WTF Story is a sort of interesting historical artifact because the dev would eventually go on to make OneShot.
It was also the first Cave Story mod that really went heavy on the hacking.
All the pxtone song covers in there were sick as hell, too

Cave Story for me not just a game, it's actually was a revolution for the industry as a whole. I really love this game, and even after years i understand that for me it's a best indie game. Because of it i know about Vinny. Years ago i just encountered to his videos about some mods for Cave Story and here we are. Thank you for revisiting this wonderful game and reminding me about it. Happy 20'th year anniversary, folks.

Just to note, this version is incredibly outdated (1.37.3 was released on May 31st, 2022, which is barely 2 years old by now), so it doesn't represent the current quality of this indie darling turned into roguelike.

The biggest problem was his obvious skill issue. The game is 20 yo, if you dont know its story by now you really are not interested on it.
As someone said on stream, most if not all of those were made expecting that the player got the good ending aka expect you to have beaten hell.
Ignoring the fact that vinny keeps using the keyboard excuse(the game was made for keyboard binyot, that excuse doesnt work) and that he has beaten the game before, he was lacking the skill required to play those mods.

"U.N Owen was Her" is a reference to the Agatha Christie novel "And then there were none." In the book, there is a mansion owned by one "U.N. Owen." Eventually, the characters in the book realise that the name is itself a taunt- U.N. Owen is just the word "Unknown" written like it's a name. So "U.N. Owen was her" is actually read "Unknown was her." Incidentally, the character that the theme is about, Flandre (pronounced Flahn-druh), also has an attack called "And then there will be none."
And I know you don't really read these (at least not too much), but "suke" in Japanese names is usually pronounced more akin to "Skay." So, Daisuke would be "Die-skay." Technically, they say the "u," but it's very subtle, and usually it's easier for English speakers to just not say the "u."

(27:39 for those wondering) I'm the DripQuest guy, the one who sent Vinny on a sorta Drippy Quest and might've accidentally misunderstood what he meant by D-Pad 😅 (I'm so sorry, I really really didn't mean to make it worse for him) I understand he couldn't play much of DQ but I'm happy he played it anyway. Thanks Vinny. It was so cool. I'm also the one he responded to that said I'm just happy he played my mod.
For those wondering, I'm actually working on an expanded, finished, reimagining of DripQuest called "DripQuest DX" which aims to finish the game and make it better. The original was made in only a week, but DX will be finished when I'm done with it. I have a trailer on my channel if y'all care at all. Seeing Vinny play it actually motivated me even more to finish it! I'm hyped to show y'all maybe what I've been cooking for the last year and a half.

As the creator of Cave No Story, Cavern Tale, and the 30 second mod.
Please for the love of all that is holy WORK with the modders when making a pack. Dont send in their low-effort/early stuff on their behalf. They will help point you towards the scene's best. They will make sure it contains stuff that actually wants to be shown (and not something made as a joke one random night, or in Middle School). Give them a chance to represent themselves.
This isnt specifically to the creator of this pack (that's in the past). This is for all future packs regarding fan-related projects.
it might be too much to expect them to compile these packs but also contact every creator of every mod that is included
What your asking for is a level of coordination that unpaid fan volunteers can never meet, it's a bummer but unless Vin hires somebody to curate packs that's just not going to happen.
@@connor4wilson they really arent asking for that much though, when pushing the mods onto a demo pack thats gonna be shown to thousands of viewers, asking for permission and getting the most recent version of that mod (some of the mods here were years out of date) only takes a few messages, its more of a time crunch than something that requires a ton of effort. honestly there should be way more curation in the creation of packs in general, its becoming more and more obvious, clearly to vinny himself given the way that he talks about his experiences streaming packs recently, that hes been approaching them in bad faith for years but still isn't particularly interested in expending a large amount of effort/time in something thats not going to be incredibly funny. which is fine, its be insane to say he has to give every mod his all, its not his speed on a personal level or good for his career, but theres definitely been a change in the wind regarding modding these past few years, everything is very high effort and tied to an individuals "brand" so its all kinda uncomfortable treating it like the abandoned or otherwise disposable projects that have filled out the majority of the space in the preceding years, and thats something you can see that vinny himself is very uncomfortable with too. he should probably give more guidelines for the people who make his packs, but it'd be kinda weird to say "only give me low effort garbage or high effort comedy", because then if something isn't explicitly funny, you know where it sits, and that can be INCREDIBLY disrespectful
I think it also depends on the community. The bigger one is, like say, Gameboy homebrew that's a lot of separate contacts to make and yeah a massive ask, but for smaller stuff like CS modding we're mainly all in one place. I guess it depends, cause you can't reach everybody of course.
Maybe written-out guidelines from Vine are a better solution though.

