I was 12 when I saw Marilyn Horne and Joan Sutherland in Norma at the Met. Joan Sutherland's voice was huge. That's what I remember. We had standing room only and had to lean against a bar. It was not comfortable, but they were probably the only tickets available. I went with my father.
Are yes 3 of the greatest singers of all time. Pavarotti and Dame Joan are singing with the angels but the lovely Marilyn Horne still graces us with the her presence.
Dame Joan looks absolutely gorgeous in that beautiful, opulent green gown and on the very last night of being on an operatic stage, she sang so incredibly beautifully in duets with Marilyn Horne and Luciano Pavarotti plus her own indididual singing ending with a nost touching :Home, Sweet Home". Dame Joan absolutely wanted to retire after 40 years but with that voice she could have gone for a few years yet! R.I.P.+ Dear Joan. You will forever be loved and your name will live for all eternity.
This is INCREDIBLE. Making me cry! I miss Dame Joan and Luciano so much. Dame Joan is my all-time favorite, the voice of all time. Ms. Marilyn is still with us, but of course, no longer sings since she is 90, so I miss her, too. Her "Mon coeur" is unequaled. How I love this video! One dislike - Bonynge couldn't follow Marilyn to save his life.
She never lost her top register, which most sopranos don’t. So even though she got a bit wobbly as she got to this point, she still could sing that wonderful coloratura, albeit with a darker voice.
I get very emotional every time I watch this. I was in the audience the first time Sutherland and Horne sang duets - opening night of the 1963 Norma in Vancouver. I heard all three of them numerous other times but not together.
I was there, working in the foyer bookstall. It was tremendous and very moving. We all rushed around from our places in the foyer to her dressing room after this scene to get autographs from her and Pavarotti. They were SO sweet to us - and FUNNY!
Joan made her first stage appearance in 1951 in Sydney in Goossen's Judith, and by 1952 sang her first leading role as Amelia in Masked Ball at Covent Garden. The 1959 Garden Lucia made her a superstar and she sang her last full role in Les Huguentos in Sydney in 1990. This last appearance channelling our other great star Melba at the Garden as a guest performer ended a 40 year career, after ruling the world's stages for over 30 years. So missed.
Yes, I remember this night at Covent Garden, Dame Joan Sutherland's Covent Garden farewell. It was a wonderful night at the opera for all who were there and for those watching on television. And what a great trio of stars - the stupendous Dame Joan Sutherland, the matchless Luciano Pavrotti, and one of the greatest of Mezzo-sopranos, the marvellous Marilyn Horne. Trios don't come any better. 🥰❤❤❤
For those who may watch this and are opera novices, the conductor is Joan’s husband Richard Bonynge. He played a huge part in her career, developing and nurturing her voice for the 40 years she sang. Hard to believe she wanted to be a Wagnerian singer like her mother, and like her idol Kirstin Flagstaad! He found she had this whole upper voice and developed it. He used to have her stand away from the piano to practise and because she did not have perfect pitch (i.e. she did not know by ear which note she was singing) he would hide how high he was making her sing. She didn’t realise she had that coloratura soprano voice until he brought it out. Some people say sarcastically he rode on her coat tails, but he certainly did not. The world would not have had her if not for him.
Things like this are such a treat and celebration of the great institutions of operatic singing. I was think while watching, that we just don't have the careers where artists can come out and show their wares any longer.
Absolutely fantastic I have never seen this before Pavarotti was just fantastic I met him Number of times at San Francisco opera he was my idol back in the 70s and 80s actually a picture of the time of his death 7-Eleven and hardware fantastic also!!❤❤❤
la mejor cantante de todos los tiempos..............................una pasada....de grande que eres .......es..........y sera............................
"There's no place like home" was sung by the great Australian soprano Nellie Melba in her concerts. Before I knew this and what "home" referred to, I was somewhat put-off when Joan sang it, mistaking it for a signal that the show was over, now go home!
It is the tradition that during the New Year’s Eve performances of the Fledermaus you have surprise guests singing arias from other operas. Basically as entertainment during the ball that takes places in Orloff’s palace. Check out Natalie Dessay singing the Frühlingsstimmen waltz.
Sumptuous dress? She looks like she ran into a Christmas tree set on the way to the stage. But, that voice deserves the most respect from a queen such as yourself. I doubt you know anything about the voice and the olympic art of operatic singing.
Such an insult to one of the greatest voices in recorded operatic history. Sutherland here is 64 and still outsinging most voices ever recorded. She was a very tall woman [I met her and had tea in her dressing room with her after a Met performance] and often told interviewers that she enjoyed the "dressing up" for her concert performances.
Haters have to hate, I guess. None of these artists are in their prime, but all are SUPERB. My guess is that none of the detractors could produce anything close to this.

