I really like the video but I think you missed one point - Jenna is VERY pretty. Was she not that gorgeous and looking less socially acceptable she wouldn't be such a hit. That's why a lot of people can relate to her being weird and an outcast but they did not receive the same treatment - if you are not in the beauty standards you are treated worse. Sad but true, pretty privilege is real

And that just doesn’t sit well with me

THIS. Is kinda interesting to have our personal style becoming suddenly "trendy" among the same people that look bad at us, criticize and dispize our preferences.
It just shows how most people have no personality or critical thinking. They fall so easily for Idols and embrace a whole aesthetic concept when it is well promoted (Wednesday sells the "boss girl" fantasy) until another imagery fad comes in and they go back in hating what is "exotic".

While Wednesday is confident and antithetical to a lot of pop cultural norms for young girls and women- I think a major reason why her character is so popular and so compelling is because she does fit one of the most important norms in larger society. She’s pretty and thin. If all of her character traits remained the same but she was played by an average or unattractive actress- I don’t think she’d be viewed nearly as cool or aspirational to most as she currently is. While her beauty doesn’t present in pink and glitter- it is still an obvious form of beauty- one that ticks off multiple boxes in the euro beauty standard- young, thin, white/ fair skin, symmetrical face.

Ooh I'm in the minority here. I'll explain why. I don't think it's a love triangle at all. I think Tyler consciously manipulated her and very successfully so. Everybody in the comments praises Wednesday for being "above it all". This is again something I disagree with. She makes a good show of acting this way, but any human being craves attention, Wednesday is no exception. Tyler seems to know it and manipulates her well. Most likely he's also getting pointers from Cristina Ricci's character, though I wish it was shown. With Xavier...that one is infatuated, but I don't think it's mutual, so in the end...it's not really a love triangle. It's calculated manipulation from Tyler and a rather annoying infatuation from Xavier...

As a goth and generaly outcast I can atest that and never believed in this "love" for the weird ones. The shy and weird character are just loved in books/movies because they are always acompanied by a set of highly desirable charscteristics (beauty, super powers, being "naturally" high achiever etc) making them actually "superior" in social hierarquy.
Also, the whole narrative force people to see beyond the "weirdness" and stereotypes by focusing on the character, something that doesn't have a chance to happen in real life since people reject others very fast when they don't fit in.

Some interpretations of her character as a Neuro-divergent person make sense and do her character more justice than the "I'm not like other girls" trope.
ND twitter also pointed out that if Wednesday acted the way she did in real life, she wouldn't be considered a badass but more of a loser. Again, Wednesday remaining indifferent to it because her priorities in life are very different than people her age.

She's cool and aesthetic but there's probably a lot of trauma underlying (this backstory I made up could be projection though). When talking about this show, people constantly shows the scenes closer to Ortega's face, centered, like she is the only person you see when you enter a room.
With this obsession about Wednesday appearance, can we really say that people dream about not caring about others opinion? Or rather that they dream to make people obssessed with them by having the same confidence that Wednesday have? I think that we dream about giving the APPEARANCE of not giving a f, and to watch people be obsessed with us. But liking even the thought of that makes us automatically care about what others think about us, making it impossible to really be like Wednesday. She is always so pretty, aesthetically pleasant to look at (clothes, makeup, etc), but I'm pretty sure we wouldn't care in the same way if she was a conventionally "bad looking" girl in black sweatpants with greasy hair having a quiet panic attack in her dorm because she is forced to share her space with a person she doesn't know.

When I was 16 I was highly depressive. I had the worst social anxiety, and was just angry at the world - I despised everyone and everything and of course, myself. I knew the 90s-Wednesday, which my family used to draw similarities to me. On one side, I felt a bit connected to her because I REALLY didn't want to be liked by people because I was scared they would leave me. On the other hand, I didn't want to be her, because that meant being "different" - and I hated it. It's all a paradox.
Now I'm 28 years old, mentally stable, in a relationship, and doing a full-time job (which at 16 I thought I would never achieve).
Watching Netflix's Wednesday today just made me fall in love with Jenna Ortega's impeccable acting and her own identity, giving the new Wednesday such a brilliant touch. I love seeing Wednesday today as a strong, independent woman who goes her way without having the need to appeal to anyone (+ the sarcasm is just cherries on top). I think, instead of trying to be her, we should all embrace our own Wednesday as independent human beings, not relying on others' approval. However, being socially cold is not fun.
BTW: People trying to be Wednesday today just reminds me of the Yandere-Girl epidemic on TikTok ... pls make it stop and care for your own character to make the best version of yourself.

