    In Macbeth, the Hags are called the Weird Sisters, hence the origin of Weird Magic. Also, the Horned King in the Black Cauldron is very much a Lich.

    Clarke's Inverse Law: Any sufficiently-examined magic is indistinguishable from science.
    I also like how Baba Yaga has two modes of wacky transport: her house on chicken legs, and her giant mortar and pestle set that she uses to fly through the air.

    Green Hag= wicked witch of the west
    Anis Hag= witch from Hansel and Gretel
    Bhear Hag = white witch from Chronicles of Narnia
    Sea Hag= Ursula
    Night Hag= Maleficent

    • @InquisitorThomas
      @InquisitorThomas 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Green Hag = Maybe, but I feel that the main inspiration is more from MacBeth, but overall I feel the Green Hag is the most Vanilla Hag.
      Annis Hag = I feel the primary inspiration for the Annis Hag is the Folklore figure called Black Annis who has the blueish skin and large claws of the Annis Hag.
      Bheur Hag = besides the relationship with snow I don't see much common ground with the White Witch, I think the closest thing to the Bheur Hag is a Windego since both creatures have a focus on trapping victims in massive snow storm and watching them devolve in a survival situation.
      Sea Hag: since Ursula is the only real Sea Hag I'm aware of I'd say the comparison is relatively good.
      Night Hag: I forget the exact name of the creature the Night Hag is based on, but I know in German Folklore it's thought that a creature would sit on a sleeping person's chest and cause them to have Nightmares which is the Night Hags main schemes.

  • @KS-PNW

    The 2E Van Richten's Guide to Hags had a "witch" class. Not sure if its been adapted for later editions but they were kind of cool. Basically sorcerer's with more spell slots but they had to have magical foci (wands, crystal balls etc) to cast spells. They could only have so many foci attuned at a time (increasing with level) forced you to pick and choose what kinds of spells you wanted to use.

    I’m a personal friend of sometimes allowing a wizard or some spell casters to create their own unique spells as in my thoughts they should be researching magic but to balance this I would have to approve the spell and it would cost more money to develop the spell then it would take them to just copy a spell into their book as they have to buy testing ingredients and practice then copy the final version into their books

  • @impartialthrone2097
    @impartialthrone2097 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    What I like about the D&D magic system is that, yes spellcasters know that components A B and C produce a certain magical outcome, but it doesn't seem like anyone knows *why*. Like, there's no logical reason why a ball of bat guano and sulfur plus some hand motions and certain mouth noises should produce a fireball effect, but it does. People know it does, but not why. Does that make sense? I feel like the mystery of magic is still somewhat maintained in that way, and Weird Magic just dials that up another level, because there's especially no reason for that to work lol.

    The worst thing for a hag would technically be if it were within distance of a town which has a beauty pageant, the worst possible outcome I can think of is that Hag, probably a Sea Hag whom hate beauty the most and are the most ugly of the bunch, got their webbed hands on a Formorian's Evil Eyeball and each year deform the pageant winner as her own little hobby and perhaps acquire some fishy minions to Plague any ship she feels like tormenting. Hags are the most versatile Villains for early level campaigns and that's the beauty of a Hag

    So, i've been reading Patrick Rothfuss' Kingkiller Chronicles and there is something very interesting in the way magic works. Most forms of magic have very strict rules in the book, except for 2 forms of magic, the innate magic of the Fey and Naming which are the ones that are capable of making the most powerful effects.

    Good examples of hags are the witches in the 1989 movie The Witches, Meg Mucklebones from the movie Legend, the witches in The Nightmare Before Christmas, and there are hags in the 1983 TV special Faeries, while very much geared towards children and if you can get through that, is a very good example of Faerie and it's denizens(and I believe it is based off the book Faeries by Brian Froud, who designed the creatures in The Dark Crystal and Labrinth, and Allen Lee, who designed Peter Jackson's Lord Of The Rings). In folklore, Jenny Greenteeth, Peg Powler, elder tree spirits, and of course, Baba Yaga.

    "Worst wallet" doesn't quite cover it. They make the bags from the skin of the victim 😱
    Also, I'm using a mega coven of hags in my game (3 covens joined under one called Nanna) as a helpful neutral NPC resource. Potentially, anyway. My party might simply attack something as creepy as a hag lol. The players are good with horror themes, but their characters have a pretty low threshold for creepiness. I'm building Nanna right now, and this was a very helpful video

    Hags would be great as just an on going thing through a charcter's or group's story. End up having to deal with one off the get go, or even as part of the origin story of a character. Never having them as the big bad, maybe even having be who the party keeps having to ask for help to defeat big bads. Then that is why things keep getting worse. Oh, you stopped the gnoll raids after the hag told you how to find where they were hiding. Too bad they were also raiding the the hobgoblin supply lines. Now they are good to go to invade. That is so great you defeated the hobgoblins after the hag helped enchant your weapons. You did such a magnificent job hunting them down that their head (I forget the name of hobgoblin magic guys) turned himself into a lich so he could get vengance on you.

    Since D&D fully researches into all mythos, when it comes to green faced hags, traditionally how would someone who's being stalked by a coven, either get them to back off, warding, banish or get rid of them? And what is a 9ft male version in a black robe? What is that considered to be?

    • @Licjr
      @Licjr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Inquisitor Thomas I'd say so. If they're part of a coven I'd probably go with legendary actions and resistance that's split among the members of the coven. Like, a coven that includes an auntie or granny has 3 legendary actions and 3/day legendary resistances, but any member of the coven can use them. Maybe bump their coven spellcasting up to include a 7th or 8th level slot

    Love the mechanics for the Wyrd magic of the Hags ; in my games i make it so the Arcane lore checks are super hard to make, and thus extra hard to counterspell, to express how strange their spellcasting is, like throwing pixie wings and pickled frog eyes in a cauldron to produce a stinking cloud and so on ^^
    So much space for homebrew stuff that i think Hags should never be some simple random-like encounters, and with wicked lairs, like having imps wielding wands of magic missiles, enchanted candles that slow the party as long as they burn for example. With older Hags having sorcerer or warlock lvls etc. And of course a load of magic items, but unusable for the party since they are « Hag Magic »

    In the Devils episode you spoke of Devils occasionally (very, very rarely) turning to good; does a similar thing ever occur amongst Hags?
    As far as "Weird Magic" goes, I honestly think anyone that delves deep enough into magic and spends enough time on it (possibly hundreds and thousands of years) should be able to create new spells. Even if magic is treated as science, new things are discovered all the time in science.

      Both 4e and 3.5 have an absurd amount of source books. here is a list of all 4e sourcebooks : forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Category:4th_edition_sourcebooks
      If you haven't played 4e before, I would recommend starting with the Monster Vault, Dungeon Master's Kit and the Heroes of a Fallen Land/Forgotten Kingdom books. These are from the D&D Essentials line. D&D Essentials was a series published towards the end of 4e's lifespan that really consolidated and streamlined the game. It made it easier for new people to learn and felt more cohesive. If you enjoy these books then the rest of 4e will be a blast to add on to your collection.
      Here is a complete list of 3.0/3.5 source books. All I can really say here is good luck! Iaam not too experienced with this edition, but this list is exhaustive. Outside of the core MM, DMG, and PHB I wouldn't even know where to begin.
