- In 1920, Vic Cumberland returned to St Kilda to become the oldestVFL/AFL player in history, at 43 years, 50 days old. For nearly 100 years, despite the evolution of athletes and the AFL, no one else joined him in the 40 Club. In this video, The GAZ-man goes through the five 38-year-olds to have played in the AFL era, to see if they too could have joined the one man to do what Vic did.

It's really funny because I had a period between about 2010-2022 where I just didn't watch any AFL. So imagine my shock when I see that Shaun Burgoyne - a man who I remembered watching be one of ports star players when I was a child - retired the year before I started watching AFL again.
Also Dustin Fletcher is a skinny legend. The fact that he needed to be rested so often but still made it to 40 despite being the most wirery guy I can remember in the AFL is superhuman.
Reckon I had the same feeling about Shaun Atley when he retired haha
Absolutely agree about Fletch, doubt we'll ever see another 40 year old in the AFL. Needs the exact right player and rest strategy to get there.
If Fletch was any bigger, his body would have worn down before time. He was perfect. I'd say he deserves immortality but in a way, he already got it.
Always a good day when gaz uploads
Ahh cheers, hope you enjoyed the vid!
My Grandfather who was a Hawthorn supporter during his life was a huge fan of Michael Tuck.
I could only watch old VFL tapes that he tapped back when I was a kid to know how important he was to the dominant Hawks sides of the 70s and 80s. Michael Tuck was considered to be the 2nd Leigh Mathews of the team and when Mathews retired at the end of 1985 season, that was when Tucky became stronger as an old veteran player.
From the highlights I've seen, Tuck seems a remarkable player - skinny, but tough as overcooked steak. Wore his heart on his brilliamt long sleeves. Excellent player, wish I could have seen him live in the flesh.
Another banger, keep it up gaz.
Thanks, you're too kind!
you’ll never guess which club, just outside the 8, Boomer Harvey had his 427th game to pass Michael Tuck against, whose stellar performance would help him virtually crush all hopes of finals.
Yep, and I was there. Pain.
Of course it had to be St Kilda haha
May have been a good thing in the long run? A win there and finals probably sees Richo keep his job - which means no Ratten, and maybe no Lyon?
@@thegaz-man I suppose - 2016 was a somewhat fun year to be a Saints supporter until that North game.
Also, it was a privilege to see the gimme-the-goose goal Harvey got for his milestone game sail over my head at the end of the game
Just think, if Ablett Junior didn't have his shoulder problems, he could have been playing at age 40 in May this year.
Honestly he could have played in a forward pocket for as long as he wanted. Posted really good numbers in that possie in 2019. Think isolation from his family during 2020 really got to him, as well as the shoulder. Deserved to play 400 games at least.
I was going to say "honorable mention to harry taylor" but I just checked and he's only 37 NOW. why did he seem so ancient to me in his last two seasons? he's barely 10 years older than me! and only 280 games too, boo, one more season might have got him to 300.
Taylor just seemed like the type of bloke who'd been around forever, such was his calmness under pressure, always a favourite of mine.
boomer was my favourite player (in a slightly obsessive way), was horrible him being forced into retirement when still playing so well
Sorry to hear that!
Boomer was always one of my favourites
I know the Os in the title are supposed to look like footballs but they have a real gimpy vibe...
🤣🤣🤣 can't say I've heard that one before!
Must be the size, they're big enough to look like a zip haha
@@thegaz-man this is your old mate handball Sam btw, maybe puts the warped sense of humour in context 😁
Could Pendles theoretically do it?
I don't wanna curse him like I cursed Nate Jones but if he plays 17 next year, that puts him on 400 at 36yo.
If he gets to 38 like Harvey, playing in a pocket/as a sub, I can see him getting to 435 with injury luck
How did Dusty Fletcher not have arthritis
Man could have had it, missed more than a few games in his time haha
Absolute hero
