya, Friday morning, coffee and Warren, that'll work!
Great video as always ,thanks for sharing Warren
"I pulled till my asshole was sucking buttermilk!" Classic. You're a good guy Warren!
Love how the wife cleaning up were you have been your lucky you made it to kitchen I’ve often been told strip outside 😆
With a blown head gasket do you completely take said engine apart and clean out the bad oil replace gaskets and reassemble??
My ISX is fast approaching 1M. Still runs great but currently have a persistent "boost pressure" code.
Hi Warran I'm from Dunedin NZ keep up the good work 👍
Good video What's opinion of the M11 cummins in a 325 hp tractor?
I just bought a Volvo d11 changed the EGR cooler and hydro locked and coolant pressure out of fill resivor and front of head coolant came out at high pressure on both could be the gasket or other thanks
Hello from Sweden Warren :-)
6 hours to diagnose the problem must have been a Rush peterbilt dealer
Typical RTC.
Hi Warren,I really enjoy your videos, just a quick question, what ever happened to the oiler service truck that you were swapping the drive train on a couple of weeks ago, keep up the good work my friend!
Please make this a 5 episode just like the good old days.
