I'll never forget the day I rented RE2 as a kid. Never played the first RE. Loaded the game up, was in awe of the cutscenes, got control of Leon and made it to Kendo. When the zombies broke through the glass to maul homie, I freaked out and unloaded all of my ammo. Felt like a badass as I walked over to dudes corpse. A zombie latched onto my leg and I screamed like a girl, turned the game off, took it back to the rental store and told them the game didn't work and I wanted to swap it for another game lol I eventually went back much later and 100% the game.

@FoNgThOnG I remember when I was a kid my dad bought all the resident evils. My first one was outbreak file one Jay's bar (my dad left his character afk to use the bathroom and when I heard the door break open and the zombies moaning I freaked out and grabbed the controller and moved my dad's guy to the nearest room where I learned you could hide under the bed) good times lol

Without a shadow of a doubt the 1998 release of RE2 set a gold standard that games would follow decades later. It was amazingly detailed, a tightly woven story and plenty of replay value. Zombie satire, action, explosions and mystery. It just begs the question and shames as to why RE2 remake did not get that treatment instead of a cobbled together mess of both A and B story campaigns, continuity errors in the story and a complete derail after the police station segment. Not to mention all the other dump truck sized loads of missing content it failed to give When talking about this with other horror fans we think they ether ran out of money, ran out of time or they were on a strict leach.

@@Xabier2.0 there was a lot missing in Re2make. And there were some moments that were facepalm inducing. One encounter that exemplifies this is the scene were the player finds the bolt cutters (specifically in Claire's scenario). Leon and Clair meet in person but Leon is on the other side of the average height chain link fence. They then proceed to split up again. During this scene I find myself saying "oh no. An average size chain link fence. It's too bad there isn't an item close by that could cut through the links!" I mean come on, the bolt cutters are literally right there, and Leon isn't even in immediate danger. The two had plenty of time to catch up and formulate a plan.......

    > One improvement RE2 made was letting you switch what grenades you are using;
In the first game, you had to use up all the rounds in the launcher before being allowed to switch to a different type (an earlier build had that, but it didn't make it in to the final release)
    > You can cheese the game into giving you free ammo refills by emptying your guns before using Leon's weapon upgrades on them
    > It's kind of a shame they removed proper item examination, with the 3D models, but I guess it wasn't really needed

Code Veronica has evolved more than RE 2 ever did, I loved those games but the difficulty and content shows that RE 2 was missing from the original playstation which was later added in various versions like PC (Dreamcast, the PC legacy equivalent was used to promote Code Veronica and the "Value Pack" release, meaning Capcom apologized to Sega fans who wanted to see RE 2 on the Saturn, so the next game was released exclusively on the Dreamcast).

I still remember my first day with this game. I was like 7 years old. My mom wouldnt let me play it because it was too violent, but my dad did, so I played it while my dad slept and mom wasnt home. Even then, I knew the hiding spot was on top of the fridge, so I played it other times as well. I didnt understand tank controls at the time, so I was perpetually stuck in the opening segment with the burning cars behind me, watching the zombies slowly approach me and inevitably kill me. and my god, the death scene of the zombies eating me and the blood splatter on the screen was nightmare fuel for my 7 year old brain. so much so I didnt touch the game for another year after 🤣 but once I got to the second camera angle and got to Kendo's shop, the controls finally made sense, and was addicted to the game after that. this game will always be an integral part of my childhood

  • @agateram

My first experience with RE2 was only being able to play the A scenarios, as I couldn't save my game on a PS2 memory card. Countless hours were spent on Leon A, trying to perfect my strategy to get to the end of the game in a single sitting. Got myself to about sub-1 hour, and that's how I got into speedrunning too, funnily enough. It's only after I bought the GC version that I got to fully experience the rest of the game's content, and needless to say, it's no surprise that RE2 is the pinnacle of RE for me.
This game set my standards so high even as a kid, so when Remake 2 came out, I was heartbroken to see how lacking it was. But at least we still have RE2 to go back to.

