Nathan Murphy is joined on the line by John Giles as he picks a Liverpool team made up with his selection of players from the past and present. @paddypower
The great John Giles. A true football man and a gent. No mention of Ray Kennedy a wonderful left sided midfielder converted from striker. Bob Paisley called him one of his most important players. I liked Steve Nicol and the late great Emlyn Hughes in that they could both play multiple positions in defence and midfield. So many to choose from though.
Johnny Giles is brilliant! I love his assessments of footballs golden era! So intelligent and articulate. Great player and a good manager! These off the ball interviews with Giles are superb!
Difficult task for John but I like his team. Although I would not have Smith at right back. I would choose between Steve Nicol and Phil Neal. But good job John!
Brilliant idea. & No better man than Giles to do it. Please ask John to select a few European clubs. Wish list: 1.Bayern 2. Barca 3. Juve 4. A.C. Milan Thanks Interesting that he only went with only one CMid in Liverpool XI.
Not like Souey they never....Souey is by far and away the best central midfielder ever to play for Liverpool, he was a brilliant leader, captain, influence and force.!!
Much respect for John but how could he overlook Chris Lawler at RB and Gerry Byrne at LB. I would also have found a place for Ian Callaghan on the right side of midfield
GK: Ray Clemence RB: Phil Neal RCB: Virgil Van Dijk LCB: Alan Hansen LB: Andrew Robertson CDM: Graeme Souness RCM: Steven Gerrard LCM: Kenny Dalglish RW: Peter Beardsley/Ray Kennedy ST: Ian Rush LW: John Barnes
Gerard was a terrific player but he wasn't a midfield general. John is spot on. The BBC and Sky Sports would have you believe that Gerard was a midfield playmaker which is rubbish. He was a player who made dramatic important interventions.
@bumdog I saw Whelen in a friendly where he played one touch for 90 mins. left foot, right foot short, long, I don't think he gave the ball away once. Very underrated because of the quality Players around him at the time but a Top class central midfielder. Like Henderson today, did the dirty work that doesn't look pretty but needs doing if you are going to win games.
My Liverpool team grobbelaar rb emlyn hughes cbs hansen van dijk lb Andy Robertson cm souness and gerrard left wing mane right wing salah up front kenny Dalglish and luis suarez
Keegan isn't even top 6 to have played for the club. Kennys is the best, by a million miles, Souness, Gerrard, Hansen, Rush, Hunt, Barnes, Callaghan, Clemence...all better in their roles than Keegan was in his.
@john symons John Giles was a world class midfielder, he had every club in the bag regarding passing the ball, he became a tough nut out of necessity, creative players were targeted in his day, he retaliated first
442, Clem, Neal, Lawro, Hansen, Hughes, Cally, Souness (capt), Gerrard, Barnes, Kenny, Rush........and John is 100% correct about Gerrard not being a midfield general.
@@steffanhoffmann8937 whether he was or not, Steve Nichol was a serial winner as a full back so surely he's getting in over a player who predominantly played as a centre back! Giles knew he couldn't leave out Hansen or Van Dijk so he had to find a place (somehow) for his mate
Oh yeah Jagon, your argument was truly exceptional. And how you responded to that little point shows me you’re a deep thinking and mature individual with whom I would love to form and deep and lasting friendship.
Alonso is a top top world class footballer at the highest calibre in comparison to Graeme Souness who mainly remembered for kicking players back in the 70s & 80s, I mean you British rubbi$$$h going to stop overrating yourselves among the bests? just xabi’s heroics at the Istanbul final if enough on that night to out Souness without mentioning the rest of magnificent legendary CV🤦🏻♂️
Rafi David you say that like GS was along for the ride. 3 European Cups, and was a tough midfielder but is remembered for more than just kicking players. Both are legends.
Kingsean P mate we talking about the qualities here, let’s not keep going in circles ok. Xabi Alonso was good enough to play with likes of Xavi,Iniesta & Sergio Busquets (the greatest midfield trio we ever seen hands down) at the national team in the starting Xl we talking about players at the highest calibre here with legendary legacies at club & international level. You saying GS won 3 European cups? You seriously want to talk about achievements here? Xabi won 2 with two different clubs modern era & the one he won with Liverpool on that famous final regarded the best night in FCL history books which he scored to make it 3-3 btw. How about he won 2 more European trophies with Spain on top of that? What about been a World Cup winner (which is the greatest honour & the ultimate trophy for any footballer) played 5 successful seasons with the greatest English club & then 5 more with the best club ever in Real Madrid then retired with the best German club with Bayern winning trophies for 3 seasons. Sorry mate no comparison whatsoever if all these facts not enough for you then can’t help really. Read carefully & think before you let your ego or the British media influence you. Cheers
Rafi David hey stupid, it’s about the greatest achievements for the CLUB, not what they did internationally or elsewhere. I never said anything negative about Xabi, what he has done in his entire career, especially at the international level, has surpassed GS, not even debatable. When it comes to achievements for Liverpool, Xabi won 4 trophies (1 EC, no League), while Graham won 14 (5 leagues and 3 ECs). I think you are missing the point of assembling the all-time LIVERPOOL team, it’s not overall career CV.
Alonso was brilliant but Souness was without doubt the best central midfielder Liverpool have had over that period of time. Liverpool we’re without w doubt the greatest team in Europe at the time and he was the midfield general. Dismissing him is sheer ignorance.
We should appreciate John whilst he is still here with us a great great player and a great man
Spot on Mike
Michael Mulhall He was a great player in his day. He was also a dirty little bugger.
I think Emlyn Hughes gets in any Liverpool team.
Great to hear John's views.
Love the way Giles breaks down players.....
Geez they’d score a few goals that side - Barnes, Gerard, Keegan, Rush and Dalglish - bloody hell!
Brilliant idea. & No better man than Giles to do it. Please ask John to select a few European clubs. Wish list: 1.Bayern 2. Barca 3. Juve 4. A.C. Milan Thanks
Interesting that he only went with only one CMid in Liverpool XI.
Since Souness ...McMahon, Molby both controlled the midfield in the 80’s
Not like Souey they never....Souey is by far and away the best central midfielder ever to play for Liverpool, he was a brilliant leader, captain, influence and force.!!
Much respect for John but how could he overlook Chris Lawler at RB and Gerry Byrne at LB. I would also have found a place for Ian Callaghan on the right side of midfield
One player that often gets forgotten james milner
Nicol or Neal at RB for me
Please can you list the names at the end- so i can see who everyone was
GK: Ray Clemence
RB: Phil Neal
RCB: Virgil Van Dijk
LCB: Alan Hansen
LB: Andrew Robertson
CDM: Graeme Souness
RCM: Steven Gerrard
LCM: Kenny Dalglish
RW: Peter Beardsley/Ray Kennedy
ST: Ian Rush
LW: John Barnes
Kennedy? Salah?
Gerard was a terrific player but he wasn't a midfield general. John is spot on. The BBC and Sky Sports would have you believe that Gerard was a midfield playmaker which is rubbish. He was a player who made dramatic important interventions.
Ronnie Whelan was the best passer of the ball Liverpool ever had .... John never mentioned him.
@bumdog I saw Whelen in a friendly where he played one touch for 90 mins. left foot, right foot short, long, I don't think he gave the ball away once. Very underrated because of the quality Players around him at the time but a Top class central midfielder. Did you not see Souness play.?? If you did you'd never make that statement.
GK Clemence, RB Neal, LB Hughes, CB VVD, CB Hansen, RM Gerrard, CM Alonso, CM Souness, LB Barnes, CF Dalglish, CF Owen
My Liverpool team grobbelaar rb emlyn hughes cbs hansen van dijk lb Andy Robertson cm souness and gerrard left wing mane right wing salah up front kenny Dalglish and luis suarez
Keegan is probably the best player to have played for Liverpool, but he is rarely acknowledged as such probably because he left the club.
TS May One of the best, but not the best.Everyone knows Kenny Dalglish is the best to have played for Liverpool
No, good player but not the best. Dalglish was, scored goals & set them up like no other player I've ever seen.
Probably because he wasn’t even close to being the best to have played for Liverpool
Keegan isn't even top 6 to have played for the club.
Kennys is the best, by a million miles, Souness, Gerrard, Hansen, Rush, Hunt, Barnes, Callaghan, Clemence...all better in their roles than Keegan was in his.
I don’t think those Leeds lads get the limelight that they deserve YNWA
Surprised no mention of Jimmy Case. Thought he would be Johnny's type of player.
@john symons John Giles was a world class midfielder, he had every club in the bag regarding passing the ball, he became a tough nut out of necessity, creative players were targeted in his day, he retaliated first

