Your tip about holding the top thread when you tart to prevent the rat's tail is a life saver! That annoys me soooo bad with my brother. I never could figure out how to make it stop! Thank you so much.
Did you know that a lincolin block with a black square in the middle was used in America at the time of slavery? a black square in the middle meant that a slave could go to the home with that quilt on the fence and get help food and shelter? So nice of you to show how to make that pattern. Thank you.
I'm year late, but I loved what you made. I made a log cabin lap quilt 9 years ago. And I'm picking it up again. I'm 71 years old and I'm doing this again. I'm a crocheter and having trouble with my hands so I'm sewing.
I’m almost 69 years old and I’ve been sewing since I was seven. But I’ve never made a quilt. So I’m making my very first one using this method and so far so good. It’s actually turning out really great in your method is fantastic.
I made four rows of four blocks. Thank you for the excellent instructions on the quilt as you go method. I started the easy assembling using the 2 inch strips with the 1/2 inch seams. So far it is working well. Thanks again.
I love this. I'm getting ready to start quilting for the first time ever and I'm watching all the videos I can to make it easy for myself from the get go. Thank you for showing your techniques.
I appreciate your teaching method, genetic personality and encouraging inspiration! I am quilting on a tiny island in The Bahamas(Spanish Wells) and don't have easy access to products. That is why when I found your tutorial I was so pleased! You showed me exactly WHAT supplies were beneficial, WHY I needed them and HOW to put them together....easily and may I say SMARTLY! I don't have the benefit to run back out to the store to grab more items. You listed it all for me!! I have shipped in all my items and ready to begin my "Quilt-as-you-go Log Cabin with Jelly Roll and EASY sashing"!!!
For multiple reasons I love your method. 1. I like folding it and cutting it. This saves all the precutting time. 2. I love that you attach as you go so I wouldn't have to worry about sewing the wrong piece on. 3. Love quilt as you go.
Hi Nancy, Wow, I am the Four Hundredth person who has watched this video ! I am going to use this method to sew a few quilts together. This will be my first time using this method. I usually quilt the whole quilt, but my shoulders bother me and I’m not getting any younger 🤣 so why not give this a try. Thank you for your videos and have a good weekend. 🥰 Chris -Raleigh NC
I am from Canada, I used to live in the attic for a few years when I was in my 20’s. The narwhal is real. I have seen the narwhal tusk up close. They are amazing. They’re Spyro just like a unicorn they used their tusk for hunting. I am enjoying your quilting shop kins. Just love it. You are doing a great job. Thanks so much.❤
HI From San Antonio, TX. I have had a renewed season of quilting since my children are now grown. (Made a few when I was younger, but paused due to busy family and moving around the world (military) and now I have had a resurgence- probably the only good thing to come out of Covid shut downs. I have made about 40 quilts in that time, but have never done a quilt as you go. I have researched, and then hesitate. BUT- you made it look so easy, and I am committing to try this out! Thank you for the very clear explanations! Wish me luck!
For icebreaker for staff's first day of school this year, they asked for us to say something new we had learned in Summer. I actually said that it took me all of my 58 years to find out that a Norwalk is an actual fish!!!! I loved hearing you ask about it. Nice to know I was not alone in this!!
I have been quilting now for over 40 years, wow, I'm old lol. Anyway, I have always, always loved doing Log Cabins, and wonky cabins but wow this is so much faster. I was watching it and then was wondering how you going to put that together and BAM your method is so fantastically thought out it was like my mind did a happy dance! I found your tutorial doing searches for quilt-as-you-go techniques and I'm so thrilled I found you. Amazing speech skills, you speak so clearly and explain everything so anyone could do this. Thank you so much! I see many, many more log cabins in my future, and again, thank you!
Holy moly that sewing machine is HUGE for a domestic, lol... glad I found this video. I am now working on a log cabin. Looks like this thing is gonna be big. Trying to think how to go about it to make my quilting easy
Hi, I am in Australia, I am 73 yrs ole & have been quilting since I was 23. I watched this video half a dozen times & then tried it. Sooo excited because when you edge stitch the strips it is perfectly positioned on the other side. Thankyou so much p, I have struggled with getting them to match for years.
