By far the best filmmaking channel on TH-cam, with high quality content...for those of you interested in filmmaking who've not purchased fulltimefilmaker, what are y'all still waiting for??? You'd be stocked!!!!
I appreciate the fact that you mentioned filters will interfere with stabilization. One note though. You said you'd like to see the 180° shutter rule being usable with hypersmooth but... The whole point of hypersmooth working is that it needs perfectly motion free pictures to be able to align them and smooth out the motion so unless they figure out a way to add digital motion blur we're stuck with either stabilized footage or static 24p at 1/48 shutter speed. I would actually like to see software being able to do that realistically and reliably (kinda like RSMB but better)
This isn't fixable without going to an optical or physical form of stabilization. GoPro uses purely electronic stabilization which shifts the framing, works great so long as the shutter speed is high but once the shutter speed is lower, you'll be able to see the image shifts between frames "baked" into the footage. Anyone who thinks this can be fixed doesn't understand electronic stabilization. GoPro did improve this issue though on the Hero 9 (I never had the Hero 8 so I don't know), now in low light the shutter speed doesn't go below 180 degree shutter angle (opposed to say with the Hero 7 where it would go to a 360 degree shutter angle which magnified the issue). I found that shooting in a higher frame rate like 4K60 and then on say a 24fps timeline, you can add motion estimated motion blur to the clip in Davinci Resolve. The accuracy of the "fake" motion blur will be improved since you are sampling the action at 60fps. And this is not a simple technique like frame blending, it analyzes the motion and objects between frames then blurs it. I've had this ND filter on GoPro issue for years but then I decided to switch to Resolve in 2019 for this one built in feature alone (no need to buy an additional plug in for motion estimated motion blur). You don't need Neat Video either even though it's the best; Resolve has a solid de-noiser built in too. And finally ... Resolve heavily uses your graphics card compared to all other video editors. I use a RTX 2070 Super but cheaper cards will work fine. I was blown away when I could stack up effects, sharpening, grading etc and play it back in real time without pre rendering. Also, the Render Cache feature makes my life easier. I can pre render the entire video in Resolve as I work. Rendering a 5 minute 4K video then just takes like 1 minute or so. Messed up on a title or want to tweak a shot? Just fix that and then the render cache updates for that clip (takes just seconds), then you can render the whole video again ... in like 1 minute. Every time I see Premiere Pro (like in this video) I cringe now, people suffer way too much with that. I do believe there is a plug in for motion estimated motion blur for Premiere Pro. You can then fake the 180 degree shutter angle in post. The higher your frame rate you shot at, the better the result will be. It's not as good as true motion blur but is a great compromise. Also, Peter didn't mention something I noticed ... using an ND filter on the GoPro even in great outdoor lighting actually brings out a lot of noise in your shadows, effective dynamic range is reduced slightly. So my method of using motion estimated motion blur and ditching ND filters on GoPro for action shots is the best way to go overall for now. One more thing, I use an xRite Color Checker Passport Video as a color and contrast reference to assist with making my own corrective LUT files from scratch in Resolve to help get started with camera matching. I shoot in Protune on the GoPro, low sharpness, GoPro color (flat color produces a weird pink tint in the shadows that is excessively detrimental to your image when removed and makes reds look bad), native white balance, and usually -0.5 EV. By fixing the tint and white balance then using the color and contrast swatches on the color chart I can get to more of a natural or cinematic look that surpasses the highly saturated "video" look GoPros are known for. It's not perfect, 10 bit recording on future GoPro cameras could improve this but that is not likely a feature we will ever see. For now though, I have good methods that maximize what I can get out of this tiny camera. I literally just figured out the native white balance plus GoPro color combination yesterday, previously I used native white balance and flat color. I verified on the waveform that flat color really doesn't give you much more dynamic range, basically it's not worth it; you tend to have to add contrast or an s curve back in anyway and color suffers a lot due to the lower bit depth / steps of color recorded in the 8 bit file :)
I just received my Hero 9, and it's my first ever GoPro. I just stumbled across this tutorial while searching for something non GoPro. It's the first Hero 9 tutorial I've watched and I don't think I'll find a better one so thanks for getting me started.
Hi Parker, I really love your work, you guys are amazing! I just want to tell to you there is one feature that means a lot to us who will actually use GoPro as the action camera. New Hero9 has an option to record and delete up to 30 seconds while it is turned off, so when you turn it on, it will save the last 30 seconds while it was off. That is a great option and I will upgrade my Hero8 to Hero9 mostly because of it because I am doing fishing videos. With Hero8, I have to record whole time so I don't miss fish strike. That means I am emptying battery very quickly, same as the storage room. With Hero9, my battery will last longer, same as the storage room because 95% of time I am actually filming something I won't use later. Thanks again on all your work, keep it up!
I wont even buy the GoPro hero 9 because I'm still happy with my Hero 6, but I watch this video anyways because Parker's content is just beyond perfection
you guys are sooo good! I am soo used to using gopros, I film with them everyday on my youtube channel, and yet the motorcycle footage surprised me. Well well done!
Bro it would be really great if you tell us the config you used in the test, it looks really good and the comparison you did at the 07:47 is just insane. Thanks 🙏🙌
Usually shoot in flat color profile with low or medium sharpness, High Bitrate, wide lens at 60 fps, ND filters if you have them oh and ev comp at -1. That is what I use. I have no clue what parker uses but I hope this helps you
You need to use the MAX MOD LENS (sold separately by GoPro) with the Horizon Levelling function, then the Crop is eliminated by the larger Wide Angle Lens.
7:50 min mark...can u please show us or tell us what was the settings here on the bad one, and on the good one :) cuz mine sometimes looks like this bad ones...
I bought them and tried snowboarding with ND filters on. Looks pretty dope in the super bright areas (even with 240fps hypersmooth) but anytime a shadow showed up it gets real weird. I don’t think I possess the talent to use them correctly
What you call gimmicks are essential for sporters like us who don't like to post process the shit out of all videos. Which isn't a bad thing in either way, but the less I need to post process, the more time I can spend elsewhere. It makes videos look good out of the box. Resolution is one thing, but the right feel of the video another.
Very complete and easy to understand review. I'm a gopro hero 9 black user since a year ago. I totally agree if the video recording is bad if there is low light and my experience lately, my camera often stops recording at certain minutes and if recording at high resolution it will quickly heat up and turn itself off. are you also experiencing the same thing?
Technically the sensor is 23MP while 5k is 5120*2880 (14.7MP) so actually the narrow FOV and HyperSmooth doesn’t give you 3K quality it’s just doing sensor cropping and should still give the correct resolution
Hey Parker, just FYI, the mailchimp lav mic submission form here mailchi.mp/fulltimefilmmaker/ftfgear is not working. The subscribe button just leads to a '#header' value and doesn't engage a contact box for email. Probably a quick fix. May not affect everyone but for me not working on latest Chrome on Windows 10. Thought you'd want to know...
There is absolutely a reason for using a longer lens: Not having to edit 5K videos just for cropping in to 1080p later. A 5K edit eats harddrive space like nothing else... Another reason would be extreme slowmo shots which can only be done in 1080p.
Hello we hope all is well . I think you have just convinced me to get the new Go Pro we were not sure whether or not to get the ZV 1 or the GoPro . we hope you have a great week Many thanks for your review Love and Light Sarah and Glenn
Good and detailed review. As a GoPro Hero 9 Black user, I would add that in low light conditions not only noise appears, but the image becomes blurred, image stabilization completely stops working, strange artifacts appear, as if the image was superimposed on the image .. it is difficult to describe in words. The camera works well in good lighting conditions, but in low light, and not to mention the night aisle, it is a real tragedy. I do not understand why they did not use a larger sensor, since the camera is larger in size anyway. I think that they are trying to squeeze the maximum possibilities out of a small sensor, and when the competition starts to use larger sensors more widely, GoPro will announce a breakthrough and will switch to new (larger) sensors, advertising that they have not increased the dimensions of the camera. I bet GoPro 10 will have a catchy name, Hero 1.0-Inch Black, or something like that. Hero 9 is supposed to shock software-related solutions such as stabilization, Hero 10 will be the next hardware step.
I think the cropping with hypersmooth and horizon leveling is overstated. 4k is actually 8.3megapixels so that is why they added the 20megapixel sensor so that after all the stablization and cropping you are left with 4k or 5k. Otherwise what would be the point of the 20mp sensor? Just for photos?
You can use old GoPro Batteries with a 3d printed part to fill the space and they will work fine just not as long. for anyone not wanting to throw all their batteries away.
Hello ! So.. Do you recommend disabling hypersmooth because it becomes useless or because the image is more stable without it? By using the filters I mean.. Thank u :)
Parker, I have a question. I haven't own any go pro and I am planning to buy one however I am still not sure if I should buy the gopro 8 or 9. I use it more on the vlogging side. Which gopro do you think I should buy?
So, for a out doors hiking, backpacking, fishing video thing, what accessories would you recommend with the gopro 9? Such as mics, lenses, etc./ I have used a canon high end video camera for years but when rock climbing and such, it proves to be hard and I have ruined a few cameras. Looking to go this route. Advice please?
Wow This Sux! Just got off the phone and found out that live view is not supported on the Hero 9?!?!?!? It works on several of my friends have previous models just fine. The Playstation 5 & Parker's review of the GoPro were the two things I was most excited for in 2020.
Did I hear Parker is gonna review Playstation 5? Hmmmmm, sounds like a great idea hahahaha
what about covid-19? aren't you excited about that?
Parker, one of few filmmakers that can make practical reviews. This was Great!