Kind of a shame about WTF story. It starts with the kaizo stuff then shakes it up later. I remember around the end I was thinking "Holy hell this is the best platforming I've seen in years" and then it just stops abruptly.

Some of these mods look interesting. I definitely remember the last one, it's actually pretty good. It's pretty neat to see a thriving modding community for one of my favorite games.

Almost every single mod of almost every single game I've seen that changes the gameplay makes the game harder or it's "meant for players who want a challenge".
Why play these when you just barely started your own playthrough of the vanilla Cave Story?

@@BearKenster Yeah but sometimes, due to the huge amounts of games Vin plays, he forgets the controls and the flow of certain games. Just yesterday I saw him struggling with Mario and Zelda from the N64 era. I don't blame him at all, but jumping from X game at the start to mods made by fans who likely kaizo'd their entire levels is very silly

Overall, I had limited exposure to these at the time, so it was nice so see so many different mods together! There's no pressure, but I wouldn't mind seeing some of these in more dedicated sessions in a more one-by-one format - especially Doukutsu Randamu and Jenka's Nightmare.

slightly disappointed the "Sonic Story" mod where you... play as sonic with the exact sonic physics and stuff wasn't included, that one's cool as a novelty thing.

Im glad he finally got around to this pack. I also wanted to say sorry for not making it more focused and smaller thus making it hard for vinny to get anything out of it and if i made it bad.
Hey man, don't worry about it. You were enthusiastic and wanted to show a scene you were passionate about. Admittedly it was a very mixed bag (why is my first mod from 2013 that says "don't play this" in here)... but that included some good stuff that he seemed to enjoy.
It is what it is. Don't sweat it. My only advice is maybe try contacting and working with the mod creators/people in the scene if you're submitting stuff in the future. They can help point out the best that's out there.
The other thing is for Vine you want something immediately unique and attention grabbing in the first minutes. Long projects with shaky intros don't work. This is all a learning experience and not something to mope about.

Please ignore this random rude person (look at their other recent comments, they're just a weird miserable person lol). The pack was solid, during showcases Vinny pretty regularly doesn't linger on any particular mod, that's not your fault.
this mod pack was pretty representative of the current state of the community and mods in general over the past 5 years than having a curated collection. maybe like 20 to 30% of the mods we make in the CSMC are considered “serious”. but I think a properly curated and streamer proofed collection of the best mods the community has to offer is still in store for Vinny, that is if he’s still willing to give it a shot. the fact that he even played this collection (I personally sent his team headman and Mad Lad 3 years ago, no response) is still really cool. @polocatfan needs to shut the fuck up or something

No offense to whoever put this pack together, I love that we are even getting this attention, but this was a very disappointing set of mods. This was not a good introduction to cave story modding and vinny was absolutely tapped out for most of this stuff. A majority of the mods are very dated, especially the lower effort shitposts mods on here. WTF? Story, the Beta Remake and Jenka's Nightmare are not bad mods, but they are not the type of mods that should've been shown off in this rapidfire setting, especially to people outside of the community.
I didn't have my expectations high, but vinny calling this as a "dry segment" at the end was just sad to hear.