Loved the video. and I love that you said "after church today". I too attend church, and Sunday afternoon is my FREE SEW TIME. Any thing that is laying on the table gets sewn into something. I think we're all looking for ways to "Quilt our own stuff". Way cheaper too.
I had a book with the quilt as you go method, I couldn't get. Sometimes I need to watch some one do a project a couple of times before I'm ready to cut up fabric. This tutorial was so well done I think I got it in one play. I still saved it, just in case. Thank you so very much.
Soooo happy to find you and see your sashing technique… I gather you are located in Michigan…my husband is from Detroit and his mom (95) lives in the Sterling Heights area as well as his sisters! I’m 80 and still trying to find easy ways in which to quilt as you go… I think I just got lucky 😊 I’m Sandi Polizzi and we live in Orange County California…thrilled I bumped into your TH-cam video…hope to see you again soon. Thank you❤
I do the "folding " for the cutting of strips. I figured I was making a huge mistake. I haven't seen how to block up on quilt as you go. Thank you. Yes, I am new from Va. Blessings, Eve
As a beginner meaning I've finished 1 quilt that looks like 13 yr old me did it this is more of my way of quilting and I'm adhd I could so do a full square and do something else then do another I'm too excited a must try with my new fabric yes THANK YOU YHWH always got my back I love it 🙏💜🙏
Hi from Leavenworth Kansas, lived in Georgia all my life until two years ago. I have not made a quilt yet. Have everything I need. You make it sound and look so easy.
Very clear instructions! Thank you! I'd also like to mention that Canada is , by landmass, the largest country in the world and believe me you will not see a narwal anywhere within a thousand miles of Toronto!.🙂 Meantime you have inspired me to get out one of my jellyroles from my hoard and actually make a few quilt blocks!
Just found your channel today. I've decided my first quilt will be a log cabin. I'm amazed you can sew, cut, iron and carry on two conversations at the same time. Whew ☺️
Just happened on this video (4 wks late) and your energy is so lovely. I really appreciate your well seasoned approach to resolving little potential problem areas before they happen. Thanks for all you do. Blessings
“Nice Job”. I thought it interesting to hear about your connection to Port Huron. I lived in Marie city on the St Clair River. Worked in Port Huron and then in Lapeer. I bought my first Bernina from a lady who had a quilting store in Lapeer. That was 30 years ago. Enjoyed visiting with you. Thanks
WOW! So happy I came across your wonderful video while watching others!! I actually cut out all of the pieces to make a log cabin quilt over 20 years ago, and then life and death and lots more life happened! As a newly retired teacher, I hope to locate my log cabin quilt pieces and finally make my first pieced quilt! Your video has motivated me to finish clearing out my parents’ home faster so I can move to mine and get started on that quilt! 🥰
Thank you for this video that was focused well and the sound was perfect. I've considered for years to do a log cabin and I like the way you constructed this one. Very clever way to attach the sashing! You are inspiring me to reconsider when I will retire. I thought Jan 2026 but now I'm thinking it should be sooner. Currently I'm 72, a widow, 3-10 hour days with great pay & benefits, lots of growing grandchildren I'm quite involved with, play billards-8,9 & 10 ball, but I sure do love my sewing. Now that I've set up a great spot and have been sewing more, I may have to reconsider that 30 year mark.
That was neat. I taught that same type technique at a senior center many years ago. Didn't think of glue nor was the iron on strip available to us. Really was fast and any 70 to 80 year old could make their own small throw. You did a good job making it clear. Mary in Virginia
I have just discovered your video and am so grateful as I struggle to machine quilt on my home machine. This will be so much easier and I am going to try it on my current quilting attempt. I'm in my 70's and only started quilting when I retired so hauling a full quilt aroung is a bit much these days. Great tutorial and thankyou from a snowy Welsh valley in the UK
first time watching you video learned a lot. I just started quilting a little over a year ago and am having so much fun. I think I am going to try the quilt as you go with the placemats I am making wish me luck
OH my gosh - how did I never think to use the pen to DRAW my square lines to keep mine from going kittywampus with every row. Glad I found you today! Can't wait to give this a try with my stash:)
