Roy Keane all day long best midfielder in Premier League history if Roy Keane was English they would have the World Cup won at least twice he won't need Steven Gerrard or Frank Lampard just Paul Scholes Keane and Scholes could play together
The way Giles talk about Charlton makes it seem like he was a selfish player . But from what i have seen from his world cup 66 matches on youtube . Charlton was a lot like in scholes they he would sit deep and mainly control the midfield with his passing . I am surprised Giles never talks about his passing abilities and vision because it was up there with scholes and he could beat players like Gazza . Charlton was really a cross between scholes and Gazza and he was better than both . Englands best player and up there with maradonna , pele messi , cryuff etc. tinyurl.com/v2gz8kv
@@paulmallon9292 Giles only played with Charlton when charlton was a winger . As charlton got older he played as a deep play maker and was very scholes like in his play. Giles had long left man united when charlton was playing as a deep play maker.
@@greengrass811 So he played with him? Interesting. Would training be involved there too? I just need to know because his arrogance on this topic is frankly unbelievable. He needs a good talking to.
Yeah but United were a team rebuilding . Robson played before Beckham , Scholes, Giggs , Cantona and a very short time with Keane . Gazza reckons Robson was the best player he ever played with . Gazza played with scholes, barnes, waddle ,sheare , lineker, brian laudruup etc. Even Giles says himself Robson was as good as Keane but he picked Keane because Robson played in a much inferior team to Keane . Also i am glad Giles picked Bobby Charlton, because most football fans don't realise how good Bobby was . I told my friend today the team that Giles picked and he was shocked that he picked Bobby Charlton.. It seems most people are very ignorant about Charlton . Most football fans think he was an attacking midfielder like Gerrard who would score spectacular goals . But he was so much more than that , he could pass the ball and dictate the game like scholes and he could goes past players like Gazza. Beckenbauer reckoned he was better than Cryuff and Pele . Says he was the best player he ever played against. Jimmy Greaves reckoned he was the best play maker he had ever seen- He quite simply is Man United's greatest ever player.
@@greengrass811 in my opinion Robson was better than Keane, not by much at all; a very small margin. Robson was 10 out of 10, Keane 9 or 9.5. Robson was quicker scored more goals and had slightly better dead ball ability. Saying all of this I loved Keane I have immense admiration for him. He did everything expected of a central midfielder, captain and more. The fact that Robson played in a weaker team should not count against him. If anything at times he was carrying us during the 80's. Taking into consideration of the above is why I would place Robson ahead of Scholes. He scored as much goals as Scholes, perhaps not the deft touch of Scholes but he was a good enough passer to perform that role in the team. I was growing up during the 1980's I knew Robson was our hero and carried the team, during the 90's while marvelling at Keane and being in awe of the teams Ferguson was building and rebuilding, I was able to look back at Robson's career with a much greater knowledge of the game and his subsequent impact on the team. Taking into consideration Gilles age, he was at an age when Robson was at his pomp to observe and appreciate his impact more than I was able to during the 1980's. Everyone says while all time great Charlton was so I would simply go along with what the experts say.
Robson kept getting injuries under ferguson. Keane was much younger and would hardly miss a game. Ferguson placed a lot of importance on players being available as much as possible
@@wannaseesomestuff Robson did get a lot of injuries but that didn't prevent him from having a 13 year career. I would place him ahead of Scholes not Keane, for the reasons I mentioned earlier.
Keane was a great player in some great (United) teams, Robson was a great player in some poor United teams, but when he played you was never out of the game and realised how much he lifted those around him, when Robson was not injured and playing you always had a chance, he could carry the team with him.
Spot on. One of the few knowledgeable enough to know that Dennis Irwin is right footed and better than Gary Neville. I'd have Patrice Evra over Tony Dunne, for more modern attacking options. Bryan Robson over Paul Scholes, but John Giles makes a very convincing case. And probably Van Nistelrooy instead of Dennis Law, but it's marginal. And maybe Martin Buchan!
