That 28" ride broke at a show in Montreal and he gave it to a good friend of mine . Dave was always heavy on all his gear ....... I use to love watching him , back in the day , from the side of the stage beating the living hell out of his set . 606 likes....... how fitting .
Dale Crover was very much an inspiration for the large tom sizes, the height of his hi-hat, & how low he sat on his throne in relation to how high everything else was. Sit low, play high, you get a lot more power out of each hit.
You know, back in the day, we all thought that he was definitely doing drugs because he was such an animal, hit so hard, was so physical and was so skinny. I'm now realizing that it was a bit of an optical illusion. He was definitely slender but Krist and his drum kit combined to make him appear small - when he was a completely normal-sized human. 🤣😂 Thank you for making this content that finally resolved the mystery.
By the way! The sticks he used were Aquarian Power Sleeve 2B’s! Amazing sticks. Nylon in the middle sections keeps the sticks from breaking and gives them more impact.
@@joefilipelli3867 I promise you. This comes from his drum tech and aquarian who sent me some pairs since they aren’t in production anymore. Look at Lithium at Live and Loud. You will see the nylon as part of the stick both in the middle and the tip. You are correct about the butt end however. I used them here th-cam.com/video/iPTCy7FLD4c/w-d-xo.html
Him with Nirvana taking over the airwaves pushing out hair glam metal from the 80s also pushed out the idea of having large configuration drum kits in the sense of being double bass kits with lots of toms sometimes creating a semicircle of toms with cymbals to follow. It sparked the idea of drummers of mainstream rock having basic configurations. He had very large components but the configuration was minimalist. One exception his snare mostly used was he used the Tama Bell Brass snare on recording Nevermind. I believe it was but still wondering if the Tama Bell Brass snare was studio supplied.
Uhh just wanted to bring up a correction about the live at the paramount show the cymbal stand that he used was a sound percussion heavy cymbal stand it was not a tama titan😊
When he got the Aquarian endorsement for In Utero all heads were Aquarian watch Live n Loud and same with sticks. Supposedly played Regal Tip sticks as well. I noticed you post a photo of him playing a white Sonor kit with 2 toms on the kit. Never seen that photo before, must have been in Scream. And as far as my knowledge he never played the Rockstar Pro live with Nirvana. Only appeared in the Come As You Are video and Tama and Modern Drummer when he did reunion gigs at CBGBs with Scream in 93. His main snare was natural finish 80s Superstar, a red Superstar, black Artwood and a Bell Brass
I’ve heard him tell a story of how they destroyed his kit after a show because it was falling apart, just so the record label would buy him a new one. Early on he must’ve had a tough time keeping his kits going.
When I started listening to Nirvana I was weirded out by the size of Dave's kits lol. I've come to actually love it and it has influenced the way I config my own kid (crashes on the front and ride cymbal beside the floor tom) though I don't set my cymbals 8ft into the air haha
I had to mod my hihat stand with extra long tubes+rod from a hardware store to achieve a hi-hat at shoulder level. It can STILL be adjusted down close to the snare... Why the fuck does not all hi-hat stands allow this high adjustability from factory? It would be really helpful for us who really wants insanely tall highhats, but it STILL allows other drums to place it way down!
Average person thinks Kurt when talking about nirvana. I'm convinced they never make it out of the local scene if not for Grohl. He was equally important as Cobain
13" is as big as I'll go for the rack tom. In case people don't notice, go to a live show where a drummer uses really big toms and it's very hard to hear them in the mix (unless they beat the utter shit out of them like Dave did and are mixed/eq'd right as well higher in volume). I think drummers like Dave used such large drums because it was an ego thing of "bigger is better" or looks cool and it was a trend among a lot of punk drummers of that era. But the reality is a huge drum which makes such a deep tone really gets muddied up with the bass player and overall grunt of a whole rock band. It's a floor tom really. It depends on what sound you like of course but unless you tune them high and play really hard you quickly get washed out in the mix. So imo, it's like you're wasting a lot of energy beating a huge drum that everyone barely hears. All blend, no cut. Just my 2 cents.
Yea I agree with a lot of what you said, there’s definitely trends with punk drummers such as high up hi hats which serve little purpose, and having an 18 inch floor tom can sound like another kick. Along with the fact that having a kit like Dave’s would be an absolute pain to move around lol, cheers for watching :)
All that considered, that IS what made him so popular. Bigger IS better. He was so badass and yeah it worked for him cause he did beat the crap out of them. But it was all a package.
I think it filled in the sound with nirvana rather than muddied it up. They already have tons of space in their mixes and tbh didnt sound the best live before pat smear came along. So ig bad for shows but good for the studio for certain types of music
I always wanted to have a TAMA drum set just like Dave Ghrol's with exactly the same measurements Box: 8 x 14 inches Rack Tone: 14 x 15 inches Floor Tone: 16 x 18 inches Bass drum: 16 x 24 inches But I never found it to buy. I would like to buy one of these three: Tama Granstar, Tama Granstar II and Tama Artstar II, but unfortunately I can't find them. Do you know where I can find it?
I love Dave’s drumming he hits so hard accurate I can only imagine how many drum heads he went thru In my opinion on of the best!❤
Paramount and Live and Loud had his best sounding drums imo.
Facts😎😎
agree.
Live and Loud is far better live performance overall.
That Halloween at the Paramount was legendary even before it was released as a Live Album.
I disagree I think DN was his best sounding drums .

