I'm in my 70's and I read Pet Sematary in the dark with a flashlight because I had no power. I was home at night with 2 small children during a storm. My then husband worked for the electric company and he, of course, got called out. I'll never forget it.
It was so funny when the light kept turning off 😂

Sounds like there are cicadas and frogs where you're at. The cicadas are the ones making that droning/humming sound.
The Body was made into the movie Stand By Me. You probably already knew that. Both are great and not scary! ❤️

A lot of people do not know that Stephan King does not write
horror exclusively. The Body definitely was not horror or suspense.

Lexi, I LOVED that you still did this for yourself and dropped it after Summerween. It was great. I put out my pumpkin smelling soap and planted my fall mums while watching/listening. It was great. No apologies for being late. ❤❤

❤ Another Summerween series (or just a spooky series, it doesn't all take place in the summer) recommendation would be Lockwood and Co. It starts with The Screaming Staircase. It's an older middle grade and it's very scary, very funny and of course, very British. There are rival paranormal detective agencies, sword fights, terrifying ghosts, secret societies and conspiracy theories.

I have the waterpark book on my tbr pile and waiting for The only one left to come in at the library. I love so much that you mention making readathons and challenges work for you. ❤ re: the flashlight - does it have multiple brightness modes? Some flashlights automatically turn off or step down the brightness if you have it on the brightest setting for too long

Your books were almost the same books I read for Summerween, which was also a really busy week for me, and so I only really managed to read for the last four days. After reading The Only One Left, I went on to another "house on a cliff" cover and read Malice House, although technically Summerween had ended. I never got to Wretched Waterpark but I'm hoping to read it before summer ends. Glad I'm not the only one who bent the "rules" to make it work.
I can never get enough Summerween, so glad you did this! i finished The Only One Left yesterday and completely agree with your thoughts on it. Today I'm starting You're not Supposed to Die Tonight, really excited that you loved it!

I'm so interested to read Her Body and Other Parties. I've heard nothing but amazing things about this book but there was always something that had me skeptical about it. It's great to hear your balanced review of it.
Speaking of the epilogue making the book, I just read VenCo - a new Salem witchy book. It's definitely contemporary, and I loved that it's written by an indigenous author - fabulous new perspective on the topic. But! I was debating DNFing it half way through. It wasn't bad at all, just wasn't as engaged as I hoped. I kept going and hot damn. The last 80 pages and the epilogue made it all worth it! Definitely recommend it as long as you're willing to push through.
I’m reading a horror water park book too! It’s called Kill Creek by Cameron Roubique and this is the synopsis:
In the summer of 1983, thirteen-year-old Cyndi and her three new-found friends, Stacy, Zack, and Brad decide to sneak away from their summer camp in the middle of the night by rafting down the nearby rivers. After spending a tense night lost in the woods, the four teenagers stumble into a mysterious water park that appears to be completely empty. At first they are thrilled to have the rides all to themselves, at least until one of them disappears. Soon they discover that they are trapped in the park, and a dark figure is stalking them from the shadows, picking them off one by one. I am not a horror or thriller person, but I loved You’re Not Supposed to Die Tonight. I had one small complaint, but that was likely my lack of knowledge about the book going into it ( I won’t spoil anything). Outside of that, I loved the characters. I loved the creepy factor. It was great. It made me want to look into more thrillers.

Have you ever read the Nevemore series by Kelly Creagh? It is a YA gothic series inspired by Edgar Allan Poe. It came out back in 2010, I believe, back when I was in high school. And I still love rereading this series to this day!

I didn’t think that The Body was scary, it’s more about childhood, friendships, and coming of age. It is perfect for summer, and great for someone wanting to try out King, but not sure about scary stuff.

The movie Stand By Me is based off of Stephen King's the body. It is a GREAT movie. I highly recommend it.
So when Merphy Napier read You’re Not Supposed to Die Tonight, she said she loved the book and the epilogue ruined it. Just goes to show everyone’s different and you should just try it yourself if you’re interested!