Would swop Vidic for Mcgrath, Dunne for Robson, Law for Van Nistelrooy. Brilliant analysis from Giles regarding Scholes and the England team, have always thought exactly the same. He was also spot on when comparing Vidic and Ferdinand, always thought Vidic was a far superior defender out of the pair. When you think about the players left out, Cantona, Beckham, Giggs etc I think you could pick 2 Utd teams, and both of them would be as good as any other teams best 11
I would agree with the majority of this team. On the centre back positions, I can see why he chose the 2 he did. I too always rated Vidic above Ferdinand. Yeah Ferdinand was the better on the ball, but in terms of defensive qualities, reading of the game and attitude Vidic was the better player. I always felt too that Vidic improved Ferdinand as a player, Ferdinand as good as he was, did have this tendency to occasionally switch off in big moments, and needed Vidic who was a big character and leader alongside him, to keep him focused. Vidic was the glue that held that Man Utd defence together for me. Stam too was a leader from the back, and as tough as they come. To ask weather he and Vidic could play together is laughable, these 2 would scare the life out of opposition attackers. I can see why he left Giggs out too, yes in terms of longevity Giggs has better careers for United than Ronaldo or Best, but in terms of absolute best for United, Ronaldo and Best where on another level in terms of the talent they had. Only position I’d maybe query a little is Evra at left back, but it’s a close call that one.
Robson = Colossus. Best ive seen, how much to buy him in todays market? £200m. Turned down Juventus to stay loyal. I started supporting United because of Robson, so influential, just the man
You are right, Robson was that good, some of what he said about Bobby Charlton could be ascribed to Robson in that he won the ball back and could do it all on his own. Robson is my original hero really. Robson was that good!
I like his team, SCHMEICHEL, IRWIN, STAM, VIDIC, DUNNE, SCHOLES, KEANE, CHARLTON, RONALDO, BEST and LAW I think it is a phenomenon selection, well balanced and would be strong and could do damage. Mine would be, SCHMEICHEL, WAN BISSAKA, STAM, BUCHAN, IRWIN, BEST, CHARLTON, EDWARDS, GIGGS, CANTONA and VAN NISTELROOY It would look like a four four two when starting but there would be so many dimensions to it that it would be its own beast, my back five would be virtually impregnable, the six ahead of those offers various ferocious threats and which could keep the ball and offer protection and would be impossible to defend against.
don't agree. best law Charlton brilliant though they were didn't win anywhere near as many trophies as the likes of Rooney Ronaldo Giggs etc .ps no way Dunne was a better player than ever.
@@andyhalstead3949 I don't agree with Dunne being better than Evra but neither are my top United fullbacks. Ronaldo and Rooney are both good but I can't see how they did any better. Giggs, Ronaldo and Rooney didn't win more trophies than the better trio of Best, Law and Charlton playing together.
His analysis about Scholes was right.... controlling midfield was somethin England never had with gerrard and lampard, that's no disrespect to them but both started as midfielders but realistically they wer off the cuff attackin midfielders, they couldn't control a midfield. England needed a proper dm to play alongside Scholes and then gerrard or Lampard bein the goalscorer from midfield.... and 4 united he's in my top 3 greatest ever
Why don't you do an all-time Everton team? Giles played against Everton in the 60s when we were one of the biggest clubs in country and had great players (2 league titles: 62-63 & 69-70; and an FA Cup: 66; 2 world cup winners: Alan Ball and Ray Wilson; England's best player of the 1970 World Cup: Brian Labone). Everton always get air brushed from history -- I partly blame the Sky generation who think football began in 1992.
Great selection from Giles in all fairness - would have had Ferdinand, Neville, Robson and Rooney in there myself but United have such a rich history of great players it's impossible for it not to come down to personal preference.
Switch Irwin to LB, Neville in at RB. Swap Vidic with Rio and Scholes for Robson. Rooney instead of Law. I think that’d be a bit more balanced as a team.
@@thealolansurfer really? Dunne as you heard John say was the best full back for ten years. I will give you Ferdinand and possibly Robson but there is no way Law can be out of a greatest Utd team since 1960. His goal ratio was also streets ahead of Rooney.
@@thealolansurfer Rooney for Law.... for God sake do you know how good Law was? European footballer of the year and that was when he was playing ( and up against) Charlton and Best.
In my lifetime: Schmeichel, Neville, Rio, Stam, Irwin, Keane, Scholes, Robson, Giggs, Ronaldo, Rooney Historically: Schmeichel, Neville, Stam, Rio, Irwin, Best, Keane, Charlton, Giggs, Law, Ronaldo It's so difficult as we've had so many great players. Leaving players out like McGrath, Cantona, VDS, Meredith, Edwards, Violet, Foulkes, Stiles, Taylor, Beckham, Stepney, Kanchelskis, RVN, RVP, Pallister, etc is not easy.