Awesome vid brother! Dave Grohl is my favorite drummer of all time. His hard-hitting style is mesmerizing to me. You got my sub!
Aneurysm live at paramount is delicious
Agreed!
Love that song. It feels like it's composed of a series of different drum fills. I kind of adore that. Really fun to watch him play it, as well.

Haha that’s a brilliant story, glad I could clear that up!
He was indeed a regular sized Rudy and not pocket sized.
This iZ amazing 🤩🤩🤩 thank you so much for posting this 😊☕🥁🥁🥁 I'm obsessed with my favorite drummers' set upZ...
Awesome video man!!
beside Bonham,Dale Crover influence for drum sizes...p.s. at the paramount he had 18"and 19"crashes..
By the way! The sticks he used were Aquarian Power Sleeve 2B’s! Amazing sticks. Nylon in the middle sections keeps the sticks from breaking and gives them more impact.
Interesting, I never knew those sticks even existed, thanks for sharing!
Incorrect..DG only ever used wood sticks, and played them inverted with the tip end in his palm, giving them much more thump

Watch Drain You from Amsterdam concert. Stick breaks in half where the wood a nylon Meer up in the middle of the stick
@@tamadrummer1nz He started using them in early 93 so that would’ve been before.
Great and informative video man, keep it up!

It’s crazy how long that influence has lasted, today you see 1 up 1 down setups everywhere, big sizes not so much but his influence can’t be ignored.
Nice 1 buddy 👍 never realised how big the rack and floor Toms were. Obviously accounts for his sound and how hard he hit them
Uhh just wanted to bring up a correction about the live at the paramount show the cymbal stand that he used was a sound percussion heavy cymbal stand it was not a tama titan😊
Loved this video! I always wondered what he exactly played
I love how almost all of his gear choices are because he hits so damn hard lol
In the early days his kit was parts and pieces of whatever they could find at pawn shops to replace what the band had destroyed the night before .
When he got the Aquarian endorsement for In Utero all heads were Aquarian watch Live n Loud and same with sticks. Supposedly played Regal Tip sticks as well. You should also check out live in Amsterdam Paradiso. Dave used a 8x14 brass Tama Metalworks snare that sounds awesome...and used a black Granstar.
Very informative, no bs. Great video
Dw pedals are known for breaking with heavy use!! The Iron Cobra is much more reliable, in my experience.
I wonder why he didn't use iron cobra
Awesome vid.. really interesting
Thanks reviews
That was very cool and informative 👍 👌 😎 😀 👏
Thank you!
My fave drummerrr
That was really informative.
I’ve heard him tell a story of how they destroyed his kit after a show because it was falling apart, just so the record label would buy him a new one. Early on he must’ve had a tough time keeping his kits going.
Nice analysis. I always thought his hi-hat was that high so he could have more room to swing his left arm while playing cross armed.
Its so iconic
💙Dave
RIP Taylor💔

High up cymbals can be fun and give a visual flare to your playing but it's definitely more of a workout haha

Box: 8 x 14 inches

But I never found it to buy. I would like to buy one of these three:

I've seen a few come up on ebay and facebook marketplace here in the UK, you just have to keep looking.
You’ll have to piece it out mate. I’ve seen a 15” rack on Reverb a lot
That's why we can't have nice things🤷♂
- Dave's tech
I like this vid! You should keep going and do Phil Collins, Stewart Copeland, Neil Peart. I am sure there are plenty more
I was 12 when I got my 26 15 18 20. It’s just trying to to be like Bonham. Turn yer sticks about. Do they make 20 inch rims even anymore?
Why did he have a sonor kit?
You know he’s got a giant bonzo tattoo yea? You’re young.
This sounds really unsustainable. You have to be as big as Nirvana to destroy your dums like that 🤣
This generation-of-coolness uses the word "Icon" way too often.
