So glad for this comparison. I have used the 6,7,8, and 9. Always upgrading, but not to the 10 because of the overheating. The 7 and 9 have the best video quality. The 6 doesn't have 4k stabilization. The 7 was the first to have time warp. The 8 was horribly oversharpened. Nobody mentions the size: the 6 and 7 were tiny compared to the 8 and 9. The 8 didn't have replaceable lens cover. My favorites are the 7 and 9. In fact, I'm going to get another 7 because it has the slim case that the 9 doesn't have. It fits better in my pocket and is lighter. The 7 just seems smoother and less distracting.

This points out that the 7 was a big leap over its predecessors, the 8 offered very little improvement, and the 9 is a step backwards except for the horizon levelling and front screen. The best value remains the Hero 7. And because of the laggy touch control, the 7 is the most enjoyable to use.

I used to own the GP Hero 3+ BE back in 2015. Beyond the image stabilization and also the sound, it really doesn't look like GoPro have really done a huge amount to improve the cameras since then. I mean, sure, you get the touchscreen and you don't need the additional waterproof housing then you did on the 3, but I mean what really matters with any camera is the footage!

Bought the hero 8 about 10 months ago, used it for a month long trip. Loved it and invested into many batteries so I don’t think I’ll be doing the hero 9. Maybe the 10 or 11 if go pro survives the recession. Hero 8 does more than enough, and I already am used to not having a front screen and don’t need better stabilisation. So to me it doesn’t offer anything worth spending money on(like less glitchness, way better quality of video, and most importantly better sound) Thanks for the review.
I think we've all been waiting for this. But what we're truly waiting for is the **new** DJI Osmo Action... how that would _really_ start boiling up the competition!
It's definitely going to be 9 for me. The best mount for my walks is a head mount, but because of the difference in my ears, my videos always come out crooked. Horizon leveling fixes that problem
Ben, awesome! This is THE comparison that GP users have been waiting for. I'm just keeping my Hero 7 Black, thank you very much. It does what I need, and some of what I don't (firmware can be sketchy at times). The next "upgrade"? Maybe a DJI Osmo Action 2 if/when that comes out, and what you find in a review of that unit, Ben.
Good review. I've had my gp 9 for 2 days now and right off the bat i was disappointed in how inconsistent the response from the touch screen is. Low light performance still seems miles away. Audio isn't too bad. The stabilisation however is very good! Be aware though the gp 9 doesn't seem to work with the smart remote at this time. My thoughts are that more pixels wasn't the way to go. Bigger pixels for better low light performance and reduction in noise would have been welcome. Could a better processor have achieved greater improvements? Nonetheless I can see how they needed more battery capacity so the size upgrade is understandable. I'm hoping that they improve the gp 9 through future updates.
I've been shooting everything on an iPhone 13 Pro but have been looking into getting a GoPro. I was so sure I was gonna go for a 9, but after your incredibly thorough review, I might be looking at that 8 instead 👀Thank you for taking the time to do such an in-depth review of these!
Fantastic unbiased review. I think if gp9 reliably implemented all its new features it would be a bigger step up from 7,8 but as is looks like 8 is the sweet spot. I would imagine the gp9 will improve with firmware updates unless it’s hardware issues.
Are you satisfied with your 7? No regrets? I am choosing between all 3 currently and I feel like the only reason I want the 9 is because of the front camera which isn’t a good enough reason for me
Other then the "Horizon Lock" on the 9. I'm not seeing a big difference. But then again I'm not a big camera bug either. I'll keep my 7 Black. Thank You.