Shall I buy this
Nice shots man!
What a great review. I was about to buy those ND filters but i don't see the point anymore, thanks for saving my money :D
They are a must for timelapses.

So nice to see you again Parker.... Im looking at the video now.
It’s not only gopro 9 these guys are expert in filming
by far the best review yet
I agree with every word
It's good to have a real Parker Walbeck full video. We were missing this a lot.
That B-Roll was amazing!

Parker and a Gopro. Welcome back to the dark side 😎
im here for the dirtbikes
Great minds think alike. Last Gopro I bought was the hero 6. Now I have the hero 9.
Yes! Larger sensor! Go Pro or somebody should make a larger camera with bigger sensor and possible micro lens options. This would be amazing.
Very good video and i really like it
who else wants to see the rest of that golf vlog
you must be a fun dude

Very well said review! Nice job parker, thinking about picking this gopro up!
Just love it. Keep up the good work. Truly inspiring. Can't keep off my eyes for a sec. Great work.

Hi, I'm Starting a vlog. Gopro hero 9 and canon eos m200. which one is better for blogging (Outdoor and indoor)
Great video! Enjoyed that intro a lot. Good call out about its necessary to have enough light for hyper smooth to work correctly.
Great vid Parker, good to see you back on the youtube channel, was starting to miss you in these videos haha! :D
I'm back! So, I'm gonna hit that subscribe button!!! Thanks for the detailed info 👍 good job
Iam dreamin' to buy a Gopro 9 bco'z this camera is so much expenssive here in our country. Thank you for this informative video!

Parker, what's you lighting setup on this video? How do you get no shadows on you face while wearing a cap? Great vid by the way.
