I think one big thing to consider is that the Shadowfell is gloomy, but not evil. It's like an Poe poem or a gothic novel. Hades is E V I L, worst of the worst. It is where Evil won and from where all Evil can be derived. Kinda like how beings like Nightwalkers from the Negative Energy Plane are different from Shadows and Wraiths. They're not Undead strictly speaking, they were never alive to begin with, and are embodiments of entropy. You can extend the same differentiation to Hades where the darkness and gloom is entirely fowl and devoid of gothic charm

I love whenever you guys cover outer planes! I can’t wait until you guys finish your way around the Great Wheel! I hope y’all eventually do a dedicated quasi and para elemental planes episode.
Also, any thoughts about flexing your creative muscles and fleshing out what the Shadowfell’s Underdark would look like?

“The Ring is the Greyest movie”…you mean the movie that was shot in its entirety with a green filter on the camera?
Bleak AF, no question, but give it another watch. That whole movie is green, my dude.
Nitpicks aside, fantastic episode!!! I LOVE that ya’ll are fleshing out more of the outer planes and giving them the love they so desperately need!! Well done, love you guys, and keep up the great work. The Bostonian in me can’t help but to bust balls lol.

I love lore on the outer planes, this is great! Personally I think that Hades is actually cool, it fits that it's a boring desolate Gray place. It's depressing and anxiety-inducing to think of being trapped there, which makes all the sense in the world. I know the initial response is to think it's boring to play in, but it makes sense as the most evil and despairing plane. They definitely could try to make a little bit more lore for it though.

The town sounds like Silent Hill.
Honestly the plane, seems like a great realm for Purgatory type places, as opposed to Hell or Abyss. I know Niflheim comes from norse mythology, its one of the realms connected by Yggdrassil.

I think a good philosophical difference between the Shadowfel and Hades is that in the Shadowfel represents depression (in a general sense) (inwards directed, kinda Poe-ish) while Hades represents malicious apathy (outwards directed, kinda like that one Nun’s description of hell as less fire and brimstone and more a state or being)

The Abyss gets more layers because every time an Abyssal incursion on a Material world reaches Stage 4 and it's complwtely consimed, it becomes a layer ofnthe Abyss. At least that's always been my understanding of it. So it could be reasonably assumed that the Abyss originated as a single layer, and it's been around so long that it's consumed and assimilated 600+ worlds.
The Abyss is alive and wants to spread. I don't think most other Outer Planes share that quality.

(For Resurrection, if you can only bring someone back it they are willing and ALLOWED. One of the deck of many things cards, calls this out specifically saying that you get killed and your soul wisked away to a realm and requires rescue or (Wish) to bring back.
Usually Wish is the only other way to free a soul thats captured in some way, so a DM could say the entire plane is a net that captures souls and they are required to be saved directly like a Silent Hill situation.

Hades doesn’t need three layers. Pluton is cool and the first two layers are empty enough that they could be consolidated IMO.

I had this idea for a Madara-esque villain who, instead of wanting to genjutsu reality, wants to undo reality so hard it never existed and never could start to exist in the future.
Id like him to be the BBEG of a lengthy level 1 to epic level adventure with some pretty heavy involvement from the gods, alignment, order and chaos.
Therizdun being a misconception only studied or written about by the mad, neither a god or a personality, but that which is left over from the overgod Ao separating himself from nothingness creating chaos, and with it the opportunity for reality, life, love, death, suffering...
Starting as a group of hirelings sent out by the BBEG to collect artifacts, do small quests for villages and cities to collect money and maintain his facade as a person of respute. Moving up to a planes hopping adventure where the party becomes legendary, eventually fighting said BBEG and disrupting the process (that they unknowingly helped procure artifacts for) that would siphon and concentrate the power of tharizdun into the bbeg's command.
Your videos, lore, and especially the atlas exterus episodes are really great inspiration, and I just found out about diggie's lore of the gods podcast through your b'haal episode.
I know neither of you have really done a lot of level 20 play. But do you have any recommendations for really high CR fights, resources or balancing tips? You've mentioned an older edition book once that detailed level 20-30 play once but I dont remember what it was called.
Love your guys' show. I've been watching for years now, recently binge watching through everything Ive seen and all the new stuff Ive missed in the last few months.