As an MTB rider, i am super happy with my GP7 Black. Sound is so crisp on GP7 Black for example when you are riding in the forest, i do love the hear the tire rolling over gravel or the leaves on the ground, etc. GP8 sounded dull on mtb videos imo. I am surprised how they have sounded so close to each other in this review.
Hmm similar review experiences from what I've been watching/reading from others on the new 9. Think I'll hold off until the issues are resolved with new firmware or maybe even just wait for the next iteration as I'm on the 7 & 8 still. Thanks for the reviews and honest feedback!
I choose 7 mainly because I can change the front lens frame if the frame broke or something happened to it, and hypersmooth on 7 look more natural in my opinion.
Got the Hero 9 and found the touchscreen issue is exactly as shown. One thing I did is (not sure it helps) Turn OFF picture grid. But the real solution I found was to enclose or hold the Hero 9 with one hand and use the other hand to navigate the menus. Test this yourself. When the other hand holds or grips the camera, the menu works as intended. Immediately remove the holding hand and the menu stops responding, Hold the device again with one hand and use the other hand finger to navigate and it works again. I think its a non standard capacitive issue.
I have to say that the Hero 7 Black has a reduced stabilisation at 4k. Switch it to 2,7K and its fine. You see that starting at minute 2:35. Great that you'll show that. For 90% of users 2,7K still looks great.
I've had a GP7 Black for nearly 2 years, completely untouched and still in the original packaging LOL. I came here to check out the picture quality, as this was a gift an I didn't do the market research myself. Thanks for the helpful comparison!
Great review and comparison so right on. No doubt all three are decent but like others, I will stick with my 7 black since it suits my needs just fine 👍🏻
Well, as a photographer I found the GoPro Hero 7 to be consistently better than the 9. The 9 is soft, too stopped down, over processed and an overly warm colour balance.
Hey Ben. At 2:52 or so. The Max Video modes are not meant to be used without the Max Lens Mod obviously. So the performance you're showing in the side by side isn't what you'd get from using the Max Lens Mod with that mode. Wanted to make that clear for your viewers. Thanks.
As someone who hasn’t owned any of the GoPro models, would it be worth just investing in the 9 or saving money and going for the 8? Or should I hang tight till they drop the 10?
Great! This is exactly what I found. I just sold my hero 9 :)) terrible terrible. Only the 5k is ok, lowering to 4k the image quality is terrible... You know what? The sales for the 8 and 7 will sky rocket now :)))) especially the 8, because a lot of people like me, waited for the 9, and is a big disappointing.
Hope next year GoPro equips itself with a new set of processors ASAP seeing the laginess on the GoPro screen is what GoPro must improve upon..... nice work...
In my opinion the hero 7 is the all-around better choice in most areas. the nine is corky and sometimes the quality seems to fade. The audio is also much better on the seven than the eight and nine. My opinion at this point I would opt to go with the GoPro 7...ALSO....Although GoPro mainly controls the action camera market, which is likely coming to an end soon, the major problem with GoPro is the lack of a remote control included with all it's cameras. In this day and age of vlogging, etc, a fully functional remote control is a must. GoPro continues to miss the boat. Other action cams that supply a remote will continue to gain popularity, while GoPro
Oh wow!! I was literally one click away from purchasing the hero 9 black and this video just saved me a lot of money, I will be keeping my hero 7 black (dusk white edition) for at least one more year since the "upgrades" are at best negligible in my opinion, and the fact that you cannot use the same batteries just made it a deal breaker now. Thanks for the help!
Can you update the firmware on gopros? If so it maybe just the others have gotten better optimised over the years and the 9 will too. Definitely interesting to see that though, is a might off-putting
This is the comclusion I reached. There are just too many pros for each of the 8 and 9 and I'd rather hold out for a better model without the compromises of stabilisation vs picture quality. Hopefully, the 10 Black will have a chip upgrade which will address most of the weaknesses over the 9, particularly the unresponsive touch screen.
Awesome review! I was on my way to get the Hero 9 but now I’m just going to grab the 8 since it’s clearly the best option for quality shots and touchscreen. I guess that’s why they are the same price at my local electronics store...
I found the touch screen worked better when not on the tripod for some reason. Once you tighten the bolt down to your mount the touch screen was really bad. Owned mine for a week then took it back. Also ran very hot. Run it as a webcam for an hour and see how hot it gets. My phone and Hero 9 Wifi don't get along either. Had to get my wife's phone to upgrade the firmware. Slow mo Video locked up without knowing until I took it off my helmet. Very sad I had to return it but for almost $500 I need to trust it. Hope to see a new Osmo 2 soon. Great video keep up the great work !!!
From what you've just shown me, I think the 8 looks best overall between these 3. Sharp photos, better light balance than 9, and the colours are quite good, (allthough it might be too harsh on the black/white balance in some cases). Thought 8 looked better in darker surroundings too. 7 looks really dull colourwize compared to the other two, wich takes away the adventure thrill for me. The "mooshy" grass on the 9 didn't bother me at all, nice horizontal features, but I think it sucked with light balance and with the coloring of the sky. I would never buy it even if it were the best of them, the slugging would drive me NUTS! Huge thank you for making this video. Deffinitely saved some money and a broken cam (hero9).
Great review and completely agree on skin tones and overall color science (looks like hell on the 8 & 9.) One big thing is the HDMI out on the 7 without needing over another $100 invested for media mods. Hero 7 Black is the budget winner.
I think for my uses I would also appreciate a bigger sensor size. It comes with a lot of issues though. To make use of the bigger sensor you need a greater aperture. The lenses on action cams are fixed focussed and so a greater aperture reduces the depth of focus. They'll need to figure out how to get variable focus lenses before the sensor can be made appreciably bigger.
Though the horizon mode made it level, it seems like comparing it to the other two it's shakier, the other ones are so still while the 9 is shaking a lot, you can see it from the clouds.