Mark Lawrenson
What no crazy horse emlyn Hughes
i wonder if the presenter is called Nathan....
Ray Kennedy any time. Barnes was not a threath in Europe - Kennedy was
No need for the ads
money
No Steve Nichol? Instead pick a centre back as a right back bizzare
Not really!
Tommy Smith was adaptable anywhere!

It’s a bit bizarre how big a fan of Steve Nicol you are but you can’t spell his short little name right!
@@stalkek ooooooh, yeah focus on a missing letter in the spelling of Nuckle, rather than the exceptional argument I've made....morrrron

Grobbelaar, Nicol, Carragher, Hansen, Hughes(cpt), McDermott, Souness, Gerrard, Barnes, Dalglish, Rush
Carragher wasn't even the best centre back in the sides he played in.......greatest ever.......not a prayer.!!
No mcateer or robbie keane
Change ur name 2 on the ball🤣😂☘️
My eleven.... Allison ... Trent .... Hypia ..VVD......Robbo .... Mascharano.... Alonso.... Gerrard.....Suarez....Torres....Salah 🔥🔥, that’s my era anyway
That's why God gave you elbows.
Clemence, Nicol, Hansen, Lawrenson, Hughes, Gerrard, Souness, Molby, Dalglish, Keegan, Barnes. 5 Subs, Nicol, Rush, Whelan, Torres, Suarez
