    Thank you so much for that tip about spraying the base color as the first coat as over the tape to keep from bleeding, saved me a lot of headache on a project!!!!!

    I’ve probably watching this 10 times over the last six years, and I keep coming back to Jeff’s videos. They’re top notch.

    Great video. Thanks. I'm new to painting and will be painting Matt over 2 different colours. I don't need to worry about the height difference on the line? There will be more paint on one side right?

    Im going to paint stripes on my car one day but itll be extremely difficult as the lines will be off center and a lot more curves. The car is very round. "Aircooled beetle"

    Thanks for the vid. I'm getting ready to do this tomorrow and I was over thinking it a bit. When you put the tape over the purple, before you hit it with black, does the tape leave any residue that prevents the clear from sticking properly?

    • @lindz151074
      @lindz151074 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      My question too...i did some rookie stripes and for some reason the clear lifted near the edge of the stripe...tape was a bit old and the paint was from Supercheap so who knows?

    Awesome episode mate, makes me feel much more confident about tackling this in the future. Just wondering how you would go about painting even lines around wheel arches? getting an even line going around the curve is very daunting...

    • @HomeBuiltByJeff
      @HomeBuiltByJeff  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is where it gets more difficult. I would probably mask up the whole area and mark the lower line. Then use a compass or similar to follow the bottom line with the point and mark the upper line to keep an even spacing. Then tidy it up before carefully cutting it out.

    Great tips! Did you spray base orange and then clear. Then sand the the clear then put stripes. Then clear over the whole car again?

    • @HomeBuiltByJeff
      @HomeBuiltByJeff  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ..and then sand it again and clear again to get rid of the edges ;) It is all step by step in the car build series.

    Hey Jeff is you want to stop paint bleed shoot a single coat of the base colour of the masked area first to seal the edges, any bleed won't then show

      i always faced bleed problems then stripping and the tip you mentioned to seal it off with the base coat as a seal is absolutely brilliant.

    Do pull the tape after it is sprayed or the next day ?

  • @IntusMortuum

    Do you wait for the paint to dry before removing the tape? OR do you remove it while it is still wet?

    • @HomeBuiltByJeff
      @HomeBuiltByJeff  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Basecoat basically dries pretty much straight away, so by the time you have put the gun down you should be right. But I would leave it maybe 10 mins or so. I wouldn't leave it overnight, as when the paint is fully dry, it tends to chip off little bits.

    Have you ever thought of using a laser light for a perfectly straight line?

    • @HomeBuiltByJeff
      @HomeBuiltByJeff  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is nice in theory, but you still need to be able to line it up correctly in the first place. This method is much much easier.

    Hi you said flo coating ... can you explain a bit more .... how it's done ... what grits you use and how many layers of clear do you use thanks Jeff

    • @HomeBuiltByJeff
      @HomeBuiltByJeff  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I explain it more in the Flow coat episode. Basically all of the top show cars get this done, where once the car is completely painted, it is sanded back again completely flat to get rid of any orange peel or other minor flaws in the paint. Then it is given a final clear coat over the perfectly flat base, so the final layer is the smoothest possible finish.

      Home Built By Jeff hello Jeff.... could you send me a link to your flo coat video ...... could you base coat then use inter coat / binder then go over with clear coat for more depth ? Thanks Jeff great vids

    • @HomeBuiltByJeff
      @HomeBuiltByJeff  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. You really need to paint it properly first. th-cam.com/video/q7nJqncXjq0/w-d-xo.html

      Home Built By Jeff hi Jeff... yes but when you flatted it for flo coating what papers did you use ? Also if you based then used a binder or intercoat could you then go over with 3 coats of clear ? Thanks rich

    How long after painting did you remove the tape? Was the paint still wet?

    • @sweenep86
      @sweenep86 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also do graphics, for polyester basecoats wait till it's fully dry, not just flashed. With enamel based paints unmask while wet or they can skin over and lift

    • @HomeBuiltByJeff
      @HomeBuiltByJeff  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The basecoat is dusted on so it is pretty much dry straight away. I don't wet it up at that stage, so the tape can come straight off.

    I want to get stripes on my 2015 mustang, does it need to be repainted to add the stripes?

    • @HomeBuiltByJeff
      @HomeBuiltByJeff  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to re-clear coat every panel that you put stripes on to do it properly. You can paint just the stripes, but I would never do that, and particularly not on a nice car. If you don't want to clear it all again then just go with vinyl.

    Jeff,
    Thank you for making this video - Very helpful! I have wondered about on a base clear having to mechanically open the surface of the base for the stripes to adhere properly.
    I have a question with regard to when you pulled the tape in the large area (white tape), do you need to worry about the tape leaving any residue? Do you need to wipe with wax and grease remover?
    Thanks!

    • @HomeBuiltByJeff
      @HomeBuiltByJeff  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually painted and cleared the whole car and then rubbed it all back again before masking the stripes. If you mask straight over base coat, you do have issues with residue and tape marks.
      Even doing it the way I do it, which includes a bunch more clearing, you have to make sure you dust on the stripe colour. If you go too wet you can still soften up the tape and have residue issues.
