I’m not sure why he would say “after 3 Defenders “? They bought the first one and the engine light came on . Agreed not good . LR did replace the vehicle with an upgraded model . The second vehicle was fine but a mechanic at the LR dealership destroyed the wiring harness while attempting to install a winch . I would not say that was a Defender fail ? And now they are on there third vehicle and it is performing perfectly. I keep hearing on this and other videos the number “3’” . To be fair I think they are technically on there 2nd Defender . That being said I love these guys. Best on all of You tube!!

Yes I own the new P400 and I can honestly saw it’s the best vehicle Lr has produced. And yes I agree that the guys at TFL got special treatment . However I’ve had special also. When I need service they come and get my vehicle and leave me with a new loaner. I’m 30 miles from the dealership. So yes absolutely I agree with you but LR really has treated me pretty dang good over the years.
TFL should do a long distance endurance test off road with the Raptor and TRX, maybe 100 miles or something. That might highlight a day of real off road use rather that just a couple obstacles. Same driver, fatigue, weather, fuel economy, shocks, ride, everything would get a nice test. Does anyone else agree?
Yeah I agree, especially since this is _not_ what the raptor and TRX are meant for, they're both a racing and trail truck, not a crawler rig like the jeep
How it is very close between the two, the Jeep is slightly better off-road just because of its ground clearance and front and rear lockers. Fj has only a rear locker and worse clearance but still a very capable off roader. However, the fj will last 10x longer than the Jeep which makes it better in my eyes!
You guys REALLY need to move on from considering Moab to be the only Off Road terrain, it is actually some of the easiest terrain for off-road and plan to test further east terrains like Tennessee, Windrock off-road park for example. Less grip, more wheel spin, more challenege.
Or you know, maybe just not use one of the easiest trails in Moab. There's plenty of challenging trails that can put any vehicle to the test, they just choose not to use them.
TFL, please stop comparing apples and oranges, rock bouncers and prerunners. The Power Wagon is better suited to be tested against the Jeep. Take the TRX and Raptor and desert run them like they were built to do!
Easiest summary between the two: Raptor is refined even to be your only vehicle, daily driver, family hauler, etc. TRX is a great option if you can afford it as a weekender, you have multiple vehicles and an efficient daily driver.

Observe, the primary design purpose of a pickup truck is work: hauling and carrying. As their usage became more popular the manufacturers had to accommodate and adapt the vehicles to secondary and tertiary capabilities: hauling (more) passengers and towing. While this TFL test is a wonderful test designed primarily around rock crawling, it is neither the only version of offroading and it is scewed in bias of the Jeep. If you feel like levelling the playing field take your Jeep on a real Baja fast run with the Raptor and then average out the overall performance. Do this with other "tests" for a more direct vehicle-to-vehicle comparison by: load each vehicle up with passengers max, payload, etc. ... then you'll have more direct comparisons. Any test that primarily revolves around rock crawling is naturally scewed to the advantage of the Jeep ... that is not unbiased nor thorough testing. While the Jeep may generally have a rock crawling advantage, with respect to tall, wide, broad people they are terribly uncomfortable. Expand your tests and you're money TFL ...
This is an excellent comment and TFL should take it to heart. Some of their videos are starting to get a little repetitive to be honest. Expanding their content to more creative, serious and indepth test would be beneficial for all.

All trucks were amazing but there is an Easy answer to this question, which truck can go places the other cannot go? The answer is Gladiator. Plus, it’s such a good Overlander. Coming from a precious Wrangler and Tacoma owner.

They all won. They all completed this easy test. Judging trucks by who’s tail pipes rub the ground is crazy. It’s more a test of tire size than performance.

TFL ought to put together a video addressing the high tech live valve shocks “required maintenance” according their owners manual to satisfy the warranty requirements. Bet you the cost will be SHOCKING!
My first maintenance is at 15,000 miles on my Defender. I can take it to any garage or do it myself. It’s actually against the law in the United States to require that any vehicle be serviced only by the dealer . I’ve had 4 LRs in my lifetime and never have I had any to the dealer for maintenance. Also I have never been ask for proof of the above to satisfy warranty requirements.
This is a great example of what you guys do really well thanks and keep 'em coming. Plus I think extra brownie points for persisting with the Defender despite all the mishaps and showing it is a really great option (even if it is really expensive and will never satisfy those who are big original Defender fanboys and girls)

