Log Cabin Quilt Block Strip-Pieced Tutorial

  • Hi there! In this video I show you how to strip-piece a log cabin quilt block using four fat quarters. This technique makes eight blocks at a time. It’s kind of a relaxing quilt project. I like to take my time, put on some music or a podcast and sew away!
    These blocks use 2 1/2 inch strips, so it’s also a great project for a jelly roll.
    This particular block “finishes” at 10 inches square. What I mean by that is when it’s sewn into a quilt, using a quarter-inch seam allowance, it measures 10 inches. The block as pieced is 10 and a half inches.
    Thank you for watching, and please like, share & subscribe! 🥰🌵

    I’ve been sewing for over 40 years, but have only been quilting for about a year and a half. This method looks so easy, I’m going to try a log cabin soon…other quilts to work on first!! Regarding the batik, I worked at a fabric shoppe that sold mostly batiks and I noticed that some, not all have a more vibrant side, so I use that as my right side, and some are identical so you could use either side. Thank you for your easy beginner friendly tutorial!!!

      @anndalynn Glad you like video! I love the idea of working in a fabric shop and will most likely do that when I have the time. Thanks for the info on batiks. I think viewers will find it helpful! Happy quilting 🧵

    There are so many different ways to make a log cabin. I have been trying to make up my mind for sure what pattern I am going to use on the quilt I am about to make. I am redoing the colors in my home after having primarily red with touches of blue for thr lad y 10 urars or so. NOW I am doing Turquoise💙, eggplant🍆/purple💜, and gray❔️. In the last year or two I have lost most of my mobility ♿️. So in addition. to changing the colors and layout in the rest of the house I have purchased a better sewing machine that I don't have to use a foot pedal with if it's too hard. I need a pretty relaxing space. I decided in the middle of the night last night when I couldn't sleep that instead of doing the jigsaw like pattern I was thinking of that I needed to simplify as much as possible. I like strip piecing when ever poccible. I watched a LOT of videos on different ways to do Jacob's ladder🪜, strip quilting with a tube⛓️, log cabins etc. I want my quilt to reflext me and not just be the right colors but a certain pattern becayse it was easier (required less thought and was fast). As I was eating my lunch just now I was watching somr non quilting TH-cam videos and this video came up in my feed. It caught my attention because of the colors and fabrics you chose... I often think that the demos are done with colors and fabrics chosen. so that it be easy to see on camera. But I love what you chose. The dark is very close to one of my fabrics. I have six that I bought for the quilt itself 2 turquoise batiks, a dark one and a light one, then I have a floral 💐that has both purple and turquoise flowers, then one with a white background and purple flowers and then a dark purple batik🌌. I have been thinking of what color to use to back it. the front will have so much going on I probably want to go with

    This is really different than what I’ve seen at first I thought I don’t know if I can do this lol but then as I’m watching it really makes perfect since ! How may I ask did you learn this tech*** please ? I love that it seems the seams would be the perfect size and no trimming down ! To me I think this would be easier than the reg way I’ve seen for a newer sewer as long as they are dead on the 1/4 inch ! Or would a scant be to small for these ? When do you use this seam allowance

    • @MadeBySueAZ
      @MadeBySueAZ  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Tonya…I found the technique in a quilting book. I’ll find the title and post it for u. I like to use a scant 1/4” seam when there’s many pieces to the block and have gotten in the habit of using it often and then trimming the block. Thanks for watching & commenting!

    I've made several log cabin quilts over the years and oh boy it took me forever because of the joining on and piecing and cutting the strips as you go..... but this method works wonderfullly, I'm going to try this with the FQ that I have got...!! So out of the 4 pieces of FQs you ended up with 8 blocks?

    • @MadeBySueAZ
      @MadeBySueAZ  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @countkostaki Well you need 4 fat quarters plus an extra strip for the center. Also remember that if u have only one fat quarter of each dark, then you have to use a strip of your first dark on your final round as well. It’s clear in the video I think 🤪. It gives a somewhat scrappy look. Happy quitting and thank you for watching! 🧵🧵