from the type of centre halve that J.G. likes, thinking back, a little surprised he didn't go for Paul McGrath (perhaps in place of Staam as he seemed to favor Vidic)
Can't really argue with this selection. Best Law and Charlton had to be in. Cristiano is one of the top 5 players ever. Scholes is my all time favourite player and he was revered by his peers on the continent but for whatever reason his country didn't always grasp what they had and played him in positions that didn't serve the team best. Roy in his prime was a sight to behold. Irwin was Mr consistency who could strike a dead ball wonderfully but in this team Cristiano would be hard to get the ball from but i'd play Dennis at left back just edging Evra out of the team. Stam getting sold ruined a whole summer for me because he was that good so he would make my team. Big Pete is a no brainer so my only changes would be to play Rio instead of Vidic due to Rio's ability to bring the ball out and get an attack going and Neville would get the right back slot but I have a feeling that Wan Bissaka might go on to be special things once he learns to attack better because I have never seen anyone boss left wingers as well as this lad, he is a phenomenon at dispossessing the opposition - time will tell. If I had to name five subs they would be Vidic, Giggs, Rooney, Robson and Van Nistlerooy and if you pushed me for sub a keeper then DDG just edges EVS
We can blame Sven for scholes/gerrard/lampard disorganisation, Sven was smoking a cigar just picking up his pay packet rather than making any big decisions. Would have gone with scholes and gerrard as midfield pair and found a natural left midfielder even if with less ability for balance. Maybe even played lampard as a forward/no.10 not midfield

I always thought he was very anti man utd, good choice. People forget how good Stam was, I think for balance Rio would be better than Vidic, Robbo instead of Keane again balance in the centre Robbo was mainly a leftie. Great team though
I've been thinking about this and. although I never saw him play, Bobby Charlton reckons Duncan Edwards is the best player he ever played with. So replace Vidic with Edwards.

No, I think you are confused or never saw football before the Premier League. Who would you drop Law, Best, Ronaldo? Rooney wasnt as good as those guys. And a sly ageist dig at the great man.
Nostalgia bias at it's worst. Here is indeed the best 11 team you could field from every Utd player...... De Gea - Lack of titles due to playing in a team struggling to make top 5. Had Jones and Smalling in front of him in his prime Valencia and Evra on RB and LB respectively. However I'm fine with people picking Irwin though. CB's - Staam and Vidic Midfield 3 of Carrick, Scholes and Pogba Front three of Ronaldo, Van Nistelrooy and Rooney Going to get flamed for some of these picks, Pogba especially. From a technical standpoint, Pogba is truly gifted and is the epitome of the modern day footballer. I just happen to believe that football is played to a higher standard today. This midfield would be able to pass their way through, with a lot of power and goals up front. Giggs didn't pass well enough to get into this midfield. Keane is massively overrated and does nothing better than anyone of those three in midfield except get red cards and miss critical matches. You could potentially make a case for Cantona, Di Maria is another supreme who had great vision, but lacked strength and didn't enjoy UK, Berbatov was technically brilliant but went missing at times, and not just the odd game, sometimes a month or two. Van Nistelrooy only won 1 league at Utd because the team had too many holes to dominate. That clown Barthez was more interested in playing outfield and trying to bluff offsides, Blanc was about 50, and even guys like Phil Neville, O'shea, and Quinton fortune were starting matches. Ronaldo was like 18 and didn't understand when to pass, and a lot of other players were below their best. Gary Neville made the case that he didn't think RVN was good for the team at the time, probably because he had a team of either OAP's around him or greens. De gea gets in goal because without him we would have been relegation candidates during the Moyes and LVG years. VDS and PS had real defenders in front of them, De Gea basically had a championship partnership in front of him. Will not be talked about in Man Utd's history, because he never played in a successful Man Utd team. Although it's hard to be successful when one defender is too busy scoring own goals and getting wounded, and the other one moved like a 3 legged donkey trying to win the Kentucky Derby. Cheers guys.

Hard to disagree with those selections, think Paul McGrath May give vidic a run for his money and very difficult to leave out Bryan Robson. The trinity had to get in. Those 3 today would be priceless
John Giles I love this guy he can never be beat with the radio I can’t even contradict the words I would share with him
Great conversation and interview.
There really, REALLY, should have been an honourable mention for Edwin van der Sar
Didn't get past the adverts. Talking about helping the community whilst showing Paddy Power on the screen. Lol.
Denis Irwin.....A managers dream
Duncan Edwards was the greatest player to ever to grace Old Traford
Charlton, in his time incomparable.
The programme should start with the front 3, or manage its time better, Johnny hardly got any time to talk about Denis Law.
It is ALMOST like he knows more that you about the subject. Insane arrogance from John Giles there.
Charlton biggest asset was his balance, equal on any foot. He moved like a snake
John Giles Robson was there during
Ferguson; 86-94
Atkinson; 81-86
He played during Ferguson longer at United than Atkinson
Ronaldo, Law and Best. What a front three!