I wish we saw more comparison in different trail conditions instead of a Approach vs Departure angle test. I know they dont design these vehicles to try to see who has the best angles. It would of been cool to comment how they handle in dirt, mud, sand, rocky terrain, and speed on dirt trails.
The Toyota was too heavily modified to even be considered. I agree with Andre and Tommy: a Rubicon, be it Wrangler or Gladiator, is simply the best off-roader on the market. The TRX is too big, too powerful, too heavy, and obviously too expensive. The Raptor is better than the former, being lighter and with better off-road tech and equipment, but it is very wide and calls for steep prices. The Defenders demand respect, but reliability is iffy, and as soon as you climb up the specs trims and options, you can quickly hit $80+ The Gladiator it is. 😎👍 p.s. ....and Iveco Daily 4x4 would have been a nice addition, those things are popular in Australia, true off-road monsters! 😁
Have you noticed on the TRX the fog lights will turn on when the vehicle is moving so if you turn the wheel to the left left fog lamp will turn on as a indicator like high-end cars have try it out
Great videos! Defender was impressive but depreciation and low reliability is hard to swallow for the price you pay for them. You get the FJ and the reliability for a quarter of the price. The FJ and the Jeep are my top two.
Hey guys love what you do keep up the great work. Just gonna give my opinion, I just would like to see you do comparison with standard 4x4 trucks again like the the Z71, Fx4, Frontier Pro 4x you get the picture for us blue collar folks.
IF I were to have 1 of these vehicles to do it all, Tommy once again picks the perfect well rounded choice. Which is why I picked it for myself 2 years ago. :) It is reliable, capable, comfortable, practical and resalable. 4Runner every day of the week and twice on Sunday. And no, I am not a fanboy. But one cannot argue the facts. I want to say the FJ is the way to go, but I had that option and it was not quite as refined for everyday driving.
Defender is definitely the best in this off road capability test. But yeah, reliability is definitely a problem. 9/10 it’ll get you there and back, but that one time it’ll leave you stranded where the others won’t
I think a 2-3” lifted 4Runner on 33” tires offers a ton of versatility and is by far more reliable than the other vehicles. Way more cost effective as well. 👍🏼
After watching the video I would go with the Jeep, but that is knowing the reliability of the Defender. On the other hand, the TRX is still amazing and I would never say no to having the Raptor. Jeep would still be for my money.
So... Defender is: - The best off-road amongst the 6 vehicles, no scratches, smooth etc etc. - The most technologically advanced amongst the lot in terms of off-road and other gadgets - The best looking amongst the lot (as the video said, it can live in New York, Beverly Hills or Moab) - The most advanced engine amongst the lot with it's supercharged and mild hybrid engine. - The most comfortable amongst the group Very obvious reason why it wins on paper and in real test! Land Rovers are no doubt the best stock off-road vehicles on planet!

If it hasn’t been invented yet, you could make something to fit in the tow hitch, and it has a steel roller under it so it doesn’t rub on the tow hitch. It rolls on the steel roller.
In all fairness, the Defender killed it but a stock 2 door Wrangler Rubicon would have as well, and for far less money than anything else there. The 4Runner is really cool though also, just pricey with all the mods.

I'd like to see a best FAST off-road contest. I live in east Texas where our off-roading is muddy fields, but in the woods too. I feel like a Raptor would be the most fun, but would have the biggest chance of not making it through the trees.
Tommy, the increments of the Gladiator's hill descent control is in 0.6 miles per hour because 0.6 miles per hour equals 1 kilometer per hour and Jeep is a proponent of the metric system.
I just bought a boring 2021 4Runner TRD Pro:) Finding it pretty versatile. The Defender is amazing, but pricey and complex. 4Runner is old school, capable, and above all very reliable. Good fit for my needs!
Awesome video! Is this a highly caffeinated Tommy here, he was on fire with the zingers! The two big trucks did impressively well considering their size, but a great test of them would be to take them out in the dunes and let them rip it up in their true environment. Obviously the Jeep is going to be an off-road weapon in this type of terrain, that's exactly what it's made for. As far as scraping the hitch, I just think of a hitch as a skid plate for the bumper, it's most likely the strongest point of the vehicle anyway 😁
Agree with Tommy. As the most intelligent guy and with analyzing thought on all things, he is right. The 4Runner has comfort on-road and good offroad with mods.
Besides the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon , the next best off road rated vehicle direct from the factory is the Chevy ZR2 . Its that simple. The gladiator is too long and without a lift gets high centered too often .

That's basically for all the trucks in the video, no hitch or tailpipe would easily clear these obstacles, but it's really not what these trucks were build for anyway.

The defender towing ( bahaha) that vehicle will be ten times more likely to be towed than doing any towing.

The gladiator in its stock form I don’t think would’ve fared as well as the bigger trucks in their stock form. Gladiator had a 2” lift and 35” tires

I saw a brand new TRX on a car hauler. I can’t imagine taking a brand new vehicle worth north of a years salary and doing harsh off-roading.
The owners of them can't imagine taking them off pavement either.

