I like to put the front axle on Jack stands and remove the tires first.Makes it so much easier to work on it.Thanks for posting.

I like the idea of access and visibility but not sure if I’d pull them. I use em to climb on, stand on and push against / push off from for leverage. Lol.

Good work fellas. Here's some info,
    1. The base that you removed is known as the lower valve cover base.
    2. Engine has 26 head bolts.
    3. As far as cutting counter bores Cat recommends when one fails to cut all six. We have had a lot less head gasket issues since doing this.

Ive done a few 3406B. I have the engine turning tool for this engine and the injector cup tool. you can never judge a head by looking at it. if youre doing a head gasket you should always check and deck the head just for safety measures.

I worked on Alco 251C main propulsion diesels in the Navy,16 cylinder 3000 brake hp turbo charged. The head bolt torque was 750 lbs.. They have O rings between the liner lip and the block. If they go bad you have to take it apart head, liner, piston down to the crank journals. Replace the O rings, putting it back together is a real hard job. Did three cylinders in 2.5 days. They run 24/7 for months at a time.

I cant remember 100% whats in the platinum kits but I have had best results changing all the important engine sensors at the time of an overhaul especially in a cat along with the injector/jake harness as well as giving the main engine harness a very good going over and try to talk the customer into replacing the fuel pressure regulating valve as well as all fuel lines on the suction side, its a shame to spend all that money on an inframe and not cover all the bases...also a good time to check out the front crank seal. These are just things i have ran across in my travels. Great video!!!!

turninwrenches yeah we understand a check all that stuffwell Jim's worked on this truck pretty much I'm in the customer just ask us to do an overhaul on it I guess only going to drive the truck about another year or two I'm guessing but on the trucks in you know pretty good mechanical shape there's just a little little things that are wrong you know wrong with it the main thing was it was burning any freeze

I had the fun of helping my father do this process on his C15 550 Cat last year when his head gasket went out at if I remember right around 1.2 million miles. His 2000 379 Pete has been his baby, I believe he's got it pumping out around 750 hp and damn if I even know the torque at the rears. Great video for people to watch and learn with.

i've watched a couple of your newer videos, and went back started watching your older ones now. Your doing well, just be your self and you'll keep getting more subs.. The tear down video is fun to watch, I'm sure Jim likes having your help.Saves alot of time when you have good help, and you get on the job training, it's a win..win for both of you. Do more videos like this when you can, i'll keep working my way throught your older videos until i reach the couple of newer one that i have already watched..have to work on loosing the butt crack though!!!

Hes right with the headbolts on those, I did a head gasket on a C15 in a Pete and my 3/4 matco impact wouldn't do it nor my snap on or my Milwaukee so I resorted to a 1/2 inch snap on breaker bar and 5 ft of exhaust pipe

i drive a diesel and am quite happy about having rebuilt it myself and putting "large parts into it" but then you look at these ACTUALLY big trucks and the injectors are the size of my trucks outer axle shaft, the turbos on my truck are the size of the fuel filter on this thing... i may have more HP and close to the same torque but mine has to work crazy hard to do that while this thing just shrugs... my cummins takes a bit over 4 gallons oil, ill bet this thing is more than double that

    • @TheXcraptasticx
      @TheXcraptasticx 6 ปีที่แล้ว

lots of people run green coolant in the 3406E cause its an older engine and the longer the green stuff stays in the more corrosive it gets. Hands down best heavy hauler engine i think

That was the best gun Snap On ever made... we used to have torque shoot outs with them on rims, hub piloted. See where the torque wrench broke at. Shop had a 525lbs policy on hub piloted and 325 on Dayton. We would run them right on with those guns. I'd peel steel from the steel rims.

Jason Smith I can say the same for Cummins. I just overhauled a 855 big cam 3. Dropped #3 intake valve and beat the shit out of the piston. After teardown and some Scotch-Brite the crank was like new. That would never happen with today’s engines! You would be swinging the engine.

  • @Jeremy-iv9bc

You need a bigger hose for that 3/4 impact. You should be using a 3/4 air hose and 3/8 fittings minimum for a 3/4 impact. Air flow is the most important thing for big guns.

I thought the liner protrusion was supposed to be between 4 and 6 thou on the deck otherwise there will not be enough clamp pressure on the fire ring. Also it is very important to measure at least four places around the cylinder.

Hey big fella . I'm not familiar with this test can you tell Me what this procedure is proving ? I did however hear some noise in the upper Or top end of this 3406E I'm going to guess it has a Gazillion or so mile's on it right ? Anyway if certainly doesn't take itself apart so I guess I'm gonna let you have at it good luck Bro...But I do know that allowing your truck to run on past the oil change interval can create the situation you have before you now...But they have the "Super Upper Kit" with upgraded turbo and ceramic coated intake manifold the kit when installed look's great they have a switch blade turbo that from what I here work's just fantastic meet's or rather exceed's manufacturers everything ..

I’m a trucker and that’s some wrenching reminds me standing in the shop watching and learning. I’m looking to get my own truck don’t think I’ll get a 3406 car bec ya there pricy and to pricy to deal with head gaskets because cylinders are dropping. That means the block is weak.
What do you think about the ACERT I have been considering it because it has a 6 inch crank and twin turbo. Or should I just stick with the ISX

so help me out you fill the rad, leave cap off, it runs gets warm the water being exposed to air boils and splashes out cause there is no cap on surge tank because it cant pressurize which means it will boil, and that means the engine is bad? im lost on this what am i missing

It should slowly rise and boil out not explode out if the rad like it did. The cylinder pressure escaping passed the head gasket is pushing the coolant out

Very good video footage of the work project. Awesome! Thanks. I got a question for Jim.
"For new students attending Diesel Heavy duty Tech classes. What does Jim highly recommend to learn at school?"

I would have bet that three quarter impact would have busted those head bolts free too. Sounded strong with no load on it.

Patrick Clark-Barnes yeah that's the only thing is that three-quarter guys never take it apart but those head bolts are put on there pretty tight their tour down to 350 and they're just stop they rust really bad so and they get carbon buildup on I'm said it's really hard to get them off