And maybe Martin Buchan!
tgtips Matin Buchan was indeed an accomplished classy central defender of International class who was comfortable with either foot.
Van Nistleroy couldn't wash Denis Law's jock strap!
Have you ever seen Denis Law Play? I doubt it or you would have never made such a ridiculous comment
great footballers both
Would swop Vidic for Mcgrath, Dunne for Robson, Law for Van Nistelrooy.
I started supporting United because of Robson, so influential, just the man
Lyndsey Wood I’d have Bryan Robson in my team all day long maybe at the expense of Scholes, I don’t know. Robson was slightly better than Keane.
I couldn't agree with you more
@@galtongabriel1172 totally agree
You are right, Robson was that good, some of what he said about Bobby Charlton could be ascribed to Robson in that he won the ball back and could do it all on his own. Robson is my original hero really. Robson was that good!
I like his team, SCHMEICHEL, IRWIN, STAM, VIDIC, DUNNE, SCHOLES, KEANE, CHARLTON, RONALDO, BEST and LAW
I think it is a phenomenon selection, well balanced and would be strong and could do damage.
Mine would be, SCHMEICHEL, WAN BISSAKA, STAM, BUCHAN, IRWIN, BEST, CHARLTON, EDWARDS, GIGGS, CANTONA and VAN NISTELROOY
It would look like a four four two when starting but there would be so many dimensions to it that it would be its own beast, my back five would be virtually impregnable, the six ahead of those offers various ferocious threats and which could keep the ball and offer protection and would be impossible to defend against.
don't agree. best law Charlton brilliant though they were didn't win anywhere near as many trophies as the likes of Rooney Ronaldo Giggs etc .ps no way Dunne was a better player than ever.
evra
@@andyhalstead3949 I don't agree with Dunne being better than Evra but neither are my top United fullbacks. Ronaldo and Rooney are both good but I can't see how they did any better. Giggs, Ronaldo and Rooney didn't win more trophies than the better trio of Best, Law and Charlton playing together.
might be an idea to make a list of trophies won
@@andyhalstead3949 yeah you do that it would be good
His analysis about Scholes was right.... controlling midfield was somethin England never had with gerrard and lampard, that's no disrespect to them but both started as midfielders but realistically they wer off the cuff attackin midfielders, they couldn't control a midfield. England needed a proper dm to play alongside Scholes and then gerrard or Lampard bein the goalscorer from midfield.... and 4 united he's in my top 3 greatest ever
Finally someone picking Vidic over Rio....
Dunne was brilliant as was Shay Brennan at right back wonderful players.
Great selection from Giles in all fairness - would have had Ferdinand, Neville, Robson and Rooney in there myself but United have such a rich history of great players it's impossible for it not to come down to personal preference.
So, lay out your team eh? Love to see who you would drop to accommodate those four.
@@thealolansurfer no way can Scholes be left out of a best ever Utd team
Scmeichel Irwin Stam Edwards Buchan,
Scholes Robson Charlton, Ronaldo Law Best
In my lifetime:
Schmeichel, Neville, Rio, Stam, Irwin, Keane, Scholes, Robson, Giggs, Ronaldo, Rooney
Historically:
Schmeichel, Neville, Stam, Rio, Irwin, Best, Keane, Charlton, Giggs, Law, Ronaldo
It's so difficult as we've had so many great players. Leaving players out like McGrath, Cantona, VDS, Meredith, Edwards, Violet, Foulkes, Stiles, Taylor, Beckham, Stepney, Kanchelskis, RVN, RVP, Pallister, etc is not easy.
Good shout.
from the type of centre halve that J.G. likes, thinking back, a little surprised he didn't go for Paul McGrath (perhaps in place of Staam as he seemed to favor Vidic)
So fair Jonny Roy legend
2 Corkonians. Thats about right
Who are ye doin next arsenal? Everton ?
Top 4 clubs only
Kieran Duggan is that actually true because one of them said there doing leeds to
The selections are since 1965 so Everton and Arsenal would probably be in the top 4.
Good ol John

Nostalgia bias at it's worst. Here is indeed the best 11 team you could field from every Utd player......
De Gea - Lack of titles due to playing in a team struggling to make top 5. Had Jones and Smalling in front of him in his prime
Valencia and Evra on RB and LB respectively. However I'm fine with people picking Irwin though.
CB's - Staam and Vidic
Midfield 3 of Carrick, Scholes and Pogba
Front three of Ronaldo, Van Nistelrooy and Rooney
Going to get flamed for some of these picks, Pogba especially.