The "i'm not like other girls" situation is just another way to shame girls for liking things. I'll admit I do relate to Wednesday in some ways, but not a lot of ways too! I can be dark, and I can be light! I can be sad, and I can be happy! I am a human being. I shouldn't have to conform to anything I don't want to, and I shouldn't have to be labeled a "pick me" just because I have my personality. I have always h@ted the "I'm not like other girls" situation because it puts girls in a box that is hard to get out of. The idea that you are either "normal" (whatever that is) or "other"(anyone you don't like) is outdated, and should be eradicated.

this is just like how many people, including me, used to get bullied years and years ago for being into anime. to them, it’s dumb until someone conventionally attractive comes and makes it a trend. i, and many others here, have dressed darker and been into darker things, and it’s so much better to be into those interests and not have to feel a need to hide it. it’s not bad for people to find new hobbies, but it’s not nice when people are only into it to “look good to others” or because it’s a “trend”.
i also don’t like the autism head cannon because she wouldn’t be very good representation. yes even i see autistic traits in her, but she uses people for selfish reasons and doesn’t think of how they’d be affected, and personally myself and other autistic friends, aren’t like that at all. more like schizoid disorder

i think that autism representation is a similar problem to the lgbt community (coming from someone whos in both). people have deemed things not good representation if the person is presented with flaws. i dont think this is means the representation isnt good.
even if you and your friends dont relate, i actually did. she reminded me of my sister (who is also autistic) with the same "selfish" characteristics. this doesnt mean they are bad people, or necessarily that it comes from a place of true selfishness (at least intentionally). autism is a spectrum and there are degrees in which people express themselves as well as process things :) there are also many symptoms, and not considering how it would affect others over something deemed more of a priority is equally as possible as completely putting others before yourself. and neither are correct as to say if you are autistic or not
all this is just to say that i think its a good headcannon because it represents obvious traits as well as traits some people will find socially unacceptable. i think sanitising these traits are more detrimental, and it is nice to see these traits that you can feel guilty for ("why cant i just care about people more ? why am i like this ?") and still know that despite this you can be loveable and find genuine connections !
(i also dont want this to sound like im invalidating, being condescending or attacking you ! i hope this comes across as friendly discussion as i am interested in what other people think of the autism headcannon)

    • @v_bunny
      @v_bunny ปีที่แล้ว +18

@@justtrash6673 that makes sense too! i definitely see your side :} it’s good hearing other people’s perspectives, bc yeah autism is a massive spectrum. my fear comes from people assuming everyone with autism is that way, and yeah absolutely same as lgbtq+ representation (also in both, so hell yeah for us lol). it’d be great to see more diverse representation like abed from community, bc he’s stellar. i’ve also seen NT people get defensive when people head cannon wednesday to be ND, which i do get upset about. the second ND people want representation, whether it’s cannon or not, NT people get mad bc they’re afraid of relating to someone on the spectrum. at least that’s what i’ve seen.
but you’re right, representation is good regardless of flaws, as long as they aren’t portraying the character as a stereotype or just blatantly false (like sia’s movie)

Being alternative or goth, meant you were alternative to things that were mainstream. Now being alternative is the new trend and the new norm. So it's difficult now a days to weed out people that are trying so hard to be alternative just by looking at them. It becomes quite easy however, after having a conversation with these people about music, or their interests. Then you realize that they're only "alternative" because it's trendy, and they have zero personality.

