Theres a Japanese film called Linda Linda Linda. Its about a group of schoolgirls and a Korean exchange student wanting to perform a punk song for the talent show. I remember than when I wss in highscool during the mid 2000s (Yes, I'm that old) the girls fought for their right to wear pants in many schools. At first they were allowed to wear them only during the colder seasons, bu then in many school, including mine, they got their right to wear them whenever. Sadly boys aren't allowed to wear shorts and that's alsosexist, thinking that in order for a man to look presentable thwy have to cover ad much skin as possible even if that goes against their comfort.
Also I think that standarized school uniforms should be dropped for a more flexible school dress code that follows the school colors or something like that.

    • @AnastasiaR
      @AnastasiaR 3 ปีที่แล้ว +807

Absolutely. When you’re not an adult you can’t “know” fully what you’re getting into (and that’s why legal consent is a thing) and you don’t magically gain all that knowledge at 18 either but we legally behave as if they do. Also even if they did fully know that doesn’t mean they had much of a choice! It depends on the situation but in some scenarios some form of sex work is the only option to make enough money. Is it a choice if there is only one option, even if no one is holding a gun to you head forcing you to do it?

    • @aishatakahashi4963

    • @enraegen561

I think it is depicted so in movies, so that it places the blame on the victim. "oh, I'm no predator, she is fully aware! She was the one who pursued me in the first place, I was reluctant to accept, you see, I'm a good guy!"
It's a way to live out the fantasy without the guilt of sexualizing unassuming children, or using naive young women.
Problem is, it happens in real life and it's far from mainstream to consider this angle.

The topic of enjo kousai (compensated dating) was something I read about in the early 2000s with a morbid curiosity after seeing two Japanese movies that mentioned it.
The reality is probably closer to: teens being forced to go on "dates" (sexual acts) and not being compensated for it, and yet that is still counted as compensated dating.
Also actual compensated dating was not common at all, much less common than media at the time wanted people to think it was.
Also consider the following scenario: a school girl is forced into sex and afterwards, whilst she is still dazed from the shock of what just happened, he slaps the equivalent of 100$ onto the night stand of the (love) hotel and leaves.
He gets to leave with the thought that this wasn't abuse because she got something out of it.
A lot of what's counted as compensated dating still wouldn't be consensual even if minors could consent.
The idea of a school girl willingly and knowingly exchanging sex for a designer bag (or straight up money) is likely mostly fictional.
Some people like to pretend it was more common than it was, either because that's one of their favourite porn/erotic manga scenarios or because they want to downplay abuse.
The idea that she wanted it and knew what she was getting into is the go to "excuse" for adults who rape girls (and boys).

I've been cat called while wearing a hoodie and joggers, I've been catcalled while wearing a short skirt and fishnet tights, I've been catcalled in a basic summer dress, I've been catcalled while wearing literal pajama pants and a baggy shirt and finally I've been catcalled wearing my school uniform (long plaid skirt, blazer and a blouse all in a super ugly green vomit colour), I'm only 15.
The moral of the story is that no matter what women do they probably will be sexualised, so hell, wear wtf you want when you want. Just remember to stay safe and have/know some form of self defence. Pretty sad that young girls have to be taught this stuff to ensure that they're safe on the street. I have had a few boys in my class say sexual things to me. Most of the time they thought I would appreciate it, like in Animes. I don't want to see women disrespected anymore.

