In China, everyone is complaining they are not thin enough, not pale enough, not rich enough, not tall enough, not hot enough, not young enough, not smart enough etc. And Chinese judge each other constantly. If you think this is good, that girls should judge their weight constantly, and that mentality is attractive, just remember they are also judging your wallet, your height, your education all the time too.

@@thomasmaier7053 There's a condition that affects only women called lipoedema (also spelled lipedema). I didn't know I had it when I was a 47 kg teenager, but a female classmate once asked me "why I are skinny from the waist up and chubby from the waist down". I honestly didn't know. I asked my mum and at that time there was the "pear shape" theory. Now those skinny arms turned huge. It's officially lipoedema. My BMI is slightly overweight. I eat super healthy, 1300 k/c day, vegetarian. I am a bit sedentary due to treatment resistant major depression and PTSD, but even if I exercised enough to lose those 8 kg extra, those huge thighs and buttocks and now new huge upper arms wouldn't change. When I was a pre-teen (early 2000s), I created a thinspo blog & really followed the lifestyle. Went through a long journey of crash dieting, fasting, purging, diet pills (esp the infamous phen-phen), fad diets, bullimia- everything. Im still friends with some of the girls that subscribed to my blog & we laughed about how weight obsessed we were when in reality we looked great back then. It was the early 2000s though, skinny was really in & my favorite super lowrise jeans. Back in those days, your upper-mid class parents sent you to fat camp if you were a little pudgy. (I went for two summers)
My ex pro-ana girls remember those ridiculous mantras:
"Nothing tastes as good as how it feels to be thin" "A touch [of food] on the lips is 10 pounds on the hips"
"Waking up thinner, is worth going to bed hungry"
    "Hunger hurts but starving WORKS"
"Because the pain of looking in the mirror (or on the scale) hurts more than starving"
I could write a book. Teens, dont do this. Now Im in my 30s with stomach acid issues & an out of whack metabolism. Just eat healthy and exercise. Plus the weight loss from starving isn't permanent.

My metabolism is so out of whack now, I could starve myself all day and eat a boiled egg, and still put on weight 😅 You have to eat and exercise, guys. Simple as that. Fuel your body, don’t go crazy, but treat yourself so you don’t feel like life is all about suffering. It’s okay to accept yourself at all stages. Only you should decide what’s best for you.

In the United States, starvation deaths are rare, China also has low starvation deaths. Obesity causes about 300,000 deaths yearly in the U.S. due to related health issues. In China, over 1 million deaths each year are linked to obesity-related conditions as obesity rates rise. In conclusion, most people worry too much about being too skinny and not enough about being too fat, and in the end it kills them.

So true! In the Minnesota Starvation Experiment, which studied the best rehabilitation diet for people who have suffered from starvation, the participants became extremely preoccupied with food, so much that three individuals went on to become chefs and one went into agriculture. In the study, they mention that food became the focal point of conversations and some participants began reading cookbooks and collecting recipes. One man even collected over 100 cook books during the experiment.
I still suffer from an ED myself, and I'd say 30%+ of my thoughts surround food and preparing it. This is sadly a lot higher when I'm trying to restrict my caloric consumption.

This is a huge thing also. I was made fun of, picked on, everything you can name just for being naturally skinny. I have a fast metabolism. Plus I'm tall, my body is mostly 65% legs. My doctor pretty much said, I could be tapping my finger and burning off everything I ate. I could eat and eat and eat and I was never "good enough" for others. My mom's friends actually started questioning her to ask if I was maybe anorexic, which I'm not but she swore up and down I never ate when I did. She knew I did! But then again she never sees what I do for her anyway, it's always she's right and everyone else is wrong. I've seen it like in real time how she denies and makes things up on the spot, and it's amazing how delusional a person can be. It's flabbergasting. Anyways, having to deal with that for years, and still dealing with it is maddening.
The on the flipside, I gained a little bit of weight because I got older it's natural plus I eat a little bit more than I used to because I workout and I don't like being hungry. I'm not a size 0 anymore, I'm like a size 3-4 depending on the fabric of clothing and the clothing brand and store it comes from. And my dad (67), who won't admit he has an eating disorder and is obsessed with being under 120 pounds. The weight in his 20s and teen years. He will turn around and start calling me fat. And that's maddening too!
I love food and love my body, I've gone through a crap ton of injuries and am thankful that it's carried me through every single one of them, but I'm super athletic and have always been considered a tomboy. But if someone has a problem with MY body, now and forever, it says more about them than me. And that's sad, especially if they're a grown ass adult. Thinking about all the damn girls I grew up with who picked on me for being skinny, my mom, and just whoever else, it's still makes me grit my teeth and gets on damn nerves how disgusting humans can be that they have to attack someone else about their weight because it's not to THEIR standards.