What’s your update? Have you purchased?
I just got a Hero 8, thanks to your comparison video. Thank you! Liked and subbed!
Hopefully firmware fixes will improve issues and remember Hero7 and hero8 there been tons of firmware updates already hero9 only had one update so far
This helped me decide that I will go for Hero 8 Black, Thank you
Great review and comparison so right on.
Thanks.
That's what I say at 3:29 - thanks for clarifying
As someone who hasn’t owned any of the GoPro models, would it be worth just investing in the 9 or saving money and going for the 8? Or should I hang tight till they drop the 10?
Considering the Covid situation, I'll stick to my GoPro 3 lol

PS: She survived pretty well :3
I still have my Hero 3 as well, honestly it didn't age that bad
@@user-hs2hd7wp9g l just bought the 8 🤣... The difference is mind blowing 😨
I have a GoPro 2. It doesn’t every connect to the app anymore hahaha
Im still using my gopro 4 silver, but im not sure if I want to replace it yet..
I have the 8, but it has taken a beating. I am really considering the GoPro 9 for my MTB channel.
All I use is the 8 for my channel things so sick. I seen how the 9 is isn’t really much better lol
Great effort, but this is not a fair comparison because all the footage has clearly been edited.
9 is so slow (touchscreen), what a shame.. I think the 8 is the best for your buck
@KeepitMelo 41 the 8 ore the 9?
The 8 is where it’s at! For sure I think
A software upgrade came out a few days ago by GP, Big improvement.
Thanks I personally think the 8 is a great middle ground and performed the best overall
I think the Hero 8 is still the best GoPro.
But the lenses and front screen
@whole27 I'm not sure but probably only 5k idk google it
Hope next year GoPro equips itself with a new set of processors ASAP seeing the laginess on the GoPro screen is what GoPro must improve upon..... nice work...
I hope so too!
Thanks for the helpful video. Think I will hang onto my 7 for now.
As a semi-pro video/photo guy but a complete newb to GoPro - this video is a great place for folks like me!
Although I'd love to have timed recordings, smooth 3, and hindsight, the sluggish touchscreen is a total no go. So wait for the hero 10 then?
YES! THIS IS AWESOME!!! IVE BEEN WAITING AND I FINALLY, AWESOME. MY FAVORITE TH-camR EVER!!!
Wow, thanks!
@@AuthenTech WOW! I CANT BELIEVE YOU SAW MY COMMENT!
@@AuthenTech can you shout me out in your next video. I know it’s a big ask but I hope you get this
Helle you Im Vietnam
I found the touch screen worked better when not on the tripod for
some reason. Once you tighten the bolt down to your mount the touch
screen was really bad. Owned mine for a week then took it back.
Also ran very hot. Run it as a webcam for an hour and see how hot
it gets.
Great video keep up the great work !!!
very exact comparison with detailed keypoint
I need Osmo Action 2. Bring it.
any idea when they come out :))
Great review and completely agree on skin tones and overall color science (looks like hell on the 8 & 9.) One big thing is the HDMI out on the 7 without needing over another $100 invested for media mods. Hero 7 Black is the budget winner.
Less than half price now 😉
Guess I'll just buy a 7 for now to start out with recording some volleyball games.
Thanks for the Review and The Recommendation
You've Saved my money
I will probably be going with Pro 8 Black
I'll keep my Hero 7 until they increase the sensor size and improve lowlight performance.
GoPro is just changing the name of the camera each year cause anytime an older camera is better than the newer one , things aren't right.
Quick question what's your opinion I'm 32 I skate and snowboard looking to get my first GoPro what do you think I should get .