Actually Yugoloth are the only fiend type that doesn't use souls of mortals to make more of their own, they reproduce biologically, thats one of the reasons the Yugoloths consider themeselves the purest fiends.

58:15 I’d honestly love to see a giveaway of a rulebook for a different system. Cuz DnD is fine but I’ve had a lot more fun playing other systems like Call of Cthulhu and Mutants and Masterminds, but I know this is a DnD specific channel so not sure if other listeners would go for this

You can travel or be taken to said plane and not be dead, in hell they keep said people prisoner sometimes to try to corrupt them so when they do die their soul would be bound there. They don't want them to die before as their soul would travel to whatever alignment or god etc domain.

I think im going to create one additional realm deep, that sinks further into the pureness of apathy. That truly suffocates all motivation or want to do anything. And it will be modern earth. xD
All characters lose all magic and unique abilities and they just wake up as a Walmart employee.

So interestingly...Slough are different words with the same spelling....Slough, a body of slow moving water, as like in a swamp is pronounced: Sloo....Slough as in when skin sloughs off, is pronounced: sluff....Slough as when trudging through some dreary or arduous task, it's pronounced: Slog

The way it's described kinda reminds me of hueco Mundo in bleach, plus I like the infinite aspect of the abyss as a way to tell the players make your own layer and demons/demon lord kinda thing... wouldn't mind seeing what you guys would make

I’d say a good inspiration for hades would be hueco mundo from bleach. Grey skys, complex ecosystem, a forest underground, and a city the size of California with blue skys/ceilings, really tall towers and ruled by an overpowered, neutral evil sociopath plotting world domination. You know typical dnd stuff.

10:40 Instead of a Windex Bottle used to spray and keep these larva moist with the blood of good humanoids, or just humanoids in general
I am imagining a Yugoloth in a farmers outfit, overall's with a straw brim hat and a watering can/pale. Walking up and down spraying the larva, occasionally chasing off a Quazit or Imp with a hellish pitchfork. "Nah! Get outter 'er! Mah field!"

33:30 Thats a good point William
Demons heirarchy is one based on absolute power of strength, might makes right, you serve the strongest via fear and admiration.
Top dogs come to power through beating the hell outta others and clawing to the top. And then on this swaying column you have to play the game of balancing the power of your underlings holding up your column, squashing and resetting yourself.
Devils: They are probably too strict with their stiffled rules and legistlativure and beuracrats. Promotion takes time and lots of trials to ween out their "weak" via political macinations. To be clever and promote all manner of trickery.
Everyone know whats its like to work at an office. Those back pocketing snake co-workers who constantly report their fellow workers for any little infracture to make themselves look good. The ultimate brown nosers.
Their society is too strict. Rigid and probably stagnant, with lots of great potential being kept away.
Like in theory: A meritacratic society would promote the competent of say, someone who really understands logistics into a space to help funnel ways to get supplies and troops to a specific frontline, getting wounded out.
Or a competent general in charge of a force to use various artillery bombardments, etc.
But with devils.. Its politics and knowing, schemeing, plotting and ruining your rivals, with backdoor dealings.
Yugoloths seems to have a very potent mixture of the two systems, rules enough to keep the peace, enough chaos to promote ambition and drive to be the best. The best there ever was. (The ultimate evil Pokemon trainers. Sorry the theme song came to mind.)
And they have enough to worry about with the blood war right on their front yard, literally. And they probably have to sell out their services as a necessity to survive and thrive.
So I can totally see the General and King working like a two way governing system, where one works on keeping the civilian government in line. Payments for soldiers n their families, trade with other realms. Securing resources for the soldiers, and in turn soldiers do what they do best.
Its interesting to note: Both in fantasy and IRL. To be trained as a soldier has very little practical trade value in civilian life, whilst civilian life can be likewise very impractical and yet practical. Slight tangent aside, apologies.