Hey guys love what you do keep up the great work. Just gonna give my opinion, I just would like to see you do comparison with standard 4x4 trucks again like the the Z71, Fx4, Frontier Pro 4x you get the picture for us blue collar folks.
IF I were to have 1 of these vehicles to do it all, Tommy once again picks the perfect well rounded choice. Which is why I picked it for myself 2 years ago. :) It is reliable, capable, comfortable, practical and resalable. 4Runner every day of the week and twice on Sunday. And no, I am not a fanboy. But one cannot argue the facts. I want to say the FJ is the way to go, but I had that option and it was not quite as refined for everyday driving.
Defender is definitely the best in this off road capability test. But yeah, reliability is definitely a problem. 9/10 it’ll get you there and back, but that one time it’ll leave you stranded where the others won’t
I think a 2-3” lifted 4Runner on 33” tires offers a ton of versatility and is by far more reliable than the other vehicles. Way more cost effective as well. 👍🏼
After watching the video I would go with the Jeep, but that is knowing the reliability of the Defender. On the other hand, the TRX is still amazing and I would never say no to having the Raptor. Jeep would still be for my money.
So... Defender is:
- The best off-road amongst the 6 vehicles, no scratches, smooth etc etc.
- The most technologically advanced amongst the lot in terms of off-road and other gadgets
- The best looking amongst the lot (as the video said, it can live in New York, Beverly Hills or Moab)
- The most advanced engine amongst the lot with it's supercharged and mild hybrid engine.
- The most comfortable amongst the group
Very obvious reason why it wins on paper and in real test!
Land Rovers are no doubt the best stock off-road vehicles on planet!

On the frame bender, the raptor clearly took a harder line and the other 2 were 3 ft right. Just saying

If it hasn’t been invented yet, you could make something to fit in the tow hitch, and it has a steel roller under it so it doesn’t rub on the tow hitch. It rolls on the steel roller.

For $40k less, the Ram Power Wagon is the best off-road truck. It’s a proven beast.
For this kind of off-roading? Yeah. I agree. If you want a large truck. The TRX and Raptor are built for a different purposes.

I was just thinking the same thing, Jeep is good though. The full size trucks can be a little too wide and heavy for certain trails.

In all fairness, the Defender killed it but a stock 2 door Wrangler Rubicon would have as well, and for far less money than anything else there.
The 4Runner is really cool though also, just pricey with all the mods.

@@HarryKuloh well, it's proximately 45k new, with probably easy another 20k mods in it. 65k for a 4Runner has a substantial investment, considering a $5,000 XJ will outwheel it LOL.

I'd like to see a best FAST off-road contest. I live in east Texas where our off-roading is muddy fields, but in the woods too. I feel like a Raptor would be the most fun, but would have the biggest chance of not making it through the trees.
Tommy, the increments of the Gladiator's hill descent control is in 0.6 miles per hour because 0.6 miles per hour equals 1 kilometer per hour and Jeep is a proponent of the metric system.
Again, youre only testing approach and departure angle, show rock crawling mudding etc
That’s my thought too. This entire test could have been recreated with a tape measure in the dealer lot.

To be fair with the Raptor, it was taking a much difficult line at the frame bender than the TRX and Jeep

I just bought a boring 2021 4Runner TRD Pro:) Finding it pretty versatile. The Defender is amazing, but pricey and complex. 4Runner is old school, capable, and above all very reliable. Good fit for my needs!

Awesome video! Is this a highly caffeinated Tommy here, he was on fire with the zingers! The two big trucks did impressively well considering their size, but a great test of them would be to take them out in the dunes and let them rip it up in their true environment. Obviously the Jeep is going to be an off-road weapon in this type of terrain, that's exactly what it's made for.
As far as scraping the hitch, I just think of a hitch as a skid plate for the bumper, it's most likely the strongest point of the vehicle anyway 😁

The big pickups did better than I thought they would. They are massive trucks. I hate to say it but the Defender did the best off road.
Agree with Tommy. As the most intelligent guy and with analyzing thought on all things, he is right. The 4Runner has comfort on-road and good offroad with mods.
That TRX has some serious rear articulation.
Besides the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon , the next best off road rated vehicle direct from the factory is the Chevy ZR2 . Its that simple. The gladiator is too long and without a lift gets high centered too often .
I like the cough to mask the sound of scrapping from the gladiator rear muffler lol

Watching the video, I was thinking all they need to do is take a Sawzall to them and give them a slash cut, then they'd be good to go. Or side exit of course.
That's basically for all the trucks in the video, no hitch or tailpipe would easily clear these obstacles, but it's really not what these trucks were build for anyway.
All super super cool vehicles in this contest ! The V8 is coming for the Defender and that will give it a definite boost.
