Bought a pair of these a few days ago, went out on one ride, broke at the upper gear-joint. I never went down or hit anything, kneeled twice while off the bike, skuffed some bushes on a trail, didn't catch on anything. The pivot gear apparently broke and the upper unit came off on one side. This happened while riding on the road, it just felt wrong when I flexed my leg; I'm skinny and damaged goods, there's no excessive use! And, as stated, trail wise, 30 min on a single trail with no issues, just putting. Pricey for a single use item.
The overall increase in the protective impact absorbing foam, mostly. The hinge system is very similar and if you are looking for more protection there, jumping up to their knee braces would be the best bet.
It is comfortable for certain periods of time. It's a soft padding-like feeling. But if you are concerned about this, we'd recommend wearing tall or thigh high moto socks to protect against any issues.
Tried both of these (Regular vs Pro) on with Klim in the boot pants on. The Pro's definitely are slimmer through the knee cap and fit much better for me in my riding pants.

What makes these "safer" than the original Dual Axis?
