I am a German from Russia descendant and I love and make these, I boil my head of cabbage to remove leaves, After I roll them and place in my big turkey roaster, I put down 1/2 can of sauerkraut an then after filling the roaster I put the rest of the can of sauerkraut and over all I pour two quarts of home canned tomatoes and bake at 350 uncovered for 2-3 hours. Even better the second day.

Try freezing the cabbage overnight (the whole head of cabbage) and take it out in the morning. I love your filling, looks very flavorful! I'll be trying it soon, thank you.

Yes sister, you are closer to the regions for cabbage rolls: Poland, Russia, German, Middle Eastern, Near Eastern, I would say too the "stan" countries like Kazaktan, etc. These are the top ones and each region does it their own way but usually a meat and rice style. Great you were right about Poland. I have taught English to international students and love to cook internationally and do lots of google search.

So my friend from Poland makes these. She puts onion, garlic, salt, pepper, ground beef and an egg, mix it then add rice. Her cabbage rolls are in a marinara sauce that she adds cinnamon to. She cuts the core out of the cabbage and boils it for 10 min. Then the leaves fall off. She also uses about a tablespoon of meat for each cabbage roll, roll them and pile them up in a Dutch oven, covers with sauce and put the lid on, then bakes for 45 minutes. I love your meat recipe and thought you might like to try something different.

Cabbage 🥬 rolls are originally a Slavic (Eastern European recipe). Countries like Poland 🇵🇱, Ukraine 🇺🇦, Romania 🇷🇴, and Russia 🇷🇺 all have their own names for it. You guys definitely Jamaicanized it with the seasonings 🧂 which I love!!! Thanks for sharing! :-)

It is easier if you cut out core and put whole head of raw cabbage into a pot of boiling water for about 10 min. Each leaf will come off much easier.

Actually, u can skip boiling altogether by freezing the head of cabbage solid for a couple days, then defrosting. The cabbage will be soft and pliable as if it's been boiled, except doesn't rip as easily. U just cut out the thicker middle of each leaf b4 roll. The finished cabbage roll isn't as tender as when it's been boiled, but u save urself a lot of work & hassle, that's for sure!

That's how we do it. Keep the outter layers to lay down in the dish on top of sauce and place the rolls on top of them. We also cut the core out and put the whole head of cabbage in. Boil, let cool then wrap with them.

Cabbage rolls can be traced back to Jewish tradition 2000yrs or more. But many countries have done their cabbage rolls for centuries. Every country in Europa/Asia does their own style. Some like it Sweet n Sour, some like it Savory. German, Polish, Russian, English, Irish ect are what most folks know about. My Grandma would make it like Deddy but fry up some bacon and sprinkle it in the mixture before rolling it in the cabbage leaf. They are a great treat for any occasion.

Poland gave us cabbage rolls! My Mother made them rather frequently on our farm! She called them, “Piggies in a blanket” because she used ground pork or mixture of pork & beef in the rolled cabbage blanket! She cooked them on top of a wood stove in the early days with her homemade tomatoes! Delicious! I’m making them soon! Yummy!❤️🤗😋

It is Ukrainian/Polish, my grandmother used to make them use hamburger meat, onion, tomato sauce, bacon, salt, pepper, of course, cabbage tomato sauce in the pan after you make the rolled cabbage, and then you bake them in the oven you put a little tomato paste on the top The cabbage rolls before baking them, and you make the same ingredients for stuffed peppers! I mean you could make it however, you want to make it, but that’s split us Ukrainian Polish people make it. None of this turkey, carrots, and all that stuff in it. No, no no no no pierogies from Ukrainian.