@@Insomnia19101 Ah yes, the old "no means yes" argument. Opposite of the "if he bullies you he secretly likes you!" trope. Sure, sometimes tsunderes exist, but they're rarer than media would have you believe. Most often when someone hates someone else there's no "secret love" behind it.
It's insidious. It's like women are automatically in love with any man they interact with! And not to insinuate that reason can stop feelings from occuring, but I assume this mindset comes with an assumption that women just. don't possess the former at all. Or more likely, that straight women are incapable of finding certain men unattractive (weird, since straight men seem to each have a lot of preferences... nothing wrong with that unless taken to the extreme, but it's a case of some guys somehow never learning that women are people with brains) and instead refuse their natural feelings. I wonder what the incel and manosphere groups have to say about that...
And don't even get me STARTED on how fucked up it is to turn "no" into "secretly yes" in a REAL LIFE SETTING. Almost as fucked-up as how sexualized (especially mandated) school uniforms make me concerned for future traumatizing events. And when you apply the existence of lesbians and asexual women to the issue, it somehow gets worse. Even if you're completely straight you don't deserve these men, and then they trick themselves into thinking girls who just straight-up aren't interested (sexually) in ANY man and treat them like a puzzle to solve. "When "I can fix her" becomes a threat!" Nuerodivergent historians can attest to the horror of that.
I myself had an experience with a jerk in high school (2019). We mutually hated each other and it was fine until one of the guy's bros (he had a group, I was friendless, i had short-ish straight hair and glasses, the vision he must've had of me was clear.) suggested that I was so antagonistic towards him because I was a tsundere. The idea caught in his head like fire, and it must've made perfect sense to him, considering literally no one else in the classroom would check him and his group on their behavior and concerning comments (including the teacher!) and several of his bros had somehow managed to get girlfriends by that time (poor girls...). I couldn't just, hate him for being a piece of shit, or if I did I would just suffer in silence like all the other decent people in school! I must've had some complicated feelings, I was a *challenge*.
Luckily I acted before I could get victimized. When I tell this story people assume I didn't actually act violently, since stories like that tend to fall into the realm of r/thathappened. I don't exactly have the documents to prove it, but I could probably find some record of how I was sent to the principal's office over it. I do remember how the other boys jeered, because I was behaving just like a tsundere. Violent physical assault of the one punch variety, basically silently saying "it's not like i like you or anything baka!" goddamn it. Can't even retaliate in this world.
I'm not sure if I made the right call there, and maybe don't take my story as good advice (especially if you live in an extra-hellish community where simply yet assertively telling a guy to stop catcalling you can end in you being murdered, that's real.), but I do know it was maddening existing in a school where all the loud kids were contributing to rape culture and everyone else were such levels of bystander than even *speaking* marked you as one of them. I still don't really understand what the hell was going on there (am autistic), all i know is i was afaik the one person who verbally called them out (until the physical attack) and because I was a woman, they didn't take me seriously. I was an unattractive, annoying bitch until the one boy suggested I was being coy, and then suddenly I was desirable. In neither perspective did my voice fall on functioning ears.
Moral of the story? When considering communication, a failure at least means there was an attempt. And I don't know about you but in a world where complete silence and allowance is the norm, I'd rather live/die knowing I said something.

One thing we discussed a lot in this class was how the advent of modern technology/transportation changed the way men and young women met with one another in the public space. In the late 1800s Japan started extensive construction of railroads and streetcars - mostly from 1870s-early 1900s. This meant that men could easily prey on schoolgirls who were taking the train because they usually had no one accompanying them. It's just really awful that *trying to get an education* singles you out as prey - pretty much globally across the board.

^ This! Honestly, when can you just spend a little time to educate your boys on this issue??? I'm not 100% certain, so take this with a grain of salt, but I feel as though crimes like this are a "self-control" issue, you know? Like, you didn't teach your son that women aren't objects to be used, and that you can just do whatever to them because they're a woman? This is so appalling. Just teach your kids and not say "boys will be boys" every time something like this happens. When they grow up with that in their minds, they're likely to assume that this is okay and it's not their faults for COMMITING THE CRIME and not having enough self control
Edit: I'm aware that not all parents neglect to teach their boys about respecting women, but I just wanted to clarify that I'm referring to those who don't.

You can’t teach “not to rape” men who rape do so knowing it’s wrong. I’m some cases, the fact that it’s wrong is why they do it. My girlfriend carries pepper spray, and when she can she wants to carry a gun. When you’re a petite girl you have to get a reality check and make sure you’re keeping yourself protected. Rape will happen as long as men exist so instead of telling men that rape is wrong (we know, we rape rapists in prison) you could figure out how to keep yourself from being a victim because in the end the only person responsible for you is you. I really hope is didn’t come off as callous or rude but it’s frustrating.

Long story short: Young girls and women are heavily critisized for everything they do by sociery. For instance, people were really weird about Wattpad because it used by young girls who were trying to write and discover themselves, or there is this tendency to make fun of intrests teenage girls have when there is nothing wrong with it. I clearly remember people harassing me while playing video games because i play cute girl charactes and they assumed i'm a girl and that made being awful and sexist okay. Or i always felt ashamed of myself because i'm not pretty, i never tried to dress up or look pretty because it makes you a shallow/stupid girl. It makes you ''like other girls''.