With all the fan remixes of the RE2 OST on TH-cam already, perhaps they didn’t want the remake to sound like a pale imitation, and decided to go their own way. Not an easy decision to make.
Credit where it’s due though: The sound design was terrific in every other way. I play the remake with headphones on. In the main hall, it’s so eerily quiet that you can sometimes hear the occasional zombie scraping and hissing outside. The Tyrant (I’m not calling him Mr X) stomping around the cop shop lets us know specifically where he is.
That was very effective at intimidating players, at least until I replayed the game until I can figure out how to work around his limitations

Then I'm like "I'm going to stay far away from them much as I can" I even swung the knife at them later on just to see what happens and sometime I get caught being too close. I always thought 3 nemesis was just a filler for re 2 original. I mean I just killed the worm and neither character nor any of the notes to read, saved itself from how flat the story is. It makes sense because now with 3 nemesis, you can quick turn, sexily climb up and descend down the steps mind you which is a good thing because you couldn’t do that with re 1 directors cut, re 2 and strangely not even in code veronica. Also in 3 you could dodge simple to major attacks, if the game asks you of whether you would like to discard an item, you could just say yes without having to see an animation for it. Unfortunately the door opening and closing is still a short loading screen but the good news is Raccoon city has a bigger map to explore, lots of puzzles if you like and personally my favourite are the cutscenes are pretty and not like dolls like re 2. Oh and Jill’s choice of clothing personally for me I just can’t take seriously. Its just too much I don’t know never bothered to find out more but maybe she was partying 🤷‍♂️

A couple of years ago, I bought a second hand copy of RE2 for the GameCube for 25 quid, about 33 bucks. It was worth every penny and I loved playing it. Great bit of nostalgia from when I had it years ago on the playstation.

I could barely watch my uncle and sister play RE one when I was a kid (I was only 5 or 6). I stayed away out of fear until RE3 came out and then I beat that game a few times. Once I beat that I was hooked and went back to RE2 and realized this was as my favorite of them all.

I’ll never forget when I played this game and felt it was hard but not as hard as the first but also it was pretty short. However, there were more zombies than the first. I had to get a game enhancer and loaded a bunch of cheat codes on the PS1 that would unlock all the guns and made me invincible to my all the enemies and I just maul every enemy with a chain gun with also unlimited ammo. I was able to beat the game really fast.

Wait, did Ada _actually_ die in RE2 Original, with no "Use this!" rocket launcher throw to hint (at least to us, if not also Leon) that she survived? It's been forever since I saw non-remake play to remember how it played out.

I believe Ada’s exact fate in the OG RE2 depends on if you’re playing Leon A or B (I don’t remember which is which tho), with one of them giving her a Disney Villain Death then vanishing thereafter, while the other has her die in Leon’s arms then reusing her model to toss him a rocket launcher for the Super Tyrant.

I was obsessed with zombie movies when I was a kid. This game was just about perfect in every way.

I love all the early resident evil games, up until they changed the camera angels to over the shoulder, then i lost interest.
It will never be what it was but i will have a lifetime of memories, thinking back to the first time i ever laid eyes on resident evil 1 on ps1 in 1996.
I was an 8 year old kid and my uncle bought the game and id stay up all night with him watching him play it.
The first one will always be my favourite, simply because without the first, none of the others would’ve come into existence.

Good video and thank you for not succumbing to the demands of the disgrace known as TH-cam. TH-cam is apparently VERY strict and you putting the actual in game music normally would result in copyright strikes and the video being taken down or demonetized but it seems in this case you won and I’m so happy for it. Screw TH-cam and their stupid against the constitution rules. So thanks for putting the music in the video and not letting TH-cam win.

Re2 really was perfect in every way for its time, the environments, the soundtracks, the storyline, everything about it was just was just perfectly creepy and captivated me when I was a kid, I remember getting up some nights late at night and being scared to even go to the bathroom because of it haha, and even though the remake was very well done, the OG RE2 to this day remains my favorite game of all time. I first played it when I was around 8 years old, and now I'm 34.
And even though the remake was really good and it did a good job of capturing that 90s era vibe, the original just holds a lot of nostalgic value that the remake just doesn't quite hit on, especially playing the original game back in the actual 90s.
Play that game back then actually I felt like it fit perfectly into that timeline.
    😎

Mikami was not directing the beta of 2, it was always being directed by Kamiya. When it restarted as the final version it was mainly Noboru Sugimura being brought on for editing.
And the T-103 is not there to kill survivors more than it is to obtain G since Umbrella thinks that Hunk's team had failed to obtain it.
For the STARS members in 2 they're all intended to be in Europe, but 3 changed that.

I still don't understand why RE2 is my favorite, even to this day. It was more than shooting zombies, and running from Mr. X. The story is RE1 but bigger, but I did always get the feeling that while Claire and Leon were trying to survive, there were others in the city who were doing the same off screen. It always felt like if you just got there sooner, you would've saved more people.

One thing I think is interesting that I’ve never heard anyone bring up is if you don’t take either the submachine gun or side pack in your first playthrough, both will be there in B scenario which is my go to strat. I’m not sure if there’s actual evidence to support this or if it’s my own head playing with me but I’ve always felt B scenarios are way harder so both items definitely help even it out
