  • The AFL has expanded over the years, entering into all possible markets in the east and south of Australia...except for one. The nation's capital has long been neglected, and left abandoned by the football powers that be. In this video, The GAZ-man goes on location to tell the story of Footy In The Capital, and whether they actually should get the 20th Licence.
    To keep up to date with GAZ-man content, spend $100 million establishing a new franchise and partially relocate it to this link: / @thegaz-man

    7:13 Cannons actually made the NBL's first Grand Final in 1979, lost by a point to the um, St Kilda Saints.
    Those St Kilda Saints also won in 1980 against the West Adelaide Bearcats and decided to play in the Club World Cup rather than play finals in 1981, they never won a single finals game again. Eventually, they changed their name to Westside (in 87), then Southern Melbourne (in 1991), then merged with Eastside to form South East Melbourne (in 92) who won a couple titles, then merged with North Melbourne to become Victoria (in 98) then folded in 2004.
    The Cannons on the other hand moved to Newcastle in 2003 (after winning a few titles in the 80s) to become the Hunter Pirates, who were bought out by a Singapore consortium and moved to Singapore in 06 to become the Singapore Slingers, they still exist I guess but they're playing in the ASEAN league now.

      For mine, there simply has to be a team properly based in the nation's capital, for all major sports.

      As a kid playing all codes in the early 80s, the senior AFL competition was much bigger locally than the soccer, league or union comps. Saw plans from one consortium to do up the stadium. Was gutted when it didn’t happen a few times. Then the Raiders had some success, as did the Brumbies in the expanded union comp, and it was all over. 😢

    Raiders were officially in Queanbeyan (NSW) until 1989, the hone games were moved to Bruce (GIO) Stadium in 1990. The first Rugby League team to play in the then NSWRL outside of NSW was actually the Brisbane Broncos in 1988. Great video as always! I should add that the ACT defeated Victoria by 13 points in front of over 10,000 at Manuka Oval in 1980.
    Granted it was Victoria’s C side, but the Vics did have players like Barker, Turner, Blight, Neagle, Maclure, Dipper, Bourke etc. The ACT side had a lot of players that never played in the VFL, but did have Kevin ‘Cowboy’ Neale as captain-coach, along with Alex Jesaulenko, Ian Low and Paul Feltham.

      I'd hate to see Canberra miss out on a team, they've not only earned one but been promised one.
      Darwin though have shown that they can get 8-10 thousand to games, even with games hosted by a team based 3,000km away. The infrastructure to set up a team would take a while compared to Canberra, absolutely, and I totally respect that the ACT has already been served Victorian food with a 'made in Canberra' sticker on it. I just feel that NT needs a new team over a relocation more than Canberra.

    You have to come to Perth and talk about the third team..Get GAZ-MAN to fly you there. Options include Joondalup, Mandurah and SouthWest. I doubt the Swan Valley. There are a few issues. Joondalup (would be known as West Perth) have a parochial fan base, but the glory days of WAFL are well over and most people parochial about WAFL are aged 55 plus... So calling a team West Perth in Joondalup makes sense, but don't rely too much on WP fanatics jumping on board. Also there are a lot of poms and Springboks up there, so you'd need to develop a loyal fan base. Then you have Mandurah - Peel which is a fast growing region. But Mandurah is a sleepy town and doesn't get anyone much to their WAFL games. It loves footy, but they don't go to see footy. Also its 70km from Perth and optus stadium which would affect crowds. Plus it may hurt Freo's membership. Then you can choose South West Peel. Hae a team that combines Mandurah and Bunbury / Busselton. That would have a fan base. But problem is that it would still be different for Bunbury and Busselton people to travel to Perth and Mandurah. Everyone would drive to the game pretty much.

Plus it grows the game at a time that Rugby Union is struggling and kids are turning to soccer. AFL is very smart to increase their area. Plus so many Victorians are fleeing from Victoria into non AFL areas, its vitally important for the AFL to be in those areas, or you'll lose the fans and their families for ever. Meanwhile new immigrants are moving to Melbourne with zero interest in AFL. That is a massive error of judgement in Victoria not to force the beggar clubs like North and Bulldogs to step up and service those communities. • @thegaz-man
      @thegaz-man  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Your immigration/Victorians moving argument is a strange one, I'd like to see the numbers behind that one.
      While I agree that the current club funding model is unsustainable, susceptible to economic factors and somewhat uneven, any new team will require significant funding.
      As for talent, without a team to call its own (to help foster local talent, as has happened in Sydney and QLD which has significantly increased numbers of talented juniors), the NT has produced/raised 5 Norm Smith Medallists and no less than nine Premiership winners, just within the last 25 years, which for the population base is a remarkable rate, not to mention some of the most exciting and talented players ever seen. Establishing proper pathways in this area will only boost these numbers further, in addition to creating more opportunities for young Indigenous players to enter the game.
      I get that a lot of country areas have also produced talent at high rates, but the argument for putting football teams there is facetious compared to consistently ignoring a major city, and a state with two ready-made, AFL-quality stadiums ready to be used, which cuts down significantly on the amount of funding required.
      Admission price is also an odd argument, especially as the NT regularly has crowd numbers that are pretty close to GWS even without their own team to support.
      There are large logistical issues and cultural factors that would need to be addressed for the NT to be viable, I get that. However, I feel they are more deserving of a team, especially with their high percentage of people playing Aussie rules at local levels, than another expansion over the Barassi line, or a third team in already saturated markets.
