    Catherine, thank you very much for this cabbage roll recipe. My mom used to make them. We called them Golumpki, stuffed cabbage. My mom never wrote her recipes down so when she passed away a lot of the great dishes she made were never made again. I have tried store bought ones but they are gross and I never could find a recipe for them made the way my mom did with the tomato soup. Then I saw your recipe and was so excited. I made them Sunday night along with mashed potatoes and green beans. Omg, they tasted just like the ones my mom made. It brought back great memories for me. It was the first time I ever made them also. My husband never had them before and he loved them. My son cleaned his plate and I loved them. I'm definitely going to be making them again now that I have the recipe to make delicious ones. Thank you again. You really inspire me to cook.

    Recipes passed down thru the generations are the best! Tasty and easy, thanks. I made these when my children were very small, oldest loved it but younger ones thought the cabbage leaf looked weird and would not eat it. So, I chopped the cabbage like slaw and added it to the meat/rice mixture and baked it in a casserole. They loved it & laugh about it now as adults & love cabbage rolls, leaf and all-lol

    Looks Delicious 💯
    My grandmother made cabbage rolls.
    She also used the same mixture
    to stuff green peppers and
    poured a whole can of tomato juice
    in a large pot added water and
    steamed them on the stovetop.
    Many Thanks to
    Catherine's Plates Awesome Channel
    for bringing back fond memories.

    I make ours similarly, but always add a can of sauerkraut on top. Can’t beat the extra tangy flavor! I learned how to make them from my aunt and mom.

    I have a GREAT tip for you Catherine - instead of boiling your cabbage in water, I simply place mine on a paper plate and put it in the microwave on high, for about 20 minutes. It will be soft and easy to core. The leaves will be soft enough to peel off and stuff. So much less mess and effort! I tend to simmer mine on the stovetop on a bed of sauerkraut in a Dutch oven. 👍🙋‍♀️🥰

      A friend shared her cabbage rolls with me and she had sauerkraut under hers too. I remember a tomato product was in the kraut. I would love to know the quantity and what exactly is used. I've been thinking about these for twenty years lol.

    • @janetstraw191
      @janetstraw191 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Lonesomelane-58 I just use a can or package of sauerkraut - whatever I have on hand. The amount really doesn’t matter. I rinse mine first in a colander then put it in the bottom of the pot.🙋‍♀️🥰‼️

    • @janetstraw191
      @janetstraw191 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@suestephan3255 20 minutes, Sue. You will be amazed at how much easier it will be to cut up! But just keep an eye on it because if it’s a smaller head it might take 15 minutes or so.🙋‍♀️🥰

    My sister-in-law ALWAYS made these for our family get togethers!!! WE all loved them!!! Thankfully, she gave me the recipe before she passed away. Now it's up to me and my daughter to make them. My in-laws are Syrian. So she made them the way Syrians do. Thanks for making them!!!!

    I just spent hours wrapping 4 large cabbage heads for Christmas. I even use the smaller inner leaves so it was a lot. This is very similar to the recipe that I got from my mom. I put some of the sauce into the meat mixture.

    One of my favorites. I do not put chopped onions in mine and use raw rice. I use all the meat in the filling and none in sauce. I make them smaller but they grow as rice cooks and the filling is not loose. I bake them in a Dutch oven and it makes tons, at least 3 layers. Another version I make is Saramas which use salt pork to flavor sauce and sour heads. They are also layered with sauerkraut. An acquired taste, but far superior to plain ones. Plain ones are also super delicious. More often I make cabbage casserole with ground beef and bacon. Yummy. I make plain ones for a group or for children as not everyone likes sauerkraut. Thanks Catherine. I’ll have to make some, but I have a few other main dishes I need to make first. Happy New Year 🎆.

    Those look mighty fine. Love the idea of tomato soup instead of tomato sauce. The best I've had (to date) were at an excellent Lebanese steakhouse in Tulsa, Jamils. They'd bring out a platter of cabbage rolls, tabouli, bologna, Lebanese bread etc before you even ordered the main course. Delicious. I do believe they added a small amt of cinammon, mint and some lemon juice to theirs. I'm hungry.