@@kittykittybangbang9367 It's such a huge issue. This is just one example, but I was in the BTS fandom for years since the early days, and the assumptions from media & the public were SO intensely stereotyped because of the image of a 'boyband' with female fans. Like it was just impossible for people to accept there could be anything worthwhile about the music, because they saw it as 'aimed at girls'. They couldn't accept it was possible fans could like them for any reason other than having a crush or mindlessly 'bopping along to bubblegum pop'... For years and years the mostly female fanbase were desperately trying to get the media to actually listen to their albums, read the lyrics and take them seriously. We pushed that aspect as a fandom SO hard, always bringing it back to the music and lyrics at every opportunity when we spoke to media, but article after article would come out like "teen girls are just crazy about this boy band! Which one's the cutest, girls? Which one's the bad boy?"
There was one article in a major music magazine where the journalist actually did read some translated lyrics. And do you know what he said? "It's probably a good thing the fans don't understand Korean, because I hardly think teenage girls would be interested in politics and social commentary." Literally this was printed in a major publication in like 2019 without a trace of irony. As if fans didn't spend hours pouring over lyric translations, as if we didn't discuss the lyrics constantly. As if lyrics weren't the no. 1 reason given for being a fan in large online polls.
Then, when they finally started getting well known in the West and the barriers about 'kpop' being only for teenage girls started to be broken down a little bit, we started to get a lot more male fans joining......... and let me tell you the DIFFERENCE in how media treated them and their opinions was outrageous. Literally all these articles by 'serious' male critics like "did you know, there are actually men and boys who like this band??? Well that caught our attention and made us take a closer look, and it turns out the music is actually... good?? And they write it themselves? And wait, the band members are men too, so... maybe this could be... art???" While the female fans who'd been there for 7 years at this point were at the sidelines like "THIS IS WHAT WE'VE BEEN SAYING THIS WHOLE TIME" 😭

i hate how anime has sexualized japan. i'm half-japanese, and whenever i come across a gross comment saying, "oh, i want to go to japan because there's going to be anime girls plastered in every store window and waifus walking down the streets" i want to gag. no. just, no. i've been to japan multiple times, and anime is SPARSE there. honestly, i think americans like anime more than actual japanese people. also, most of japan's population is old people. most japanese people are very polite and modest; the total opposite of the "waifu" fetish that people think is infested in japan. yes, we have kawaii culture, but i've never once seen it displayed in any sexual way. so much of japan is nature and tradition and culture. i just hate the "asian girl" stereotype and how men think it's okay to fetishize and sexualize it when the reality is far from the warped western perception of a country that is all about culture, honour and modesty.

Even though the sailor scouts all wear short skirts there are no panty shots whatsoever which is super rare even for anime that isn’t focused on fanservice. I fit the Asian women stereotype, and that made me targeted to being openly sexualized than women from other races.
Don’t belittle my experience because you do not know what I had to endure. It wasn’t just being sexualized, it was also bullying by being a minority and a woman in a school who barely has Asians.

this conversation was ALSO about mangakas who purposefully draw clearly underage characters only to say theyre 4000 years old JUST so they can sexualize them. THAT is weird, and if you disagree then THAT is the problem.

I unfortunately have a close male relative that was a pedophile (he viewed but from what Im aware didnt assault anyone)... and I grew up seeing images and didnt understand what I was seeing until I was an adult. Even if I didnt understand it,it made me think young girls had to look a certain way to please older men. Really f'd me up and I had depression, eating disorder, and self harm from tween age and up. I don't mention this for pity. Im 35 now and did years and years of therapy. I am a Mom with two girls now. My point is I feel like young Japanese school girls being depicted this way in anime and media could have had serious mental health consequences on many Japanese girls/women. Same goes to any media sexualizing minors. So sad. It is a subject close to my heart. Thank you for covering it. People think nudity in minors is what attracts pedophiles... the truth is ( from what I saw) even modestly covered children will be seen as sexual beings. So they may get more gratification from the fantasy of more revealing clothing, especially if they've been fantasized, but the sexual desire came before the clothing. I hope if anyone reads this, and they are blaming the clothing for pedophiles behavior… Just know that the clothing isn't the issue… It may enhance the sexual urges but it definitely is not what created it. pedophilic tendencies came before any sort of reveling or fetished clothing. I know {people} like to women and girls for bad habits of men so this is why I wanted to bring it up.

The depression and isolation men face and not being able to talk about it is debilitating. I was molested by a woman age 25 when I was 19 and got laughed at by both men and women, especially women because she was moderately attractive, and they couldn't fathom a man being molested. The point I'm trying to make is making this seem like a one-sided issue helps no-one, not men or women and just makes honest men feel worse.