I am a fairly new quilter and still learning proper techniques and this video is so very helpful for my new project. I am attempting to make a king size quilt and I want to quilt it to save some money by not having it professionally quilted. I am anxious about making a QAYG quilt but this video is giving me some confidence to try. I am using jelly rolls for the dark strips but I bought yardage and cut the 2.5" strips for the light strips. Thank you for explaining the process so clearly and wish me luck!
FYI: I'm an old quilter. The square in the middle always meant a fireplace and was always red. However, in a funeral or memorial quilt, the center was black or dark and indicated a loved one had died.
You have given me the incentive to finally make a quilt as you go! I have watched this process before, but this is straight forward approach--a jelly roll! It has been too complicated before. Thank you. I enjoy your tutorial and appreciate that it is a family enterprise. Blessings to you all.
hi from tonawanda new york (buffalo ny) you make it look easy but i still have a lot to learn __ love the quilt part i didnt know how to do it thankyou
I love the log cabin pattern and have made several quilts using this pattern. I absolutely love your video showing us how to do this pattern QAYG. I plan to make a log cabin quilt for our king-sized bed. Love your techniques!
I am originally from Pittsburgh and love the steelers, they one the first and usually first game won not a good sign, the following 2 we lost. So sad. I am not from Franklin Pa northwest Pa. Love this way to do these. Thank you
Love this method! Narwhals are real and are called the unicorns of the sea. I believe they are around Canada and Greenland. I didn’t know they existed until I saw the Disney movie ‘Island at the Top of the World’ when my kids were little.
My first time finding you, I don't quilt yet, but I want to. You make it look super easy. Thank you! I would take Athena to Niagara Falls, it's only 4 hours from the Detroit area and it is a beautiful place!
I just found you and I love on the tips and trips! I love your fun banter with the people who've joined in. Your voice is very soothing and encouraging. I'm from Alaska and love that fabric. Have been trying to find fabrics to make an I spy quilt for our new grand baby. This collection would be perfect! Yes Narwals are real, never seen one but they live in the cold waters around AK, Russia, and Canada. Thanks!
I’ve been imagining this should work out and be easy. It was today I was going to conduct my experiment. LOL I found your video and lo and behold you’ve done it! 😁. Kiss method of quilting!
WOW!! What a fantastic idea. I’m blown away. I have been staring at a bunch quilt as you go blocks and now I can finish my quilt. Thank you so very much
Just found your site. I've wanted to lean quilt as you go and you've explained everything so well that I'm going to have to give your style a try. Thank you for sharing. I'm from Florida.
Thank you, this has really been helpful. I just started quilting over the last 18 months during Covid. I have several quilt tops made, but I need to start quilting or having them quilted. This will help me a lot on what I can do.
What a happy discovery of your channel! I have made a table runner and an embroidered (programmed) log cabin single quilt with sashings strips and I stressed joining the blocks. I appreciate seeing the simplicity of using the batting joining tape (it appears to be sturdier than the steam-a-seam tape that I used) and I'll stitch from the back. I will also be marking my blocks after each round from now on! And I loved that your backing pieces were varied. Thank you, Nancy! So many new ideas in one video. I'm subscribing (and sharing) and looking forward to more great tips!
I’m new to your channel. Thank you for your Tutorial. I’ve never made a log cabin block let alone a QAYG block or quilt. I hope to try one after seeing how easy you made it in a reasonable time. 💖💖💖
Im new to sewing and you have given me the confidence to make something unique. Cant wait to go out and buy some pretty material and batting to make a quilt. ❤
I've never tried this method of QAYG but I really appreciate your teaching methods. And what a good way to square up the blocks. Thank you (and your camera person)for your time and efforts!
I am brand new to quilting and trying to absorb as much as I can before I start. This was such an enjoyable video and so easy to follow you. Tx you. Will watch for more.😊
Awesome video! I also am a Lions fan! Have been for decades, never been to Detroit but my grandfather on my mom’s side was born there! Must be in the genes lol!
Great instructional video. Thank you & your camera person…love your banter. I cut out my quilt today & am anxious in getting it started after work tomorrow. Not really wanting to go to work, maybe I will play hooky. 😊
Hi this is Carolyn from Mitchell Nebraska. I am enjoying your show I am almost 80 years old. And just began quilting last year!
Wonderful!

