For me, there's a couple of things that must be said about this show. I've been listening to it on Nugs for nearly a week now. First, Goose is the only band that I've ever heard that can take a Christmas song and turn it into a song that I throw on repeat. The second stand out for me was basically the entire second set. The Pancakes and Rosewood to Trevor Poetry to Wysteria to Moby to Rockdale. I mean, are you serious? The entire show was really something else, but that second set. There were multiple times upon listening where I would just pause and walk out of the room to tell my mom, or sister, or my mom's secretary, anyone who was around basically, that they needed to come and listen to this, and I feel like I do that EVERY time I hear a new Goose show. The boys are absolutely cooking right now. Masters of their crafts. Love you guys. Happy Holidays everyone.

Everyone kept talking the 12/16/22 Rockdale so I had to check it out for myself. I was blown away - it is one of their best jams for pure shred, for moving through changes, for ear worms, chromatics, outside playing. There were so many techniques on display that I just had to try to better understand them so I could try to add them to my jams. Hope you enjoy this breakdown of their jam.
Analysis -----------
Goose jams by improvising paragraphs of 8 bars to create longer chapters. Each performer is improvising phrases that fit the feel of the 8 bars they are in. At the end of each 8 bar section they either try to signal others to follow them or try to pick up a signal.
Each of those 8 bar paragraphs fit into larger chapters of the jam. At the start of each chapter, the performers stay clear of the b3/3 of the chord they are outlining so as to leave open space. They stick on the 4, 5, and b7 as colorful tones without the additional major/minor tonality information. As the chapter progresses, they incorporate the 3 of the chord to make a more definitive statement. Near the end of the chapter they transition by sending out hints of where they are going next, usually using chromaticism, and higher intensity playing.
As the chapters of the jam progress, the intensity of the jam increases. The final chapter is a journey of tension and release. The performers hint the harmonic minor of the V chord in an 8 bar paragraph and release back to the I of the jam. Soon they hold on the V chord for multiple 8 bar paragraphs to ramp up the tension. The tension is continually built and released by going back to the I of the jam until the final tension is released by going back to the I of the main riff/verse.
The jam has 4 distinct chapters:
A short opening on Bb7 - the I chord of Rockdale
Move to F Aeolian, the minor V of Bb7 - with ear worms inspired by Crazy Train
Move to F MixoDorian shredding, basically every F7 trick in the book, introduce Bb the IV chord
Peak and release using C harmonic minor (the V/V of the Bb) to play off of F7
Here is my timestamped breakdown of how they achieve all of this weird and wonderfullness on the fly. All timestamps are from the youtube video and are approximate.
2:31:05 - Bb7 - the same chord as Rockdale's main riff. Sticking on the b7 of the Bb, not much of the 3 this early in the jam.
2:31:54 Start chapter 2 Rick lands on F7 - The V chord in the key of Bb. Still not much 3, focus on the F and Eb, the b7 of F
2:32:40 Start to incorporate the b3 of F. We are going F Aeolian.
2:33:00 Hint Crazy Train
2:33:45 outright play Crazy Train
2:34:05 emphasize the b5 and 6 of Fm
2:35:00 Hint F Harmonic minor
2:35:30 Start chapter 3 Walkup to F7 - we are now MixoDorian. Basically switch the Db (b6) for the D (6) and play the major 3
2:36:00 Emphasize b7 of F
2:37:00 Shred ear worms in F, build for a release
2:37:52 Pete plays Bb, the IV chord in F, this brings a small release
2:38:26 Hit Eb, the b7 of F, also the 3rd of Cm
2:38:28 C Harmonic Minor. Tension on the V.
2:38:51 Start chapter 4 Back to F7 but the Bb is firmly here
2:39:21 Pete starts hitting E. Its sort of F pentatonic/chromatic/space. Lots of F7 and major 7. Tension builds.
2:39:45 back to the F7 to Bb jam
2:40:00 Rick holds the b3 of Cm indicating a move to Cm, the V chord
2:40:06 Pete plays Cm and quickly moves to Eb major, the relative major. Rick plays Cm pentatonic/chromatic. Big tension now.
2:40:24 back to F7 Bb
2:40:40 Hit F to b3 to 4, a call back to the riff at 2:38:26 but in F
2:41:06 Rick moves chromatically up to the b5, everyone nails the b5 which moves chromatically down to Bb - Biggest tension, its the tritone.
2:41:20 Back to Rockdale Bb riff

Some years ago it was not hard to figure out that GOOSE will be playing SOLD OUT shows. They are SOLD OUT for 2023. CREAM always rises to the TOP. Also Kudos to GOOSE posting so many videos free for our enjoyment. These guys are not only representing the JAM scene but basically the Entertainment Live show World Tour scene. NUMBER ONE. !!!!!! for many many years to come NEXT all kinds of records and awards. Pray for the health and safety and that they get to see their families once in a while. GO GOOSE FOREVER. Rock and Roll Hall of fame here we come. GRAMMYs. Music awards. Music first, but they will become ROYALTY soon enough if NOT ALREADy.. Sir Paul from Beatles, There will be a SIR GOOSE KNIGHTED. Kennedy Centers Honors. OH yes.

Did anyone else catch the Top Gun vibe with the lighting design through the jam starting at 1:47:53 at the show? This video doesn't capture the spheres on the the sides of the stage going into the seats though. It was like looking at a fighter jet from the back and the band was lit like the thrusters. Rad!

Such fun shows! Left me wishing the mix was a little more balanced as bass was very low and Trevors crushing those bass lines! Peter’s pianos were on top of everything. Looking forward to seeing this band continue to grow!

New mesa
He appears to be using a new amp and cabinet. He had been using a Mesa Express combo for the longest time. He is now running a head and separate cabinet. I have not been able to identify the amp yet but it is not the head version of the Mesa Express because at one point there was shot from the back and relatively close and the amp doesn't look like a Mesa Express.
The new amp is a Mesa JP-2C (John Petrucci) head.
