    Thank you so much for the information. I wished I found this sooner. I had a horrific time with my 10 yr old Springer with different foods. Six years ago he had ACL surgery on both knees he now has implants. He has lost 10 pounds and was doing well. We kept the weight off close to a year. Unfortunately he gained it all back. I have struggled for so long to try to find the best food possible for him. I have tried everything from cooking to raw to fresh and lower calorie foods and even walking him daily. Nothing worked and I also experienced the worst with raw food. He landed in the ER. Talk about feeling the worst guilt a parent can feel. I knew the risks, but he lost so much weight and he was doing better got a bad bag of food, and paid dearly. I noticed now that he’s struggling a little more with the weight. He doesn’t have full-blown arthritis, but I do give him a daily supplement. However, after finding your video, I am looking to switch his dry food to a more appropriate weight management food. It is such a wealth of knowledge and very appreciated.

      Thank you so much for the kind encouraging words! I am starting both my old girls on Perfect Weight/Joint Support from Science Diet. I got them the metabolic Plus Mobility and they hate it!!! So this is the oTC version so anxious to see if they like it. Let me know how it goes!!!

    I just came by your channel and it is Awesome! I am constantly confused and fall prey to the marketing scams even though I know better, it is hard to find the right food. I am always curious about Raw Food and specifically Blue Ridge Beef and K-9 Kravings as they are readily available in my area. Do you have an opinion on Raw Foods? Is Raw Food just marketing? Do you have an opinion on Francis Pottenger's study between cooked and raw foods and pasteurized vs non-pasteurized milk given to cats/kittens? It is interesting that volunteer weeds thrived in the raw food pens. Based on Pottenger's study it seems raw meat is the way to go, but I am not well educated in nutrition.

      I am unaware of the Pottenger study you mentioned. I am not in any way an expert on raw. I have not seen any peer reviewed studies on the benefits of raw vs cooked. I am not against raw but since my main concern is the balance of nutrients, I am aware of many homemade diets being very unbalanced. If you do homemade/ raw I would suggest getting a recipe from a real board certified vet nutritionists, not self proclaimed nutritionist! I stay in my lane, which is helping people choose from commercial dry and canned foods. Where I get into trouble is when raw/ homemade folks demonize kibble with ridiculous lies to promote their ideas. And I don’t mean well meaning pet parents, but the influencers selling something!

    Hi Glen, Well got the dreaded advice to help my pup lose some pounds. I decided to look for videos from you and Dr Rae when starting my search. I came across this video. Would you still recommend this perfect weight? I’ve been comparing some lines with the big 3, Purina, RC, and SD. Don’t really want to go to a vet diet and hopefully can stick to one I can buy in the store. For SD I was doing a compare of perfect weight and Lite - of course clear as mudd to me lol even though SD is the most transparent of all companies on the website but don’t understand the difference from one to another. I think if I had to decide it would be between SD and Pro Plan weight management. I used to prefer RC but they are the least transparent with consumers and claim weight limits in there adult diets and stuff, it’s weird

    It's really interesting to see that metabolic affects regulation of genes especially via giving nutrients through the GI tract and not IV. Do they provide more transcription factors to up regulate the fat burning genes? Would love to read the science behind it.

    • @PetFoodPuzzleGuy
      @PetFoodPuzzleGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Just Google Nutrigenomics, the study of how nutrients affect gene expression. It is now also called Predictive Biology. Hills arthritis diets also utilize the technology. Human studies are also ongoing, not just pet food.

      I have a Maltese/ bichon mix, ZuZu, 8 years old. And a Havanese, Bella, 14 years old. Bella just had a dental and her senior blood work came back wonderful. They are both eating Science Diet Sensitive Stomach Small Bites. Though I am close to putting Zu on Perfect Weight again. She doesn’t like it as much but her metabolism stinks. If I knew of a healthier brand I’d switch.

      Hi and thank you for writing back. We have a soon to be 5 yo in July and his name is Scooby Doo. He likes chicken, peppers, Hamburg, pasta, rice and some other veggies. Loves watermelon. That’s human food. He’s always been picky on dog food. Scooby is very active. He runs, jumps, fetches and just loves to play. Don’t know what food to try as we have bought different brands of food and he’ll eat it for awhile and then he doesn’t like it. What do you recommend for a JRT? Please help!

    • @PetFoodPuzzleGuy
      @PetFoodPuzzleGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would recommend Purina ProPlan Sport. It is a higher calories diet for active dogs and I know a few people I trust say it meets their dogs energy needs very well. There are other high, even higher calorie foods but I don’t like the other nutrients provided. Unfortunately your pup has gotten used to people food! You could try putting the food in a microwave, really just to warm it up to increase aroma. Sometimes that helps. good luck!

    One does not need a "prescription" to buy Hill's Prescription Diet foods.
    A basic understanding of metabolism is needed to understand nutrition and medicine.

    • @PetFoodPuzzleGuy
      @PetFoodPuzzleGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, most pet parents, me included are much more apt to buy a diet formulated by nutritionists and clinically proven to work than try to learn about metabolism. In fact, it’s hard for me to see how the combination of those ingredients does what it does. I am very familiar with L Carnitine, a proven fat burner that helps maintain muscle, but that’s all. Like I say in the video, if your pet is really obese, weight loss should be handled by a vet. Hepatic lipidosis is nothing to mess with. For pets prove to obesity Perfect Weight is probably their best bet. Hey! It scored 9 on Dr Rea’s channel!

    • @edschulhof6303
      @edschulhof6303 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PetFoodPuzzleGuy I thought I posted this earlier. Hepatic lipidosis is usually a secondary consequence of several possible problems. Not just diet. Many of those problems are caused by diet, so I get your point. I am complimenting YOU!!! LOL

      While it’s true that it’s not an official prescription like you would need for a drug, you still are not able to buy any of the hills prescription diets without vet approval. I’ve seen a lot of influencers spreading rumors that you can just walk into a store that sells these foods and buy it and that’s not true at all. They will ask you for the slip from your vet at the register. Same with ordering online; your vet clinic has to send written approval to them for your order to be processed. I think people spreading this myth have never actually bought prescription food, or if they have it was straight from the vet office (where ofc the vet isn’t going to need to give written permission to themselves lol)

      @@violetblythe6912 Hill's trademarked "Prescription Diet." The FDA only requires that prescription/veterinary diets show they "manage" the illness listed. Hill's requires that veterinarians issue a prescription in order to sell it. There is little difference in nutrient levels between Science Diet for Sensitive Stomach & Sensitive Skin and Prescription Diet i/d Digestive Care.

    The largest wet cat food can that Hill's sells is 5.5 oz. The price isn't outrageous, but for people with more than one cat, a larger can would be helpful and more economical.

    • @PetFoodPuzzleGuy
      @PetFoodPuzzleGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

      For years Hills cat foods only came in 14 oz cans. They eventually went to smaller cans and convenient pull tops because market surveys showed that’s what cat owners want. It’s all popular demand.

    Feed a dog real food. Give them plenty of exercise. They won't get overweight. The 31 year old dog in Portugal has been fed nothing but homemade food, lives on a farm. He runs every day. Never been in a kennel or on a leash. Most lazy pet owners can't be bothered.