Your right! This is an interesting subject, especially from a psychological perspective.
The funny thing about "cultural beauty standards" is that they tend to exist solely within the mind of the beholder. It's a projection of one's own personal insecurities or a side effect of an inferiority complex.
I guess at the end of the day people just find it easier to blame society for having "unrealistic" standards then to look in a mirror and admit that they are failing to live up to their own, personal, unrealistic standards.

And I vividly remember the first time this happened was when I was only 7 years old. It didn't stop there and as I grew older, the words began to leave even more scars.
I eventually started to only eat once a day when I was in 8th grade and if I could estimate, my meal portion was less than 500 worth of calories. This lasted until the end of 9th grade when I opened up to my current friends(I only met them that same grade). And I honestly am grateful I did because after hearing what I went through, they made sure to help me regain my confidence and helped me go back to a healthy lifestyle. They didn't have to help me but they made the choice and for that, I owe them very much
Nowadays, I just eat what I want, whenever I feel the need to do so although I do avoid certain highly processed food and fast food when I can(indulging in them once every few months). I mean, our staple food here is steamed bread (steamed with flour). I don't understand why someone chose this girl to shoot videos. Whether fat or thin, her appearance is not a popular type in the whole China. If the time goes back 3000 years, You will see that there are dozens of different races in China, including short blacks and so on. Many people see on the Internet that some Chinese people eat dogs or snakes, even mice, and human placentas. These eating habits are almost only in Guangdong Province. The differences between different places are huge. My skin color is whiter than some Westerners. The average height of our local area is 1.78m, while Guangdong, Fujian and other southern areas may be only 1.68m, Most Chinese immigrants overseas also come from these regions. Some people who do not know China often confuse filters with surgery and eating habits.

I used to lease student apartments at UT Austin and we had Chinese exchange students come for the summer. Every single one of their apartments had a scale in the kitchen (to weigh themselves) and a small food scale on the counter where they weighed out rice, etc. this was 10 years ago. The ability to be thin and controls one weight in their culture shows the ability to use self control, and other amiable traits in their culture. I’ve met so many Asian women who face extreme scrutiny about their weight. In American culture body standards ebb and flow but being thin has always been “in” just masked when we add things like BBL’s and implants. Ultimately the standard in most first world countries is to stay thin because food is plentiful. Whereas third world countries where food is scarce the body standards seem to be much more lax or based off of looking healthy and muscular. I grew up with 90’s Kate moss “heroin chic” weight being in. I developed an ED as did a lot of my peers and I am curious to see where culture leads as Gen Z seems to be more accepting of their bodies (not everyone but a decent amount compared to young millennials). Sadly women will always be held to a more rigid standard then men, as dad bods come into fashion and a man can look like a body builder or have a dad bod or extra meat on his bones and still be considered attractive. we see this in Hollywood and in our everyday lives. As someone who lost her health due to an ED and being hospitalized due to one, it’s not worth the Long term damage to your body. But having an ED isn’t about weight, it’s ultimately about being able to control something in your life wether it is your food or your weight.
Sorry for the Ted Talk. Just my two cents.

Asians having smaller frames imo is a myth. yeah they might be smaller than Black women and some Europeans but they're not as tiny as people expect and claim them to be. Perhaps diet is part of the reason. when I was a teenager ik this Chinese girl who was born and raised in the west and was a few years younger than me. well she was about 5'4 and not as skinny as these girls. she wasn't necessarily pudgy, but neither was she as skinny. she had a soft body (what Jennie from Blackpink looked like predieting basically) and in fact she was larger in size and statue than me - someone who's considered white and if there's any asian blood in me it's minuscule. for Europeans who're non-mixed esp from certain parts like nordic countries or Eastern European, they do tend to have larger frames (esp height). but generally it's not the standard imo. bc for ex, while lots of ladies in US are taller on average it's not the case here in canada. For reference I weighted 50kg at my skinniest, so that's very slim thighs and bony type of skinny arms. I've met other Asians, from Koreans to Chinese, some from asia others western-born or raised, and majority were larger than me (partly bc they were also taller). Nobody is born skinny we have to eat certain way to be skinny. so these Chinese girls aren't just thin effortlessly but through conscious eating and persistent exercise regimes.

its true. online shopping is probably the most popular way for chinese people to shop for clothes, recently there was a post about clothes that a girl had bought where the seller apparently covered the original sizing label (S in the video) with a new one that accidentally peeled off (L). The size charts are also absolutely wild, like L sized pants with a 60cm waist circumference. people also talk about the ridiculousness of buying womens fashion items and having them arrive so small that it wouldnt even fit their kid siblings. Literally corner of society feeds on making women hate on their bodies, this isnt just a social media phenomenon (although social media definitely accelerates it) or a marketing strategy for dietary products, but a case that countless industries capitalize from.