The date the opera world became a little darker and emptier.
Thank you, Madame, for everything....
Dame Joan, I loved you since my earliest childhood. I give you a deep bow in indescribable gratitude. Never forgotten

so beautiful watching Pavarotti with his eyes closed taking in the beauty of his colleagues paying tribute to Dame Joan.
Joan Sutherland changed my life.

She sang Home Sweet Home because her mother used to sing it to her. It was a tribute to her mother who started her on her wonderful musical journey.
I was there that night. It was magical

It is my impression that Dame Joan Sutherland could have kept singing until she turned 70.
She sings so amazingly in this clip.
She never lost her top register, which most sopranos don’t. So even though she got a bit wobbly as she got to this point, she still could sing that wonderful coloratura, albeit with a darker voice.

A great lady. Her memory lives on to this day. Especially for those who knew her personally....
OH how wonderful for you all. Incredibly special.
Really! Wow! When did it happen? Wow! I had the chance to ask autograph to Marilyn Horne in Mexico City more than twenty years ago.

And let's not forget Luciano's magnificent performance of "Federico's Lament"!
Perhaps in the next century.

lol
Voci indimenticabili! Grazie mille!
What an amazing beautiful set, this is why I love opera and I have heard the Samson and Delilah before but Marilyn Horne was transmutation
Que belleza escuchar estos tres grandes del canto lírico. Bravoooooo
The perfection, the Art of Belcanto.
Horne and Sutherland. Nuthin' like it.
I love her singing and I wish I had seen her live, She is without doubt a treasure of Our Country
Everybody’s palms must have hurt the next day. Of course, worth it!
Spectacular! Two thumbs up, a hundred times. Thank you so much for sharing with those of us who were not there.

they do...often...its just that pop and 15 mins of fame has taken more center stage that arts that takes decades to cultivate ceases to exist.
Fabulous! I'd never seen this before, thank you for posting it! ♥️♥️♥️
Momentos memoráveis de três gênios do canto lírico.
Que épica magnífica podermos conviver com estes seres humanos incomparáveis.
Dame Joan's Covent Garden Farewell Gala, New Years Eve, 1990.
what a joy...
What a thrill for their colleagues as well!
As their duet demonstrates, Dame Joan and Marilyn Horne were masters of bel canto.
As of this writing, Ms. Horne is still actively teaching the next generation of singers.
Que gran suerte haber conocido y haber vivido en el tiempo que vivió entre nosotros LA ESTUPENDA , la voz más hermosa de la lírica!!
I was there as well, just to the left of Jane Glover!
Absolutely fantastic I have never seen this before Pavarotti was just fantastic I met him Number of times at San Francisco opera he was my idol back in the 70s and 80s actually a picture of the time of his death 7-Eleven and hardware fantastic also!!❤❤❤
Never to be equaled. Never.
How could it be possible, today, to imagine such a invited cast for a Fledermaus ?
It was a other period...
Truly
I think in Vienna they perpetuate the tradition of guest artists, among the ones that are in town at that time.
Yes, this was from the period when great singing was really a thing.
Superb.
Ein sehr gutes video gut orchester chor solisten d

Does anyone know where I can buy a copy of this entire performance of Die Fledermaus?
Please... I have been trying to find a complete recording of this particular production for years. If you have it, please please do post!
Brad, do you also have footage of the final curtain calls and the presentation of the drum to Dame Joan? Would love to see that as well.
No, sorry
Wow so beautiful
I had the fortune to see her live (just once) in Newcastle Upon tyne. I had goosebumps. I could only imagine what she was like in her prime.
i attended that concert too, do you remember having to leave due to the bomb threat?
@@chrisfinlay3274 I didnt but now you remind me I do. Initially I thought something had happened to Joan and was relived it was only a bomb threat,
They had been doing this duet and these roles since the 1960’s!!!

WHO DRESSED HER for Fledermaus???
Oh I guess it was for the whole show.
Die Fledermaus? This is Donizetti!
Honey go home, be quiet, and do not ever presume to post such nonsense here again. Not a bar of Donizetti in this scene!
Just watch the Video from 0:17: "not a bar of Donizetti"? Well, it's just "La fille du régiment". As far as I know composed by Donizetti.

@@josephcollins6033 , Callas e Sutherland sono stati i due soprani piu' grandi del Novecento...e fino ad oggi del XXI secolo.
@@fabriziogarzi9892 Not Callas! She was hideous and did not know how to sing. Sutherland, YES!!!
Maravillosa!!!!!!
