An early example of beginning the story with the overture, now a plague in almost all opera productions. The music has absolutely nothing to do with the story, of course.

Where was this performance? Vocally absolutely thrilling and so exciting to listen too. To think Don Smith was here in Australia with his world class voice thrilling his audiences like at a Grand Final football match at the MCG Melbourne. I was fortunate to have heard him on the opera stage many times and I can certainly testify to the magnificence of his glorious voice. Bravo yet again Don👏👏👏

First opera I ever saw. A matinee later in the season with a slightly different cast - but the same two leads. Was it $5 for standing room? Whatever it was, I remember it was less than going to the movies . . . Thanks for posting. ❤

Don Smith with his unique golden voice was such a draw card for the public for they flocked to hear him sing and he never ceased to excite his audience 👏👏👏

The concert is pure delight! Elizabeth Soderstrom's rendition of Grieg's song, sung in her rich resilient voice, perfectly intoned, & so articulately projected, was beyond perfection, & moistened my eyes! At close to 77 years of age, so many sweet memories surfaced for an opera fan! Bjorling was a hot favourite, amongst the greatest voices in the history of opera! Thank you for the post! The glory days of Australian Opera, an almost completely repertory company, then the third busiest in the world with 15-17 operas a year and seasons in several cities. Now sadly impoverished and presenting mainly potboilers as young people just won't come and the tourist trade is not the type to go to the opera.

For those who may watch this and are opera novices, the conductor is Joan’s husband Richard Bonynge. He played a huge part in her career, developing and nurturing her voice for the 40 years she sang. Hard to believe she wanted to be a Wagnerian singer like her mother, and like her idol Kirstin Flagstaad! He found she had this whole upper voice and developed it. He used to have her stand away from the piano to practise and because she did not have perfect pitch (i.e. she did not know by ear which note she was singing) he would hide how high he was making her sing. She didn’t realise she had that coloratura soprano voice until he brought it out. Some people say sarcastically he rode on her coat tails, but he certainly did not. The world would not have had her if not for him.

This is INCREDIBLE. Making me cry! I miss Dame Joan and Luciano so much. Dame Joan is my all-time favorite, the voice of all time. Ms. Marilyn is still with us, but of course, no longer sings since she is 90, so I miss her, too. Her "Mon coeur" is unequaled. How I love this video! One dislike - Bonynge couldn't follow Marilyn to save his life.