I think that, like everything else, balance is key. We should not encourage people to be unhealthy thin neither accept obesity.
And always be aware that some people will never be within the standard health boundaries for x or y reason.
Sometimes we rush to judge people for how they look without knowing if they have gained weight because of pregnancy, are fighting a disease or disorder, have a hormonal imbalance, have an injury that makes it hard for them to stay in shape, etc.
Yes, we should encourage a healthy weight as well as not accept extreme and unhealthy body shapes. But always be understandable that we don't know what other people are going through and is always better to give our support instead of our hate to help those people improve their health and if possible their weight/body shape.

China is pushing it to the extreme but, in all, fairness, the obsession and focus on the body’s aesthetics beyond what is healthy, in whatever direction, is a tale as old as humanity, it’ll never disappear.
I was headed down that route as well, my saving grace was competitive running.
I’m not saying that it’s the perfect solution but it completely changed my relationship to my body. Now, my body and I have to work together to perform well, I cannot afford to starve myself or neglect my body’s needs or else I’ll notice it with a drop in performance right away. Aesthetics became sort of an afterthought. My body is my own little machine that works hard, and only well oiled machines work well.

Asian women have rounder fuller face and tend to store fat easily in the face and overall body especially arms and belly.
Whereas caucasian women (typically russian and northern europe) can be thin and slim while being in good health. (being taller helps a lot on proportion since asian women are shorter and thus appear proportionally bulkier).
The thing is that the healthy body fat range is different on avg for asian women and caucasian northern europe women.
Its all about genetics and proportions. You could be 90 lbs (40kg) and still look fat cuz of your proportions and body fat distribution. Asian women store more fat in the face , belly and arms whereas as caucasian (north europe) women store more in the hips, thigh, and b reasts (that's why the average cup size is D or larger in europe and AA in asia).
Asian girls are not fatter they just store it in different places.
3:34 is the perfect exemple of looking fat while being a very low weight. She has no double chin but her wide face and proportions makes her look chubby.
Conclusion: have realistic body goals standards depending of your race. It's like african women wanting to have caucasian or asian hair, just never gonna happen. Same goes for body fat.

Now, looking back at those photos, I was not as fat as they made it seem as I was actually in the best weight and form (I guessed because of my natural chubby cheeks that they called me fat for that, while the rest of my body was actually fit and slim). This greatly impacted my current state and I finally became super obesed, plus metabolism imbalance due to age and hormones as I work in shifting schedule. The pandemic made an impact too and being at home made me start gaining weight rapidly.

This is so sad! It's sad how Chinese society only cares about a person's appearance and thiness is equated to popularity and beauty. Unfortunately it's not only Chinese society. I'm half Polish and in Poland being thin is still associated with beauty. Whenever I go to Poland I'm sick of people telling me that I've lost or gained weight. Most body shaming comments have been from Polish people and the majority of them hardly in great shape themselves! I was a healthy weight for my size (75kg and 172cm) and told I should be 55kg! A lot of my mum's Polish friend's granddaughters have anorexia. It's not surprising. Anorexia is definitely on the rise in Poland. I'm glad that by British standards nowadays I'm considered normal size.

Where is the fun of being a kid nowadays?
They suffer so so much because of social media.
They r slaves of selfies and pursuing someone else's body.
It breaks my heart to see them suffer so much.
Hard time for growing nowadays. hard times.

Social acceptance is hard-wired into human beings. To be excluded for any reason is devastating. We need to learn to love each other just for being human, just for being. Race, gender, orientation, body type, intellectual capacity, and on and on. We could spend the next ten centuries going through the list of differences, judging and excluding people on those superficial bases, or we could accept that difference is uniqueness and that nobody benefits from a society in which all of the members are exactly the same. Difference is the key to creativity. You cannot imagine possibilities without it. Where does the human race go on the strength of zero diversity? Backward. The Stone Age comes to mind. Where did we get our number system? Our alphabet? Our sense of Justice? Our determination? Our work ethic? Don’t tell me these are all products of Anglo minds. They’re not. If you don’t know this, you missed college. And THAT is what higher ed is good for: it makes the world personal (Cormac McCarthy).