It's also really sad, that "classic Japanese comedy" which you can find in animes is mostly about sexual harrasment women and young girls face. I'm also tired about showing anime girls as caricatures with unnatural voices and behaviors, which are suppose to be "kawaii", really that's why I hate most of female characters. They've mostly been written as big boobbed cringey mascots for basic male oc. Of course it's not only anime thing, but I''ve seen it mostly there. It's just sad. I hope it will change with time, I really hope ,because I want to FINALLY watch women and girls in anime as real humans with normal voices and behaviors.

My god, the amount of hypocrisy in those scenes
Going back to the infantilised part, i hate how it's done with every character. In another manga i read (forgot the name lmao) there's the powerful woman. Shes strong and rich but portrayed as a snobbish brat. The only good this people will like about her is her body
I hate how these female characters are constantly teased and insulted. Im sure youve heard of men talking down at a woman who holds higher status and power by calling her a brat, princess, missy, etc. Can we please have strong, powerful women who arent like this?

Its usually just a button up shirt with a pleated skirt (summer) which I think you would see a lot in high school animes, but actually each and every school has a variation of uniform. it can be dresses even. Also a lot of people here wear uniforms simply for fashion, you dont need to be in school to wear a white shirt, ribbon tie and a pleaded skirt. One thing I will note is that uniforms in japan are basically manditory everywhere, while in the west usually only private schools have them. Its really normal to see a schoolgirl in japan in one of the uniforms, foreigners are sometimes surprised by that for some reason. So here's a tip! I've found Common Sense Media and the parental guide section of IMDB super helpful! There you can find a list of anything that may be iffy for a kid (swearing, violence and of course sexual content) and see what you may or may not be comfortable with before deciding to watch. @@extrashotofespresso_ I think more points could be made here: Euphoria is unfortunately very romanticized, with all of the great aesthetic choices and stuff. In my opinion tho it was supposed to put that type of lifestyle in a bad light. Riverdale on the other hand is a whole different kind of disturbing: a 16 year old or something, a literal teenage girl stripping in front of a whole bar of grown men *and nobody says a thing or find it disturbing?* How was that a good idea?

I feel like Euphoria did try to paint what was going on with teens and drugs and abuse in a bad light. I think weve all known teens going through something but a lot of their peers don’t know the severity of it or how to handle these mental health struggles, well bc they’re young and still learning. But I think it’s good to kinda not censor and to shed light on the fact that this stuff does happen and honestly I’d say quite often, from my personal experiences, especially for those growing up in communities where gang violence and financial struggles is prominent. I think it’s good to make teens more aware of the fact that someone could be the way they are because of what’s going on at home and like you know avoid bullying and judging and just not promoting or justifying harmful predispositions about them. But it is really important in the way it is executed in tv shows so as not to romanticize it, but then again people interpret everything differently.

I learned how badly women and girls are sexualized at an extremely young age, it made me develop a big fear of men and boys. When men approach me I tense up and my breathing intensifies to a point where it hurts, this fear also made me feel self conscious of what I wear.

i hated all anime and japanese media for years because of these depictions, my boyfriend finally showed me that not all of it is so sexualized like this, but this has been something that has bothered me for quite some time. Thank you for this video!

Men will say I want an anime gf than sexualize girls who wear socks and wonder why they don’t like them.
Get out of your parents basement, stop calling girls you rlly want “snowflakes” or “posers” quit hugging your body pillow and go find a girl who you will respect, love, cherish, care for, and *NOT* sexualize. 🙄🖐

The sexualization of school uniforms is so disgusting, and it's so prevalent it's scary. When you mentioned the Britney Spears mv I was reminded of Rebelde, the mexican TV series in which the girls' uniforms looked more like Halloween costumes (the girls wore knee-high high-heeled boots as uniform, ffs). The fact that that was targeted to CHILDREN is mind-boggling (yes, the music slaps, but STILL)

OMG YES the uniforms in Rebelde were so so so bad. I still remember all the posters with the highly sexualized poses and those terrible uniforms...

@@cmyep3310 the worst part was that, even though the intended audience was teenagers (which is already bad enough, you shouldn't sell an hypersexualized version of adolescence), many *CHILDREN, as in TWELVE AND UNDER* were also watching it, and everyone thought it was ok?? There were TELEVISED COVER BAND COMPETITIONS, WITH YOUNG CHILDREN DRESSED AND PERFORMING LIKE THE CHARACTERS
