  • In today's video I talk about some of the reasons why I believe KOTOR still has an active fanbase. These games are OLD, but will still have people (like me) talking about it these days. And that's for good reasons, they are just excellent games.

    I played through the entirety of the game for the first time 2 years ago on my iPhone. The scale, story, and characters absolutely blew me away. I never expected one of greatest experiences in gaming would be had on an iPhone. The game is a work of art that has held the test of time for sure.

      And if you think about it from a long standing fans perspective. Having played it when it came out on the original Xbox. It's amazing.

    21 years later and KOTOR's story still stands strong as beautifully written from beginning to end, i've replayed this game literally dozens of times since i first played it when i was a kid and i still always find myself mixing up my party members, trying to find new dialogue or dialogue that i've forgotten about, seeing what other companions say about your actions, good and bad, mixing up my build, finishing up every quest, and playing around with mods.
    It's just a game that stands the test of time, perhaps the combat system feels a bit dated nowadays but the game still has an undeniable charm as being purely Star Wars, it really does feel like the plot of a movie explored via an RPG, what a beautiful game, the golden years of Star Wars videogames.

    Thank you for this video. I have been a KOTOR fan since the age of 8 and will remain one. Revisiting both games will never get old no matter how many time I play, to me it’s no different than rewatching the OT, even when you know practically every word and story beat you still get sucked in by the atmosphere and world building every time.

    Thankfully EA doesn't have exclusive Star Wars games rights anymore, which is why the KOTOR remake and other games are starting to be worked on, EA pretty much cancelled every project they started, and completely wasted everyone's time. Though yeah, I also don't trust the remake's chances. Would love to see KOTOR 1 and KOTOR 2 videos from you! KOTOR 2 is my favorite game in general.

      Thank you for your nice comment! I probably will continue to make videos about KOTOR in the future, discussing these games is super interesting and it'd be cool if someone out there who's never played these games might pick them up. And it's a real shame EA never properly utilised the SW franchise, SW has so much potential for great games.

      @@timbean8768 Nice to see that you probably will! The best thing to come out of EA was Respawn's work on Fallen Order for sure imo, though 2003-2005 LucasArts before the budget problems was peak for Star Wars games, we had the KOTOR games, Battlefront games, Republic Commando, Empire at War, and Jedi Academy all coming out at around the same time, not to mention the smaller titles that came out around then that are rarely mentioned, I was really young but acquired them as used games later as a kid so that's how I experienced most of them.

    Yep, we are completely starved of actually good SW role playing games. I tried hard to like TOR and I still kinda do to this day, but it didn't really capture the magic of KOTOR 1 and 2 due to being an MMO experience, not a single player RPG experience like it's predecessor. Everything felt...streamlined whereas the KOTOR games felt organic, like living worlds you were moving through.
    Anyway, I agree with most of what you say. If I have to suggest anything to help you grow, it would be to do some more editing because you're like me and talk in roundabouts. I would personally edit out a lot of that.

    • @timbean8768
      @timbean8768  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yeah definitely. SWTOR is decent fun but the level of immersion in the world I felt when first playing KOTOR is something you just can't replicate in an MMO. And thank you for the suggestion, I'll keep it in mind!

    This game is older than me lol, and yet i still loved (almost) everything about it. The most notable part of kotor is def the writing, I absolutely loved kotor 2's ending, and the twist i the first game is by far my favourite plot twist of to time. I wish obsidian had more time to work on the second game.

      KOTOR 2 story goes so hard man, it's lowkey full of philosophy too, the character arcs and the themes touched upon the game are very much deserving of analysis, when I was a kid the story seemed a bit convoluted and difficult to grasp, but now as an adult with an interest in philosophy i'm just continually surprised at the depth of the story and the little intricacies behind it, best of luck with your paper :)

I never got past dantooine because of various dumb kid reasons, but I really liked the game and when i went to walmart once, i was offered to pick out a game to play, so i said i wamted a star wars game. And i came across kotor II and was like "thats not a star wars game" because darth nihilus looked scary haha

    Uh-huh. Gray areas only exist because black and white are well defined. If there was no black, or white, gray would not exist. I've played both Knights of the Old Republic games, and I can't even remember anything about the second game aside from the beginning and the ending. I also never got lost during my playthrough--the art style is that good.

    At this point the only studio I trust with a remake of Kotor is Larian Studios. One thing I fear the most is the fact that I know they will change the combat gameplay, and that is a huge reason I love the game. Not that real time can't be fun, but to me Kotor 1 & 2, as well as, Dragon age had the best combat. Since then not one game I know of has played like it except DOS and BG3 but even those are turn based and is not quite the same.

    • @timbean8768
      @timbean8768  4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Good point! I respect Larian's commitment and attention to detail, but I've never liked their turn-based gameplay. I enjoy the real time with pause of KOTOR and Dragon Age, to me that's the best of both worlds.

    I wish we had a lot more developed in the style and take that the first game had. TSL always felt like a bit of an imposter to the series in my opinion. It never really seemed like it knew whether it wanted to be an RPG or a movie. So you're basically stuck with one good game, which is quite the drought indeed.

    I played KOTOR for the first time in 2013 I think, the game was already 10 years old at the time, so there wasn't any nostalgia attached, and I still considered it to be one of my all time favorites after playing it. It's still a top 10 game for me. I do like some things about the sequel better, it has better writing, improved gameplay and new features, but the first one still takes the edge a little for the following reasons:
    - it was completed, unlike 2
    - I think it has better pacing than 2. The beginning of 2 especially is just too slow and boring
    - every planet and area you visit was more visually appealing and better designed in 1

    Also, I have been always BIG on old RPG style games like Torment, Baulder's Gate (1 & 2), Icewind Dale, etc.. And THIS fit into that easily! (Basically, it was a D&D game set in Star Wars.)
    Plus, I'm "old" & like these old games.