A lot of people seem to judge how paleness is pushed on everyone in Asia and how they have those whitening creams. What people don’t seem to realize is that it’s the exact same in the West, just opposite. I have naturally extremely pale skin and am unable to tan because I just immediately get sunburnt and I can’t even count the number of times I’ve received negative or stupid comments because of it. “Are you ok? You look so pale (i. e. sick)”, “You look like a corpse”, “Do you never go outside?”, “You don’t look like you really went on vacation” “You’re so pasty, you really need to go to a solurium / go outside more”, etc. These are just some of the comments I have received countless times throughout my life because of my naturally very pale skin. And are self-bronzers really any different from whitening creams?

There’s a negative word “普信男” primarily used by female internet user. It literally means “man being ordinary and confident” and the usage is to attack man that is average on pretty much every aspect especially their appearance/stylishness/wealth/education while still feeling good and confident about himself. This is awful.

      @@Ninja-gt3zi It's a compound word.
      PU meaning 普通,ordinary.
      xin meaning 自信,confidence.
There isn't a single English term for it, the sentence provide in OP's comment is a good translation though. The connotation is that the man bearing the confidence is not worthy of his self-esteem, and that healthy self esteem for this man is arrogant to the point of a strong fault.

I have mad respect for the Zumba teacher. She's a prime example of how you should see yourself. She is definitely not fat. But not perfectly skinny either. She's healthy. Seeing her dancing and laughing in the end made me so happy. Thats real beauty! And remember its not about sizes or shapes. Its about balance. Eat healthy. Work out. Take care of your body ! Its the only one you have. Be happy .

What a horrible phenomenon. That collarbone coin challenge like what the actual fvck!? The tragic thing is all the women in the this video looked beautiful the way they were prior to the crazy weight loss. Words of wisdom at 13:30, now look at her, shes stunner! She does not need "thinspo". Social meda disease has no doubt pressured these young people into this. But the big one as mentioned by the girl at 13:30 is Chinese society. Judge judge judge on everything and everything. There is no escape and no one will be happy. What a miserable way to spend this ONE life that we have. I hope people snap out of this nonsense.

As a fat person who has suffered with PCOS symptoms since I was 11, when I first arrived in China I was so taken back. People in the street just straight-out called me ugly and pig. I’m glad that I’m so thick-skinned and know my worth past my weight. My students said it was ‘because fat people are seen as greedy and rude’ but said that knowing me changed their perspective of fat people. You’ll realise being around Chinese people for less than 5 minutes that the most used words are 好看 good looking,不好看 not good looking,美 beautiful ,丑 ugly. Everything is quantified in how it looks. Extremely judgemental society, especially with young women. I can separate myself from it, maybe because I’m a foreigner and I’m not integrated into the culture to an extent. But I really feel for many young Chinese women who are brought up with this pressure.

@Anna I had started my menstrual cycle at 10 years old, and immediately had some hormonal imbalances and PCOS symptoms. The biggest symptom was very fast and unexpected weight gain and abdominal pains. I wasn’t properly diagnosed until a few years after because my doctor thought I was too young to have it, but lucky me (or unlucky me I guess haha). There isn’t enough research and knowledge on it.

It's way more important to be healthy than to be thin. How many of these skinny Chinese women could actually run a mile in 10 minutes? There are many skinny people with a high body fat percentage and have a body that's not functional. It's way better to put on a little muscle, get out there and walk every day, maybe run 2-3 times a week and lift weights twice a week. Eat in moderation and whatever the result is, you'll be healthier and have a functional body. The outrageous trends, like can your waist fit behind a sheet of paper are just driving people mentally insane.

It's sad what beauty standards do, in one society it's better to be big/fat, in one curvy, skinny/thin, one tall, short, muscular, light, tan, or dark and many more. It's all damaging, people would go to extreme like these women in the video, it's not good. Their mental health must be so bad. I had a ED at 11 because I wasn't happy (childhood trauma) and also wanted to be thin like these woman/girls. It made me super sick, every day being fixated to be skinnier when my body can't anymore. Simple things will eventually be hard for me to do because you run on reserve energy and when that is over you just feel like dying. As of today, it's still not away even though eating normally is possible, avoiding mirrors and weighing secretly is still my daily routine. I just gave up on myself in doing these things because my genetics are not meant to be the way I wanted to be. You will never be happy, so I feel for the ones who live like this.
So much respect for Popo for normalizing talking about ED's in a society like hers. I'm glad she realized how bad it became. She really is a good person for being a light for many girls who maybe not know what it is and are going through it.