You are very welcome☺️
Hey this is Cookie and Kevin we are watching together. Bless his heart❤. This is first time I have seen this done. Looks very interesting.
Hope you enjoy

Time to start ☺️
Wow. Love how you can just pick out an jelly roll and start sewing on felt or anything without all that cutting pieces..wonderful work
Good morning from Saint Louis Missouri, my mother Angela was from Mount Clements Michigan. I am learning a lot about quilting as you go this morning.

Thanks for the video. Never quilted as I sewed but definitely now going to do some.
Teresa P from Texas has been binge watching your tutorials all day!
Thank you!!
Thanks
I'm going to try this. I have a lot of leftover batting. This will be a good way to use it.
WOW! So happy I came across your wonderful video while watching others!!
Thanks for watching and yea, it could be time to retire and really enjoy yourself, quilting :)
an excellent tutorial. Easy to watch learn. Clear voice too
Tips that have inspired me to finish several quilt I never finished thank you x
Glad it was helpful!
Ok. Thanks. Nancy. Now I’ve got 🎶 Barbara Manatee🎶 stuck in my head!🤣

First time here. I really want to make a log cabin quilt, You make it look so easy!!
You can do it!
first time watching you video learned a lot. I just started quilting a little over a year ago and am having so much fun. I think I am going to try the quilt as you go with the placemats I am making wish me luck
Good Luck - you can do it :)
OH my gosh - how did I never think to use the pen to DRAW my square lines to keep mine from going kittywampus with every row. Glad I found you today! Can't wait to give this a try with my stash:)
You can also cut the log fabric slightly wider than needed, as 1/4" and trim it to size. Obviously, with the traditional log cabin block
I am a fairly new quilter and still learning proper techniques and this video is so very helpful for my new project. I am attempting to make a king size quilt and I want to quilt it to save some money by not having it professionally quilted. I am anxious about making a QAYG quilt but this video is giving me some confidence to try. Hi, this was the first time watching you doing the log cabin. Very inspiring. Thank you Liz UK😀
FYI: I'm an old quilter. The square in the middle always meant a fireplace and was always red. However, in a funeral or memorial quilt, the center was black or dark and indicated a loved one had died.
Thank you for that additional bit of information! I often wondered why people put red squares in the middle!
@Kay Butler, you're welcome! The center square was the fireplace in the log cabin, and the hearth was the center of the home.
And yellow center represents the light coming thru the window!!
I would love to make a quilt like this with the sashing. May I ask, how many jelly rolls would I need to make a lap size quilt of 13” blocks?
Depends on the size of the jelly roll. I takes about 50 2.5" strips to make this large lap size@@bubblegirl6265
I love this video thank you for showing how to do this. My mom bought me a package of those pins and I love them
That is awesome!
As a seasoned quilter, there is always something new to learn. Great video. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
You have given me the incentive to finally make a quilt as you go! I have watched this process before, but this is straight forward approach--a jelly roll! It has been too complicated before. Thank you. I enjoy your tutorial and appreciate that it is a family enterprise. Blessings to you all.

Wonderful!
Jan 8th, 2022 I am seeing this for the first time. Love how clear your instructions are. I will be trying this one.
Hope you enjoy it!
I must try this soon….as soon as my fall yard cleanup is complete! Awesome instruction-thanks!
I’ve been imagining this should work out and be easy. It was today I was going to conduct my experiment. LOL I found your video and lo and behold you’ve done it! 😁. Kiss method of quilting!
Thanks for sharing your log cabin method and easy slashing! It is amazing!
WOW!! What a fantastic idea. I’m blown away. I have been staring at a bunch quilt as you go blocks and now I can finish my quilt. Thank you so very much
Wow! You really have this technique down to a gnat's eye. Thanks for your inspiration.

Thanks Nancy😀
Just found your site. I've wanted to lean quilt as you go and you've explained everything so well that I'm going to have to give your style a try. Thank you for sharing. I'm from Florida.
Have fun!
Thank you, this has really been helpful. I just started quilting over the last 18 months during Covid. I have several quilt tops made, but I need to start quilting or having them quilted. This will help me a lot on what I can do.
Great!
What a great instructional video. Thank you for taking the time to do your videos, they are so helpful. 👍🏻❤️
Glad it was helpful!
Your videos are always enjoyable and informative. With this technique, I can continue to do my own quilting. Thank you ❤
That’s the idea 😀
What a happy discovery of your channel! I have made a table runner and an embroidered (programmed) log cabin single quilt with sashings strips and I stressed joining the blocks. I appreciate seeing the simplicity of using the batting joining tape (it appears to be sturdier than the steam-a-seam tape that I used) and I'll stitch from the back. I will also be marking my blocks after each round from now on! And I loved that your backing pieces were varied. Thank you, Nancy! So many new ideas in one video. I'm subscribing (and sharing) and looking forward to more great tips!
Thanks for joining us Kathy 🤗
What a great technique! That was well worth the time. Thank you
Ohmygoodness I loved this this QAYG video so much. I’ve made several buy loved the use of the batting tape. The sound was perfecto!

Great instructional video. Thank you & your camera person…love your banter. I cut out my quilt today & am anxious in getting it started after work tomorrow. Not really wanting to go to work, maybe I will play hooky. 😊