Wednesday shows many signs of being on the autism spectrum, which I am also on, so I could fully relate to that. After watching the show, I felt inspired to embrace more of that side of myself and not try so hard to mask to “fit in.” I’m naturally deadpan and monotonous like Wednesday, and I adore her subtle makeup look which makes a ghostly appearance more attractive (my eye bags can finally benefit me). the sudden, widespread admiration of wednesday addams, and the desire to be just like her, in my opinion, comes from the fact that the is different, while at the same time comical (maybe not intentionally), pretty, popular, confident and, most importantly, widely accepted. thus it is understandable that many people would wish to be in a somewhat similar situation, given societal and peer pressure is what it is presently. i absolutely agree with what you’re saying here about the pick-me mentality: a desire to fit in, but at the same time stand out and be appreciated as an individual.
the problem comes with the fact that she has clearly been portrayed as someone with asd, and as someone with an alternative style. it’s all very well loving the show (i’ve been watching it on repeat), and her character, but when the vast majority of people meet someone part of a subculture or on the spectrum, the admiration and adoration is suddenly vastly diminished. nt people trying to copy mannerisms etc. somewhat takes away from the efforts a great many neurodivergent people make to help cope with life in a predominantly nt society.
as a nd person myself, these points are what i find most frustrating.

I've always loved Wednesday Addams. I've been told that we have similar personalities, (we are both female INTJ's), but that doesn't mean that I try to be her. I don't understand why can't they just appreciate characters, instead of adopting the characters as their personality simply because they are trendy.

Is it me or Wednesday AND Enid are literally me to an extend lol. I'm not exactly the Gothic type but I have a tomboy side and a girly side. Sometimes I wanna dress up in dresses and bright colors while some days I wanna dress up in dark solid pants and t-shirt. I struggled to pick a side throughout my life but just ending up doing both because why not. Yolo ig. 🤷🏽‍♀️😆

Wednesday is still a very typical "goth" antisocial outcast character, shes really no different despite jenna ortega's beautiful portrayal of her. She still follows the same cliche character arc, she's still thrust into the middle of weird situations even when shes not actively investigating and she still effortlessly grabs the attention of two boys that are somehow very into her despite her being very cold and aloof towards them. Theres nothing truly special about the modern Wednesday addams except for the work that jenna ortega herself put into the character

Honestly, I loved Bianca though. Initially thought she was just going to be the stereotypical mean girl, but then I had to look at things from her perspective. I realized I’m quite a bit like her, and loved seeing her character flesh out as the series went on. I love her, and I love that I share certain character traits with her. The same goes for Enid.

people just pick and choose the traits they want while completely disregarding the other ones. with wednesday, they want to dress alternative, to have a cool attitude, etc. but as a person who is actually that straightforward, monotone, unbothered, and has a similar sense of humor- the people who "want to be like her" are the same ones who make fun of these people irl. same with the goth fashion. its getting unbearable 😭

thank you so so much for this video. I've actually constantly been seeing this show, Wednesday Addams specifically, literally all around, everywhere and was really confused as to why it blew up (I haven't watched the series myself). Also love your explanation on how and who started it (your explanation on Charles addams) for those like me who haven't tried the show yet- I'm just always looking forward to your videos, Zoe!

In movies these mysterious personalities are considered cool.but in reality they are referred as nerds.

i honestly encourage ppl to follow trends. it helps them understand themselves, figure out what they like, etc. and i feel it’s healthy for younger ppl to do it esp. what i don’t encourage bullying ppl who are into something before it’s trendy. and tbh some ppl enjoy following trends and that is their personality. they’re open minded and eclectic. but again as long as they aren’t mean to ppl who don’t follow those trends or mean to ppl who like something before it’s trendy.

the most annoying problem i’ve been having recently is people thinking i’m trying to be like wednesday not just by looks cause i’m latina and lowkey have bangs and dress in a lot of black but also because i’m intrinsically antisocial and adorn a straight face so people who didn’t know me before the show came out think i’m the way i am in purpose as a copycat

I think this really is about her being absolutely stunning and very confident. Also, even though she dresses goth, it still looks comparatively mainstream and a lot of people agree that’s very pretty. She does weird things but she does them in a way that seems entirely natural.
Just my two cents but I believe the core of the issue why most people who are different in some way get picked on is because they’re kinda the opposite - sad but true (I’m neurodivergent myself).