I feel like the original intention wasn't for it to be a "sunday stream" pack. Vinny just made it into one, so it kinda does come off as dry compared to everything thing on sunday.
I doubt he would've spent anymore time on each of them than he did here on any other day. To me, he sounded very disengaged for a majority of the stream. The modding community is putting together a curated pack of mods for him to play for the 20th anniversary, but I honestly feel like he's probably not going to be interested in any of the stuff the community has to offer. Vinny would probably enjoy Headman the most, but that mod is a bit too lengthy to be played alongside however many mods in a pack for an hour long segment.

eeeuuuugghhhh it seems pretty obvious he was looking for low effort bad mods to shit on or funny mods that he can maintain a low level of effort to play and the pack maker didn't understand/was hoping vinny was more into cave story than he actually is, and the fact there were no easy punches/low effort entertainment mods clearly pissed him off. that one chatter isn't necessarily correct but theyre not entirely wrong either, why *is* he playing these mods just to play them for 45 seconds, get a little miffed, apologize to everyone (which seems REALLY disrespectful) and then move onto the next just to do the same. hes uncomfortable, viewers are uncomfortable, fans of the mods are uncomfortable, and the mod makers, as gracious as they are in the comments and the chat, i gotta imagine are at least a LITTLE uncomfortable.
I will admit that I am slightly disappointed he didn't play my mod very long and I feel like he might've enjoyed it more if he was in the mood to actually play it, but I also think it's ok because he played my mod and I'm happy about that. Him playing it actually encouraged me to work even harder on the finished version of mine.
I was the one in the vid that he responded to, the one who thanked him for playing my mod even if it wasn't much of it. I am a huge fan of Vinny and as disappointed as I might be that he had a hard time with mine, I'm just happy he cared enough to check it out, I guess.
I can promise you Vinny was definitely not looking for bad mods to shit on. He doesn't enjoy doing that. There were just a lot of mods he had to go through in a short amount of time and people were whining they didn't get the attention they wanted. It's as simple as that. Ain't that deep.
@@BearKenster respectfully, have you ever once watched any of his fangame pack streams? thats literally all those streams are. i don't even think its morally wrong of him to do so, but its the reality of pack streams are that the things he enjoys playing are either hilariously dogshit, extremely funny, or the most top of the top-shelf that can immediately grab **anyone**. Things that are just kinda bad to pretty good or even top shelf but for a niche fan crowd aren't what he is into on a personal level or what works for his stream, see this pack. what DOES suck is when he gets pissy and weird about this stuff instead of just ending the pack early, which has been happening more and more recently
@@BearKenster I don't think anyone was whining in chat during this one, I didn't see any at least and I was there live because my mod was played. Everyone kinda understood why it was the way it was, it's just that next time we need to get a better and more concise pack for him to play.
@@BearKensterThat there is the problem with Vinny being a variety streamer. "Too much X, too little time". If a pack is properly curated, I really believe he needs to take the time to soak it all in and stop rushing through it. It's like he just speeds through packs for obligatory content and moves on quickly, and he does it with almost everything whenever packs are involved, to the point that he now conflates good games with bad games and treats them all the same.
Plus, don't do a stream like this when there supposedly isn't enough time, and he can't even be bothered to actually get into what the whole point of the pack is. Vinny has become a variety streaming equivalent of taking cursory glances at things.

yeah, looking at the comment section it seems like this was all just a misunderstanding, apparently it was an open secret that the cs modding community was working on a pack to send to him, but a fan unrelated to them and unaware of the situation sent in a pack and vinny and some others thought this was the big community pack. the pack maker is just a kid who feels horrible about the situation, vinny should really look into getting some set-in-stone guidelines for pack makers, maybe some hard line rules, just so he has a better chance of stuff being a good fit for the more content-consumption oriented streams he does, rather than the creation-demonstration packs that people have been making recently
Earlier on in the stream to someone who just wanted a birthday joke he happily exclaimed : "One year closer to the grave!" Which was totally off character for him. Not sure what his beef was this night.
