  • If you've been following the channel, you'll know the AFL has evolved over the years, especially the athletes that play it. However, it's a sport that is extremely difficult to adjust to those who have lost the use of sight, hearing or limbs...until recently. Thanks to some dedicated individuals who've since partnered up with the League, people with disabilities can play a revised version of the game, which might well actually be more fun to watch.
In this video, Gaz introduces you to a sport that's very recently won his heart - Wheelchair AFL. Along with an explanation of its rules and a short history, Gaz also interviews Grant Leonard, South Australian state captain, to gain a greater understanding of the game, and to find out how you can get involved.

We used to play this all the time in the army. They had all they kit there due to amputed soldiers, but no one was using it, so we used to play wheelchair football for hours. Much better inside rather than the Darwin heat and humidity.

Really interesting video I’ve always followed Rugby Union as my main sport but love all contact sports. One sport which has had a great boost in the UK thanks to the rugby league World Cup is the wheelchair game. It was an excellent spectacle, the crowds were really up for it and the matches were intense. I love seeing mixed ability variations of sports and I hope promotion like this can keep people active and healthy in both body but more importantly mind. Love the videos on the history of Footy as growing up on the other side of the world has made the sport more of a curiosity but my aussie cousins are all big fans.

It's really great to see all-abilities sport take off like it has. Not only can it create really cool sporting codes, but it gives a much-needed outlet for the players involved.

I always wondered how they made Australian Rules work as a wheelchair sport. The handballing working as kicking is a really smart solution. Great video.

It's a really cool sport, would recommend checking out your local league!
I'm hoping to do more content on it in the future

A lot of credit must go to Kevin Faulkner for his hard work in setting the groundwork up for this code. Awesome to see the AFL and state leagues actively funding these programs too, feel like even 15 years ago it wouldn't have been considered.
