Giles was a quality player and would be as well respected today as he was in the 70s. He was part of a fantastic Leeds Utd team who scared everyone. As an Everton fan I saw my first game at Goodison Park where we beat Leeds 3-2. What an introduction to 1st Division football , I was 14.

See you next season hopefully (Leeds fan) i remember the great Everton side in the mid 80s. Sharp, Heath, Gray, Ratcliffe, Southall and Co. Would have won the European Cup in 1986 had it not been for Heysel ban.

@@paulgray7014 Leeds are long overdue to be in the Prem. Cant believe they have been in the Championship so long maybe Peter Ridsdale can account for that one. Hes your Heysel

Growing up in Nth Dublin in the 50s and 60s I knew a lots of Everton supporters . Liverpool hadn’t started
having the phenomenal success of the 70s and 80s as yet so can’t recall knowing many Liverpool supporters then. I would say that Everton support has a lot to do with the many Irish players playing for them in the 50s ,other than Mick Meagan I can’t recall any Irish players in Everton teams throughout the 60s.
As far as I recall Everton’s 1970 league winning side was an all English affair.

More Liverpool fans than Everton fans in Dublin nowadays but that certainly wasn't the case pre 1980s. Liverpool didn't sign an Irish Catholic until 1979.
4:52: John states that Everton fielded six Irish Catholics in their starting eleven for a number of games during the 1950s

@@CR19917 Liverpool are not a sectarian club as far as I'm aware. They may not have signed an Irish born Catholic till '79 but Tommy Smith, Gerry Byrne and Chris Lawlor from their 69s side were alliverlool born and Catholic. BTW, I support Man Utd.

    • @CR19917

@@brianoreilly239 Pool actually were quite a sectarian club in their very early days (late 19th & early 20th century) but obviously that all disappeared with time. This is an interesting read: t.co/wxBEJnYb0z?amp=1
However their monumental success throughout the 1980s coincided with the club signing multiple Irish players and they therefore, from this point, built up a huge support in Ireland.

Sorry, in what world is Ashley Williams even nominated? Laughable, complete respect for his career at Swansea but at Everton, oh my dear, woeful would not be a sufficient word to describe his time there. Abysmal. Genuinely one of the worst players I’ve seen at Everton.

I would say in what world should Seamus Coleman be picked in an all time everton eleven . I am sure everton fans would be baffled by the selection of Coleman by Giles.

Complete irish bias by giles going for seamus coleman . Giles has a great knowledge of the game and is usually a great knowledge of the game but him and dunphy are so biased when it comes to judging Irish players that I just can't take them seriously .
Brian Kerr in fairness who Irelands most educated pundit , doesn't rate Coleman to highly at all .The fact of the matter is that if Colenman is this supposed world class defender that Giles and Dunphy always talk about , then have none of the big clubs gine in for him.
The fact of the matter is that Coleman is a good attacking full back , but defensively he is quite suspect especially for Ireland . The game against Scotland sticks out when he was up against a very green andy robertson and the gulf in class between himself and robertson was huge .
Also he had a nightmare any against Serbia on their home patch when he at fault for both goals . He has never shown his form for Everton in an Ireland shirt ever . In fact I can't think for Ireland where he ever stood out .
Listening to Giles and Dunphy talk about him you would think they were talking about Dennis Irwin when they ever they start singing the praises of Coleman . It really is verbal diarrhea from both.

United bid for Coleman in 2015 but Everton wanted £20m so got Darmian instead. And PSG were interested few yrs ago but he was settled with young family. Love if he moved he would have gotten more credit
